My one question is how plausible is Final Fantasy 10 Blitzball? I know it supposedly played within a sphere of water and technically is affected by gravity, but almost everything about the sports practically screams _Made for low G/ No G_
Hey Neil - still living in denial of the UFO evidence being released from the US Navy and the Pentagon. True science is exploring All the evidence no matter what the result may show - Correct ?
When Neil was asking “Why dampen the fingers/hands for grip on a baseball?” I was like, “ The same reason you lick your finger before you turn the page of a book, low-grade adhesion.” I guess it just hadn’t occurred to him. But isn’t that what science is about? It’s turning our attentions in different directions for discovery. You are awesome Love your channel
Back in 1970s our Janus Company Radio Theatre (weekly live on KPFK LA for 14 years} decided we wanted to create a live broadcast of our version of baseball on a dome on the moon, complete with play by play, 2012 (!) ads and crowd sound effects. We called it Space Ball. (This was before the movie of that name.) It was great fun. We even managed a follow-up with a game rained out in the dome. Unfortunately the air-checks were lost, but the memories were better science than in reality. Those were great times!
I legitimately couldn't fathom what else it COULD be if not a physics breakdown of Spaceballs for, honestly, like 20 seconds. That's how much I wanted it - I could imagine nought else.
Sorry latecomer. But I haven't seen this episode and when Dr. Tyson was like, "our geek in chief" I was like omg I hope it's Charles!!! Yay!!! So glad I'm right! Love the show. Thanks!
5:41 Orbi-Tennis on the Moon, hit the ball as hard as you can so it goes orbital, the other player has to hit it in the same direction so it will pick up more speed (so, not a back and forth), hit it 5 times before the player that didn't serve has to stop it and either get a point, or the other player gets a point.
Great group, especially Charles Liu - would love to see him more. PS Chuck Nice you’re awesome and don’t underrate or devalue yourself - you’re obviously very intelligent and the perfect bridge of connectivity between a broad audience and a group of scientists.
I have heard about human flight on Titan and my understanding is that you would need a wingsuit but you could fly essentially forever on the planet in a wing suit. Lol the Icarus joke was hilarious by the way
15:15 someone jumps from one wall, does some flips, gymnastics, tricks, etc. reaching a top speed, BUT Winslow enough to land the other side. So tricks, plus speed would calculate a potential score in that sport.
Space ballet and gymnastics would be interesting to see. Magnetic tracks that people can travel, could be as much fun as a roller coaster or just a site seeing stroll.
As far as the US mens soccer program, I think one of the biggest issues is that in the US we have "other options" In many of the other countries who are dominant in the sport of Soccer, it is *the* primary sport. Far and away. In the US, many of our best natural athletes end up choosing to play Baseball, Basketball, Football and Hockey before they choose Soccer.
Sir, I am huge fan and following your thoughts since when I started learning science in a different way. You are my inspiration. And I have a doubt which I would like you explaining about this, whether Human activity(climate change) is literally moving earth's tilt? - thank you
I’m a guitarist which definitely involves both fast and slow twitch.. Muscle memory is definitely a part! You can train any muscle to have memory just takes at least 1,000 times!! Anyone can develop more fast twitch muscle! By using all explosive movements!! Like sprinters jumping over a bench side to side!! Jump rope is really good!! One of the best exercises! Then squats !! Squats actually work your entire body and provides the most hormone production..
I saw an Italian pro at practice in Richmond VA, (VCU Cary St Gym) he could kick a ball into the goal by kicking it at nearly 40 degree offset of the goal! (That means, he could kick it in a orientation not facing the goal, and it curved towards the goal!) This is also known a a "banana kick" because the ball boomer-rangs to its intended target. The force and power of his kick put spin and english on the ball such that the air interacting on the ball did the work to guide it onto the goal.
50:40 This is something Charles will have to read more into because he's not fully informed on that particular topic. Nate the Lawyer has videos about it.
This is my favourite startalk line up👏 one suggestion if I may, Chuck should just read the names of the people asking questions and Garry should read the actual questions😉
I'm not sure I understand Neil saying that the Coriolis effect deflects the ball to the right whether you're kicking northwards or southwards @37:20 . From a kicker's point of view, wouldn't the ball deflect to opposite goal posts whether he's facing North or South ? Might just need a refresher course on how Coriolis works 😂
I'm of the personal opinion, that even the best and smartest people need somebody to humble themselves every so often, if not then they will stop trying to improve and become stagnant.
I know Neil is an Isaac Asimov fan, so he probably remembers a game described in _The Gods Themselves_ that may have been the inspiration for Quidditch.
I have a small issue. It was stated several times in this conversation that an object moving in zero-G, once pushed from a wall or surface would continue in the same direction until opposed or influenced by another object or surface. Neil has asked several times about the change of direction once in motion. I have spent more than a decade in martial arts and half that time teaching it. While this may not be a "sport", it does add to our understanding of the human potential in physical activity. In my practice, we teach a technique of aerial kick that starts with a vertical leap followed by the torquing of the body produced from the independent motion or the leg to create momentum for a spin before landing the kick. Could our independent appendages (up to a quarter of our mass) be used to alter our direction once in motion? If so, then gymnastics would certainly have its place in zero-G sports, since their focus is primarily altering and manipulating the torque and momentum of the body. After all, we are more than just a ball floating to the next surface. To put it more simply, as a boxer doesn't just punch with their arm but the whole body, so do we kick with our whole body. If I was to explosively kick with a snaping force in a given direction, would I be carried in that direction in zero-G?
I'm no physicist, but I'll go out on a limb here (pun intended) and say you'd just start spinning uncontrollably. Since your kick isn't pushing you off of anything, the force you're pushing outward with your foot will cancel out with the force of your muscles and ligaments holding your joints onto your body. Since no net force is produced linearly, you will not change direction. It's also got something to do with the conservation of angular momentum (which I do not fully understand). This video shows an astronaut doing it in 0 G m.ruclips.net/video/2Oc-Ucx_4Ug/видео.html . He just spins faster but his direction doesn't actually change. Just as in martial arts, your kick gets you to spin but doesn't change your direction overall direction. You won't move diagonally or laterally through the air if your initial push is straight up... I may be wrong about this though, your question just really got me thinking!
Are there any Startalk meeting groups yet? It seems to be very difficult to find people who are even moderately scientifically literate to chat with. Anyone in the south Florida (USA) area wanna get a club going?!
bruh giant plexiglass sphere, dope maybe semi complex court on inside, one side has blue targets, other red targets, teams of hit other teams target while flying around
Neil, if we start measuring racing events down to the .0001 of a second, then wont other factors start to effect the competitors? Like the Coriolis effect depending on which lane they are in, which way the wind is blowing across the track, are you wearing gloves when touching the sensor to stop the clock, and or the starting pistol, the starting sound had to travel further for one competitor then another, is the starting line absolutely equal for each lane.
#StarTalk #NeildeGrasseTyson May I ask a video description about that, what we are know about our Planet's energy balance? I mean total energy income, energy outcome that Erath can lose/radiate out and how much heat that humankind generate and how affect to this balance. In detail I am curious about that mostly we produce electricity by gas turbines, so that heat energy waste and steam/water vapor how much affect to our climate change and energy balance. We talk about CO2 many times, but we also know vapor has green house affect as well and gas turbines has only around 35-48% efficiency and do not forget about efficiency of electricity grid and electiric work efficiency at endpoint usage like industry and all household were we use all electricity that produced. (So maybe important to know that how much of energy can Earth lose/radiate out.) How far can we go if we do not turn our electricity production to much more efficient and also generate much less vapor/CO2, etc...? Greetings from Central-EU.

Thank you to the patreons and startalk I love being apart of this community!

As soon as Neil said "geek in chief" I said "YEAAAH!" Love when Charles Liu is on the show!
I love that that is his actual title on Star Talk! XD I like it when he is on too!
@Charles Liu: You should have heard me cheer when I saw that you were on this podcast. LOVE everything you bring to the conversation.
Right on!
This Charles guy is awesome I would have probably learned something in school if he was my teacher
I would like to have Charles as my science teacher, Neil as my physics/math teacher, Gary as gym teaches and Chuck as the janitor! Lol.

YESSSS so happy to see Mr geek in chief back. What a show 😊😂
It's always been a dream of mine to just sit down and chat with Neil Tyson about space stuff. How lucky.

I think if a race is that close, maybe they should do a quick completion to declare the winner, such as arm-wrestling or Rock, Paper, Scissors.
This is way racing events stop at 0.001. They could go further, but choose not to.
