Gulp has really been a real game changer for me the last 8 yrs. I can be very mobile, cast further, able to fish in the surf or strong current without losing the bait. It's changed my entire style of fluking...for the better. Another eye opening video John, thank you!
Cool video John. I catch flounder over here in the UK, but mainly on ledgered bait. I think we brits - me anyway, tend to assume that flounder, and flatfish in general, tend to just lay on the bottom and chew on the occasional worm that might happen to drift by. I'd never have imagined they were so active and aggressive in their pursuit of food. I guess that's how they've survived to the present day. What a dope: I should have worked that one out really. Great to see it in action: seeing is believing. Many thanks. Raymondo
I couldn’t help but laugh at the 2nd clip where that other double jig set up is bouncing up and down and the flounders going nuts going for top jig then bottom jig 😂 then seeing another flounder cruise following your lure for so long before biting 😂
Awesome! In all of the years I've been fluke fishing I've never actually seen what was going on underwater. Just bought your summer flounder fluke book thanks
Yeah I fished for them on a charter today and they told us that if we didn't get a bite in 2-3 minutes to drop the line again or even move. Half the time we reeled it in we discovered that our bait was taken. We got quite a few bites as well as caught flounder.
You are right about the current muddying the waters. In the deep ocean there becomes layers of water like the top can be murky but when you swim 20 ft down then it can clear up and if you go deeper then there could be even another layer.
It's a good Sunday meeting with many great Surfcaster on L.I. Holiday Fishing Flea Market. Good to meet John Skinner, Zeno Hromin and Lou Caruso. Good talk and a lot new info to be ready for 2017 season. The John Skinner Seminary is fantastic. Off course I got the book too. Thanks for the photo. Congrats.
Have you ever fished inside the Raritan Bay? If so, what did you think? New Jersey and Staten Island have some interesting areas. April, May and early June for Stripers. June through August for Fluke. I like it plenty enough but I have had some really slow days in there. When the Water temps get over 65 degrees, the fish seem to leave for deeper cooler waters, making the Raritan Bay quiet after June. Love to know what your experiences have been in that region.
I've accidentally tasted Gulp! juice. Forgot I had just rigged a jighead and went and put my finger in my mouth to pull a piece of debris off my tongue (wind was kicking that day). Gulp! juice is extremely salty and it also has other flavors on it. And it does NOT come off easily.
I'm moving to Victoria BC and I can fish for flounder on the breakwater there. I already have my my new rod and will work on the jig when I move. Love your videos.......thanks
Hi John, love watching the videos. You mentioned that one of the reasons why fluking becomes more challenging when the wind picks up is because the clarity of the water goes down. In your earlier videos you mentioned that when the drift is too fast you use a drift control sock. How much of a difference does the drift control sock make?
Sea robin make me mad because I was on a boat with family and I got hooked up and I thought it was a big flounder but it was a sea robin well sea robin fight pretty well so it wasn't that bad just at least I was fishing I love fishing
Need to get 5 inch gulp..bin using smaller ones...but its big bait big fish..got a nice 24 inch today on live bait I happen to snag..water was clear top of the tide
John I have a couple of questions..... I fish mostly tidal creeks here in NC, and typically shallower water that is seldom that clear. In the fluke behavior underwater video, I saw no structure. No bait. What is holding these concentration of fish in the area? Also, typically here, the more junk in the water, the better. If you aren't hanging up, you aren't catching fish. And while I catch the occasional sea Robin here, our "interference fish" tend to be oyster toads and inshore lizard fish.
There is definitely structure. The clamshells on the ground, the dips and rolls of the seafloor. There can be soft structure, or hard structure. Also, it may be that there is desirable bait in the area. There may be bunker or bloodworms or some such in that area that make things more productive. There may also be harder structure further out that the video does not show.
at the beginning of this season i found a tsunami airwave elite inshore rod for $80 it was rated 10-20lb and and 1/4-3/4oz. In the beginning i was just kayaking to areas and fishing from shore, now i have been fishing in the kayak itself. think its worth grabbing a tsunami classic for kayak jigging instead?
Sea Robins showed up in the Chesapeake Bay this year. They were babies though. I hope thats a sign that more flounders are on the way. Your population of flounder is way better size and numbers.
Man that was great ! Liked and subscribed. Looks like you have a lot more flounder there than we do here. I learned to tie my hooks with a bit of braided line to keep from loosing fish.
I assume that is a fluorocarbon leader? It stands out fairly well. Be cool to see the exact same video and conditions with a mono leader, just to see how much more visible it is under water..
Great video as always John! Thanks for posting! How deep were they here? Were you trolling or drifting? I think I hear a trolling motor but not sure. The reason I ask is I have a hard time getting my jig to ride along the bottom like in your video. Not touching the bottom but gliding over it. How do you know to set it at that depth without the camera? Also, you mentioned where you were fishing, can you give me GPS coordinates so that I can look at a topo map and see how the depth is there in relation to surrounding water depths? Just want to get an idea of how these flounder are staging. If you don't want to post them here can you send me a private message? I'm here in Texas and will not fish your spot...LOL Thanks in advance for answering...
Thanks! I see now why they were holding there at the bottom like that. It is a steep drop off near that buoy and that is what the flounder like to hold next to (drop offs). It makes it easier for me to see how they would feed in that area. Thanks again. I have learned a lot from your videos and books and am keeping good records now that I have a copy of your program Fisherslog! Now I have to make a trip to see you sometime and get your autograph on all your books. ;) Keep up the good work! By the way, that area there you fish looks outstanding for bank, boat or wade fishing! Almost looks better than Galveston here in Texas!! Tight lines!
So much has changed from the days of squid and spearing. Technique, gear and attitude. Much of which is attributed to you. At least, as the east end of the Island is concerned.
Love the videos John, but now I'm confused. I thought you said in previous videos that 1.5 mph was the "magic speed" or the "perfect speed" or something to that effect, yet here you said at 3:35-3:50 that once the drift speed gets to around 1.4 mph the water gets cloudy & the bite shuts down. Did I miss something? Thanks.
A good speed range is usually 0.5 to 1.5 for me, with my sweet spot being 1.0-1.2. The comment about having the fishing degrade around 1.5 that I mentioned in the video is for a particular spot that I fish. After watching the video I realize there's more silt on the bottom than I thought, and it stirs with the current. You don't notice it on the surface.
Omar Zavala I'm not him but i know what line he uses... he uses 15 lb braid as main line then 20 lb floro but if he is around structure he uses 25 lb florocarbon
Hey john, i am looking to get a baitcaster for fluke. It would be a freshwater reel, how do you keep yours so clean, and how do u make it so it doesnt get rusty?
John, are you aware of any behavioral differences between the different Flounder types? I live in SC and ours a little different (called southern versus summer).
Yep. Summer, Southern, Gulf. Up here we have what we call Winter Flounder too. To make it more confusing the summer flounder are called Fluke from around the middle of Jersey and north.
John, when u pulled the. Gulp, outta the flukes mouth, did it release it easily? It sure appeared that they did not let it go willingly Thank you for the great videos! I spent 2 days 60 miles offshore Jersey coast last Thurs night into Friday slamming the seabass Great fishing, 4.5 hr ride out and 7.5 ride back in... Crazy seas man!!
Takeaway from your findings? Bare hook with Gulp catches more fish faster; forget the jewelry. What size and pattern of hook? ... and we're good to go!
Exceptional video John ..It’s always nice to see what’s happening down below . You surely give us the impetus to get out there and wet a line 🐠🐟🐡..Thank you
Just shows you don't catch a few of the fish in an area you catch them all. Its why inshore fishermen think they can't hurt the stock of fish but they are wrong
Hey Steven thanks for the heads up but that still doesn't explain how they smell underwater. Are you saying they smell through their skin like catfish? How?
Walkwithtruth Ive seen a few videos on this topic but i think you would understand it much better if you just googled it or see some vids here on youtube
Unbelievable !!!!! I will never fish my jig same again. I learned more from this video than I have from fishing 20 years. Thank you so much.
Gulp has really been a real game changer for me the last 8 yrs. I can be very mobile, cast further, able to fish in the surf or strong current without losing the bait. It's changed my entire style of fluking...for the better. Another eye opening video John, thank you!
I always thought fluke were solely ambush preditors . I never thought about them actively persuing food. Great video .
"ambush predators"
Cool video John. I catch flounder over here in the UK, but mainly on ledgered bait. Often, I find many helpful videos on RUclips. Once in a while, a great video shows up and this is one of the great one.
These underwater cameras are awesome keep doing them:) i love them
I love these videos. Great to see how they move and react.
Amazing footage, John. Great educational video. I learned a lot. You are truly one of the best anglers on LI.
As usual, Awesome footage John!!
Lesson I've learned from these underwater videos - if you don't get a bite, move. These fish are wildly aggressive. Thanks John.
Yeah I fished for them on a charter today and they told us that if we didn't get a bite in 2-3 minutes to drop the line again or even move. Half the time we reeled it in we discovered that our bait was taken. We got quite a few bites as well as caught flounder.

It's flounder season here in Galveston Texas and this video is perfect! Thank you so much for this video and you got a new subscriber.
Congrats.
God these fish are so DUMB. And it makes me feel even dumber for struggling so hard to catch them
It’s not that they are dumb, it’s just from their sight, they can’t see well.
I just laughed so hard because I feel the same way!
Nah they're smarter than you think
They are much smarter than what you say
I'm with you on that one! Lol

Awesome video, John. thanks!
they sure like the smell and taste of the Gulp bait.
I'm going to catch a flounder this year...... that's my goal
I've learned a lot from John Skinner. Using the jigging technique, I've never caught this many fluke as I had over the summer.
Ian McVitty it's not hard. You'll kill em
I'm moving to Victoria BC and I can fish for flounder on the breakwater there. I already have my my new rod and will work on the jig when I move.
Love your videos.......thanks
I love this footage
Thanks for this..Great looks.
Hey John. Excellent video again mate! Make sure that if Berkley Gulp wanna use this video that they make it worth your while...
You should try a gulp and a regular plastic twistytail side-by-side and see if they hit both.
Sea robin make me mad because I was on a boat with family and I got hooked up and I thought it was a big flounder but it was a sea robin well sea robin fight pretty well so it wasn't that bad just at least I was fishing I love fishing
Awesome videos! I found you from 1Fish2Fish who highly recommended your videos. Great work!
That video helped me so much. Thank you for sharing. I am on Louisiana gulf coast.
they should be sending you 5 gallon buckets of gulps. you do more for the gulp name than they do! great video as always
More like 55 gallons... I still have to buy it.
John that is absurd!! Have you spoken to Gulp about your material and product?
Need to get 5 inch gulp..bin using smaller ones...but its big bait big fish..got a nice 24 inch today on live bait I happen to snag..water was clear top of the tide
Hi John Skinner, I was just curious do you think your techniques will also work on the west coast i.e. northern California?
yeah when I use the link seem to get more Sea Robin bout these watermelon ones or Penny gulp they like that
These videos are sweet. Gonna get a copy of the book
That's why the grub tail gulp swimming mullet are so deadly, they work themselves. Imho...

The Gulp Alive! bait is no joke. Wouldn't ever fish again without it.

In the beginning i was just kayaking to areas and fishing from shore, now i have been fishing in the kayak itself. think its worth grabbing a tsunami classic for kayak jigging instead?
were the sea robbins not present that day? Is that new gulp bait able to specifically attract only flounder? If so that would really help anglers
Need a winter video ! Dying to fluke
Thanks for posting this

That was 20# mono
see what happens when you assume...lol.
Great video! Thanks. I just bought 2 of your books for xmas presents.
Hay John great video very interesting thanks
Outstanding video!!
Excellent video!!! Fantastic insight!!!
I'm new to your Channel down here in Houston, Texas this was a great video.

Drift, 20 feet, around 1 knot. Look for buoy 7 in Long Island Sound. Chart 12354. It's no secret.
Thanks! I see now why they were holding there at the bottom like that. It is a steep drop off near that buoy and that is what the flounder like to hold next to (drop offs). Fishing them this way is so much more fun.
it would be great tob see a video of what camera to use and how to fix it to your line,
Real cool. What kind of camera to you have attached? A Go Pro on a bullet? Great job! Your the best!
Love the videos John, but now I'm confused. John a really wonderful video. Can you share your Gopro setup?
Someone in another vid said that bacon works really good. have anyone tried that? Put a piece of baconon a lure?
Yea I saw "Seamoneyfishing" try that at Jersey shore and caught a bunch of doormats
NatarisX yep, there you are. There's always that one asshole that has to bring up their political bs. Thanks for not disappointing.
my god, best halibut tutorial video ever. I really appreciate the effort on filming this and the commentary you produced. Keep up the great work
Rodney's Fishing Adventure
and
Not a halibut 2 different species but makes me think it probably would work for halibut.
When is the best time to catch this fish? Thanks for the advice.
Yesterday I caught a 28 incher but my line broke. I caught it on a peanut bunker.
Is this in the bay?
Jhon skinner I just whated to ask what gulp do you use the most if you fished under a brige.and what line test do you use too!
Omar Zavala I'm not him but i know what line he uses... he uses 15 lb braid as main line then 20 lb floro but if he is around structure he uses 25 lb florocarbon
videoclip very interesting and useful for people who like fishing. thank you....👍👍👍
Very helpful video. Thank you.
Hey john, i am looking to get a baitcaster for fluke. It would be a freshwater reel, how do you keep yours so clean, and how do u make it so it doesnt get rusty?
Shimano Calcutta 400
What an amazing Video, thank you so much for this info.
wonderful footage very helpful God bless You Sir!!

Crazy seas man!!
Yes - none were stuck by the hook. They could have spit the stuff anytime.
Please cual es la carnada por favor..gracias
How fast are you drifting. Do you ever have to increase or decrease your drift speed throughout the day. If so how do you go about this, or recommend.
Great video nice work! Very Useful Thank You
Hey John, any chance you'd do a a video detailing how you rig up your water wolf with the fluke candy jig?
Flounder are incredible
Takeaway from your findings? Bare hook with Gulp catches more fish faster; forget the jewelry. What size and pattern of hook? ... and we're good to go!
Great video. What kind of camera did you use?
Exceptional video John ..It’s always nice to see what’s happening down below . You surely give us the impetus to get out there and wet a line 🐠🐟🐡..Thank you
Ever consider having a fish with your fans day at some beach?
Glad I found your channel! Great informative information!
where do you fluke?
Nice John. Do you plan on getting or reviewing the new Dawia BG's?
great video!
Great stuff!
I like fishing vides your...👍👍👍
What kind of camera is that?
Is this purely current or are you trolling and if so, how fast are you going and at how many feet?
Just current, but if the current and wind make for a bad drift, I'll use a trolling motor to get a 0.7-1.2 mph drift speed.
should I say the color of different gulps
So awesome!!
are they the same fish as west coast of usa
I don't think so, but I've had several CA anglers tell me the technique I use works on Halibut.
Never seen that kind of gulp before what is that?
6-inch squido
Wow just realized when I went to reply you said it right at the beginning, thanks for the quick response though your videos are amazing.
great video
What camera do you use to film this ?
I was going to say “who is the jerk casting right where you’re fishing?” 😂
do you think color bucktail matter?
I do like to have something bright down, usually a gulp grub in green.
Just shows you don't catch a few of the fish in an area you catch them all. Its why inshore fishermen think they can't hurt the stock of fish but they are wrong
I had no idea fish could smell underwater. Great lesson and video.
Walkwithtruth Common sense my friend, fish have nostrils and certain fish like catfish can smell through their skin
Hey Steven thanks for the heads up but that still doesn't explain how they smell underwater. Are you saying they smell through their skin like catfish? How?
Walkwithtruth Ive seen a few videos on this topic but i think you would understand it much better if you just googled it or see some vids here on youtube
is it just me or is this better then watching Nat-ge-o-wild?
Excelent video
Fascinating
Nice! Thanks
You should be getting endorsements from gulp
