Cherry Springs State Park: Pennsylvania's International Dark Sky Park

- Here is what I saw on my June trip to Cherry Springs State Park, located in Potter County, PA. Due to its relatively high elevation (2,300 ft.) and isolated location, Cherry Springs is a fantastic place to see the shadow of our Milky Way galaxy, as well as other constellations and planets. Be sure to check the weather and stargazing forecasts before you visit though!

I went on July, It was a little cloudy, but it is worth it.
I drove 13 hours from ATL.
For me this was the only chance I had to visit, I don't know if in a near future I will have another chance to view this amazing place.
Thanks.
Question•Mark it’s very noticeable, any time it’s not cloudy it’s super clear
@@MikNic stargazing is best during new moon and clear skies
Spruce Knob WV is another great, dark location. a BIT closer haha
That brought a tear to my eye, thank you
I would hunt in that area. At night the sky was spectacular. It got to the point it was worth the trip from Pittsburgh just to sit on a mountain in the snow all nite and watch the magnificent sky, then head home in the morning catching a Mickey D’s big breakfast along the way. Life was good! The heck with the hunt.
Loved those days!
The pure bright glitter of our milkyway was astounding there. I am an astrophotographer. Easily the brightest views I have ever seen....like one could reach up and touch the stars.... It is simply unforgettable.
Putting this on my list fot camping. Thanks for valuable info and photos
Anyone who lives close to that park is very lucky. I wish the park was in my back yard. I would sure enjoy that.
Its absolutely stunning. Im going there with my mom and brother on the 21st of this January. Im so excited.
Liked #456, Awesome preparation for the magical nightsly photos! Lucky to have such a clear sky to get one of the arms of Milky Way 😀 beautiful photo!!! Watched the full video, liked button and comment in appreciation to support the right way, happy to support your channel 😊 Happy new year, take care 😎👍
It’s so pretty. We were a little out of the park in a big field. The weather was perfect and the stars were beautiful.
Is it cool to go in the summer?
I am somewhat of an amateur "expert" on Cherry Spring. :-) Brought my kids there in May 2010. Didn't see much of the Milky Way because it was May. Went back August 2015 with the family but this time there was a full moon. Again, didn't see much. My family didn't want to go back a third time so I went with my dog for the 5 hour drive from NJ in November 2022. Made sure it was a new moon and the weather was clear. It was beautiful. Never saw so many stars in the sky. You can see the haze of the Milky Way. It was a cold night in November but it was well worth it.
You should try to go to island beach state park. Its in nj and its nice.
That's beautiful. Thank you so much for posting this. 💜🙆♀️ 💜usa
Very nice footage. I saw a wonderful night sky like this last August when I visited Vermont.
Thank you for sharing the video ❤️
2.5 hrs from my house in NY can’t wait to go Sunday night
Definitely check the forecast before you go. My family drove 6 hours and saw only 4 stars 😂
Nooo lmaooo 😭💀
RIP
Do these places actually look like the pictures? Like can you actually see the different hues and colors or is that an post editing effect?
I live near Cherry Springs. Already planning summer trips
Wow. Beautiful
I saw that there is a possibility to see aurora borealis there. Do you happen to know what time of year is best for that?
Never really, I mean you’d need one strong solar storm to see an aurora that far south from the North Pole.
@@TheCosmicGuy0111 thanks.
@kevin thats why i live in Canada its very nice here in the north
Maybe tonight or tomorrow night
@@CROOKONE Oh that's why you live in Canada?
Going tomorrow...cant wait
Going in 1 month
how was it?
I’m going in 5 days and have been asking my parents for 2 years
Beautiful photos
Can you see the milky way with your eyes?
I grew up in north jersey right outside New York city. Never got to see stars. Does it really look like this ? Please let me know cuz I will go there asap. "Fugaboud it"
Hi, I appreciate the question! The pictures at the end of the video are a bit “dramatized” as they were taken using a method of photography called long exposure and were additionally edited using computer software, albeit lightly. With the naked eye, you can actually see the Milky Way quite clearly, but it is less bright and colorful than what is presented in the pictures. Imagine a vast, faintly glowing white cloud. With that said, if you want to see stars, especially for the first time in your life (I think that’s crazy!), I definitely recommend taking a trip to the park as you will be amazed by just how many stars and planets are actually visible with the naked eye. Plus it’s always fun camping! So download a good stargazing guide app, reference when the moon will be least impactful, and check the weather profusely before you go, and you will be have an awesome time!
@@jopejackworld Heyyyyy. I never though about the moonlight lessening the experience. Thanks.
did you go?
@@furiousflame9037 yea I did and it was AMAZING, still cant believe it.
@@jr4338 nice dude!!!!!! Going this summer, I can't wait my man!
Do you pay the 15 dollars for the overnight observation field when you get there or you have to do it online?
Hi, you pay when you get there. You just put the money into a provided envelope, fill out the requested info on the envelope (name and license plate number if I remember correctly) and drop it in a box.
This is amazing. Do you have any idea if there is similar place in NYC ?
@Samira Al Otaibi there isn't. Too much light pollution. You would need to go somewhere far away from the city. I saw a sky like this in Vermont.
So everybody has pics of the place but no video?😐

I heard you can see northern lights from here , is this true??
It would be extremely rare
Goat Group jus because of elevation and latitude? bc this is one of the darkest skies on the east coast id imagine its a good place to see it
@@pushintree it’s too far south
@@bamabelle7075 I actually just went here on June 9
@@pushintree Typically auroras are only seen in the upper and lower extremes of the earth
