You did a fine job, Paul discussing the Manics and Richey’s disappearance 👏 ✊ It’s such a sensitive issue for fans but you presented a well-researched and succinct overview with grace and style.
As for Manics albums I think each of you would connect with, here goes…
Tommy - ‘Generation Terrorists’ (Because it rocks!)
Paul - ‘Everything Must Go’ (Because of its orchestral grandeur)
Crystal - ‘The Holy Bible’ (Because of Crystal’s love for post-punk music, and it’s some of the best post-punk ever committed to tape, although the lyrics are often harrowing. Not an easy listen, but also essential)

Actually, that Ting Tings album is a 2008 release. I checked my copy just to be sure. If it's any consolation for y'all, after the fact. Kudos comrades. Love your weekly vids and have begun watching them obsessively 'as it should be' folks...

Crystal - The Ting Tings and Portishead, nice!
Paul - You often have albums I don’t know but I was happy to see Jarvis, The Clientele, Arctic Monkeys, Camera Obscura, and the Manics (the last two artists I’ve listened to at fellow AISB fan Christian’s suggestion. He undoubtedly will be thrilled by their inclusion on your list!) Also, kudos for making it to 10 albums.

Here I was, primed to explain where the name Death Cab for Cutie came from, and Tommy went and stole my thunder. (Yes, it's the song that the Bonzos perform in Magical Mystery Tour, and it appears on their debut album, Gorilla.) Thanks a lot, Tommy! But hey, you came up with AI Frehley, so I guess it all evens out.
And now, for my top ten:
Honorable Mention: Up to Now, Snow Patrol (I can't really include it in my top ten because it's a compilation, but I love this stuff...)
    10. Raditude, Weezer (even though most people DETEST this album, I think it has a couple of decent songs and it's the only Weezer album I actually like, so what the hell, might as well)
    9. Breakthrough, Colbie Caillat (again, what the hell, might as well)
    8. Far, Regina Spektor
    7. Hold Time, M Ward
    6. Battle Studies, John Mayer (which I am pretty sure will be Mr Mayer's last appearance on one of my lists)
    5. Sonic Boom, Kiss (not a great album, but definitely better than anything they had done for, what, 25 years?)
    4. Give Up the Ghost, Brandi Carlile
    3. The Planeteer, Julian Velard
    2. Mr Lucky, Chris Isaak
    1. Little White Lies, Fastball
I almost put The Ting Tings on my list last year (We Started Nothing was released in 2008, not 2009, sorry Crystal). I heard the singles and thought they were okay, but then I saw footage of them performing at Glastonbury and thought they were really impressive. If that album had come out this year, it would be up in my top five, but 2008 was such a strong year that it didn't make the cut. Oh well, such is life.

Ha! I mentioned on our AISB text thread that The Ting Tings was a 2008 album but it wouldn't matter because surely there weren't any Ting Tings geeks out there who would go "hey, waaaaaait a minute!". I stand corrected.

2009. A few classic(for me) and some I maintain a residency on my eternal soundtrack to life. An amazing debut album and a career best for band three albums into their career. So here we go...
    HMs:
    Girls - Album
    Atlas Sound - Logos
    The Flaming Lips - Embryonic
Cold Cave - Love Comes Close
White Lies - To Lose My Life
    Franz Ferdinand - Tonight
    10. Manic Street Preachers - Journal of Plague Lovers
    9. Big Pink - A Brief History of Love
    8. Doves - Kingdom of Rust
    7. Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavillion
    6. Grizzly Bear - Veckatimest
    5. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - It's Blitz
    4. Mando Diao - Give Me Fire
    3. The Horrors - Primary Colours
    2. The XX - s/t
    1. Kasabian - West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum

Your inclusion of Cold Cave gives me hope for some reason that you may have Boy Harsher on a future list. We shall see. I forgot all about The xx … I could listen to Intro on repeat. It’s so soothing. I had my years wrong with White Lies and thought it was ‘08. I bet To Lose My Life is better than Hot Fuss. I think they did this style much better than The Killers: the shouty new wavey tinged anthems. They’ll appear for me again later. I adore Harry McVeigh’s vocals.

Hi Gang, Sold me on Lee Fields.
Guessing putting up a picture of The Verve instead of Oasis was deliberate since Paul said he never wanted to mention them, lol. I'm admittedly an Oasis fan and that last album, it's good.
At this point just putting down albums I own because don't have enough from these years to actually rank favorites. 3, I still own 3 albums from 2009, Florence and the Machine-Lungs; Phoenix-Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix; U2-No Line on the Horizon, which is terribly dull.

    Well awlright!
    Hiya, everyone 👋
I really had to go and have a good old wander around my Musical Mind Palace for 2009, but I managed to dredge up some picks I was actually - and actively - listening to upon year of release! For me, this was easier said than done 🤔
I’m fully expecting to be learning a whole lot more about 2009 from other lists, so I’m really looking forward to having a nosey at them 😆
***UPDATE***: Massive shoutout to Curly for listing my new #1 and making me realise I had its release date mixed up in my swede! I NEVER retrospectively change my lists once they’re uploaded, but I simply had to with this one. It’s a magnificent album and I honestly thought it was a 2010 release. I didn’t check online! The Musical Mind Palace needs a spring clean 🧹 As great as those Horrors and Pains of Being Pure at Heart records are, Rowland is king now for 2009 👑 Thanks for seeing me right, Curly! 🙏
    1 - Rowland S. Howard - ‘Pop Crimes’ (‘I Know) a Girl Called Jonny’)
2 - The Horrors - ‘Primary Colours’ (‘Sea within a Sea’) TIED WITH The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - ‘The Pains of Being Pure at Heart’ (‘Everything with You’)
    3 - The xx - ‘xx’ (‘VCR’)
4 - Richard Hawley - ‘Truelove’s Gutter’ (‘Open Up Your Door’)
5 - Wild Beasts - ‘Two Dancers’ (‘This is Our Lot’)
I managed to find a couple of HMs too…
Manic Street Preachers - ‘Journal for Plague Lovers’ (‘Marlon JD’)
Franz Ferdinand - ‘Tonight: Franz Ferdinand’ - (‘What She Came For’)

Hello again, Christian. Great list as always. i have been trying to get into The Horrors. I tried a few years ago . . and now I am trying again because you rank them so highly. Interesting sound. I need to give them some time and concentration. . . . I remember liking the xx at the time this album was released but unfortunately I didn't get a chance to do a critical re-listen for today's list. May possibly be an HM. . .. . Speaking of HMs I am glad to see Franz Ferdinand there on your HM list. Not quite as strong as their first two albums but still really, really good. . . . The Pains of Being Pure at Heart was actually on my "listen list" but unfortunately I didn't get to that one either. Now the issue has been forced! 😀 I will let you know . . I will catch up with you soon, my friend. Have a good evening.

@@NaughtyVampireGod Hello, again NVG! Always a pleasure to hear from you my friend, and I do sincerely hope you have had a great week. Thank you so much for the kind words as regards my list this week - always appreciated 🙏 I haven’t had a chance to peruse anyone’s lists as yet, and it’s getting late over here (almost midnight), so I may wait until later tomorrow now so I take them all in with fresh eyes. Yes, The Horrors are one of those bands who can change their sound very effectively. Their band name runs the risk of seeing them pigeonholed, but they defy really definitive categorisation (aside from ‘rock’ of course) because of the different sub-genres they have inhabited, seemingly effortlessly. You may prefer ‘Primary Colours’ as a starting point because it’s more of a shoegaze/psych sound. If you give it a go, please do let me know! The xx record is just really relaxing, in the same way I find ‘Colossal Youth’ by Young Marble Giants relaxing, so if you’re in the mood for chilled post-punk, I think you would find much to enjoy from either of these records. I respect your decision though to not have ‘xx’ as a contender for your 2009 list if you hadn’t had the chance to really appraise it in detail. Totally agree also with your comments on the third Franz Ferdinand album 👍🏻 It never hit me as hard as the first two, but I was excited for it upon release and I have fond memories playing it 😊 Now as for The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, something tells me you’ll really dig it. My understanding is you enjoy fuzzy guitar indie pop with sugar-sweet melodies - a la early My Bloody Valentine, the Jesus and Mary Chain and Ride? If so, I would strongly suggest you bump this up in your listening pile. It’s a lovely album that pays tribute to all that brilliant twee pop that was all the rage with NME readers during the mid-eighties, but has just enough of an identity as to not feel irrelevant. I find myself going back to it a lot, so I would love to know what you think of it, Naughty. If its inclusion on my list has forced your hand somewhat, that’s great! 😆 Great catching up with you and let’s do it again soon. All the best and have a good evening too!

Pop Crimes is a great song. I thought it was released in 2016? Maybe I got a re-release? I cherry picked a few tracks. My list is up. A fee twinsie moments. My number one is an album I still very much love. It’s just great from start to finish. Where did all the love go is my Kasabian anthem. Slaps my face so hard. It’s not the same band without Tom. Serge had basucally made them the SLP(his side project). But, I’m sure you’ll see some albums you know and possibly like. The XX hit big time to my ear holes with that sparse yet so damn catchy sound. The YYYs went a bit more mainstream, but still had the songs to bring everyone with them. I may thrown a few curveballs…feel free to inquire about…:)

Screw you, I like Oasis. Ha! They didn't release anything this year. It was the previous year they released what would be their final album. Hooray for you, I guess. ;)
So, ok then, 2009. I have a top 6, so here goes:
    6. It's Blitz! - The Yeah Yeah Yeahs (Sort of their KISS Dynasty in that most people say this is their "disco" or "techno" album when it's just really a few tracks that are like that. I was hesitant about this album due to the musical direction they were going, but those two tracks, which are conveniently the first two tracks on the album and would be the first two singles off it, were very catchy and irresistible. Took me a while to get into this album as a whole, but it's good. People at the time were apparently ranking it as their BEST album, but now, their first, Fever To Tell, seems to be the one getting the most love.)
    5. The Crying Light - Antony/Anohni and the Johnsons (Shout-out to @michelewiese48. ;) Like I said before when talking about I Am A Bird Now some videos ago, her voice does take some getting used to. VERY unique. But once you "get it", it's incredible, really.)
    4. Wild Young Hearts - Noisettes (If you've never heard it before, check out the song Never Forget You off this album. There's a video for it too if you wanna see it. You're welcome. Ha. The whole album doesn't really sound like it, but the song should be enough to wet your appetite for it at least.)
    3. 21st Century Breakdown - Green Day (Is it better or as good as American Idiot? No. Is it still good nonetheless? Yes. Yes, it is.)
    2. In And Out Of Control - The Raveonettes (Bang and Last Dance. Check those songs and/or videos out. If you dig 'em, you'll probably like the rest of the album too. Ha.)
    1. St. Valentine's Day Massacre - The Cocktail Slippers (The title track, You Do Run, In The City, their cover of Don't Ever Leave Me. Like 'em? You'll LOVE the rest of the album. Ha. Steven Van Zandt co-producing and even writing a few of the songs on it as well, btw.)
If you didn't wanna cut to the commercials, Paul, you didn't have to. Commercials stopped being at least "tolerable" by the mid-2000s anyway. Ha.
I know the Pretenders released an album called Break Up The Concrete in 2009 which did get some positive attention. Not sure about the other bands mentioned there, though.
Simon Cowell. What does it say when someone with no musical talent of their own is judging other people's musical talents? Not only that, but making MILLIONS doing it too? Troubling, really. 'Kinda wish Clay Aiken and Ruben Studdard did a buddy cop movie together, actually. Ha.
Yeah, I remember the Ting Tings. Two-person group. One man and one woman. After the White Stripes, that thing was sort after for a while. Tat Ting was sort after? Nevermind.
I have Cheap Trick's The Latest. Came in a very flimsy packaging, I remember. Not sure if it was a "special editon" or just how it came. Either way, few songs aside, I didn't really bother much with it, frankly. I remember the title "The Latest" on the cover looking like the Beatles logo lettering too.
The problem with KISS' Sonic Boom was that it wasn't the original lineup and Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer were in the Spaceman and Catman makeup. Put images of the original lineup on the album artwork instead, maybe more people, including me, would dig it. Ha. It's not like they've never done anything like that before, right? I mean, Ace and Peter were on, what, TWO tracks on Psycho Circus? Plus, some of the previous albums don't have basically what's advertised on the cover all the way through? Oh, well. Btw, I hear AI Ace Frehley will be replacing AI Tommy Thayer when Avatar KISS officially debuts in a few years. ;)
You can't talk about guitarists that play up to their chests without mentioning one of THE pioneers of that, Gerry Marsden from Gerry and the Pacemakers. Respect.
Man, the Dap-Kings RULED the late-2000s, huh? Amy Winehouse, Sharon Jones, Charles Bradley, Lee Fields, etc. Don't think I've heard of Lee Fields, but the more I heard about from you guys, the more I dig him. :)
I never heard any Led Zeppelin albums all the way through yet, so I'll have nothing for next week, but I'm looking forward to the ranking video either way. I have a feeling it's more for Tommy than anything else, though. ;)

    5. Adam Lambert - For Your Entertainment
    4. Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears - Tell 'Em What Your Name Is!
    3. Chrisette Michele - Epiphany
2 La Roux - La Roux
    1. Living Colour - The Chair In The Doorway
    My Worst Of 2009:
U2 - No Line On The Horizon (this is where I left the U2 train especially with Get On Your Boots)

    Anything by Justin Bieber
    Anything by Joe Budden
    Eminem - Relapse

Hello My Friend. Another strong list! La Roux is certainly a "bubbling under" (for me). Bulletproof made my song list and the rest of the album is quite good indeed especially In For the Kill. Have a great day, UBR. 😎

Yeah, I never got No Line On The Horizon. I got the next two, though, including the infamous iTunes album. Ha.

@@NaughtyVampireGod Hi my friend NVG!! Thank you! This one was pretty hard for me but I've pulled it off. I remember seeing the Bulletproof video on TheCoolTV (which it was a music channel that played videos like Franz Ferdinand next to Eurythmics and then afterwards BB King, etc) and really enjoy it. So I check out the album from the library and really enjoy it. Hope you have a great day as well my friend.

@@UniversalBlackRocker Couple of good songs on them both, but yeah, overall... just ok. And I certainly didn't get their latest Songs Of Surrender which is them re-recording some of their older material. I'll stick with the originals, thank you. Ha

Nice to see a fellow West Ryder on here. Easily their best album. It’s still a regular listen for me. The YYYs went more mainstream, but the songs still shines. I loved the raw rough stuff of the first album, but I can’t deny some bangers on It’s Blitz. I’m familiar with most on your list and some would have made my top twenty, but I have never heard of your number one choice. I’ll look it up:

Hi Naughty, Fantastic list. Here’s a little way our 2009 lists connect (your #3 and my #1) Emily Haines played a sexy vamp in Julian Plenti’s music video “Games For Days” .. I’ve never listened to Metric but I should probably check them out!

Hey, Naughty! Such a lovely list and I forgot all about the Fiery Furnaces album 😳 That was one I was listening to back then, but slipped my mind! I’m familiar with a good few others too (Muse, Green Day etc.) but your description of your #1 pick has instantly intrigued me. I’ve never heard of it, so I’ll have to check it out. I’m going to watch a Beatles tribute act tonight at a pub in town, so I’m sure listening to some of the Fab Four’s psychedelic moments will put me in the mood for some more of the stuff over the weekend! Brilliant work as always, my friend, and wishing you a Happy Friday!
