  • In this video I discuss if longer games are automatically better than short ones. What makes a game good or bad. Does adding more content to a game make it a better experience, or does it actually take away from the game? I compare the things that make both shadow of the colossus and assassins creed origins good experience, and point out why one trumps the other.

I'm old school. I gravitate to linear single player games. It allows me to experience great game and a well placed tailor made story within a reasonable amount of time so by the time is done, I'm already craving my next adventure. I recently bested Sekiro in 15 hours and had a great time. It did not overstay its welcome now I'm moving on to FFVIII for who knows how many times. Gaming to me is a hobby, not a part time job. 'Forever' games expect an unreasonable level of commitment and time investment and that investment will be null when the developer decides to turn the game off. That is a waste of time.

well said brother. talking about some of the stuff you said in my next video. the forever games are fun if you have the time. but those shorter single player stories will always be superior to me

*Achievement hunting is really what keeps me playing most games beyond 10 hours these days. I'm convinced achievements were created to hide the fact that developers have no idea how to properly master Replay Value.*

I also have job social life hobbies (also Gaming is a hobbi) and still have time to play... For exemple there is the Witcher 3. I have 900 hours in it of course dosnt playing it constantly but I can make Time for it... If you dont Gaming is not for you

Also if I have to pay for a game than az least give me content... The New COD is way too expensive for what? 3 hours of story and a ok multiplayer? Thanks no. And also the side stuff is always optional you dont have to do it

Shadow of the collossus is probably the most unique experience in gaming.
I wouldnt call it perfect or not even near perfect BUT it does not have to be.
I suggest to every one that calls themselves a gamer to not miss out on this game

That's why I think Super Mario Wonder did so well. There was no bloated content putting it at only ~10 hours of gameplay. With that being said, I think that the appeal of having 80+ hour games went away when games became more easily accessible. When I was a kid, 80+ hours of content sounded great because I could only get like 1 game a year. But nowadays, that just sounds like a terrible time sink. It also feels like some games have long repetitive gameplay and monotonous grinding just for the sake of it like AC Valhalla. However, games that do have 80+ hours of content aren't always bad like BOTW or Red Dead Redemption 2 where I feel like the side content really make the game better.

    • @dqRoman
      @dqRoman  Месяц назад +1

I have met a lot of people in the zelda community for example where this has been the case. I grew up on old zelda. I like the linear story that makes you walk through all parts of the game. Side content is still there too. But a lot of newer players prefer botw and totk. This is understandable since those games are really well made. I love those games too but I feel like its missing some of the elements of the older games which made me feel like I was playing a zelda game instead of another assassins creed clone. And I think part of that is because of the non-linear gameplay. Some of the younger people Ive met (and im not that old, in my 20s) wont touch an old zelda game, even as someone who loves the switch ones, because they wont play the linear game. For some reason it seems like linear = bad, on top of short = bad to a lot of the next gen of gamers. Could be just the people Ive met too. But still. Also refusing to give older games a try because of graphics. I have a friend who played elden ring as his first souls game. He wanted to play ds3 after at my place before he bought it for himself and just kept going on about how awful the graphics are, and how could anyone ever play it....... and I dont think they look bad by todays standard at all still so IDK what hes on about lmao
I have a question for anyone who reads this. The people who wouldnt play the non switch zelda games and the souls games all call themselves zelda players and souls players, with the zelda players only having played the switch ones, and the souls player only playing er. Whats your opinion on someone saying they are a "game title here" player when they only play one game in a franchise, but refuse to play any others? IDK I dont want to seem gatekeepy but it seems weird to me for example someone calling themself a souls player, and referring to the entire genre instead of the one specific game they played, when they have no intention to play any other games in the franchise or genre. Like when I hear someone say "im a souls player", I want to talk about their experiences in the franchise, and I like getting new people into it too, which is why I was excited for my friend to try ds3 with me so he could get it after liking ER. But if I hear someone say "im a souls player" but then say they have no intention of playing ds1,2,3,bb,sekiro, or a soulslike because they dont look as nice as the newest one (in this case elden ring) im kinda just like...... huh. Not just for souls but its just the example im going with

I have not met those types of people personally but have seen exactly what you're talking about. It doesn't make me mad necessarily when people like one and then call themselves blank player but hate on the older ones for whatever reason but sad because they can not truly understand the masterpieces that are these games. It puts me off they can say they are a fan of the series, then hate on it. Instead of looking at them differently, not every game is your perfect imagination. (ingoring the graphics part of this cuz that's just dumb to dislike a game completely for personally)

This is an interesting discussion and one very relevant to today's game space.
But I think a quality game will get multiple hours no matter the cost. A good gameplay loops more integral than vast amounts of content.
Don't get me wrong I enjoy the big AAA open worlds but they do often tend to be lacking in gameplay.
My favourite game with the most time invested is monster hunter world, I've put around 1700 hours into that game across two platforms because I like the mechanics, I like the grind, and I like the variety.

@@scottjones2885 well said 🫡🫡 I don't think all great games call for a lot of time. You're gonna have ones that you think are phenomenal that you only playthrough once or twice. But generally speaking, if the game is that great to you, you're gonna want to play it repeatedly regardless of how long it is

(Genuine comment) the reason I love terraria isn't the thousands of hours I have sunk into it, but that when I spend hours upon hours playing it, I accomplished something. Maybe I learnt a new method or slayed a boss on the first try, no hours on the game feel empty. In a 2d plane with tens of thousands items it does get boring but I will come back 2 months later and play the best game ever. (Play terraria)

If i have to pay than give me reason. Like RDR2 its at least 60 hour to complete the story or more and you have another 300 hour content and its good... Also doing the side stuff is up to me i dont have to do it
