Tom, I can't thank you enough for this series.. I am a new ham with learning difficulties from print and your series has helped me enjoy this radio so much more. 73, KJ7MMX
I'm new to ham and have this transceiver. I take my tec and general test 9/25/2023. This is a really good video and you explain things very well! Thank you!
Thank you for posting this video and the one specific to CW. I really appreciate them. I have owned my FT-881 since early 2019, and have played with it a little, but not as much as I wanted to. Now, I have more time so I am really trying to learn how to get the most out of this fine radio. Being a primarily CW guy, this is important. I'll check out your video on the SSB stuff as well. 73 DE KC9EHQ
It’s a nice starter rig. You may want to invest in the matching antenna tuner, or see if LDG has one. I just like the look of the Yaesu tuner. Also, consider an external sound card so you can play with some of the popular digital modes. I use the signalink usb, but if you’re on a budget look at the digirig. Lots of videos on using either one with the 891. Good luck on your test
@@ND3N Thanks! Yes, I bought a Mat-Y200 as it is small and built for the Yaesu line. I'm drinking form a fire hose right now, but it's a lot of fun! I am researching digital modes now as well.
Thanks, Tom. I used your videos to configure my FT-991A and it works great. So, I'm looking forward to using your videos to configure my FT-891. 73, Stu. K8STU
Tom, thanks for the education. My FT-891 had the LCUT and HCUT slopes for SSB mode defaulting to 6dB/oct as displayed in your video, but you stated the default was 18dB... You said go with the default... So I am assuming you meant 6dB. But this is great, You are a fine Elmer, Sir!
Hello Tom, I am currently studying for my amateur license. I would like to set the 891 as a base station. What else would I need to use a Heil PR 781? Please advise. Thank you Marc
You’ll need the modular adapter available at heilhamradio and either the hand held Push to talk or the footswitch. You may also want an antenna tuner. The rig comes with a microphone, so you might be able skip the headset.
Sir, I am new to the 891. It us my rig of choice for portable ops. Base rigs are IC 7300 and 9700. I am curious as to your thoughts on a pan adapter type setup on for the 891. 73, AI5CA, Bob
You would have to open the case and find someplace to tap the IF signal. I don’t know where that would be and I would be hesitant to do it to my rig. Your mileage may vary… hihi
Hi, good evening I recently bought this radio, and I wanted to ask you if I may I have an external speaker connected to it, and when I lower the volume just to listen very low The radio will mute the sound completely unless I raise the volume significantly Is that normal? It kind of feels like an automatic squelch, but it doesn’t have any
Yes, you can…. Use the external speaker jack on the back of the rig. If you’re using a headset, that plugs in to the side of the front panel, on the side where you route your microphone.

The best 891 tutorials!
Wow! Thank you for very in-depth of FT-891 functions.
Very welcome!
TS-891? Just kiddin'. Good series, keep it up.
Good catch - I fixed it... hi hi . . . BTW - I've owned more Kenwoods than I can count, so it was an easy slip to make.
Thank you very much for this good and valuable video. So appreciated. Next week my new ft 891 will be my hands. 😊
Glad it was helpful!

But there is NO 1Khz Step for the Multi Funktion Knob. Bad.
