- A popular inshore fishing lure is the Berkley Gulp Swimming Mullet.
This is one of my favorite lures to throw at juvenile tarpon. It can also be used to target redfish, trout, snook and even black drum.
This lure has a tail similar to a bass worm tail, which gives it some very vibrant action in the water.
After thoroughly using the Gulp Swimming Mullet, I wanted to give you my honest review of this lure.
In this video, I give you my top pros and cons for the Gulp Swimming Mullet and show you how to rig and retrieve this lure.

Great video! By the way, that "softenting" of the lure is a straight revenue-boosting strategy. We're all buying more of these than we used to have to. Their scent formula is perfect, and that supports the deminished plastic quality. They'll push it as far as they can. At some point, a competitor will match their scent quality and take them out by the knees with a lower price point.
Has anybody done it yet that you kno of?
@@HunterbidenscrackrockI don’t think there is a gulp knockoff in the US. Maybe overseas. Closest thing to gulp is maxscent but that’s berkley again!
Great review. Tony, you're a natural. Always clear, concise, and informative.

Best saltwater lure I've EVER fished
I have been successful with using the Chartreuse Swimming Minnow under a popping cork as well. It has quite a bit of versatility.
Try wrapping dental floss onto head side upper third of the hook -jig, then coat floss with super glue and push plastic bait into place. The jig will hold longer and work better. Could also place plastic on upside down, so the tail will less likely catch on the hook.
Super helpful. headed surf fishing and i need to learn! thanks
When the tails are bitten off, you can replace with a small spoon threaded through the body and that really works the fish up. Also, you could rubberband the body around the jighead which will keep it on the hook itself.
Hector Tamales That’s the first thing I thought of as well.
I use these on popping corks, I mainly catch trout and snook but it definitely is one of my go to lures
I wish other baits would get bites like Gulp. Around the Chesapeake Bay area I often outfish the people using real bait with Gulp. I use Salt Strong or Z Man if the tail biters are bad,
The silver and the gold Gulp swimming mullet seem to be quite a bit tougher than the white or chartreuse and I catch plenty of fish on the silver. I caught 7 flounder on one last weekend.
Excellent video! Now all I've got to do is get away to put this information to use. LOL. Many thanks!
Glad it was helpful!
Too many people were complaining about the action of gulp baits,so I guess they made of softer so they had more action. I take the little pieces if a pin fish or something should bite off the tail I save a little pieces and put them back in the juice and tip jig heads with them, saves alot of money.
I have caught fish on just the nub of the bait after the tail was bitten off. Gives the lure a darting action and smaller profile like a small glass minnow.
Turn the bait so the tail is facing downward...that way it wont catch on the hook.
Yep, that was the first thing that caught my eye, too.
Thanks for sharing, very helpful, happy fishing
Great idea on the bait container.
That's my favorite lure for large and small mouth.
My Con is the tail gets bit off a lot from Pinners.
Keep the bodies and hook on an otter tail or fat cow jig strip. Problem solved.
us pork rind with the gulp, check out videos on our youtube channel ...
Thanks for the infomation man
Good tips! Thank you
Great video excellent review
Thanks Capt!
They work great in so cal harbors dropshotted for bass and halibut. FISH ON.
Flounder love them
Yes sir Flounder and Speckled trout.
You forgot to mention DO NOT leave any gulp on a jigg head lol they’ll dry out and can be a pain to remove.
Haha yes definitely a con! However, you can toss it into a container of gulp juice and let it soak and it will come back to normal.
Turns black and hook rots
I always have a pack of gulp mullet with me. when I'm getting hits, but they're not hitting hooks, I switch to these and it generally fixes my issue.
Thanks for sharing!
Ima try this on bass
What size do you guys generally use? I’m guessing 3-4 inch?
Yup - 3 inches all the way to 5 inches!
Some people use tail down. Some up. Crazy. Do a App on that. Thanks that will make a great App. LOL.😂😂
We've got the Smart Fishing Spots app in the App Store!
What hook size do you recommend for the 4 inch swimming mullet .?
Works good on flounder also
I've had a lot of luck with these
on flounder as well
What size jighead would tou use around the docks
Can you mix the mullet and shrimp juices together, is it the same formula or will that just screw it up? They seem to be a slightly different color fluids.
To me all that gulp juice smells the same,so yeah
Yep its not a problem. The older the juice is, the darker it will get. I have noticed the darker juice will give the white baits a sort of "off-white" or bone color, which I actually prefer over the bright pearl white.
I put procure in my gulp juice
👍
Can I the spray the liquid on other lures to attract fish
You can, however it will come off very quickly. The gulp baits are made to absorb the scented liquid and slowly disperse it over time. If you put it on other soft plastics, it will wash off after a few casts. I recommend pro-cure scented gel on other baits.
Tony, if I left the bait in the wallet on my boat would the summer heat break down the liquid?
With Gratitude,
Tom

Thanks!
I quit buying gulp after they changed formula to soften bait. Money grab that has already ruined there reputation with a lot of anglers will hurt there bottom line
