  • In this quick video I show you how to switch between USB and LSB on the Yaesu FT-891 transceiver. You will have probably noticed the details given in the manual are somewhat false, but it really is easy to switch between the two via the function menu.

All Yaesu had to do was put a dedicated Mode button on the radio ... But No , They had to made it user Unfriendly , Making it much more difficult to operate ... What idiot at Yaesu thought this was a good idea .

Thank you!! But wow how silly - if you want to listen to utility stations on general coverage you have to select USB this way as SSb defaults to lsb. But then all the bands default to the manual setting and navigating those menus is not fun. Thanks tho for your helpful video

User manual vagueries aside, on a radio this compact, I guess you just can’t have a knob or a button for everything and the auto SSB setting caters for most SSB operation. I have one for mobile use and agree it’s a great radio for the £.

Same as mine, they all do. The radio is set to the default values for the bands, for example usually bands from 20m upwards use USB and below that it’s LSB that’s used. But it is a bit of a faff changing bands, would make more sense allowing a key press change in the menu rather than diving into pages of menus.

I've forgotten way too much over the years so please excuse my ignorance, but I assumed that you would always operate in USB and didn't realize it was dependent on the band. Is there a quick explanation for when either LSB or USB is appropriate? If it's not quick (I really don't want to inconvenience you too much) and you're aware of a website that explains this as well, I would sure appreciate the explanation or link! I've had my General for a few years now but haven't done anything with it, and am just now getting motivated to buy an FT-891 and play around with HF. Now I'm wondering if I should since I have this question for you 🙄🙂

anything below 10MHz is LSB and anything above is USB ie' 14.275.50MHz USB.. 4MHz above 10Mhz = USB. easy way above is upper and below is lower. It's relative but that's the way it supposed to be. Generally speaking it is but not chiseled in stone.
Just a general rule of thumb to keep it moving instead of grumbling among "I was here first" type hams. ✌Be sure to consult your ARRL(Available for download everywhere) current band plan and as always your mileage may vary. May the DX be with you

@@fubarsnafu4994 I sure appreciate you getting back to me, and I can remember that easy enough! I still don't know how everyone but me knows how to convert Meters to MHz so easily, but I guess that comes with time. I have the band plan printed up and on the wall staring at me, (I think I've heard it laughing at me in fact) and for some reason it's not sinking in....but I'll get there I'm sure! Thanks again!!

@@twobikesandadrone MHz to Meters.. google How to make a 20m diapole antenna. The formula you use to calculate length will explain that. Better if you see it for your self. Keep reading and stay active. Listen to the old heads and avoid opions. Don't fall into the money pit.
Listen if your not gonna key down. But remember that mic only works if you use it. Most of all enjoy.

@@fubarsnafu4994 I have unofficially chosen you as my RUclips Radio Mentor, not only because of your wise advice, but also because of that telling username!! 🤔😄 I'll especially try to stick to the money pit advice, by using wire vs verticals, but I'm going to splurge with a new FT-891, because I just can't help myself.....and because it's fairly small and rugged for doing POTA/SOTA stuff with the motorcycles.
It would be helpful however, if you would make some videos on your channel, but if not, please check my channel in a few months since I may do a playlist of ham radio stuff documenting a new guy getting into the hobby. I'm sure there will be plenty of opportunities for you to continue to mentor me 😄

I am new to hf and am wondering why you would want to use lsb on a frequency that is agreed upon that usb is to be used? Probably a silly question but there must be an advantageous reason for doing so. Could it be that you may copy the other station more clearly by utilizing the opposite mode?

Great question. No real reason for it’s use, but however on experience funnily enough, when having a qso amongst friends believe it or not on some occasions it’s been less noisy on LSB compared to USB.
But yes, no real reason to switch only I did have some questions regarding this switch over from freebanders etc.

If you use SSB digital modes like FT8, it will need to be on USB, even when on 40 & 80m. I know Data Upper or Data Lower solves that. However, I find a difference in the stations I hear when on SSB vs Data mode.

I personally just put the desired lsb or usb in quick memory save all the messing about with having to go into the menue to adjust it
