When I swapped in my S52 into my E36 that was my main concern. I found out about the oil pump nut issue after I finished the swap and I mainly did drift events and hooned in that car. Luckily it survived until I got rid of it.
One single nut loose, engine is toast. hundreds of hours making everything work and come together it takes 3 seconds to ruin it all.. Thats life right there.
oil pump nut is one of the first things any BMW owner should do with any m5x family engine if they plan to track. that's BMW 101. and number of ways to do it.
BMW should really do a recall on this and also fix all BMW's E46 to add the subframe reinforcement plates as well. These are probably the 2 worse things about the E46.
I begun to follow you since you posted the first video of "RtTA" and guess what!? I bought an MX-5, and then, at the very first track day, after all the oil and liquid change, I had problems too, and now I'm trying to fix it up on my own. Anyway, that's the dark side of the game, but we get fun doing it...not spend mony. Good work mate! l'll stay tuned on your channel!
Hi T.H. I've been watching your channel all along and enjoy your videos and info. Thank you much! So I guess after the initial shock and frustration of the engine blowing one has to just look at the situation as an opportunity. (No sarcasm intended). I drive a 2002 E46 330CI which has been completely swapped out for a 2006 M3. I love this thing and the S54 engine (Although it's still a BMW so........) That said I'm rooting for you to do the swap as well. I know it's a fair chunk of change but you'd be a very happy racer. (Until the Vanos goes or the.........LOL) Just rooting for you in any case. Thanks again for the great content!
I had exactly the same problem on my E46 330 Ci with which I've done 256 laps of the Nürburgring and a lot of trackdays. I had the chance to see it and stop the engine immediately ! It happened at 160k Km (100k miles).
Yes it happened on the road, not on track but during a strong high rev acceleration. A good oil was in it (Motul 300v). No problem with the engine after that.
+Chris FLPS you are correct. But from what I've read, by the time you notice it it could be too late. Also this is on the track and I've got a thousand things to pay attention to as it is. I want a large obvious gauge and an audible warning haha
Damn, I've had my 320i for just over a year now, and the amount of car killing problems there are with this car scares me. I didn't know this was a thing! I don't track my car though, it's just a fun project car that I'm fixing up. Reckon this would be an issue on my engine? It's the M54B22
is that the nut next to the timing chain located below the oil pan?Sometimes if that nut is loose or went off the motor makes a clunk sound or more likely a diessel sound.
was this with the stock rev limiter? my 02 325i spends a good 10 seconds a day at 7k rpm drifting with 236k miles. i dont hear this happening to often on the 2.5
That sucks. For those of you considering buying an E46 now or in the near future, you should only buy it under the following circumstances: a) you own or have unlimited access to another car and b) you are rich or have a very healthy income allowing you to spend a couple grand per year on maintenance. These cars are old now and are not to be trusted. I speak from experience having owned a 325i my self.
I'm not saying they're bad cars...in fact they're well engineered and the layout is amazing, but you do need to be in a fairly stable financial position to own one (I'm not saying you aren't)...but I'm sure many people get lured in by the extremely accessible price tag on these now 12+ yr old babies.
I have an 01 330 cic (convertible), and you are right..if you take it to bmw, they want crazy money for repairs. I've saved thousands and my lift had paid for itself with this car. I diy everything- subframe cracks are to be repaired and reinforced now..she's on the lift. Fun times for a 183k mile vert.
Doyle smith and I was convinced the convertible was the only one to not crack the floor because of the bulkhead, really tho they aren’t bad at all as long as you know how to use a torque wrench and take matters into your own hands, my dealers not been expensive at all either, they quoted me 950$ to replace the entire clutch assembly and main seal as long as I provide the oem parts with a 1 day return time, only considering letting them do it because it’s my only car and they warranty it for 2years/50k miles
i never worried about this on my 325 until now!

Keep up the good work bro.. don't let any of this put you down😎
Waiting for the upcoming vids🔜🚗💨
+A.G S don't worry it's hard to stop me. This car will be a solid track machine no matter what.
Holy cow! The difference between then and now! I like both!
One single nut loose, engine is toast.
hundreds of hours making everything work and come together

+MultiTerpen #thanksbmw
It's still a fear of the team when we see Thomas freak out over a low oil pressure light. Stupid oil pump nut...

You just stressed me out, i will check my oil pump later today.

Thanks for following along! Good for you working on your own car. For me, thats half the fun.
This is not a small problem, the engine opened and out of the car takes the fun deep underground, of corse this is not fun! Keep going man!
Rebuild with intention for a turbo. *cheeky smile*

Couldn't find an s54 for a reasonable price in time sadly...
yep, shit happens... :( , good luck putting all back to work !

+Taurim so after you saw the oil pressure light you turned off the engine right away? Did you save the engine?
Yes it happened on the road, not on track but during a strong high rev acceleration. A good oil was in it (Motul 300v). No problem with the engine after that.
sorry to hear about the engine bud
+Fluffy BonnieGames thanks. It turned out to be a blessing in disguise...
The turner kit and vac kit shear instead of the bolt de-threading itself FYI.
Its another known issue well documented in e46fanatics
Oh, man. I'm sorry to hear that. :( Time to LS swap! :P
Not sure if you need an oil pressure gauge, if you lose pressure the red oil light on your dash will flash up anyways. Correct me if I' wrong pls
+Chris FLPS you are correct. But from what I've read, by the time you notice it it could be too late. Also this is on the track and I've got a thousand things to pay attention to as it is. I want a large obvious gauge and an audible warning haha
Ok that definitely makes sense!
Hey man just subscribed to your channel! Gotta support my fellow Canadians. Are you in the gta?
+nightmonkey07 just outside it. Thanks for the sub!
drop in b30, you have nothing to loose. Its wayyy better than b25 could ever be even with all the bolt ons.
damn that sucks

+vviiper very unlikely. It's caused by continually spending time up by the redline.
Who says I don't already spend all my time at redline? ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Awe I wanted to see you window the block

+Zack Mathis this was stock rev limiter yes.
wow. im excited to see the car come back together!
well i blow my engien to..... the tip of the fule jet failed on my 330d on cylinder 6 so no more trackday for me this year 😣
What engine are you going to be putting in your 325?
+POPgoesTHEweezl something a bit better. Watch for the next episodes of road to Time Attack.
Well if you insists I'll lift it up next week and do it

+KingRichard they aren't THAT bad. Just learn to do basic maintenance yourself. If you can. They are quite reliable.
