I am uploading Part #10 of the Pac-Man restore now. Yep! Part #10. This is a cool vid, I think you'll like it. The video will be up later tonight or early tomorrow and here: ruclips.net/video/4QAZp3v2gSk/видео.html I hope you like it! :)
There's an IC (chip) located directly under the high score mod board, nearest the white wire lead. It's unseated. I saw it, when you did the edge on view. I really enjoyed this series. Learned an incredible amount of stuff. Thanks, and again, congrats on the restoration.
Nice one, really enjoying these. Love hearing Track & field / Pole position attract modes in the background. that really is the 80's arcade sound for me.
Hearing the fanfare followed by "Prepare to qualify" is something I still remember strongly after all these years. But hearing the attract, my wife always says "You watching John again?" lolz.
Your Possibly My Favorite Channel On RUclips John! THESE VIDS ARE SO...SO...AWESOME! Your Videos Make Me Curious About What Will Happen In Them & There So Entertaining, These Tech Videos & Reviews Are Beyond AWESOME!
If you wanna be a good pacman player the pattern is not easy and if you are very good try the special level level 246 or was it 256? I can't remember but you will also find the secret about the ghosts in the intermissions aka big blinky chasing pac man then bigger pac man chasing blinky
I think the problem with using a flat screwdriver is you could bend the legs of the chips. The legs tend to be fragile and if you aren't careful you could loose a leg pin. I haven't used E-proms per say, but I have bent legs on other pics like a programmable PIC18F25J10. That's what sold me on a pic puller. I don't know how sturdy the Eprom pins are but I know the PIC18F25J10 are fairly fragile.
Another great vid! Can't wait for the back door project, just another reason for me to want to skip winter and go straight ahead to spring :D And actually, you can't die in a perfect score Pac-Man game until the 256th board, because the glitched half of the screen has some dots in it that regenerate when you die, meaning you'll finish with a slightly lower score if you don't reach the killscreen with the maximum number of lives and collect those dots on each life. That's also the reason why Twin Galaxies settings use 5 lives instead of the default 3.
I just installed the high score save kit into my Ms Pacman upright, then I immediate got a bizarre error- I had a jumbled screen with ms pacman continuously flying diagonally across the screen. I took the ram chips back off of the daughter board I got with the kit, and put them back onto the Ms Pac PCB and she fired right up and worked perfectly... Any idea's on what the hell is wrong?
If this machine still has hum in the audio, it looks like C46 to C51 are in the audio circuit (could be wrong as my schematic is hard to read). C47 doesn't look suspicious to me as it is part of a low pass filter but if you worked backward from C51 to C46, test and replace as you go, I'm fairly positive that the hum would be gone by the time you got to C46. C49 to C51 are most likely the culprit but it could also be the driving circuit feeding the amp, which looks like a 4066 controlled by a 74LS273.
You mean on the Tempest? I actually the took the board out and reseated the bit slicers and all the connectors and once again reflowed all the header pins. It has been great since. I had it on for about 14 hours the other day for my party and it did great. I suspect it's a bit slicer socket.
You don't want to use a screw driver because you can scratch the sometimes very delicate solder mask, exposing the copper traces. You are also at risk of breaking off pins when you are prying from one side. I'm not saying you do it wrong. But inexperienced people will make the mistakes.
Yeah, I get it. :) I just have had no issues doing it this way. I'm not really prying from one side. I get the screwdriver all the way down to the other side when I pop it off. Most of these boards have taller sockets too so you aren't really near any traces that might exist on the parts side.
Nice work! I'm thinking i need a few classics, i'm kinda fighter-heavy, but the Neo-Geo helps. After watching the Gorf vid. I seen one near Seattle for 2 bills, needed work on the board stack too. I'm really looking for a Puzzle Fighter II for my CPS (wife's Christmas wish list).
Decided to get a Naomi system for Christmas. It's going to be a real temptation to get MvsC2 or SNK... We'll see. Its going in my Z-back w/ the VGA monitor, so it should look great. Any suggestions on a mini stereo amp? I could use a Naomi sound amp, or I was thinking of using a cheap Chinese amp off ebay, like the Lepai 2020a+, it has decent power and reviews up to about 10watts easy vol/bass/treb controls... thoughts?
Awesome, Video John! I really need an eprom burner and eraser, because I would like to be able to switch out some of my Vs. Nintendo Games. I have this book called Mastering Pac-Man, and it's great if you want some good patterns! It's from the 80's too! :)
Yeah, I want to pick up one of those Pac books. I have some PDF versions of them. I had a hard time remembering those patterns the last time I played. I need to try again! And, yeah... an eprom burner is a must if you have a Vs. system!
I have 3 Pac-Man books, including the one you mention. I think 'How to win at Pac-Man' (Penguin Books) is the best. It's only 32 pages and has 3 basic patterns that can be used to take you all the way through the game - just leaves the power pill areas for freehand play.
@John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech Hey John! What Was The Game That I Kept Hearing In The Background Saying On Your Mark.....Get Set......? Was That Track & Field?
John, you must revisit this game and install the 4 in 1 mod that is also listed on Souzilla's website. I want to do this to one of my two Pac games so I can get rid of the other. I only see pics and a few videos of it running, but no "How To". I'm sure I could do it on my own, but I would like for you to do all the guess work, lol.
Have you thought about getting a Pac-Man Plus PCB and daughter board to connect it to your existing Pac-Man PCB? It may not be the best Pac-Man game, but it's still a classic, and has a bit of 'humor' in it.
Hey John I have been watching your videos and soon ill be buying my first arcade machine! its going to be either gauntlet 2 or Marvel vs Capcom. ANYWAYS i was wondering if you could maybe make a Facebook group so people could talk more efficiently about repairing and socialize more.
Ugh, I broke the pin/leg on the ms pacman chip at 4k. Is this something I can buy from radio shack or does it have to be pulled from a dedicated ms pacman pcb?
I can relate to that. I just went through a binge session of watching every part of the pac-man restoration and here I am asking for more! Also just a little tip on installing full size side art on a machine. I try to keep about 1/4 to 3/8 of decal all around the edge so I can fold it under the t-molding area. This prevent having to trim the decal and provide a seamless finish at the border.
Just sat through the whole video. Always interesting though why do they make those legs so long on the daughter boards? Clearance or so you can better see how your lining it up?
I never had any issues with the Chinese one. The only reason I replaced it was because my friend Adam gave me the one I have. But, yeah… doing more at a time would be awesome. 30!!??!
Yeah, my chinese one worked. But it didn't do the greatest job, sometimes eprom on the edges wouldn't erase. My big one erases the whole tray in 10 minutes. John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech
Oh, yeah. I need to put my little tree up and hang the garland. I have the Christmas lights up. I actually never took them down from last year. D'oh! :)

That was awesome John, good job. Dude the cabinet looks great!
Thanks, pal!

commandtheline I get to wear my Bose Quiet-Comfort
headphones and don't hear thoses comments anymore :-D
Great series John, almost like being sat in the garage with you for most of it, which is great film making considering I'm thousands of miles away..!
Thanks a lot! Glad you enjoyed it, it means much! CHEERS!
Excellent work glad to see it all finished and that free play attract mode/ high score save is sweet
Thanks! Yeah, the mod shown in this video is a must in my opinion!
followed your video and installed the same kit into my ms pac cocktail. thanks for these videos and look forward to more!
I am glad you do this John for when I get some other arcade cabs I will know what to do if something is wrong.
Looking forward to the final lol installed mate. Really enjoyed the series
It might be a while. I'm not working in that freezing garage right now! :D
03:30 nice donkey kong wallpaper monitors looks really nice
Thanks! :) I was proud of that dual screen DK wallpaper I made. Glad you noticed.
John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech Yeah.. that is a really cool wallpaper - At first, I thought you had MAME running across both monitors.. :-)
3:30 you're welcome.
3:29 That's a cool desktop wallpaper :)
Thanks! :)

Wow! Thank you for so such an awesome compliment! I really appreciate it!
The cab looks great! I wish it was easier to get hold of cabaret arcade machines over here in the UK.

Another great vid, John. Watching the attract mode, I can see you have it set to the harder game setting. :)
Yes, you are right! I discovered this recently and fixed it!
That's one beautiful cabaret John. You've done an excellent job with it. My hat's off to you buddy ;)
Thank you, sir!
Yes sir. You're quite welcome ;)

Thanks for the info! I don't think I'll ever have to worry about getting a perfect game. I suck! :)
Only thing I would do different is save the data from the original EPROMs to files before erasing them. Good to have the original data.
Thanks John! I just installed mine a few minutes ago! 48k first go around. Saved!
nice!!

Good to know, thanks for the link. I'll be here when its done. : D
That cabaret looks great! Nice restore. Did you ever get another PCB for your Ms Pac cab? or is it forever MAME?
Anybody else having mini panic attacks watching him put the boards back on? Hahaha.
Yo John vid 10 omg what
A beast I like you John

try cleaning the pins first with some fine grit paper to get rid of any dust or adhesions on the pin surface.

Yeah, if you only have fighters, it'd be nice to add some classics. Donkey Kong, Pac-Man, etc.

The Timeless Art of Seduction...

Doug Thompson I actually have a Pac-Plus PCB and marquee. I might swap out it out soon.
Great episode as usual John - will we have part 11 "oh crap I forgot something else?"
Part 11 might not be here for awhile. :) It's cold!
How do you tell Pac Man versions apart? I've heard updates were made to the game over the years.
Hey John I have been watching your videos and soon ill be buying my first arcade machine! its going to be either gauntlet 2 or Marvel vs Capcom. ANYWAYS i was wondering if you could maybe make a Facebook group so people could talk more efficiently about repairing and socialize more.
What would happen if you burned the EPROMs for like 60 minutes?
42:05 that background music tho
Back door video? I have watched all of these Pacman videos in the past three days.
Another great vid
Ugh, I broke the pin/leg on the ms pacman chip at 4k. Is this something I can buy from radio shack or does it have to be pulled from a dedicated ms pacman pcb?
John I see that you have the Mac Mini, do you know a simple way to get Mame running with mac os x ? I have no problem running it in windows 7 though
I used to use Mac Mame. It worked fine for me.
John.
In this game have a test mode?
Do you have a vid of the budweiser cab?
Yes, I do. An old one: Tapper Arcade Game Video Review - MCR High-Score Save Battery
Get the classic asteroids arcade machine PLEASE!!
Question, do all high score save kits with initials require me to write new files to EPROMs? I don’t have a burner
There are many high score kits out there that include everything you need to make them work. check highscoresaves dot com
Did you get to build a back door for it after all?
Arcade Moi Ça You know, I never did. :)
I can relate to that. I just went through a binge session of watching every part of the pac-man restoration and here I am asking for more! Its working for me just got the email. yes i have you as a email subscription XD
Just sat through the whole video. Always interesting though why do they make those legs so long on the daughter boards? Clearance or so you can better see how your lining it up?
admiralshadaw Yeah, those legs are LONG!
My PACMAN scores are that shit, I doubt I'll bother going for a hi score mod! That will just kick me in the nuts every time I power up!!! :D
You know that chips always are numbered the same way right?
Yeah, the text is facing the same way. I usually just look for the notches. :)
Do you watch Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures?
hey john did u fin the backdoor to Pac-Man?
No. I never did. :)
ok cool love your vids keep up the great work..
The mainboard looks like just another Pacman map
Does someone know how to save highscores for pacman in MAME?
Most games I have in MAME save just fine, but some like pacman & rolling thunder don't.
you need the hiscore.dat
I see you bought a real eraser. I got sick of my crappy chinese one not working well too. My new Spectroline can do 30 eproms at a time.
I like the ns-10's.
You mean my monitors? :) They are Yamaha HS80Ms. :)
Ah.....they look kinda like the old ns-10's.
Do you still have pacman
no he traded it for crazy kong
why not?
Can we see the ms pacman mame cab?
Yeah, I have shown it before. Maybe check out Video #100? I'l be doing a year end review soon. I'll show it then too.
Thanks :D
You should let Smitdogg from MAMEWorld dump this...I find it irritating that I have to re-do my scores every time I start the game.
hey do you like trains john?
I do like HO scale model trains. And, imitation crab meat.
i found that out first!!!!
the new eproms skip the screen test
knock knock?
Where's the Christmas decorations?
Oh, yeah. I need to put my little tree up and hang the garland. I have the Christmas lights up. I actually never took them down from last year. D'oh! :)
all that work just to put new Roms on the PCB, Good video though. :)
hey john is it ok if i come to your house?
Ha! :) No.
:(
The original Pac-Man design was soooo creepy looking!
WHAT!!!
I DON'T KNOW!
hello?
no i ment the motorized on & off swich ones
