    Very interesting John... It always amazes me how "finicky" these fish can be at times... Whether it be the color of our lures, the type of bait, etc... From day to day and tide to tide... Nice to see pro angler John G. Halkias showing off his netting skills... LOL!

    John, I've seen that you''re a very "i want everyone to have a good time fishing" kind of person (at least that i see from the vids). i dislike when people make a potentially relaxing/past time into such a competition. love how you share the wealth and try to help people without being too brash. i think your constant net conflict between you guys is quite comical and my only selfish wish is that you produced more videos but i understand the work involved! learning a bunch .. keep that content coming!!

    J and H owes u. I just picked up the rod and reel and a bunch of glass minnows and John Skinner buck tails and of course a bunch of WHITE 4 inch gulp..... so I guess I have to call to see if they have this new color and put some gas in the car. Good sign of a experienced fisherman. The other guys are talking and socializing and you Putting fish in the box. My Late Father always told me you can talk and socialize after the trip. Nothing wrong with it but time is limited and you can’t catch them if your line is not on the bottom. I have never caught one on the couch.

    Hi john, in the past you put some emphasis on hook eye placement of spro and S&S minnow bucktails for rapid vertical jigging, the new s&s John skinner fluke bucktails don’t look like they hang level, is this because they are swing hook bucktails or is this done to help deal with scoping out during a less than perfect drift?

    • @brendanwoerner3352
      @brendanwoerner3352 4 года назад

    Red is the first color that goes in water. After 3 feet red looks black, this is because of light absorbtion by the water. So my question would be how well does a black gulp work? I would think that it would resemble an eel.

    Question. I noticed in a number of videos you guys net the fish different at times. Technically the rim should be bent up but I noticed a few times it was the opposite way. Maybe a talking point, IDK. I am not trying to bash you in any way, just was wondering if you noticed this or if there was a method to why. Keep up the good work. I have learned a lot from you guys

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  6 лет назад

      You will notice I always have the rim bent up, unless the fish was already near the surface and I didn't have time to flip it. I think this video shows me making a point to flip it that way and straighten the net before netting. I agree with you that the rim should be up.

  • @MichaelP0418
    @MichaelP0418 6 лет назад

    I have always stuck to something familiar back when I was using bait..... squid and spearing. For these high-low rigs that you have helped transition me into, I have found the Gulp Sand Eels to be killer on a teaser with a white Tsunami glass minnow skirt (Or some other white teaser), and either a white or nuclear chicken grub on the bottom. Last trip I was on this setup was magic
    I enjoyed the breakdown here. I think red colored bait in general is a killer for anything really. Would be interested to see whether you could replace the pork rind bait with this for striped bass, and have either the same, or better results

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  6 лет назад +1

      I saw the Gulp sand eels work well on a trip or two, but they seemed to catch too many small sea bass where we fish. Maybe those fish are just easier to hook on the smaller profile sand eel.

    • @MichaelP0418
      @MichaelP0418 6 лет назад

      It's hard to say..... I clearly don't get out as much as I would like, but every time I have fished with the sand eel gulp it has produced keeper fluke. Hard to shift away from something that works, as you mentioned :-)

    John, just curious about the bucktail. I've started to try your techniques and I'm wondering if the bucktails you use have any sort of keeper on them to help hold the soft plastics like a normal jighead would? I seem to lose a lot of my soft plastics from the bucktails because they don't seem to be made with the additional soft plastic tip in mind.

      The 6-inch Gulp grubs that we use do not come off these hooks. There was no need for a keeper. I've tried other Grubs (ZMan, PlugBait) and there's no issue with them sliding down.

    Hi John, before you set the hook, sometimes you pause jigging (but you know you are going to set because you bring your left hand to the rod), like you do at 11:40 in this video. Why do you do that? I thought you advocated setting the hook immediately once you feel weight on the line. Thanks!

      The hand goes over if I think I feel something. Many times it's a false alarm. The hits often feel subtle, especially at that depth.

      I watched it. I think I was getting tapped and making sure the fish had it before I set. I don't set on taps. I set on weight.

    Does this color work as good in the bays? The two videos you show with Gulp Salmon are in the ocean. Would you use this color on a jig with a new penny color shrimp in the back bays?

      I have not found this color to be as good in the bays. I like white glow and pink shine there.

    Hey John, how do you determine the weight of your leader? Heavier leader for the the 3+ oz bucktails? And I just ordered the new color to try in Virginia in 2 weeks. Thanks for the video!!!

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  6 лет назад

      25# is fine. I'm using 30# here because the bottom is so rough and the leader gets a lot of abrasion.

    john, question on your rods/tackle: How are you connecting your braid to your lures. I use braid to a flor/ leader ...I have been watching your shows and I really like your rig set/up...# foot leader with dropper and loop to jig.

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  6 лет назад

      I connect the braid to the leader through a barrel swivel. Palomar knot on the braid, clinch on the leader.
