The graphics would have been actual boundaries since flash devs loved using stuff like treelines as ways to create map borders without making it obvious. Otherwise yes I'd have probably loved a game like this. Reminds me vaguely of Mud and Blood series, and that Armorgame series where you played as a lone soldier fighting through various wars and conflicts (I recall a finnish campaign)
