"Awaken, My Love!" is the third studio album by American recording artist Donald Glover, under his stage name Childish Gambino. It was released by Glassnote Records on December 2, 2016. Consisting of tracks being sung rather than rapped, its fusion of psychedelic soul, funk and R&B influences was considered a bold departure from the predominantly hip hop style of his prior work. The album was produced by Glover and his longtime collaborator, Ludwig Göransson.
"Awaken, My Love!" received generally positive reviews from critics and debuted at number five on the US Billboard 200. The album was supported by three singles, "Me and Your Mama", "Redbone" and "Terrified". It received Grammy Award nominations for Album of the Year and Best Urban Contemporary Album at the 2018 Grammy Awards. The single "Redbone" also earned nominations for Record of the Year, Best R&B Song, and won the Grammy Award for Best Traditional R&B Performance.

This album is truly an ode to the work of Parliament-Funkadelic, especially Maggot Brain and Bootsy Collins. The interpolation of those “I’d Rather Be With You” drums on Redbone reminds you of the former song instantly. This album changed everything for me as someone that was 18 when this album came out. Glover and co. created a gateway to the classic Funk and Soul of the 70’s, and it became my favorite reference point for music. That’s why I’m glad that other artists have followed suit with the help of producers like D’Mile (Lucky Daye, Victoria Monét, Silk Sonic). R&B/Soul got its groove back in the last few years, and I’m so happy about it!

Which was just what I needed. Awaken, My Love lives in my head and to this day I still believe it is the most complete album to date. Being a fan of Childish Gambino since his Culdesac days, that song and sound was such a shock, but it was also the moment when I realized Donald ascended from just being a hip hop rapper into a full fledged versatile artist where genre became irrelevant to him. I stumbled upon this video in my recommended, and let me tell you it did not disappoint. The attention to detail and appreciation you take for music is incredible.
In accounts to “Awaken my Love”.
I wouldn’t know how to describe the first time I listened to “Redbone”
I recall being younger and feeling many emotions, and I truly mean that. I had yet to feel mesmerized and left in shock by any song. From that day forward I would listen to Gambino’s music in true appreciation and respect.
Childish Gambino, his voice, range, and ultimately way of singing takes you to a whole other world. Baby boy is one of my favourite songs in this album.
The way the songs switches and shifts you through diverse ranges.
Childish Gambino’s vocals, don’t make it any easier; The way his voice holds so much diversity and power is truly indescribable.
The storyline in itself is incredible, but when combined with his vocals, the shift in the song and more…it truly creates a masterpiece. From start to finish…I feel it all.
All emotions portrayed, to say I appreciate Childish Gambino would be minimal.
He is truly a astonishing artist.

Every couple of years we get that one song that has only been out for a month, but it sounds like we've had it our entire lives. Like when we first hear it, it screams nostalgia, yet we've never heard it before. Redbone is one of those songs where even on first listen, I felt like I recognized it. It's just beautiful. The whole album is amazing, but that song, man. I know it's extremely popular, but it's fantastic

I remember going to see Gambino perform this for the first time in Joshua Tree at his Pharos event. Went in with no context of what to expect and then walked into an insane performance. The music, the atmosphere and the visuals projected on the indoor dome was unbelievable. The show/album ended and the whole crowd was in shock. Nobody expected this vibe. Walked with my sister and friend through the desert at night to talk and process the album. One of my all time musical memories

I remember hearing this album when it first came out when I was 16 or 17 years old and must of only made it through 4 or 5 tracks before I stopped listening to it because I thought the vocals sounded absolutely horrible. After listening to it again recently I've come to see the brilliance of this album, not only with Donald Glovers vocals, but the incredible instrumentation flooded through it, it's now almost been a gateway album for me to explore this genre of music. Crazy how a few years can drastically change the type of music you find yourself enjoying 😂

And it made me so happy to hear him talk about how it sounded straight out of the 70’s. But then him seeing how also innovative it is in the middle and towards the end.
This channel is amazing because 1) it has amazing taste. And 2) it lets me get as close as I can to listening to an immaculate album for the first time again.
