    • @kronosecw
      @kronosecw 5 лет назад +3

      @@BenEller Most of these rips (from the guitar hero sessions) weren't ripped as guitar 1,2,3 etc.. just guitar. So when there was a solo they would throw the guitar track onto vocals, drums or whatever. You are still technically correct in your "modern era" version - but if you watch this song being played in 1985 or whatever, he's playing it the studio version. Seen here: ruclips.net/video/NoVavpbhBfM/видео.html

    • @Barwis10
      @Barwis10 5 лет назад +4

      kronosecw Yup. Metallica often changes the way they play riffs live. Recent live shows should serve mostly as a guidline for transcribing. To keep everything in check, they should always be used alongside studio recordings.

    • @kronosecw
      @kronosecw 5 лет назад +1

      @@Barwis10 It's an odd choice to change... Like I feel like some of the songs they're just feeling lazy (...well basically every song for lars now :drum roll:) but that counterpoint harmony was a nice touch. The hardest part of that whole thing he's doing is simply having to stretch and play A-12p7 E-8 and maintain that position to catch the e power chord BUT THE DUDE HAS HUGE HANDS. So either he forgot the riff, or got bored.

    Your the man. I was about to dispute the ending tag of the 16th note c sharp riff because I was sure it was a slide from F sharp to E also like the G to F sharp slide before it.I checked several live videos finally found you where right. Then I thought of listening to the original because they are known for playing things different live, and no slide. I remember the tab book from 86 that you mentioned wasn't completely horrible but man o man did they have the breakdown riff wrong!!! "Why am I dying" riff. I'm glad you pointed that out. I remember back in 98 seeing a live video of the debut of Disposable Heroes and noticing the exact way you taught. Look up Kirk Hammett riffs. Lol that tab book is behind him on the amp lmao. I hope he didn't use that to brush up. Battery is completely wrong on that please do a battery main riff video. I think sonsterr has it right. But when I try to play along with the song using songsterrs way it doesn't come out right

    • @murk4552
      @murk4552 5 лет назад +4

      You do realize he is melodically and harmonically complimenting Jame's riffs playing the higher register parts like in the intro, or that little fill he throws in the pre-Verse riff as a 2nd go around variation?
      Plus 30 seconds of that solo, is him getting James to harmonize with his huge chunk of it, that's not easy to do either. Also, it's not a lead guitarists job to just play every single thing the rhythm guitarist does, lmfao.

    I notice you You Tube players use similar equipment. You mind explaining some of the gadgets you’re using and how you guys record and upload. I’m a plug a play amp analogue guy. Thanks and great work. I always laugh when I hear you mention those brutal tab books we grew up with. You’d be so excited and then you’re like…..really?

    Hey Uncle Ben, what about that doodle Kirk does right before the "back to the front" part? It always sounded all over the place and with a weird harmony to me. Can you clarify?

    • @murk4552

      That's a B Phrygian type of lick, with some descending chromatics thrown in, giving a slight Bebop feel. He's foreshadowing James A/A#/B chromatic fifths that Ben covered for that section before the "back to the front" mention comes in.

    Ok, so first thanks. but on the last riff where it does the transition to back to front...after b-b-flat c- to b, I hear something like this: c to b to c to d flat to e flat. I think one can definitely hear the flat on the record version and I think it helps the transition shift from the other earlier times in the song. Sorry I messed up I meant say d to e flat

    Totally unrelated to this video, but I'm replaying Thumper right now. Between your love of music and horror and the vidja games I think you will really really REALLY like Thumper. I have thrown a ton of hours into it and S ranked it several times. I kinda stuck with it noticing it was helping my twitch and rhythm on guitar. You owe it to yourself to check it out.

    no shit shurlock but alot of us started using the old "wolf marshall" tabs but most of us had a good ear for music because we listened to metallica every single day and we played along with al of their songs and we learned to play it better than what the TABS showed us.at least i did.

    10:40 -- reminds me of the intro to Manowar's Battle Hymn (the song, from 1982) for some reason...
    *Ironic,* since both songs are about war, altho Manowar's version is glorifying it, whereas Metallica is criticizing it.
    Wonder if Hetfield intentionally included that nifty lick as a nod to Battle Hymns... :P

    At 5:20 "Play an open A [muted] - some people mistake this for an E note but it's another open A" - As it happens, the bassline does a High E at this point (which is of course consonant with the A, but that could explain the discrepancy in some people's minds).

I learned LONG AGO in the 90s to learn with my ears,because I seemed to have a decent knack for figuring stiff out.so much so people used to pay me to tab out songs or records for em.lol..i usually did it for free tho..felt guilty taking friends money for helping em learn songs..anyways,good shit.
