I've heard the Behringer origin story before but I'm most curious about that middle bit that gets skipped over where somehow Uli went from being a college kid making things for his buddies to building a city-sized manufacturing complex in China.

Arguably Alesis started it (or the company formally known as Alesis) with the Andromeda. That was the only new analog poly of the early 2000s. They were so ahead of the curve that it put them out of business because everyone thought that virtual analog was the future. Korg came in late with Tats at the helm of Korgs personal analog revival. Behringer is so late to the game that it’s not nearly as relevant. The fact that you can get an almost exact replica of a Minimoog from them for under $300 yet it’s not in every single studio speaks to that point. It’s nice what they’re doing but it’s kind of too little too late the analog revolution is so far along that most of us what NEW analog designs like what sequential are doing or even more what all of the eurorack manufactures are doing that’s where the real bleeding edge is right now

The bleeding edge are young creative people that are just starting with their musical journeys, building their first studios. They don’t buy Sequential, lol. There’s the hole world of young people that want to create electronic music, not just privileged countries like Uk, US, EU or whatever..

Ah analogue synths. the LP or CDs of the new age. Since people dont spend money on media items anymore we need to fill that craving with other toys. Hey i like synths and playing around with them, but honestly when it comes time to make music i use software.

Great video. I enjoyed it. I personally love Behringer right now. I bought the Poly D recently. Loved it so much I went and bought the RD-8 followed by the TD-3. All bought within a month. Love all 3 pieces. Next to buy will be the MS-1 along with the Deepmind 12. As soon as they drop, I will buy the RD-9 and the MonoPoly. 2021 will be a fun year making music with all Behringer equipment.

My friend owns a music store here in town. He told me about the DeepMind 12 because he is a Behringer dealer. Anyway one day, we got a shipment and included was the DM12. I actually got to unbox it and put it on display. This was back in 2017. The synth sat in the store for 3 years. 3 years later in 2020, I won my disability case (at this time I was no longer working for the store). I asked him if he still had it. He said definitely yes. Since I was the original one to unbox it and always enquire about it, I asked him how much would he want for it. He sold it to me, with the bag, for $499.00. AMAZING deal.

Thank you for noticing the Deepmind, I hadnt´this device in mind for years plusI didnt realise that it is nearly a Juno 106. I ordered the Pro-1 and the Model D, and the deepmind is my next one.
I have the Behringer MS-1, it's one of the best analog monophonic synthesizers that I've owned. There is a lot a sounds that can be made with that one synth. They did a great job regarding the weighted keys and the metal case on the sides and bottom.. heavy but solid for certain.
The MS-1 is plastic though? Do you mean a different synth?
@@Renzsu The Behringer MS-1 is NOT plastic feeling and is much heavier than you may believe. It weighs about 10lbs, I imagine.

@@xa1a I never mentioned the SH-101… I was of the belief the MS-01 enclosure was fully plastic, so I was surprised when he mentioned it had a metal case on the sides and bottom. Once this chip shortage is over, behringer is going to rule the synth world for a hot minute. Some of the synths they have set to release in the future are just top tier. Im not a fanboy by any means, I don't even own one single peice behringer gear (yet) but you bet your ass I'm contemplating on a combo of a Cs80 with a ppg or an obxa with a prophet 600. I could care less that they are clones, I would never in my life get to even touch most of not all of those synths so getting to own a replica is more than fine by me.

Behringer Wasp is a fun thing, too - and U made another helpful video here. I've just bought 3 "Model D" to connect them to a 3-phonic "Multi-D", controllable by 1 single keyboard. There's a cool video here at youtube that explains how to do this, step by step 8-)
I have a pile of Behringers. I think the neutron is the best of the bunch; I have all three of your also-rans. The Crave is a one-VCO and it's my choice for a quick synth track in my DAW. I think the hardest of them is the Cat, I still cant figure out how to play two oscillators a fifth apart. The TD-3 is mostly built around its sequencer and was the first I bought, realizing later that with a DAW the sequencer isn't as big a deal as it would have been before DAWs. But the TD-3 is $150. I have a 3-rack with a Model D and two neutrons waiting for me to dive in, and a Poly D.
I've got the Wasp and the Odyssey. I love the Wasp, a real dirty sound, but the Odyssey's just fantastic. Just can't leave it alone.

It’s not miss understood it’s that these things will drive the prices down on the originals. Hopefully they will do a SP 1200 with a bigger screen and usb but 12 bit with variable sample rates.

I don't know why everyone complains about how "hard" the TB-303/TD-3 is to use. I don't think it's very hard at all. With a little bit of learning which buttons to push, step programming makes entering bass lines super easy, and going back and editing them isn't that difficult either. If you understand how the step sequencer works, and can keep that in mind while you use it, then it's not very hard to translate a 16-step pattern from your head into the TD-3. I've even done weird stuff like using 14 steps for a 7/8 beat or 10 steps for a 5/8 beat.
I think the TD-3 is a great value, especially RIGHT NOW: there are certain ones for sale on certain websites for as low as $75, which is absolutely ridiculous! (I'm guessing these are a Black Friday deal.) You HAVE to pick one up at that price! But as great a value as it is, it's extremely limited in its sound. It basically does acid bass (extremely well), and that's it. Still, it's an interesting machine that forces you to think about music creation in a different way, and my god is it fun to tweak those knobs!
Behringer will soon be releasing a "Modded Out" version of the TD-3, and I'll say right now that I've heard some not great things about how this might have come about, but it looks like a cool, factory-modified version of the TD-3. They are currently available for preorder at Sweetwater, but for $259, I'll either wait for a sale or mod my own TD-3. I just picked up the Odyssey, which is on sale for $399 right now just about everywhere. That's a no-brainer!
I'm a Reason user and there Redrum device I'd a almost direct emulsion of the TR 808 from Roland 1982 I have used that to make about 90% of all My beats for 16 years,
Looking at picking up some Behringer Synths Deepmind 12, Poly D, Monopoly, Odyssey, 2600 are tops on this plus their semi modular modules as well Neutron Pro-1, K-2 , Model D, Wasp, Cat , Crave
I disagree about the Neutron .. It’s a semi-modular with normalized connections, so you can do all the subtractive synth basics without patching a single cable ...and what an amazingly diverse synth it is; probably more tonal variety than any other Behringer synth in its price point. It’s definitely not like the 2600, where you’re forced to patch to do the basics.
(addendum: it’s also a great synth to learn whether modular/eurorack is right for you. It’s very easy to start small, learning with baby steps.. Like sending the LFO or envelope out to different parameters. Neutron modulation patching is easier to learn than Deepmind, with its huge mod matrix and menu diving. It saved me from investing in an expensive eurorack setup, as I decided the semi-modulars were about as far as I wanted to go.)
Isn't normalization what made the 2600 so awesome compared to a modular?
The Neutron is the only hardware synth I own. I've used a few soft-synths, but I found myself simply cruising through presets, and wanted a 'cheap' synth to teach myself how to create my own sounds.
I'd personally like to trade the BB delay and distortion circuits for say, an actual mixer section and maybe two more attenuators, but I'm using it solely with my DAW which provides better options for delay and distortion.
Having said that, I believe the Neutron is the real bang-for-the-buck standout in Behringer's desktop form factor selection of synths. As far as I can tell, It does everything the others in that lineup can and more.
It's been a great knob per function instrument to learn on, and also allows for dipping a toe into the modular world.
About the td3. It's very cheap and you just need to watch a video or two to learn how to work it. It's really fun because the results of sequencing are quite hard to predict, so it encourages a more experimental approach.😊
I like how you specifically pointed out that the Neutron is its own thing, but didn’t say the same about the (similarly modular) Crave [*cough* *mother-32* *cough* *cough*] … Sometimes, it’s what you *don’t* say … 😉👍🏼

I've got a reasonable collection of vintage synths but no moogs, but I recently got the Behringer Model D. Initially I wasn't sure about it, maybe because I'm not used to Moogs, but after writing a few tracks it sounds great and very good value for money...... Not sure I agree about your 303/TD3 comment, I have a 303 and it's not that hard at all once you've learnt it.... and most 303 users prefer the original 303 software over upgraded cpu's that try to give you a more modern experience. The 303's programming quirkiness is part of its sound.
I love Behringer, but yes early on they didnt have the best quality products. You can see that with their plastic guitar pedals. The sounds they gave were good, but they had a habit of breaking down quickly, especially when you actually used the pedal as a stompbox. But hey, it was really cheap and it was THE stuff that allowed me to experiment with guitar effects back then.
At a lower pricepoint you kind of get to expect some less than stellar performance, but by now, the quality they put out vs the price they ask for their products is insane in the positive sense.
Ordinary people can now actually own a polyphonic MOOG model D synthesizer! I personally often like to bash on capitalism as a system, but at the same time get giddy about this sort of technology reaching the masses.

Surprised you don't have the neutron by itself as one of the top five. I think at $300 it's the best synth deal out there. I sounds great and it isn't a clone. I have two.
Absolutely! Neutron is just insane and opens wide the two worlds analog and modular. Now Dreadbox has little bit invaded this analog quality at low price segment but Neutron stays on top for its modularity
For someone only familiar with VST synth’s in DAW, would you recommend Model D or Neutron for a first synth?
2600 , I have . Will be getting Pro1. B2600 will be staying . I understand why Martin and Vince of Depeche and Erasure likes
As far as clones replicas go, I believe if you’re going for that 100% pure stock sound of the said instrument then that’s what you really want, go get it. because anything else is going to be a temporary fix but if you’ve got your mind made up.... so basically it comes down to beliefs, if you believe that the original is the end all be all and that’s it. Then go get it!
With that being said I believe I have five or six Behringer synthesizers. The MS 1and DM 12. Amazing. My expectations out of the box with the MS 1 , getting a 3340 VCO... and that bang up straight across-the-board Roland‘s seminal slider interface. I have the latest firmware and the FM knob is amazing. I park it right next to the MC 202 and the SH01 a.
I know a lot of people are very picky when it comes to synthesizers and some people they love everything. I actually sent a letter to Uli, commending him on his mission statement or unintentional outcome of putting the music creation tools at a very reasonable price into the hands of a ‘lot !’ of people. It’s more companies were like this, the world would be bombarded with music and people creating and coming together…. This is truly amazing and if I had this opportunity when I was a teenager, when I still lived at home and I didn’t have to work two jobs just to pay my rent, my life could very well have been different in a better way. However I’m extremely grateful at this point in my life to be able to have musical instruments and tools in which I can create with.
So Behringer making clones doesn’t really bother me. It’s all about quality of the instrument does it work to the specifications as advertised, I always hope that there was a genuine effort into making something really good versus the old college try.
However Sequential has just as many problems as Behringer. Has Korg ever made a dud? Has Roland ever made a dud? Has Yamaha ever made a dud? The answer is yes unfortunately early on in those companies histories their mistakes and correcting those mistakes by understanding what people want as a musician fundamentally and then be able to create with innovation on top of that… That’s how those companies grew into being amazing and what they are today. :-) Thank you

I would have included the Poly D instead. It has more of the look & feel of the Moog, and due to its paraphony it‘s even more value for money IMHO.

i've played the deep mind and the ms101 (ms1 now) and they sound great. None of the demos in this video sounded good. I think you're losing something in the audio recording process.

Older video, it says 1 year old, but could be almost 2 years. I am guessing the 2600 wasn't out at the time. It would be a lay down mazaire. An original ARP can cost 10k+, the korg repo is 5k+, it is one of the most iconic analog synths of all time, is fun and easy to use - well easy to start using. It will make sounds that all ot the shown synths can only dream of. So to reiterate, I believe it must not have been out at the time of this video. Would it have made the list?

As much as I swore off Behringer years ago I think that it’s kind of cool that they’ve created these as a way to add some access to analogue classics at budget prices. I could see them having a place in the studio, although I know enough to not depend on Behringer gear in any live situation-been burned there way too many times. They may have addressed “quality control issues” as you fumbled through at the beginning of the video, but low price point is still achieved through cheap builds which equals lack of robustness.
I think their synths are different, I haven't heard many stories of them being unreliable. They seem solid.
@@Renzsu The old Behringer gear was cheap but also cheaply produced. I have the Pro-1 and Model-D and they are indeed very solid and well-built. I appreciate the democratization of sounds that were out of reach for most musicians.

No way is the neutron difficult to use. If you are scared of patching you can cover the patch bay with duct-tape and use it as a "normal" analog synth. All the modules are hard-wired. It is essentially like the k2. Or does the graphic design confuse you? I'm interested to know what it is that makes you think that mere mortals are not ready for such things.
I agree with you about the tb03. That sequencer is a bitch to program! The Crave I'm not so sure i agree with you. Again, you dont need to use the patch bay to make sounds and the basics of the sequencer are pretty ...basic. It gets more ib-depth when you start adding ties, slides and accents but it's nothing like as esoteric as the 303. Also, you should mention that the crave is identical to the moog Mother 32, but with some added features. Even the sequencer is the same. But its like a third of the price.
So, yeah.
One last thing, PLEASE learn how to disable modulation sources! :)
Appreciate the feedback! I agree that they’re not difficult for someone who is not an beginner to get around the neutron. I think the behringer synths are new gateway synths for a lot of musicians whose primary instrument is something else. I made those comments with them in mind - not to say they couldn’t figure it out, just wouldn’t personally recommend them as first time synths. Also, yes, we left the modulations on a little too long on some of the demos lol.
Neutron is crazy flexible with the extensive patch bay. About 80% of the time I end up using it to sculpt my sounds. I might even consider of purchasing a second unit to polychain them to duophonic synth or 4 voice paraphonic
Having owned a Juno 106 and a Deepmind 12, I still have the 106. On paper it can do anything a 106 can and so much more, but hearing is believing and I found its tone harsh and brittle. I could see it as a good unit to use live so you don't risk damage to the real deal. But in the studio I don't think there's any real comparison. And I'm not a Behringer hater, I still have their Model D and love it.
Funny, I feel the opposite :) I had a 106 and it was nice, but to me the Deepmind sounds as good, maybe a bit different, but with way more potential
I had a Juno 106, sold it so I could buy a Deepmind 12.
I had a 106 and a 60. Both sold now after I got DM12.

The only ones arguing if clones sound as good as the originals are the people who play them. The majority, who listen and buy music don't care if it's made on a Roland 101 or a Behringer 101. As long as the melody makes you nod your head. There is a lot of snobbism in the music gear world.

Holy crap. This guy usually seems pretty legit, but the Pro-1 demo is the most painful thing I’ve ever watched on YT. By a lot. Either play a tune or don’t! Maybe hold a note and play with the knobs! Did he forget how totally-standard filters and oscillators work? It’s like he lost his mind and just jumped to a random knob in a different section every two seconds. I hope he’s OK. I think it might have been a stroke or aneurysm I just witnessed. Get well soon!

I never understood all the fuss about the Roland TR-808 drum machine, and the Behringer re-make of the Roland vocoder sounds like a church organ.
The 808 is an overimportant piece of equipment. It's basically one of the founding father of hip hop sound around in the 80's

I would like to add a request. Having played most of the originals, I can see where the Behringer modules can be used instead of the high priced originals, but PLEASE, lets hear some more useful demos...more demo of the instruments and a lot less talking. There are far toooo many vids on RUclips where the so called demonstrators are in love with hearing themselves talk rather than put out a useful demo.

The young team haven't got a clue about sound. They think it's all about knob twiddling. Either that or this a blatant act of commercial sabotage against Beringer. The Odyssey demo is quite literally the worst synth demo I have ever seen on RUclips

I love your videos however, sometimes you spend way too much time playing the same Synth with minor adjustments. I think you just get yourself into a zone. After 15 seconds we get it, time to move on.
