Can I just say that it’s so refreshing how honest you are. If you cry like 3 times a week because of school, then you show us. Not hide it. i wish to carry this on, on my channel. I am a med student in first year and in quarantine. This quarantine has taught me so much about myself needing structure and my medical school has literally left us to our own devices ugh

HEY HEY! For anyone scrolling through the comments, please acknowledge this comment :)
I promise don't cry a lot! I think a lot of people forget that these videos show ~10 minutes of my life; however, my life runs 24hrs a day! On average, I cry once a month. But if I upload videos 4x per month (every Friday), it may seem as if I cry a lot more than I actually do.
    Nonetheless...
I'm reading all of the comments and getting the sweetest DMs from you guys. I love you all so much. Thank you for being so supportive

Look at it as an advantage rather than a disadvantage. Use this time to learn how to educate yourself without relying on your professors. Professors are good for supplementation, but you shouldn't have to rely on them to learn. The more you develop the skill of learning on your own, the better off you'll be when you start studying for the MCAT and when you're in med school. Good luck!

I’m not a Med student but in the accounting profession. Self-learning will become your greatest asset when going into the workforce as you’ll only have yourself to rely on to provide the right answers to your patients (for me clients on their business). You’ll get this!

It is frustrating to not do better when you study 24/7! I had an exam the other day and got a really nice score but I could not accept it whatsoever because of how much work I put into it. As a 2 year med. student I 100% feel like this especially when it's the end of the week or post exams. You feel like you can breathe for like a minute and then you have to go back and study again. But you know we can do it! It's going to stick and it gets frustrating, but we can do it! Also I love all of your muted rant parts because sometimes you just need to rant even though no one is around LOL

There's always ifs and buts and all these things that go racing through your head, but I'm here just to remind you that you made it through and you did that. What doesn't kill you only makes you smarter, and you're working towards being something really great (even though you're already really great). Thank you for always being so raw and genuine in these videos. It always means so much because I can relate so much lol. You do you, boo ❤️

Very interesting to see how different medical school is in the USA compared to Denmark. In Denmark, healthcare and education is free, and we even get payed a monthly salary while studying. During the coronavirus outbreak, I have been working at an isolation ward at the hospital. Recently just got infected myself, and I have been recovering for a couple of weeks. Hopefully I will be able to return to work soon (hopefully immunized as well, hehe). Been watching a lot of your videos during this time. They are very inspiring, and even though medical school is different in Denmark, I can definitely relate to the occational mental meltdowns ;-). Stay safe!

I just finished med school. I understand you 10000 %. When you enter med school, you're used to always get the "best scores" of your class and suddently you find yourself in a class where everybody is really good and are all overachiever. It's normal to feel that way. Don't beat yourself up and don't compare yourself to the rest of your class. You desierve your spot dont ever forget that and believeee me it's not that score that is going to make you an amazing doctor. The hospital life is REAl life and this is what's important. You can do it ! Time will fly by. Don't doubt yourself.

DS Hello, I go to De La Salle Medical and Health Sciences Institute in the Philippines. As of now, we are waiting for government announcement if we will continue final exams in person this coming June. If the government doesn’t extend quarantine, we will be taking our finals in person. If the quarantine will be extended, they will cancel the final exams and base our grades on our current class standing + outputs and quizzes taken during the online classes. Right now, we are still waiting for the final plans of our school. It all really depends on what the government will announce in the next few days.

it is so refreshing to see someone that is continuing to pursue their dreams and showing the difficult as well as the good times through it. I am working on my BA (I'm 27 going to be 28 this month - this comes from a whole separate stress) and I get it - you thought you did well and even if you passed with a good grade, you have set an expectation. Upon setting that expectation comes with disappointment. You are brilliant but just don't be so hard on yourself. I stopped (well, kind of) putting expectations on myself and see what my end goal is and keep that motivation. Keep it up!

So true, we had some super heavy semesters in medical school because our course was being reformed, we essentially sat all 4th and 5th year courses in the span of a year and a half- so 6 months less time than usual. A LOT of people suffered. Point is, it's ok to struggle, all you can do is your best, then whatever happens, happens!

Gosh I'm just going to school to be a PTA, but when I tell doctors and therapists about the amount of work I'm given to study and learn, they always say it sounds just as hard as med school or a law school.
My midterms sucked too. I straight up sobbed to my husband right before my last midterm telling him there was no way I was going to remember every detail about the 12+ chapter I had to cover. Like, I cried as if someone in my family had died cried.
I went to take this online test, and the teacher was proctoring so she could see my face. I tried so hard not to tear up during the test so I wouldn't look unprofessional but they came anyways when I struggled to remember things.
I've worked in really tough positions in my life and I've experienced some pretty intense things in my life, but the way school stresses me out is on a whole other level. It's nice to know that I'm not alone in that overwhelming feeling.
Thanks for being so candid about your process. It makes me feel less bad about mine :)

"It's fine. It's fine" Literally me when my friends and family ask me hows studying going. I list the things I'm doing or have done then realize that I still have more to do and improve on and then my tone starts changing as the list goes on and finally I say, "Yeah its fine though."

Right now, there are people all over the world who are just like you. They're either lonely, they're missing somebody, they're depressed, they're hurt, they're scarred from the past, they're having personal issues no one knows about, they have secrets you wouldn't believe. They wish, they dream and they hope. And right now, they are sitting here reading these words, and I'm writing this for you so you dont feel alone anymore. Always remember, don't be depressed about the past, don't worry about the future, and just focus on today. If today's not so great don't worry! Tomorrow's a new chance. If you are reading this, be sure to share this around to make others feel better. Have a nice day. :)

Thank you for normalizing the stress of medical school. I'm a 1st year too. I get it. It's a rollercoaster and I fluctuate between happy and sad...anxious and at peace, etc. It is never ending and unfortunately social media glorifies the process. I have a completely different gratitude for people who wear a white coat. The sleepless nights, missed family events, failures, self doubt...it's an ultimate sacrifice. Press forward. We are almost done and fortunately what's IN US is greater than what lie ahead of us. Cheers to being 1/4 a doc!

    Hi Rachel,
I know exactly how it feels to be overwhelmed. I mean, it feels like drowning in a ocean of work. I know it’s hard to convince yourself to start working, because you know that once you’ve started you can’t stop until it’s finished. I support you and I know that you can do it. I don’t know how it feels being in a med student, because I am just a 9th grade student, but I know you can survive this and be proud of you after all, ‘cause you’re really strong. You inspire me a lot, because I do want to become a doctor later and now I realise that I have to work as hard as you do. Your videos help me a lot. I love you so much! I wish I could give you a big hug right now. Be strong, be confident, ‘cause you now you’re important and loved.

Hey Rachel!! Thanks so much for another very real video. I'm also a first year med student doing my best through the quarantine. I used to complain about having to go to lectures, small groups, labs etc. but now I realize how much I needed that structure throughout my day! Studying on your own sucks! Also I am currently studying neuro and it is SO HARD. Thanks for letting me know I'm not alone! One thing I have been doing that works well is I having an accountability partner. We text each other our goals for the day every morning and then check in at night to see how each of us did. It really helps with motivation :-)

It has been hard switching to online but I can't blame it all on that. I know one A- or B+ will not ruin my chances of med school because it doesn't work like that but it is so disappointing knowing your own capabilities and the amount of work you put in. It’s always good to just vent it all! get it all out.
What I do is organise first:
    1. Prioritise what is due first
    2. break up the things that you need to study in very small blocks each day to build up a bit every day
Apparently it’s very advantageous to study for 20min, exercise without thinking for 10min, repeat… ? but I think you’re doing as best you can. Keep up the momentum and drive!

  • @dttiimd
    @dttiimd 4 года назад

I came across your video accidentally while studying for my
board recertification. I must have typed
“study” in the search box and you came up.
I graduated from medical school 22 years ago. WOW! It seems like yesterday. I remember vividly the all-nighters, falling
asleep in libraries, test anxiety (with nausea), and the loneliness. It is really cool to see you guys expressing
yourselves in such a real way not only to help others but I think to deal with
your own feelings, both euphoric and dissapointments and those feeling in
between. 22 years ago the internet was
just starting out and there was no youtube!
Even though things were a little different I think the experience of an
old guy like me can help. Here goes…
#1. It is impossible to learn everything! Work hard and be
ok with your best. Contrary to what
professors and counselors tell you, grades and test scores DO NOT correspond to
how good a doctor you will be. My last
year in residency we matched an Ivy League medical student to come in as an
intern and he struggled. He was totally
book smart but did not present patients well and establishing rapport with his patients
was difficult. Feel sorry for the
brainiacs in your class. They will end
    up teaching.
    #2. Believe that the
creator of the universe has adorned you with the gifts of knowledge, strength
(internal and external) and the peace to enter the fire without fear. I found a church down the street from my
apartment and would attend the early service on Sundays (7:30) and that would
make me get up early and study the rest of the day. I never started a Monday without reviewing the
    week prior.
#3. Exercise and eat as healthy as possible. Carbs increase serotonin and they are cheap,
so you feel good on both fronts. But the
healthier you eat the better your brain functions.
    #4. Listen to
music. Lots of it. Music that makes you feel upbeat, or relaxed,
or even music that will help you cry if you need to. Musical tones can even change
your brain waves to help you study and retain more material. I used the deep learning tones from Dr. Kelly
    Howel’s website www.brainsync.com.
Finally, a few med school professors (not all of them) like
to test students on what they DO NOT know not on what they need to know. They hold grudges being that they probably
wanted to be doctors but either could not get into medical school or could not
handle the workload. I heard you say, “it
never ends.” Your right, it doesn’t. But every day you’re in med school is one
less day you will be in med school! My classmates and I decided early on to
change the mantra from “it never ends” to “Bring it on!”. Hope this helps just one of your
followers. You guys don’t need luck. To believe is to be strong! God speed, and many long careers to all of
    you.

@@RachelSouthard You're very welcome. Don't forget to laugh a little every day. Choose faith over fear. Do you know what fear stands for? False Emotions Appearing Real! Remember this is a journey, not a destination. Yes, graduation will feel AWESOME but learning is forever, so enjoy the ride but don't let it change who you are, because it will eat you alive and spit you out if you let it. Professors can be evil, so show them who's boss! And most importantly, if I can do it YOU can do it! Have a great weekend practicing the mantra...:)

You know... Medicine will never be easy. You'll definitely be able to develop a routine and get better at coping and studying and all that jazz, but fundamentally, the Doctor life will always be challenging. So it's important to be able to identify and release those emotions when you can. It's so good that you're able to acknowledge that and keep going anyway. It's been awhile since I graduated and while it's gotten "familiar" , there are still really bad mental health days. But that's okay. The most important thing is to move forward. Proud of you!
