Do you need a rig for your iPhone? Do you need a rig for any smartphone? Well, in some cases the smallrig iPhone cage does make a lot of sense. It's small, light weight and has a ton of mounting options for lights, handles, mics and so on.

Good review. I had a Small Rig for my Iphone 12 Pro Max which I am now selling since I have the iPhone 13 Pro Max--they are slightly different in size. This was fun to use for theme park recording and the many hot shoe spots on it gave me space for light, microphone, or other stuff.
thanks a lot Susan
I used one for my 11 pro max and liked it so much that i kept my phone in the smallrig 24/7 for protection against bumps etc.. and it saved my phone more than once from being destroyed! Yes it makes the phone more bulky but rather safe than sorry. I have now upgraded to a 14 pro max but stil not seeing anything on smallrig’s website that indicates them keeping up with newer models.. A universal rig is just not the same, this specific model iphone rigs just makes it so much easier to keep your phone protected.
pretty sure they will soon release one :)
SmallRig already selling the rig for iPhone 14 Pro Max
They are now available for the 14. How did the cage work as a phone case?
Thanks and it’s neat that it fits Moment lenses (for me). My issue is I have the 13 mini so few to no options especially is I attach filters.
Thanks for sharing
I order the 13 Pro even the box says its for the 13 Pro but when I try to slide it down the cage it wont fit, has this happen to anyone in the past .?
Thank you
You're welcome
dang that looks beautiful
Great video and information, thank you! From the looks of it, it' doesn't look like it's designed for an iPhone 13 mini. What are your thoughts on that? Again, nice video, and thanks once againl
You need to check if they have one for the mini as well - thanks fot the kind words!
Is there a way to mount Sandmarc ND filters directly onto the Smallrig cage or do I need a Sandmarc lens as well?
the clip on filter won't work well with this cage - so a lens is probably the way to go
@@smartphonefilmmakingpro all good! Realized there’s a Sandmarc filter adapter that I can use with Smallrig’s 17mm backplane to mount the filter directly without a lens!
Thank you excellent video
Glad you liked it!
Picked this up recently but there's so much mic hiss/white noise and lowers my voice. Any way to fix this for live streaming? I have a Galaxy S20
connect an external mic.. will make the sound much better anyway
thanks for the great video
Glad you enjoyed it
only cost 39$ so its not much more or less than a phone case. I use my as a case and a cage
Would you use this as an everyday case as well or take it off and replace with standard case when not in production?
no - definitely not
@@smartphonefilmmakingpro I just bought it so we shall see haha
@@cameronwarrenmusic so what do you think after you bought and using it yourself, do you use it for everyday case? I'm having the same question myself before I buy it
@@anangfahmi437 hey so I used the case for a while as a regular phone case. Here is my take: I like it design wise and is much slimmer than my otter box but it is wider in my hand. Using the 13 pro max with a case that is wider than an otterbox wasnt the best for me to one hand text so was always using two hands (probably good to prevent drops too 😂) I added a tempered glass back protector from amazon to the phone to protect from scratches since the back was exposed and had no issues getting case on still. Data connection and all seemed to work well still but didn’t do any extensive tests. The only thing that made me not use it regularly was that the metal was slippery. I am thinking about adding some type of clear material to add grip to it but until then, I’ve gone back to my other case.
I’d still recommend getting the case though because the attachments alone are great even if shooting Timelapse or BTS of work. Hope this helps
I used it for everyday use for years now (11 pro max case with threaded lens fitting) and i was very happy… now upgraded to 14 pro max… waiting for smallrig…
i am looking for a backplate 17mm for my iphone 12 pro, is there..?
I don't know, search on their website, pretty sure they have one
Is there a link to that cage?
sorry, here you go: amzn.to/3KVs3Ly
It does work with the ZHYUN smooth 5
theoretically yes - but I would not recommend to get this for the smooth 5
iPhone 13 Pro + Small Rig Cage + Ulanzi Anamorphic Lens total weight is 10% more than the Zhiyun Smooth 5 specifications allow for, but it does work. I wouldn't recommend it, but I already has the Smooth 5.
Sir, I am considering also daily use the SmallRig iPhone cage. Will the rig affect iPhone’s cell signal or Wi-Fi receiving? Is the rig still durable after a year? Thank you. I like your channel.👍
I don‘t think it does, but it makes the phone massive, would not recommend for daily usage
@@smartphonefilmmakingpro Thank you for your swift help!! Highly appreciate!! Very good point about the “massive!” Thank you!! By the way, if we do not daily use the rig, that means we will put our iPhone in and out of the rig frequently. Doesn’t that frequent installing and uninstalling the iPhone into the rig make it easier to scratch the iPhone? Again, I appreciate your professional insight.👍
I noticed it may drop maybe one bar of reception sometimes... Testing it against a friend also with an iPhone 13 vs my iPhone 12 Pro. So maybe a tiny bit, given its made of metal and metal does not transmit radio signals.
@@orestes1984 thank you for your helpful reply!🙏
It’s a shame there is no demonstration footage of the stability when handholding this rig with handles.
Thanks for letting me know, will add that in the future. It‘s just a bit more organic than handheld
Given it gives you more to grip you can hold your hands a bit looser. It won't replace a gimbal but I noticed that I can change my in camera stabilisation from extreme to cinematic in a lot of cases. There is definitely some added stabilisation but not as much as using gimbals.
does it have a strap holes ??
What‘s a strap hole?
@@smartphonefilmmakingpro I think he means like a wrist strap. Some cages have, on one of the bottom corners, a place to use a wrist strap.
I wanna buy it for 14 pro Max where can I buy it a whole set
probably on amazon - a video about the 14 cage will come soon
Great Video.. just joined.. .your Fan..
super happy to have you!
Is the case suitable for the moment lenses?
yes, you can actually switch out the lens mount
To be 100% honest the actual design is great from a concept. But their quality control and testing are below par. I have owned 3 of these and they all have the same issues. If you use the side handles as well as the top handle it distorts. Originally I had issues with the cage door would click while walking. I tried to add some rubber o ring and washers to make sure the screws wouldn't come in contact with the phone. A for effort D for nice try.
