holly shit. from our point of view it looks like your really hauling some serious ass on that road. Seems like one of the fastest cars youve taken through that road in a while
I second what this guy has said. This is the fasted car I think I have seen you drive down a canyon road so far. It looks like it's just effortlessly going and going from curve to curve with perfect momentum. I can't wait to have this car in a couple of months
+Flávio Coimbra American cars cost half of what European cars cost. In America an ordinary person can have a 5 liter V8. In Europe you are talking 100,000 dollars plus to own such a car. That is the difference.
Cost to fill the gas tank on a CTS-V in Germany €79.86 - $87.73 Cost to fill the gas tank on a CTS-v in Michigan €29.85 - $32.80 I think european gas tax has a lot to do with the fact that average Americans can afford bigger engines. As I write this comment (July 24th 2016) gas here in Michigan is $2.05 per gallon while the price of gas in Frankfurt is about $5.57 per gallon.
"Not being an American car fan" was so 15 years ago bro. Since then the 2006 Z06 held the record for fastest Nurburgring lap then 2008 ACR then 2009 ZR1 held the record while the 2009 CTS-V was the fastest sedan in the world. Then the 2016 ACR was as fast as the Porsche 918, Laferrari and P1. "Not an American car fan" because you drove a 1999 Buick? Get in this century, bro.
Love these 10 min reviews where you are actually driving on a cool road rather than some of the other glitzed up big production reviews. Thanks and hope you keep doing them
The ATS has the basics done right. Like Matt stated Cadillac just need to address the small details to make a top class car. And given GM's focus on Cadillac these past few years I say they are doing a good job so far.
GM's 8 speed keeps getting slack because in manual mode it is not as fast in shift speed as reviewers would like,. But here is the thing. Its perfectly fine in automatic mode were you have the car setup in track mode. The computer is so intuitive and always has the car in its perfect gear. You simply can not be involved in the automatic 8 SPEED. If you want driver involvement then buy the manual transmission.
That's what I was thinking too, if you buy the 8 speed AUTO is because you want an AUTO, If you are going to complain that your paddles aren't responsive than why didn't you get a Manual?.. Right?.
I have had the ats-v for about a month now and I love the car. Very fast. Handles amazing and the 8 speed auto is not so bad when you learn how to use it. When you are in manual mode you need to learn the correct times to downshift and it will respond very fast. The upshifts are fast when you are on the gas and hits hard. Very solid car and the acceleration is nasty. Very nice powerband. This has a big turbo type is high rpm pull that you don't get from other cars. Builds power the whole way up the rpm range. Tons of torque
No traffic clogging the road! Damn, it's been a while during one takes lol Loved the driving, with headphones, the engine noise is quite nice and makes you want to go out and drive yourself :)
Cadillac completed their mission with the ATS. They created a car that can compete neck and neck with the Germans at a lower price. None of them handle like the ATS. Like people have said the transmission is smart all by itself..if you want to drive it fast leave it in auto. Its only the first generation and will only get better.
+Mr318live Apparently they didn't complete shit... As they can't seem to sell them. hence, Mission was a failure and will continue to be so till they can make the public realize it's a good car for the money
Texarmageddon Dude chill the hell out. They haven't even been for sale that long. What imaginary report you been reading? Its a low volume model to start with, their more concerned with how escalades are selling.
Exactly. I have the 14 ATS 2.OT. It's an amazing car, the biggest drawback is the harsh transmission shudder. Cue on the other hand does it's job 90% of the time-its not the terrible system it has been made out to be.
The key to CUE is understanding its a capacitive touch system, the key word being touch and no more than that, be consistent and smooth and its great, jabbing and jerking around and yes it will frustrate you, mind you that is self imposed. I have not issues with CUE at all.
+thesmokingtire I was hoping for your standard out (shift with paddles) and back (let the auto shift) comparison. I've noticed that a lot of others have stated the trans downshifts better in auto than with the paddles. I don't know it you were pressed for time or if you noticed if it wasn't that different. I realize its stupid to offer paddles if they're basically useless just because the other guy offers paddle because if theirs works and your's doesn't you just look bad. I was also hoping for better cooling with more frontal area for flow through the radiator. Do you think it was undersized for fitment and cost because they gambled on it not being driven that hard by most?
+wobbly sauce I really hope that not the case though you're probably right. A stock car should be able to be driven at speed without severely cutting power. If it were modified and can't keep up with the heat then upgrading cooling would be understandable. If Cadi wants to do this and knows they can't handle the heat maybe do an over-boost function for short busts of extra power then back down to help keep the temps in check. Just my opinion but when your car gets known for going into limp mode on every test you dropped the ball somewhere.
It's a little better in auto, yeah, but I still would rather shift myself most of the time. I'm sure there are ways to keep that engine cooler but you probably have to get a real expensive series of coolers that GM didn't want to buy.
TheSmokingTire Sounds like they should have tried to work out a bulk deal for more efficient ones that could work in the Vette too since it sounds like it needs them as well. Work it into the performance package price even though I truly think if it has the V or Z06 badge it should come standard. Thanks for your input.
TheGjergj79 But i like his comment. The day people mistake a v6 for a v8 given it's sound is the day we all have hope for a better car future. Not everything is being lost :)
@TheSmokingTire Just curious why you complained about the 8 speed trans in this car but you said the CTS-V shifted perfectly, even though the CTS-V has the same 8L90 trans.
there is just something about it that doesn't look premium, most people will see it and never guess it's a 70k car. that automatic is such a joke considering GM bragged about it saying it's as good if not better then pdk.. Said no reviewer so far
+CYKBC V series Cadillacs have excellent (read: slow) depreciation. Go ahead, look up some gen 2 CTS-Vs on autotrader. They hold their value a lot better than M5s and E63s. And I'm guessing you've never seen one in person, there's nothing "rental" about it. Do your rentals normally have Recaros?
That rotational inertia in the coupling portion of the auto transmission, that is equivalent to the flywheel, is in the torque converter. The flexplate, which some may try to say is the equivalent of the flywheel weighs less than 5 pounds on most cars. Obviously, a 5 lb flywheel in a manual car would be stupid light. So lighter weight torque converter? Then again maybe the problem isn't the coupling portion. Maybe it's in the auto tranny itself. They are called slush boxes for a reason.
Really nice one take and an excellent and helpful review. Your getting good at these Matt. You should do them for a living . . . oh wait. The caddy seems fast and agile. If only it was available in New Zealand.
The torque converter equivalent of flywheel is called a flex plate. Not really a subject people go into when talking about automatics and having good throttle response, so it's common for most people to not know that term.
ATS and M3/M4 are both 4,64m long. Would you agree that your feeling of the size of a car comes more from the eagerness to turn in, the agility and perhaps the noise insulation of the cabin?
Ah I looked it up, the ATS-V Coupe is around 3cm and the Sedan is around 7cm narrower than the BMW's. Appreciate your quick answer. Lets hope together that the M2 comes with more power than the X4 M40i which it could share the engine with. Love your videos anyway;)
+ViB33 Car and Driver mag shows a width of a rounded 74 inches for the M4 to just over 71 inches for the ATS coupe. The interior space is noticeably smaller more than the 3" of width would seem though too.
Sedan is 71.5 and Coupe is 72.5. Got that from cadillac.de . So the numbers shouldn't keep anyone from buying one of these cars. But its the feel that seals the deal.
So a Koyorad, new plumbing, intercooler, downpipe and a nice race exhaust and I think it would be a winner. It looks fantastic! Maybe if you could lower it like a little over a half inch without sacrificing quality I would do that as well.
i was in the atsv and ctsv at laguna seca during a 45min-1 hour session driven by pro drivers for caddy customers.. cars held up very well , air temps were 80-85 degrees ... the ctsv was pretty insane around laguna and atsv very close in ride, speed and handling... also got to drive both vehicles and both very nice... ctsv should come in stick... i actually like the exhaust note in the atsv, sounds good up high in the rev range, i also like the power delivery... after many hot laps you can tell the cts has better brakes.. problem with the infotainment system(i hate that word infotainment btw) is when you touch the buttons you dont know that you actually did anything , the buttons are like fixed plastic and you cant feel them working , they dont click like a button should lol... you just press the thing and wonder if its actually a button... i dont know of any force induced engine that stays cool on the track without modification.. how hot was it in texas when the atsv was getting hot? i assume it was on the street and not the track based on what matt was saying
+RingerRacing The CUE system uses a haptic engine, so you do actually know when you've done something because the surface you're touching vibrates under your finger. Also the ATS-V that got hot was due to a preproduction part that failed, that part never made it into production, and no othre ATS-Vs or CTS-Vs have had any overheating issues.
I myself just recently picked up my second ATS originally had a 13 2 L turbo just picked up in April a 15 2 L turbo with the performance package fully loaded out the door for 42 1/2, I live in Northern California news yet to have any issues regarding heat or power loss probably going to wait till 2017 to look into the ATSV give it a couple years to work the kinks out
***** This is not a Z06. Only one person has said anything about an ATS-V overheating, and that was Matt, in this video, about one particular ATS-V that overheated during testing a couple months ago. GM has already told Matt that that particular ATS-V was running a pre-production part that failed which is why it overheated. That part was not used on any production cars, and none of them have overheated, despite being flogged around tracks all day by motoring journalists. The Z06 is a completely different shape and has much more difficult packaging challenges.
this isn't a ZO6? didn't even notice! not anyway my question was specifically posed to Matt. And yes, i actually have read about a couple of guys having heating problems with these. but i guess you know all
***** "hatssss not what i've read some people saying about this and the new ZO6" Clearly it had to be explained to you that this was not a Z06 since you lumped them in together. I haven't seen anything about anybody ever having an overheating issue in an ATS-V other than the aforementioned one that Matt explained. And that was not a production model. And you can be as sarcastic as you want, the information I gave you came directly from Matt, who got it from GM.
How does the mag ride feel? Pobst thought the Caddy felt slower around the track when it actually was just as quick. Maybe that suspension soaks up everything so well you lose the some sensation of speed? Sometimes good for the track is less fun for the street.
Good review. I've had mine for about 2 months now. The gearbox is peculiar as sometimes it wants to behave and have that snappiness of a DCT and other times, it's just downright slow. Hopefully this can all be resolved in tuning via software updates. In terms of overheating, I have to agree as well. According to my PDR, Water Temp: 221(max), Oil Temp: 266 (max), Trans Temp: 243(max). This was after a 1:59.7 running at Buttonwillow CW13. Temps that day were in the high 60's/low 70's. Completely stock. (Footage on my page) Hopefully, some better oil will drop it down a touch in the coming summer months.
@thesmokingtire The Folding rear seat is in the "Luxury Package" should be standard....its one of the handful of things that I cant stand about my 05 STi.
+David MuscleGuy "Limp mode" has nothing to do with engine induction but with electronics. Any car that uses a computer (ECU) to run engine parameters will go into limp mode if one of those parameters goes outside its boundaries enough for the engine's health to be at risk. In this case, it was engine/oil temperature. By detecting a temperature that is too high for the normal operation of the car, the ECU cuts down on fuel injection despite how much throttle you give it, or even decreases the ammount of engine rev by half or even more.
+David MuscleGuy I think I'm with you on that man, even at the drag strips most fi vehicles are not consistent at all like the n/a vehicles, unless they sit for like an hour or 2 to cool down
+TheSmokingTire. Ok, so in reality you have no factual data to suggest that this is not a good car to buy if you live somewhere that is hot? By the way, I was with Cadillac last month (August 2015) at COTA for a track event. It was 107* outside with track temps above 130*s. Not a single ATS-V or CTS-V over heated and the cars ran on the track from 9am-4pm. If you're going to make an outrageous claim like the one you did, perhaps you should use some data instead of opinions to back it up.
Cadillac has really stepped up their game with the ATS-V and CTS-V. Much respect to them. On track I would take an M3 and on road the C63. ATS-V is almost as good but not quite there. Maybe next generation.
+TheSmokingTire When is the 2017 ATS-V review coming? Maybe the transmission is flawless, the engine sounds like a purring tiger, and the interior is made of chinchilla furs.
+Barry Blackstone Yeah I feel like Matt is unreasonably harsh about CUE, I mean I'm not saying it's the best system at all, but it is really not that hard to use. There are also tricks I think a lot of people aren't aware of, like to change the volume quickly you can swipe left or right on the volume slider in the center console. The new Cadillacs are also getting a 4X bump in processing power which fixes the lag, which I think was one of the worst parts of CUE. There are also steering wheel controls for phone, voice commands, volume, track up/down, DIC settings etc which means you don't actually have to use the CUE interface itself for most of the things you want to do while you're actually driving. So I just can't see the justification for the hate it gets.
Picky picky... and now i believe we have philosophically have different opinions on what sounds tasty... this V6 sounds angry and tight +TheSmokingTire but I love the videos....keep 'em coming
Driving that fast and speaking coherently and with substance is a major talent. Props Farah.
Love the overall design of the ATS-V, Cadillac sure knows how to make a aggressive looking super seden.
I love how honest you are. Keep up the great videos Matt! Thanks for the consistent content.
+BD14Cameron
Yup, a lot of reviewers seem to be afraid of upsetting the auto industry. I'm pretty sure bad reviews can get you black balled.
+BD14Cameron Yea like Motor trend and other reviewers its so sad with the state of journalism :(
are you kidding me sounds great . why does everyone bash these cars. when the perform so great.

+Flávio Coimbra imo those head & tail lights ruin the car, would look sick if they would be little bit more germanish :D
+Flávio Coimbra
American cars cost half of what European cars cost. In America an ordinary person can have a 5 liter V8. In Europe you are talking 100,000 dollars plus to own such a car. That is the difference.
+Flávio Coimbra best part is that you don't have to pay for service (oil change, tire rotation, etc) for 4 year/ 50k miles.

Maybe cause people are expecting DCT like response? Not all paddle shifters suck...
You are a prophet.
+Texarmageddon why would they expect that when they know it's not a dct?
I test drove one last week and I have to say that your assessment is spot on!
Jesus this thing is fast. Also if you watch this high you're gonna flip out and think matt's gonna die like 10 times. lmao!
Lmao high right now
yuup
hahah im high asf rn looking for a sports sedan
I have had the ats-v for about a month now and I love the car. Very fast. Handles amazing and the 8 speed auto is not so bad when you learn how to use it. You were getting it with this ATS-V. Hauling the groceries dear I say. Awesome vid Matt
This is a very well rounded beast! Handles so well! Damn! I actually like the sound.
Oh my god that thing is fast. Props to Matt's driving ofcourse but he wouldn't go that fast if the car couldn't handle it.
No traffic clogging the road! Damn, it's been a while during one takes lol
Loved the driving, with headphones, the engine noise is quite nice and makes you want to go out and drive yourself :)
I'm just here doing research after just reserving a CT4-V Blackwing. I'm sure I watched this five years ago, but I needed a refresher.
Congrats on your reservation, GM racing tech is miles better than anything out of Germany.
Love the engine shot you added pre-drive. Somebody suggested that a while ago so it is good to see you listened! Great addition to the vid.
Did the pedal HONESTLY feel softer? Thats hard to believe after that little bit of canyon driving at 60%.
Don't get the CUE hate on all the reviews. Got my ATS yesterday, figured it out the same day. Love it.
One of your better reviews. keep it up. You're the man.
With a Trifecta Tune this thing comes alive. Boost to 500hp and the shifting is greatly improved.
Cadillac completed their mission with the ATS. They created a car that can compete neck and neck with the Germans at a lower price. None of them handle like the ATS. Like people have said the transmission is smart all by itself..if you want to drive it fast leave it in auto. Its only the first generation and will only get better.

Exactly! If you want to shift then get a Manual. Easy as that.
Except that now this is the same price and like he said it's not quite there yet

at 5:00 this place looks like heaven. Can't wait to move to SoCal and take my e90 M3 up here. I live in Florida and the roads are boring as hell.
Camera positions are awesome on this vid. Looks like a video game.
Matt needs to review one that has 600whp. Basic bolt ons and tune will get you there and it’s a beast of an animal to drive.
I’ve owned Cadillacs all with the Icue and I don’t understand why everyone hates it

That was an awesome run Matt! Lovin these one takes and suprised caddy is capable of such ninja-like turn ins!
since when do the rear seats fold down in any sedan?
They do in 90 percent of the cars we test
+Christian Devaney - huh? Since when don't they? Both my S4 and M5 had folding rear seats, I wouldn't buy a car without it.
+Christian Devaney The correct question would have been "since when do the rear seats NOT fold down in any sedan?"
Lol this guy's seem like 1 car in his life.
Holy hell that thing turns in good!
But if it works fine else where.. is it a localised issue.
Nice way start my morning for work, thanks for the upload!
I would take this over an M3/4 any day. I drove an M4 and it was good, but not M good.
+GT7786
I saw a review where the equivalent mercedes forgot the model rated higher than the M4, yikes.
Jeff K C63 is a hell of a car, no doubt about that.
I like the turbo kick in that car
Excellent One-Take.
I love the throaty sound, very nice for a turbocharged six cyl
Umm it's a v8 lol
V-6 twin turbo.
TheGjergj79 But i like his comment. The day people mistake a v6 for a v8 given it's sound is the day we all have hope for a better car future. Not everything is being lost :)

Which car u end up getting ?
@TheSmokingTire Just curious why you complained about the 8 speed trans in this car but you said the CTS-V shifted perfectly, even though the CTS-V has the same 8L90 trans.
I've seen this a few times before and after buying my car.
realistically with 10k down can i get this car?
yes with around 1k/month payments
It looks like a rolling felony to me.
Yup, The car breaks all kinds of speed limits and if I was a judge I would put the SOV (
@@OmarsTechWorld cringe shut the fuck up
🤣🤣🤣 . It also comes with the auto license suspension package
Can anyone answer this question...... do you think this car will be a classic some day

How do you still have a license?
Wow man, it looked like you were really rippin, i mean it looks like you were going faster in this car than other sports cars..

I dont mind a bad infotainment like cue as long as the sound system is great and it has bluetooth

So a Koyorad, new plumbing, intercooler, downpipe and a nice race exhaust and I think it would be a winner. It looks fantastic! Maybe if you could lower it like a little over a half inch without sacrificing quality I would do that as well.
Is this a rebadge/repanel of the Holden commodore SSV?
+MrAlexio27 No. The ATS-V, CTS-V, and the 2016 Camaro are on the Alpha platform, which none of the Australian cars were ever on.
i was in the atsv and ctsv at laguna seca during a 45min-1 hour session driven by pro drivers for caddy customers.. cars held up very well , air temps were 80-85 degrees ... the ctsv was pretty insane around laguna and atsv very close in ride, speed and handling... also got to drive both vehicles and both very nice... ctsv should come in stick... i actually like the exhaust note in the atsv, sounds good up high in the rev range, i also like the power delivery... after many hot laps you can tell the cts has better brakes.. problem with the infotainment system(i hate that word infotainment btw) is when you touch the buttons you dont know that you actually did anything , the buttons are like fixed plastic and you cant feel them working , they dont click like a button should lol... you just press the thing and wonder if its actually a button...
i dont know of any force induced engine that stays cool on the track without modification.. how hot was it in texas when the atsv was getting hot? i assume it was on the street and not the track based on what matt was saying
I don't know why all these reviewers hate CUE... I love it! these guys must not be tech savvy. The interior of BMW's look dated In comparison.
Great Vid Matt, keep it up! Tell us your thoughts on Volkswagen next vid plz! As a german im interest in the american opinion
That sounds like a fun topic Lol.
Was that a ranger at 2:20 telling you to slow down?
+TheJubala hahaha I saw that as well.
No it's some old dude in a safari outfit
Can ECU tuning fix lag between shifts or is that not possible?
I myself just recently picked up my second ATS originally had a 13 2 L turbo just picked up in April a 15 2 L turbo with the performance package fully loaded out the door for 42 1/2, I live in Northern California news yet to have any issues regarding heat or power loss probably going to wait till 2017 to look into the ATSV give it a couple years to work the kinks out
Could you solve the heat problem through the aftermarket.
Larger inter cooler, oil cooler etc.
+Jason Ortiz There is no overheating problem.
thatssss not what i've read some people saying about this and the new ZO6
***** This is not a Z06. Only one person has said anything about an ATS-V overheating, and that was Matt, in this video, about one particular ATS-V that overheated during testing a couple months ago. GM has already told Matt that that particular ATS-V was running a pre-production part that failed which is why it overheated. That part was not used on any production cars, and none of them have overheated, despite being flogged around tracks all day by motoring journalists.
The Z06 is a completely different shape and has much more difficult packaging challenges.
this isn't a ZO6? didn't even notice! not
anyway my question was specifically posed to Matt. And yes, i actually have read about a couple of guys having heating problems with these.
but i guess you know all
***** "hatssss not what i've read some people saying about this and the new ZO6"
Clearly it had to be explained to you that this was not a Z06 since you lumped them in together.
I haven't seen anything about anybody ever having an overheating issue in an ATS-V other than the aforementioned one that Matt explained. And that was not a production model. And you can be as sarcastic as you want, the information I gave you came directly from Matt, who got it from GM.
nice run man.
What's up, guys. Outstanding Performance. wrench shelf !!!
Pobst thought it was turbo lag in the coupe at Laguna vid this morning.
R.I.P. CTS and ATS V
What's the difference between the ats-v and the cts-v??
The ATS-V is smaller the the CTS-V and has a 470hp twin turbo V6. The CTS-V is bigger and has a supercharged 640hp V8.
Matt; the flywheel in an automatic car is called the flexplate
So whats the last year for the LS CTSV ?
Hey matt if it was your money would you spend the extra for the M3/C63?
I love, love the new C63. My favorite of the bunch.
+Nik Brudar The C63 coupé looks dope tho. My preference will always stay with the sporty one and yes, its the M3 for me.
+Nik Brudar no, I've just driven them all.
+Nik Brudar have you seen how the new c63 s handles? You'd never believe how that big hunk of metal can eat up tarmac.
+Ethanmeister In head to head testing it handles worse than the ATS-V. Slalom, figure 8, lap times, all of them slower than the ATS-V.
How does the mag ride feel? Pobst thought the Caddy felt slower around the track when it actually was just as quick. Maybe that suspension soaks up everything so well you lose the some sensation of speed? Sometimes good for the track is less fun for the street.
+Michael Cohen Its so good Ferrari uses it.
@Renzo Sing cts-v is still a supercharged v8
Looking forward to that Alpha platform on the new Camaros
OMG dat turn-in is no joke!
@thesmokingtire The Folding rear seat is in the "Luxury Package" should be standard....its one of the handful of things that I cant stand about my 05 STi.
is it possible to go limp mode in N/A engine?
+David MuscleGuy Yes...
+David MuscleGuy
"Limp mode" has nothing to do with engine induction but with electronics.
Flávio Coimbra thank you but i think the case is a lot more vulnerable in FI engines .
+David MuscleGuy I think I'm with you on that man, even at the drag strips most fi vehicles are not consistent at all like the n/a vehicles, unless they sit for like an hour or 2 to cool down
+David MuscleGuy it happened in my FC RX7 Vert (NA) and I had to change the TPS
What data do you have that suggest the ATS-V doesn't handle heat well? Any data logs that show timing being pulled due to high IAT2s?
I don't do data tests, but the entire /DRIVE staff will attest to how slow it was during our drag racing segment due to the heat.
+SuperNorm02 Do you have any data logs showing these temps?
+MrNicholg Actually, I do. I can forward you the temps from the Cosworth Toolbox app. Where would you like for me to send them?
I don't use windows, but maybe someone else will take you up on it. Can you relay coolant, oil, diff, and ambient air temps here?
Beautiful car
Cadillac has really stepped up their game with the ATS-V and CTS-V. Much respect to them. On track I would take an M3 and on road the C63. ATS-V is almost as good but not quite there. Maybe next generation.
matt what is the difference between the ats v and the cts vsport? arent they both tt v6's?
+TheSmokingTire When is the 2017 ATS-V review coming? Maybe the transmission is flawless, the engine sounds like a purring tiger, and the interior is made of chinchilla furs.
Come on Matt, my 10 year old daughter had the CUE system figured out in less time then it took to watch this video
As always. Honest as ffff. Luff it
The automatic equivalent of a flywheel is a flex plate I believe. Don't hold me to that, I'm not good with my knowledge of automatics.
+Jue_boy You are correct, sir!
***** Haha good to know. Make sure you got a decent diet to keep things regular.
Looking to get myself a used Ats v now 😻
Was this shot on a Dji Osmo? really great quality!
I wish u can have Gopro fit outside maybe couple of them at the wheel and exhuast
Picky picky... and now i believe we have philosophically have different opinions on what sounds tasty... this V6 sounds angry and tight +TheSmokingTire
but I love the videos....keep 'em coming
when will you sign with food network channel? I could see you being a food tester lol with diners drive ins and dives
+Jesse Rivas LOL I could see that happening as well!
+TheSmokingTire Hi matt, the automatic version of a flywheel is called a flex plate.
