First LONG Train After Derailment, Plus My RANT On Using A Tragedy For Likes!

- It's been over a week since the Escanaba & Lake Superior Railroad passed by after a derailment stopped all rail traffic on this line to Channing, Michigan. ELS 501 and ELS 502 pushed a single gondola across the trouble area first, just in case it wasn't right that car would come off the rail rather than a locomotive.. Then they brought this extremely LONG freight train north consisting of mainly LP center-beam cars to be loaded with Smart Siding.
PLUS listen to me rant a little about all those videos about Hobo Shoestring and using his misfortune and death to their "advantage".. Ugh!
REST IN PEACE HOBO SHOESTRING..

Very well said, Jason! RIP Shoestring! Looking forward to you getting down again to connect with Jaw Touch!
Me too!
The guy who was organizing searches for Hobo is not bad. (Knew/worked with etc) -- All in all, a very sad situation.
Exactly right! I applaud that dude!
I agree with you about not using others content and monetizing it without permission. But RUclips doesn't put a lock content and I don't know the technical ins and outs, yes people can use other software to bypass, but it's too easy for simple video copying.
Shoestring was very public about his activities and his health. I'm not going to pschoanalyze him, it was his life. But, due to the information I saw on the Silver Alert and what I knew from his videos, I figured the outcome would not be good. But the theories (wild guesses) were just wild. I tried to work out various scenarios, but due to the evidence I just came back constantly to the same conclusion. The only thing that surprised me was the specific location due to the amount of houses around.
His popularity and public life got the nation stirred a little because of the mysterious disappearance without a trace. If he had not been found, he would have become an unsolved mystery and all those RUclips channels would a story and probably get the facts wrong.
In this Shoestring's (Mark Nichols) case, the simplest explanation was the correct one. The only technical question left, was it intentional or was he hallucinating and in a sleep-walking state? I have anecdotes from some military courses where sleep deprevation and exhaustion is the name of game. Guys in the woods at night talking to trees ordering from Burger King. The mind doesn't have to be on a substance, stress and lack of sleep can do it.
I pray for his soul, he knew not what he was doing. If anyone out there is in trouble and you get rejected, there's always someone else that will help. And we need to be there for people in trouble.
Now, my final prediction, because I've seen this before, the ghost hunters will show up trying to "contact" him. Be prepared to see that in the coming years.
I'd also watch out for people trying to snatch his belongings while his family prepares to move his stuff. If I could stand guard there for free I would. I'm too far away and got too much going on.
We could learn from this incident. I saw so many other missing person alerts because this and those cases may never get solved and are not receiving 1/10 the publicity.
Now about Hobo Shoestring, I'm just guessing that because I followed his channel, RUclips sent me a bunch of links to people I never heard of. So I figure RUclips made a bunch of money off these unfortunate events. Appreciate your honesty.
I agree with you about 'exploitation'. As you said, Jawtooth was the only guy I knew who co-shot with 'Shoestring". The rest of them are exploiting him.
Matt Mantell, gonagain, Billy from E Tenn Railway & Troy Miller have made as many videos and knew Shoestring as well or better than Jaw Tooth
Another great video. I might not always agree with you but this I can and do 100% agree with you. Him and jawtooth went to the hobo gathering in Iowa
Well said!
Jason I have to agree with you 💯 about the exploitation of the passing of Hobo Shoestring, I've seen a lot of so called tribute videos for him that have been using JT's videos and even Shoestrings videos..
Same.
Me too. There was one g that did like 4 live videos that was titled tribute videos, but helost me as a subscriber over it because it was basically clickbait. I just don't click them anymore
@@clarklindquist8137 Neither do I.
I agree with you Jason and thank you for not doing like others have done. rest in peace Hobo Shoestring. Such a shame. Nice video Jason, thanks for sharing.👍
Well it's nice to have the 503 back which gives you some cushion on the Motive Power side. Of course if the track can't take a train what's the point. Pushing out the solitary scrap gon the train will go north with 40 cars of which 31 are Center beams. I'm sure LP would love to see these at a much more regular basis. No doubt there will be a big group of loaded cars ready to come back plus a fair number of empty log flats. They really have to make a move to keep the customers satisfied and plain and simple it's consistently reliable service.
THAT - "consistently reliable service"..
The state of Michigan needs to give ELS a grant for track repairs and upgrades. The railroad does provide a public benefit by taking a lot of trucks off the road. Unfortunately the traffic the line generates alone believe isn't enough to fund upgrades or decent maintenance.
@@chrisduprey7283 it makes one wonder if the MIDOT even knows there is an upper peninsula. You probably are correct about the revenue on the line. When the paper mill at Ontonagon and the shipbuilding yard there we're in business it may have been enough to keep keep the cash flow going and there were also more log and wood chip facilities. With the switching services they perform in Menomonie Marinette that section probably still makes enough to cover the expenses. I followed some videos on Lake States and their track seems to improve bit by bit every year
@@paulbergen9114 I agree, the closure of Ontonagon really hurt them. Combine that with all the ore pits on the line (i.e. Republic) closing and it's not a recipe for success. They closed their mainline from Channing to Escanaba and put it out of service along with their line from Crivitz to Marinette.. They now detour all that traffic over the CN on a longer circuitous route which still must be cheaper than fixing their track. The last major track improvement project they had that I know of was about 12 years ago with a WISDOT grant from about Coleman, WI to the Michigan State Line. The railroad save a lot of wear & tear on the roads by reducing truckloads and the State of Michigan should take that into consideration when considering grants. The expanded LP Plant is a blessing to the area with so much else having left the state. I hope the best for them but with the state of our country's infrastructure getting worse every year it's hard to say.
Good to see ELS power back in action. I am watching Shoestring's videos. He was a unique guy. RIP Shoestring.
Too bad they wouldn’t put their own Scheme on those Locomotives! Thanks For sharing!!!
You bet
Thank you for your videos. So sorry for the loss of Hobo Shoestring.
I never thought about it but for a shortline RR a derailment could be a disaster. Not enough lines to route around a damaged section trapping units on each side.
I agree with you on all the folks using Shoestring's death to monetize their channel. His death points up the fact that life is short and uncertain. If you are thinking of doing something, the time is now. Don't put it off until someday because you may never get the chance.
It really took them quite a while to repair 503. She is one of my favorites. Love the orange.
Wonder if 503 were out of service for its 92-day inspection.
@erie910 It was OOS for bad wheel set following a derailment in Green Bay
Great video, i appreciate younot exploiting shoestring. I know you was friends with him.
Jawtooth did a great tribute to him. Just before shoestring was found
Thanks Jason for sharing your thoughts on Hobo Shoestring. Really going to miss his videos. I feel for his family and friends. While I was in Fostoria for the eclipse, I wore my Shoestring shirt and did a "hobo shadow" picture to pay homage to him. I think Mark would have loved to had seen the eclipse. Keep posting your great videos from up north! Be well...
I hope so too
I totally agree about Shoestring, I saw several that I had never heard of before, using Shoestring.
I agree with you about the Shoestring videos.
Jason, It wasn't a rant it was an honest, and in my opinion correct , take on what SOME You Tubers have done. Take care. Like the video by the way.
One would hope that the cost accountant for the E&LS has presented to the ownership a "Total Applied Cost" of doing derailment repair v doing an upgrade to the trackage near you and elsewhere. Asi es la vida!
I doubt they can afford any track upgrades without a government grant. When track on the Marinette to Crivitz line started to get this bad, they chose to take the whole line out of service instead of repair or maintenance of the line.
That's a shame. But, IF the bean counters submitted that Total Applied Cost eval to the Feds or the state, it might grease the skids a bit.@@chrisduprey7283
Hi Jason You and Jaw Tooth are two of the best railroad videos because you stick to the content. Keep up the good work, Larry
Thank you very much!
Some people have very little class when dealing with non-ordinary events.
Getting the word out is great.
Asking for likes, subs, and using footage from others is just poor taste.
Thank YOU for the video this morning!
You are so welcome!
I agree with you . Thought that when the videos started coming out . They are fishing for likes and subscribers . Good video ! Longest train I've seen.
I follow a lot of train channels including Virtual RR but I have gotten suggestions from channels I’m not subscribed to and never heard of before and now news and even Shoestrings channel come up as well now and Stobe videos. It’s for subs , views and clout, clicks and 💯 *%* exploitation!!
Thanks 👍
Jason, great stuff as always.
Although I didn't watch but a few of the Shoestring tributes, I don't have a problem with the other RUclipsrs paying respects in their ways whether they knew him or not. I've never met "Shoestring" (or yourself for that matter), but like you, he had a very wonderful way about him that made me feel like I've known him "well" from his earliest vids I've been watching for years now. I was deeply saddened with his passing... And as a relative "nobody" on RUclips, I can only imagine how those closer to the RR community felt, while believing they should all be free to express in whatever ways they see fit. Just my opinion....
People clicked on those videos bc they promised “new information” and it was always a disappointment
Your back it's been awhile since we had a train 503
is back hopefully we see ol Conrail blue 402 back. So yeah man good too address that before people say your only talking about the hobo shoestring tragedy for clicks and views and likes and clout not even the point just about every rail fanner on this platform has brought awareness as well so yea Jason keep these trains going for Mark.
40 cars today.
I concur.
I do agree. Seems like a lot of people trying to cash in on Shoestrings name in the moment. Really should be left up to those he knew and people he filmed with before. SO many videos with his name in the title this week from people with no real relation.
Thank you Jason.
I agree with you 100 % and it’s pathetic that they do it all for new subscribers, clicks views and exploiting poor Shoe string. All people who never gave him a second thought before he went missing. RIP
I think all rail fans that knew hobo shoestring or saw his videos will miss him now he is watching trains in heaven rest in peace hobo shoestring
Sorry to hear about Hobo shoestring, I used to watch his videos. I heard thru the grapevine that EL&S is getting a grant from the government to repair their tracks, have you heard anything of that nature
And I respected the fact that you and Jawtooth never jumped on the bandwagon, although I did see a good bit of piracy on Jawtooth's content.
You should have jawtooth come to upper michigan sometime
I’d love to see a joint video with Jawtooth in the UP!
I am glad someone finally said it. The same thing happened with Riley Strain and it was hard to watch. Proud to say I hit do not recommend videos on every single one of them.
Hey, Jason. I don’t know a lot about Hobo Shoestring. I watched a few of his videos and
he seemed like a nice guy. As a
former railroader, I didn’t really
want to condone someone
trespassing like he did and violating safety and all that.
Not to rain on your parade. That
being said, I was saddened at
the report of him missing and then to hear of his death. I
wouldn’t have wished that on
anyone! Evidently, there some
crews that put their job on the line and, having pity on him,
gave him a warm, clean and
safer ride. Kudos to them!
I still feel sadness when I hear
his name! Anyway, there were
40 cars; 31 of them were center
beams. I can’t think of a reason
why CN would want the ELS.
It would take a fortune to bring
the track up to 50 MPH. The
customer base is marginal at
best. I don’t know about the
north end, what it’s like, there.
From your videos, there only
seems to be four consistent
shippers and their income from
storage cars. Thanks for your
videos. I enjoy them!
Great video J.Sorry about your friend. 😢 Greg.
Thank you
RIP Hobbo Shoesting such a sad ending to a Great Rail youtuber, he will be missed.
You're not wrong, those who attempt to profit off someone's loss need to at least have their monetization pulled for a month, especially if they're using footage from other channels
I agree with you Jason
there are those who make claims but never met him Hobo Shoestring using his name to make money and orange freddy on the back thanks Jason !
I was expecting to see loaded pulp cars going north, just empties. No green Freddy. 😢 Thanks for sharing. 👍
Next time!
Another good video, thank you
thanks Jason
I agree that many RUclipsrs are using Mark’s death to get views. Like you, I know that some were genuine friends and were trying to help but I stopped looking at any videos with his name in the title once he was found. I don’t even want to see any “tribute” videos. Take care Jason.
40 cars this time! We never once mentioned Hobo Shoestring Mark on our channel StormySky Rail Productions. It is not our place!
With all those center beams LP must have their own switcher
Looking on Google Earth, I haven’t seen one, maybe a trackmobile.
Great video thanks Jason I
Glad you enjoyed it
G'Day, Long Time no see.
Excellent Video.
Looks as though it was Dam Cold Bro.
Drive Carefully and Stay Happy.
Regards.
Thanks, you too!
You did it right Jason. Kudos!
Great video and agree. You tube needs to do like facebook and police and have a jail for violators on exploitation on others content that you honest video makers work hard to make your living at . Kind of like copy rights !!
Copyrighting gives you legal protection, otherwise it is available to use by anyone in the public domain.
I wouldn’t go that far; just de-monetize the videos.
When the train comes back south, "loaded", wonder where its gonna derail next🤔😱❓
Yeah that too.. SHHHH....
@@jasonasselin as for the late Hobo Shoestring.......100 years ago, when "riding the rails" was a way of life, my gramma on my moms side would feed them if they came asking for food, same with my late wifes gramma, and its very disrespectful for others to post videos made by JT, and others, etc, as a tribute to a kind-hearted man as H-S was.
The easy answer: Look for muddy spots. The weight will push the rails down, and the weakest point will break.
It's interesting that a small 16-mile non-interchanged railway in eastern PA. hauling coal almost twice daily has far better track maintenance than the ELS. Dave at ccrx 6700 That's Railroadin! has a small fleet of rail maintenance vehicles and shows all of the work he does. Other than a few derailments on the E&LS, what real track work have we seen? Does the E&LS even have a working ballast regulator? Of all the videos Jason has created, I've never remembered non-emergency track work being done. The E&LS is a large enough railroad that it should have 3-4 flats to carry the rail maintenance equipment and to move it system-wide. But I've never seen any MOW cars owned by the E&LE. I've seen 'model railroad layouts' have an array of rail maintenance equipment that would more that cover the needs of the E&LS.
@@thomasboese3793 yes, ive subscribed to ccrx6700, and he has seen videos of ELS's deplorable trackage, and its a wonder theyre still in business.........wonder where they spend the revenue they get from LP, its certainly not on the track! And i am also surprised that the FRA hasnt shut ELS down, or at least give them warnings to upgrade their trackage.
@@jasonasselin i am surprised that ELS has not set up a "Go Fund Me" for track upgrades, with the amount of railfans that follow their fortunes and misfortunes.............
Brian Pasco ( sp? ) if you watch this channel, I would love to see your ELS Railroad. Thanks Jason!
Sad to hear of shoestring, seemed to be one of good guys. great video. how many cars can LP handle, the local Wall board plant can handle up to 7 with 7 plus ready to load. did you like the Spring snow.
It makes me sick people use someone's passing for likes.. it's one thing to show your respect for them, it's another to drag it out of clout.
Another great video. Well said sir. Thank you. Now Mark can join Stobe, Stu the Jew, and Woastanovkize. RIP.
Ya I've watched shoe string for a few years and I was definitely taken back by all the "look at me " videos !!!! Not cool at all 😢
Exactly!!
I enjoyed that video👍👍
I'm glad
It's ok nice train.
Thanks for watching
Hi Jason, first of all a great video ive missed these trains! Regarding the late great Shoestring i was a huge fan always will be ive seen some of so called tribute videos & been apalled that some have used part of Jaw Tooths video's footage of him & Shoestring together in their video's! & yes with adverts making money out of it its so wrong. Surely you need permission to use other peoples footage in your video? Im sick of it now. You need to applauded Jason along with Jaw Tooth you have something called integrity. End of my rant. ❤😢 RIP Mark aka Shoestring. 🙏
Jason, Where are you located on the ELS line?
good train video
Thank you very much!
I must have missed something, when was this latest derailment?
Around Easter
I only looked at a couple of RUclipsrs and that was it
Nice!
Thanks!
@@jasonasselin Yw!
Have you seen els 600 lately?
Did not count cars. Too busy listin' to your comments about Shoestring...
I have forgotten, what was wrong with 503?
Nothing anymore.
Wonder how long it takes CN to make a run at buying the E&LS
Dont know if theyre buying ELS, but my son in law who works for CN, says that the takeover of Iowa Northern will happen as early as this coming August, and CN is also looking to takeover Iowa Interstate as well.
@@paulsmith5398 I had heard the IAIS rumor as well, only thing that would sink that is that CN has a parallel route, we'll see.
@@richardhunn4298 might see my son in law at the end of April, my grandsons will be participating in the Boy Scouts Lincoln Pilgrimage, will ask him if he knows anything about an ELS takeover by CN.............
I don't see any financial incentive for CN to buy ELS. The physical plant is tired and traffic is marginal.
@@richardhunn4298 the reason CN would want IAIS, is their swing bridge at Dubuque Iowa is getting outdated and will need to be replaced in just a couple years. Also, theres a tight clearance curved tunnel immediately after the bridge on the Illinois side that wont allow autoracks or doublestacks, and there are houses above that tunnel. And whats interesting, is many years ago, when U.P. had the EMD DD35 cab & cabless diesels, some idiot from either EMD or U.P., forgot about that curved tight clearance tunnel, and one of those DD units was run through it for delivery, and surprisingly made it through without a scratch!
Suddenly everyone knows Shoestring and its a load of garbage using his death for views. But in all honesty I am just as guilty in a way for viewing a few.
Enough with drama
I never heard of the shoestring guy. I've never been into hobos and bums.
As I understand, Hobo Shoestring had a house, but just loved a hobo’s life - and he took us along by way of his videos.
In any case, he wasn’t in any “bum” category.
I hope Jaw Tooth edits all his encounters with Shoestring and produces a memorial tribute!
@streetrodder- and yet you felt compelled to post this. Why?
