Please don’t stop making Star Talk. I have really bad insomnia becuase of my anxiety. Listening to your podcast while I fall asleep let’s my mind focus on something instead of running wild keeping me up by overthinking and what not
I love when he says something smart and I'm like "huh?" and it leads me to pause the video and read a study/essay on the topic, which then leads me to look up several definitions of physics words which eventually leads to me taking an incredibly long time to finish these videos but definitely expands my horizons
sure, they glide sideways.. which equals to death anyway. if you're talking about autorotation and the freewheeling clutch, in theory the pilot can save the helicopter upon engine failure and they are trained to do this, but that said almost no pilot has actually attempted to do this maneuver in a real life or death scenario, and of those who managed to respond quickly enough to start the maneuver before the helicopter spins out of control, only some of them survive the near suicidal maneuver. often times a pilot that has never experienced such a scenario outside of training will panic and completely forget their training, which is why most helicopter crashes happen. compare that to plane crashes, which by default have the ability to glide, reassess their situation, contact the Air Traffic Control for guidance and direction, find suitable soft/splash landing sites, dump excess fuel, carefully adjust heading and angle of descent, brace the passengers, etc. there are significantly better chances of survival in a plane, just because the pilots have the chance to think things through instead of panic and forget their training. granted a very experienced and seasoned veteran pilot can land a failing helicopter without a second thought, but there are very very few of these pilots compared to pilots who have never had to do such a suicidal maneuver in real life. disclaimer: autorotation only works for a few seconds once the freewheeling clutch disengages, if the pilot doesn't start the nosedive maneuver to increase kinetic energy in the rotor blades, the helicopter will start to spin out of control due to newtons 3rd law of motion: friction. which is why its absolutely crucial that the pilot start the maneuver immediately.
On 2/23/2018 - Iliza graced my ship - USS HORNET (CVS-12) for two comedy specials (2 shows/1 days). I was the ship's IT Manager at the time and can tell you that Iliza and her crew were nothing but class and wonderful guests. I loved her comedy before the show, but after meeting her and working with her crew for the shows, I realized just how wonderful she was. Thank you Ms. Shlesinger, we loved having you aboard. Hopefully when the ship an open again, you can join the HORNET again for a COVID-19 relief show?????
When he said "looking for life" I IMMEDIATELY thought of "looking for life in all the wrong places," and then Iliza said it, too!!! So many times he says a phrase that clicks with a song in my mental roller-dex and sometimes Chuck will say it, too.
Iliza was awesome and funny as always! I've followed her stand up off and on and she just gets better and better! You definitely have to have her on again Neil! Funny Episode! BTW! It's awesome you enjoy comedians and I can't wait to watch more while I work!
In the event of an engine failure, a helicopter pilot can use autorotation: Using forward and downward momentum to generate an upward flow of air through the rotor blades to rotate them, and in doing so generate lift and slow descent to a safe speed, like the 'helicopter seed' pods of Maple trees.
The weird thing is, Neil has said that before and a pilot corrected him in a SmarterEveryDay video and even Neil appeared in that video conceding he was wrong about it when he tweeted that a plane can glide to landing, and a helicopter wouldn't, yet its still gliding on wings either way of a fixed wing or rotating blades.
i believe this is true but how relevant is this in practice really? Im guessing helicopters would still drop straight down 90% of the time even if all pilots have knowledge of this. Otherwise there would be way fewer lethal crashes.
I have watched it, and I am about to watch it again with my significant other. What I did not notice earlier was how long it is. IMHO you can go easily for 2h and I will be feeling it wasn't long enough.
Hey Neil. Huge fan here! I'm a former helicopter co-pilot for the Norwegian Departement of health and first responder for 3 years. When the wings of a heli stops, you can glide to safety, given the right circumstances you can even slow to a gentle halt before touching down. I've only ever been in one heli while the engine went out once. But the adrenaline and attention to detail in the moment of emergency gave us the kind of slowmo feeling and we made a somewhat soft landing, without incidents. From about 800m above ground. All pilots here in Norway are given a safety course with handling of a dormant heli as a must-pass for getting your pilots licence. Just a little realitycheck from a long time Norwegian fan.
I just found this channel and it’s nice to be able to watch Neil talk about the universe and answer and explain things that make you understand the universe better

Helicopters can glide too if their engine's die, search it up its an actual thing
They dont just fall out of the sky
And sometimes even if the rotors are turning they can drop hundreds of feet when they hit a pocket of less dense air.
Autorotation!
sure, they glide sideways.. which equals to death anyway.
if you're talking about autorotation and the freewheeling clutch, in theory the pilot can save the helicopter upon engine failure and they are trained to do this, but that said almost no pilot has actually attempted to do this maneuver in a real life or death scenario, and of those who managed to respond quickly enough to start the maneuver before the helicopter spins out of control, only some of them survive the near suicidal maneuver. often times a pilot that has never experienced such a scenario outside of training will panic and completely forget their training, which is why most helicopter crashes happen.

@@onepathofreason1 is that what happened to kobe bryant? i never actually read the story about it
Autototation needs height to spin the blades fast enough to produce lift. If its a low flying heli it has no chance to autorotate.
