As someone who has been lucky enough to see this band, they play these songs live and sound exactly like on the record. Maybe even better. A very powerful band to see live.
The thing about Ghost is that it's actually ABBA-esque pop disguised as heavy metal. And I mean it 100% in a good way. That's why it appeals to a very large audience. Their production is so clever-well-built harmonies, instrumental and vocal breaks, embellishments here and there (e.g. the piano in the second verse of Square Hammer). Probably the real secret to their success is that they're Swedish...
One of the jokes for years has been calling them "Scooby-Doo Metal." It's accurate, not wrong, and not a complaint. Plus the concerts themselves are an absolute blast.
The real secret is that Tobias is really into music and popular music. And not only that he wants to make popular music, he understands how it works, and he wirtes good stuff.
If they have trouble finding choral singers again they could maybe look for ones disillusioned by the system. They're not uncommon but difficult to search for as methods available aren't exactly geared towards finding such people who probably don't want to be sought by the usual (religiously orientated) hirers
In the lore of the band, this song was "originally" released in 1969 by the "first" singer, who is now called Papa Nihil. It was "re-released" in 2019 to celebrate the 50th Anniversary. The music of Ghost was a bit heavier, grungier, when they started, but as they've evolved and "changed singers" almost every album/tour cycle, they've gotten a little lighter, but still party-rock songs. The mystery of the Nameless Ghouls is a thin veil that's easily pierced, but that's collectively accepted by fans. That's just part of the fun of being a fan. Of course it's not real, but it's a collective, consciously-accepted illusion. For the real behind the scenes, they're a Swedish band, and the creator, Tobias Forge, has very little accent left. But on-stage, it takes on a flavor very much like the Count from Sesame Street (in my opinion). It's just so damn much fun. The Ghouls are out there having fun on stage, the crowd eats it up. I can't say enough good things about the band, the music, or the live shows.
as far as their general sound, id also say ghost likes to intentionally emulate different forms of music. Seven inches of satanic panic for instance is very clearly emulating music of the 60s/70s. With Impera, it seems it is tackling 80s style stadium rock as a primary influence. As for earlier songs being heavier, thats not untrue, but even in opus eponymous, songs like Elizabeth i wouldnt say are heavy really. For the most part its been kind of a mix through the different albums. People i think expect a black metal sound, though ghost is more so black metal in theme primarily rather than musically.
@@saoliath5000 I absolutely love that about Ghost's music. You can so clearly hear the music that influenced Ghost's sound but they still manage to make original tracks. Tobias really has a talent for that. IMO of course.
Interesting note: Tobias Forge, the brains behind this band, says that, originaly, he did NOT want to be the band's vocalist. But after no one expressed enough interest, he decided to do the job himself. Did his original idea involved a "bigger" voice? Maybe by carefully developing and controling his relatively limited instrument, the band gained a sound, identity, and success, that it never would have otherwise? You just can't plan outcomes like that!
If I’m not mistaken, their live performance of Call Me Little Sunshine from the Kimmel Show is nominated for a Grammy if you’re interested in diving into Ghost! As a fellow musician, the complexity of their layers is truly something to behold!
Tobias Forge is a legitimate genius. His musicianship, his marketing strategy, his theater productions, etc. are all absolutely brilliant. This guy is one of the most talented performers out there right now.
@@riso9059 yes, below average. At first I thought it’s a random 80s rock song from some 3rd-echelon below average rock band who’s name you won’t remember.

I discovered these guys opening for Iron Maiden. I had no expectations for them, I was there for the headliner, and after about 3 songs they had my complete attention, and I wanted to hear more. I went out the next day, picked up the CD, and have been hooked since.

He has such a fantastic rhythm this song is hauntingly beautiful and absorbing. It goes from high-pitched contra tenor to lower bass almost baritone where it slows down..beautiful
Close behind Ghost's extraordinary performance is your enthusiasm and how into the song you are. Aaah, yet another soul enthralled with Tobias Forge's genius 🖤✌️ welcome to the club
Tobias did say that when the song sounds happy, he likes to make the lyrics really dark. So I sometimes find myself in the middle of the grocery, singing happily about my friend death. I love Ghost! 😁
I think one of the ingredients to the Grateful Dead's success, to veer to a different sort of band that is maybe like Ghost in a way, is that so many of their bouncy, happy-ish, and even hooky songs were actually very grim and dark stories. I think you need that contrast to avoid a certain ridiculousness in music.
Ghost is my favorite band , i love their sound and the style they provide is just awesome , that´s the core elemet band are missing this days , love the voice , the piano , the guitars and rythms with the bass lines and drums :0 just amazing. .... .. . .
My 14 year old stepdaughter was listening to this song really loudly during her shower, when she came out I asked why she was listening to it. She said it's because it's a cool song and she wants to hear more of their stuff but her mum didn't tell her who it was and had just downloaded it for her. I told her it's Ghost, one of my favorite bands ever and she freaked out going ''EWWWWW no! No, don't like it anymore!'' Hahaha, I've been trying to get her to listen to Ghost for a while but she thinks they are old peoples music because I listen to it. She still likes the song 😄

Coming from a classically trained musician, you can most certainly tell Tobias has taken vocal lessons over the course of the last couple years. I first really noticed in the live sympathy for the devil video. He has a beautiful bright tenor range but you can tell he has worked on supporting his lower range. The vowel pronunciation and the placed vibrato really add to it as well. Even though he has a nose injury, he’s really made noticeable improvements in his singing.
Sorry to disappoint you. He spoke about this in a interview with Bandit Rock Radio here in Sweden and he only have taken two. One of them was when he lost his voice and the other one was more a lesson on how your personal life can effect your voice.

Although they use a lot of keyboards, this song was written under the ghost storyline as being written in the 60s. And Papa Nihil, the character who is in charge of the whole satanic Church in the storyline, was supposedly the original singer. When in reality it's all Tobias Forge. It's just part of the fun of the whole concept of the band.
I saw these guys for the first time in Glasgow in 2019. They're the last band I saw pre-COVID. I only knew a handful of their songs and they blew me away. Amazing show. Fabulous musicianship. Recommend: Rats, Square Hammer and Spillways x
Didn't expect to see this one. Really really glad you checked this one out, tobias not only sounds fantastic live on this one. But so does his back up singers, particularly the female vocals backing him up they sound fantastic.
This is one of the few songs I think I enjoyed the live version more than the record version. This song is the reason I am actively keeping an eye out for a concert date.

I’ve seen Ghost three times and each time has been nothing less than amazing, spectacular, outstanding, etc so many other adjectives! Tobias and the whole band is spectacular! 🖤 I’ve loved them for so long and I’ll continue be a huge fan for life. Tobias the lead singer is also a very genuine person and if anyone ever has the chance to meet him don’t pass it up!🖤
I LOVE LOVE LOVE your reaction and THIS is exactly how I became a fan. I was watching a video on RUclips and this video from Tampa popped up. I’ve been HOOKED ever since. Cant wait to see Ghost/Tobias in CT come August. 🎉
Although I've always loved extreme metal I've become a real Ghost fan through the years and even within their extraordinary catalogue I must say this song really is something else. Every time I hear it, it affects me emotionally and almost on a daily basis. To see how you reacted on this song almost brought me to tears...thx for making that connection.
I've been listening to Ghost since their first album. I'm happy to see them gain mainstream appeal, and more people finding them. Great review of their work. Glad they made a new fan.
The songs are not overly high and you can actually sing the song with the right notes - really nice to sing along ❤ Got hooked from the first time I heard it
When I grew up, this was called Symphonic Rock, and the voice is such a surprise to me. It sounds like the old Uriah Heap and the way he plays the crowd!! And just tonight on September 19, 2023 I found these videos. Mary on a Cross, really grows on me. That voice!
I discovered this song casually watching some shorts of anime and marvel and I admit it was a big positive shock❤ I suggest listening about this one some versions: slowed down, slowed down + reverb and sped up. ❤
Heard them 10 yrs ago....grandson is a drummer and loves them. This song is really good in so many ways. We have a funk group: Here Come the Mummies, who get to Wisconsin every year and you can't get into the park it's so crowded. Yes they are 'mummies' and their music is so good.
From my home town 🙂 For it's size it has a remarkable rock scene, many local bands that I regret not having a record from. When I first learned about Ghost I sincerely pondered if it was my former classmates (wasn't)!
I could imagine a Ghost being a bit like a Rocky Horror showing with full audience participation. Been into them since I heard "Square Hammer". I also love their acoustic cover of Rocky Ericson's "If you have Ghosts". The last two albums have been more in the style of earlier rock, Prequelle very 80's, Imperia more late 70's.
I will also say that their albums and their live performances are so different, but yet so captivating and iconic in their own way you could listen to the same song twice, and still be amazed by the difference
I am shamed to admit that I have watched your videous well over a year now, but I keep coming back for two reasons: First, you explain to other mortals what is happenig when someone sings and what makes it great, but also give us a genuine reaction. Thank you Beth! And you are very lovely. My main point here is though letting these mortal feelings flow away from this: There is in music and it's presentation, both by instruments, but more often by the vocalist in best scenario, a deep connection between listener and performer and those feels. Despite of the fact that many people like me concider classical pieces high, something always about human voice as an istrument makes it more real... If it makes any sense and then there are the lyrics too, but the way it is delivered makes the biggest difference. Most moving pieces are those who touch your inner feelings. That is without giving any reply before ofc;)
You really should listen to more of their different papa - era songs ;) you are in for a ride because each papa has his " characteristics" a bit and themes change also slightly. but Ghost is def worth a listen and/or seeing live
Yes!! Please do more Ghost stuff, there is so much going on with their music. They are constantly evolving since their first album and I loved every single one of them. No matter what mood your in, there is a Ghost song for it! :D
I was at this concert! It was my third time seeing Ghost, second as a headlining act. Their concerts are always fun. They really know how to put on a great live show. Seeing them live is what actually turned me into a fan.
You wanna make me Cry Beth! Ghost are an amazing and (a while ago) also mysterious band... often associated to the metal world despite they don't play heavy metal... I've seen them live years ago in a small club in italy. I was less than two meters from Tobias, (the singer) feet. Thank You so much for this video!

I’ve seen Ghost three times and each time has been nothing less than amazing, spectacular, outstanding, etc so many other adjectives! Tobias and the whole band is spectacular! 🖤 I’ve loved them for so long and I’ll continue be a huge fan for life. Tobias the lead singer is also a very genuine person and if anyone ever has the chance to meet him don’t pass it up!🖤
You got Beth to react to Ghost? Amazing guys. Now that we have the foot in the door may I humbly recommend Cirice?
We’re spreading! Now we gotta work on CharasmaticVoice 😂👻🖤
@@BrandonSantiagoOfficial I like the cut of your jib.
I was at this show! My first time seeing them. I was blown away! One of my favorite bands now! 🤘🏼
FINALLY SOMEONE REACTING TO GHOST I'M SO HAPPYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
I've been listening to Ghost since their first album. I'm happy to see them gain mainstream appeal, and more people finding them.
Great review of their work. Glad they made a new fan.
I‘ve watched the Tampa Video for like 100 times now and I still can‘t enough of it 🔥
My favorite band being reviewed by my favorite vocal coach youtuber 😍😭😭 oh my lil heart string are soo happy right now!❣️
I f*ckin love this band!
Please do "Spillways" for the next reaction!
The songs are not overly high and you can actually sing the song with the right notes - really nice to sing along ❤
Got hooked from the first time I heard it
When I grew up, this was called Symphonic Rock, and the voice is such a surprise to me. It sounds like the old Uriah Heap and the way he plays the crowd!! And just tonight on September 19, 2023 I found these videos. Mary on a Cross, really grows on me. That voice!
The nun in the first chorus really got me.
Damn its soo beautyful to see how she is enjoying the moment. just nice! shes really beautyful
I discovered this song casually watching some shorts of anime and marvel and I admit it was a big positive shock❤
I suggest listening about this one some versions: slowed down, slowed down + reverb and sped up. ❤
Love Ghost! There are also 3 female singers in the band which gives it that choir sound, something unique I would like to see in other bands.
Heard them 10 yrs ago....grandson is a drummer and loves them. This song is really good in so many ways. We have a funk group: Here Come the Mummies, who get to Wisconsin every year and you can't get into the park it's so crowded. Yes they are 'mummies' and their music is so good.
I discovered this song from the TWD shorts on RUclips and now I have their entire Playlist on Spotify. I can't get enough of it
I love watching the reactions on this. It's fun to see visual documentation of somebody becoming a Ghost fan in real-time.
ya tenía tiempo que no veia clips de este canal, me impresiona el crecimiento profesional de Beth, le deseo buena suerte.
From my home town 🙂
For it's size it has a remarkable rock scene, many local bands that I regret not having a record from. When I first learned about Ghost I sincerely pondered if it was my former classmates (wasn't)!
he does have a beautiful voice
I could imagine a Ghost being a bit like a Rocky Horror showing with full audience participation.
Been into them since I heard "Square Hammer". I also love their acoustic cover of Rocky Ericson's "If you have Ghosts". The last two albums have been more in the style of earlier rock, Prequelle very 80's, Imperia more late 70's.
Always enjoy your reactions! I love Ghost and I'm glad you've come back to them! Looking forward to more!
Me too!
Brilliant breakdown of one of the catchiest tunes I've ever heard!
This song rules the heart of every teenagers ❤
..but it's from the late 1960s!! 😛
Year zero, has so many meaning, all true, especially in today's time. A must listen
Yes!! Please do more Ghost stuff, there is so much going on with their music. They are constantly evolving since their first album and I loved every single one of them. No matter what mood your in, there is a Ghost song for it! :D
Seeing them for the 5th time live in August. Absolutely awesome band to see live.
Love the way Ghost appeal to both men and woman, Music is so fun and interesting! :)
Omg, love your energy on this reaction to the beat! ❤
You have to see them live if theyre ever in your area. Definitely a once in a lifetime experience.
the arrangement is insanely awesome!!!!!
your facial expresions as you hear the song are so telling and reflecting of the deep emotionality of the song, its really something!
I'm a bit of an emotional sponge. A blessing with a tricky to handle side that has taken a bit of work to understand. :)
Seen them twice live in London. Absolutely amazing live.
I was at that show. Great performance, and the vocals are always spot on. Highly recommended.
I was at this concert! It was my third time seeing Ghost, second as a headlining act. Their concerts are always fun. They really know how to put on a great live show. Seeing them live is what actually turned me into a fan.
I find it very impressive how Tobias is able to change his voice for each character. You should check that out and do a reaction video.
🎸"If you choose to run away with me, I will tickle you internally. And I see nothing wrong with that." 🎶
I've seen Ghost 3 times and every time was equally amazing
You wanna make me Cry Beth! Ghost are an amazing and (a while ago) also mysterious band... often associated to the metal world despite they don't play heavy metal... I've seen them live years ago in a small club in italy. I was less than two meters from Tobias, (the singer) feet. Thank You so much for this video!
I’ve seen them live and they sound great. They have a lot interesting and catchy songs.
Love the channel….keep it up Beth!!
Ghost is amazing live! I saw them in Youngstown and every song sounds like it's coming straight from the radio 💗.
Definitely check out more of their music. They are a very well done piece of performance art. Its basically a 10+ year-long opera. Its amazing.
You would totally love Ghost. They're awesome live and lot of fun.
My favorite band!!❤
Favorite band, He Is, Square Hammer, Spillways, Elizabeth, From The Pinnacle To The Pit, Witch Image, Call Me Little Sunshine, Deus In Absentia, Rats, Dance Macabre, so many amazing songs.
This reaction put a smile to my face. So happy you enjoyed Ghost 🖤
