Ionfuckncare what’s confusing to me is if he thinks dent is Batman then how does he plan it so that dent and Rachel are kidnapped and so Batman has to choose between them?
Can we appreciate that this scene, like pretty much all of this movie, was done ENTIRELY with practical effects and minimal (if any) green screens? That played a big part in the sense of versimilitude that made the Nolan batman movies, especially this one, so highly regarded.
3:23 - 3:27 “hmmm.....” I actually do believe it when he told Batman he really thought he was Dent. That was a genuine gesture of surprise, even if he suspected the possibility Dent was lying.
Well, I did think he thought Dent was Batman for a little bit when he rescued Rachel, but not very seriously. I thought his "Hmmm..." was the fact that like most people he'd never seen a Batmobile rugby tackle a dump truck before.
as a sound designer this scene will forever be in my mind as such an amazing use of sound and music. One that I keep coming back to. The fact that there is no music until the bat cycle kicks in helps to build that tension and make you feel the heroic moment when batman kicks it up a gear. the sound editing for the foley and effects is like a dance and the rhythmic timing with the film edits is masterfully done that no music is needed. Most other movies would have action music playing over the scene drawing out the beautiful sound design and removing tension. Also as a native chicagoan I have to make my (unoriginal) joke: this is just another typical night on Lower Wacker in Chicago
As someone who knows extremely little about sound editing, the only times I really notice it are when it’s done horribly (looking at you, Transformers!) or when it’s done so well that I only realize why a scene is so memorable when I go back and analyze it.
02:53 you are a Police officer in a large city wearing tactical gear transporting a high priority suspect in a bullet proof truck , you most definitely did sign up for this
2:17 I absolutely love this shot Joker is the only face you really can see letting you know he’s the one controlling everything. He really is a cleric of Chaos.
1:08 the random burning firetruck is really eerie to me. It shows how much the Joker is just able to run rampant that there’s a flaming government vehicle blocking a road that’s supposed to be secured and it’s not even really questioned or explained how it got there.
0:59 This shot here gives me chills everytime, the music combined with this emptiness just gives me this eerie vibe like something is terribly wrong and you should seek refuge immediately. Being out on the road is like being in no man's land.
This and the Joker’s shotgun when he fires it and the sound of it is immediately muted and then fades away. Like you said, a ominous foreshadowing of what will happen to the escort. Great sound design.
Imagine how it would feel if The Joker was sitting next to you. Imagine him silently fiddling with a knife as he waits for a another crazy plan of his to unfold.
Only issues I have with these scene are how useless the helicopter was. For it to be up high, it should be looking ahead and guiding. The convoy should have known about the obstruction long before they were 100 yards away. Second, how convenient it was that the Joker's goons knew the exact road and altitude to catch the helicopter in the wires. The rest was perfect.
There could’ve been someone on the inside. A cop on the payroll. Either being paid off by the mob or the Joker, who at this point in the movie are benefactors. Who ensured the choppers were in the correct position as well as telling the Joker’s men where they would be.
T Remember the helicopter was guiding them but they had to exit to Lower 5th. The passenger said "we need to get up top, we need air support. When they exited the freeway, the chopper caught up to them. Joker was guiding them in thay direction. I agree that it was fly pretty low though...

You have now unlocked two new vehicles! The Bad Joke: A blue dump truck with high endurance, low maneuverability Laughter in Slaughter: Semi-truck with high endurance, low maneuverability
The fire truck on fire to block is such a cool underrated thing the joker did it suits his personality so perfect to do it like it's a joke and the slaughter is the best medicine eon the side of the trailer always made me laugh I didn't even notice it tho till like years later I love movies like that where you can still find something cool years after watching so many times
IMO he survived just like all the cops in the chase in Begins. I mean Joker gets out of a flipped semi completely unharmed only two minutes later in the film. If it’s not explicit I say we’re meant to suspend our disbelief and believe that Batman hasn’t killed anyone unless the story makes it clear.
I don't care to argue it but there is 0% chance that Mr. garbage man survived. He didn't see it coming so he could not have reacted in time and the cab looked like a crushed soda can. His head/neck or spine were most definitely critically injured and he prob died immediately. If he was short enough to survive that impact he wouldn't have been able to see over the wheel. Suspension of disbelief is not equal to denying evident truths. ^Facts^
Vita et Mortem those literally are not facts lmao. We don’t have any reason to believe the Garbage truck driver died. I’ve seen videos of worse real life accidents where everyone survived. This is fiction, you have no proof of anything (facts) you are choosing to believe something (chosen beliefs are not facts). Garbage truck cabs are tall, deep, and your head sits at the very back of them, with the height of the truck they likely could have seen the Batmobile. Again if we can believe that Joker survives a semi flipping on its cab, or all the cops in Begins survive the chase, then we can believe the Garbage truck driver survives just as easily. Why you choose not to is up to you, but the story never gives us any reason to believe they died and it gives us a lot of reasons to believe they didn’t, so have fun with your delusions
Vita et Mortem If this is real (ruclips.net/video/_2B79xkOa7I/видео.html) then how can you tell there’s 0% chance that the garbage truck driver survived? Answer, you can’t. The story gives us no reason to believe the driver died since it’s never addressed. It’s a scene that’s open to interpretation, sure, but the entire story revolves around Batman not killing. Batman has a reputation in Gotham of not killing with characters telling him “you’ve got rules, Joker’s got no rules”. If he were to kill someone it would be significant and the story would address it. Add to this that there’s clearly still room in the crushed cab for the driver to be alive and that we see people survive similarly horrific crashes in Begins, and Joker’s semi flip two minutes later and there’s zero evidence the driver died. You can choose to believe what you want, but the story doesn’t support it.
The rocket launcher the Joker used is a Norinco Type 69 RPG. One thing I learned about RPGs is that they are designed to pierce armor, not blow up cars. The armored truck Dent's in and the Batmobile are armored vehicles. An RPG can seriously damage armored vehicles, but it can't blow up cars.
Hans zimmer made a score specifically for this scene and in the end Nolan decided to keep it raw! 'like a dog chasing cars' best score of the album was not used in the entire trilogy my word!
When I watch this scene in the movie I didn't know something strange. It looks like normal car chase in any other movies. But when the cars is going down and start bumping I know something isn't normal, something different. And yes, this entire scene doesn't have any backsound music like usual car chase. No shit talk, no music, just focus on the car, the acting and enjoy the car action. That's why I love this scene sooo much. Best version of batman i think
The fact nolan most of the time uses practical effects and only uses cgi when he needs to but shoots in the way you can see it is really admiring they lift that truck up in air .
Almost exact aerial shot + music in the beginning as scene in HEAT. Around 1:08 in HEAT where Pacino’s crew is stalking from truck. I knew Nolan used HEAT as inspiration for Dark Knight but those two scenes are almost copy’s.
