I completely agree with you about Juicedlink. I own one and the audio from it is great... and quiet but complicated. Once set though it's great. I wish Juicedlink would update the controls. Great video!
I've spoken with Robert from Juicedlink a number of times about this. He feels that the biggest concern in design is size and audio quality, not easy of use. While both of those are good things, easy of use would really bring Juicedlink devices forward in the market.
The JuicedLink sounded the best, and as far as all the settings... I don't change my settings during a shoot... so thats not a problem for me. Juiced-link WINS!
Deejay - Thanks for this review! "The JuicedLink Riggy is the most complicated simple device..." Ha! Great description. I recognize their products have good specs, but the difficult ergonomics can complicate use in the field which may impede production. Combined with the lack of headphone monitoring, download manual and higher price, it makes the Tascam DR60 a more appealing option. I would normally prefer better audio quality, but the DR60 audio appears to be fairly good, is the most convenient to use, cost the least, and it records. The DR60 is bulky, but I would likely mount the unit someplace other than under my camera.
Completely agree. Off topic I heard back from Musthd, that is in fact a composite only BNC output on the back of the monitor. They have plans of adding SDI to future models but it's cost prohibitive.
Do you have a basic audio setup vid? I need some help understanding why some setups give better audio levels than others and why some things don't work as I would think.
Hi there, I am looking for a new solution for concert recording. It looks like the Tascam DR60 / 60mkII has a terrible bug... gain-control on the tascam is 3db-steps and creats a peaky noise most time...
Do u know of any audio adapter for my iPad Pro 9.7 to get audio out of a console (form were the band get the audio out to the audience) on a live concert when a shot Facebook live videos?
Are there any XLR adapters like those on the market that are powered by something other than batteries? Perhaps are there any that come with an AC or USB power source adapter?
LOVE this video, thanks!!! Now how about Tascam DR-60D versus other lower end Tascams, versus H4N for general use (and maybe as pre-amp for your camera? I don't know if any of them can do that...)
Hey there. Could any one help me out. I'm using the rode video mic pro with a zoom H1 and i wanna be able to get a lower noise floor so i can do more with it in post (EQ) ect ect. Would getting a H4N or Tascam 60D help with that? OR am i just limited with the mic it's self. Cheers.
The Juicedlink uses standard signal flow techniques just like audio mix engineers that run large consoles. A clean signal is always preferred over anything else especially when you get back to the edit room. Running the Juicedlink is not as hard as indicated in this video. Usually you set the signal flow with the switches and you are good to go for the day.
The beachtek does seem to roll off the high just a touch and you are right the Juicedlink does have the best audio quality out of the bunch, though its price and usability are the biggest drawbacks.
The beachtek has that "talking into a tin can" sound. The juicedlink well, I guess you get what you pay for. I think I'm going to get the juicedlink and run it into my h4n and see what I'll get.
For me, of the units selected, the TASCAM is the clear winner. First, it offers usable metering. None of the other units do. A colored LED for each channel is a ludicrous way to make sure you're not risking clipping. And if you're using the camera for primary audio recording, you're walking a tightrope without a net if you're trying to capture audio sequences with much in the way of dynamic range. Secondly, the TASCAM has a really decent four channel recorder - none of the other units has any recording capabilities. Personally, I'm of the opinion that the wisest money spent is on an excellent preamp - I don't think any of the units here is nearly to the level of the Sound Devices MixPre-D, especially considering the MixPre-D has an outstanding A/D converter built right in and I can feed that directly into the digital-in of my Tascam DR-680 multichannel recorder for essentially pristine recordings. Yes, the MixPre-D is more expensive than any of the units here - but it's also significantly better and more versatile than any of them.
onelonedork I couldn't agree more - and it's a cheap, cheap, cheap way to get into multi-channel audio recording.with reasonable sound quality and good (at least in my opinion) convenience. You can stack devices on top of it, which is impossible for the hand-held recorders unless you are good at rigging/welding up custom mounting devices.
with juicedlink your voice sounds deeper. with other competitors your voice sounds a little bit nasal. nothing to compare! Juicedlink is another level. much much better sound. I think its not more complicated than a sound devices
I just can't believe cameras like my t5i don't have a headphone jack. it's almost mandatory ye get a unit like this to monitor audio otherwise it's a 99% gamble if a mic plugged directly into the camera is working or not, with no way to tell until ye put it in the NLE & find silence(it's happened a few times to me haha) So, even tho being able to cut back on a crew member & do the video & audio myself would be nice, I think, for now, i'll stick to having a separate zoom audio recorder & boom mic & sync em all together. Too bad a company doesn't make a product with all these features in one box, then again i guess they couldn't release a NEW product every few years or differentiate between consumer-prosumer-pro. Just my personal observations. Very well done, comprehensive review though.
The tascam is great on 96khz, i am truly happy with it every time i work with it. I use a 12v motor cycle battery 24Ah, with a regulator to 5v, and my camera hangs on that to. I can work a week intensive with 1 battery. For my LED video 3 point lightning i have made 1 x 50W head light, 1 x 100W fill light and one 200W key light, and those run on 2 x 12V 24Ah batteries. It burns around 1 hour on one charge. So that way i have all portable and can do lighting in any way i like. The fun part is that i can recharge the batteries while driving, i made 3 connectors in the back of the car so that they can charge....i am pretty proud on it :-D
@@onelonedork Were they? I thought he went bankrupt when developing his new small distributed recording device, I do not remember the name. I still use my RM222 amplifier, the audio is fantastic.

is there any version of this thing that exists where you can plug it into wall for the phantom power instead of changing batteries
Nicely done. I liked the JL the best but they were all closer in quality then I would have guessed.

From a practical perspective this is never a real issue
I've seen the Tascam DR-60D used on a pro shoot/interview over a week long period; worked well...Yes, they do eat batteries.
Thanks man! Loving the quick tip vids too!
do you edit the sounds ?? or its the original sound from the devices ??

Does the tascam automatically sync audio with your DSLR camera?
Awesome video. Super informative and helpful. I have tons of respect for your knowledge. Thank you!
DO Tascam DR-60d RECORDING INTO THE CAMERA
AGC off - so I guess I dont get the beach tec right?
Another excellent review. Thanks!
Great reviews! Thanks
Great review! The beachtek had the worst audio IMO. The juicedlink has the best sound, I think the complication is well worth the trouble.

At the current price of $199 with a free copy of pluraleyes, I'd say the Tascam dr-60d offers up the best overall value.

Check out my i-rig hack video for single input.
I'll take the beachtek thanks :)
Beachtek PRO or Cine? What is difference?
Is it just me or did the juicedlink sound a bit more muffled?
Maybe, I thought the Beachtek sounded a little muffled.
