    Slight correction, the A1 GNR Pacific was the first successful 4-6-2 Loco in Britain, the GWR Great Bear was the first pacific locomotive in Britain

    You did save the best for last Sam. I thoroughly enjoyed that. No favourites for me, I liked them all. I grew up on Br Eastern (WCML) and so most of these were every day sitings for me. Keep up the good work Sam. Thanks, David.

    I think the V2's used to pull sometimes mail trains but mainly fish trains, that's why Green Arrow (4771) was called Green Arrow, she was named after one of the fast fish trains that she pulled, well that's what I got from Chris Eden Green's SLIPS. Sorry if my english is not perfect 'cause im not a native speaker

    Wow...what a history class..always great presentations..with model railways, derailments can be avoided by placing a straight after a points..this stops the rotational axis which leads to derailments.

    The A3 is not the first pacific, because Churchward designed his 4-6-2 Great Bear in 1908, but it was later rebuilt into a castle class in 1922 because it had a lot of problems

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  7 лет назад

      Hi! Yeah you're absolutely right - I got that wrong, I meant to say the first class of pacific, since the great bear was just a single loco!

    Fine end to this series. I read that braking technology was improved by Gresley too (had never occurred to me before). A topic for one of your future researches might be something like this. Not sure how many would be interested though. Alan.

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  8 лет назад

      Thanks very much Alan, interesting about the braking technology (It's certainly interesting to me!) I didn't know anything about that either, I'll read up on that then, see if there's a video to be made there!

    Sam-
    Great series of videos! Out of the Gresley-designed locomotives, although I do love the A3 and A4, the 4-4-0 he designed just edges them out for me. I love those!

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  8 лет назад

      Hi Ed, you're absolutely right, the 4-4-0 is absolutely gorgeous, and I was searching for a decent one of those for a long time!
      Thanks very much for the comment,
      Cheers,
      Sam :)

    • @raveoned
      @raveoned 8 лет назад

      I'm going to have to find a British 4-4-0 soon for my layout to run as well! I have plenty of American ones, but that type of locomotive went out of style when the Atlantic and Pacific types took hold.
      The UK had apparently been building and running that type for a good bit longer than in the US!

    i don't understand how does the p2 struggle on points. doesn't it pick up electricity from the tender

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  8 лет назад

      Hi Muneem - she doesn't struggle for power on the points, she actually struggles from de-railments! The front wheels, and sometimes the driving wheels, like to jump off on the tight points - it's probably a design error from Hornby on either the locos, or the points, but many locos have the same problems!

    Hi again looking at Wikipedia Riddles designed the Austerity 2-8-0 and 2-10-0 during WW2. During his time at British Railways it seems the CME role changed and was shared a bit more with his two assistants Cox and Bond. He led the development of British Railways standard designs and they are usually credited to him. Hope I've got this right. Wiki has a good section on the standard designs. Anyone else add any more?

    Great vid Sam, but one correction. Gresley's A1/A3 was not Britain's first pacific, that was Churchwards No111 Great Bear of 1908 on the GWR. As a GWR nut I can't have Mr Gresley stealing the thunder from Gods Wonderful Railway. ;) But that gripe aside, another wonderful vid. Keep up the good work mate :)

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  8 лет назад

      Hi Jon, thanks very much for that - you're fully correct though, what I meant to say was 'first class of pacifics', which I think would be okay, since the Great Bear was only one? Sorry about that anyway - I seem to be very good at mis-reading my info sheets lol!
      All the best mate,
      Sam :)

    • @stashyjon

      no worries mate Great Bear was hardly a major success, and they did only build one, although Hawksworth did a design study for a pacific in 1947, but th GWR never followed through with it, and when BR came along they built their own pacifics so Hawksworths idea was forgotten about

    The fact that they were all scraped it kinda becoming false now since they are currently making the 7th engine of the p2 class "prince of wales", Being made by the same people who made Tornado the pepppercorn A1. I know that if its being made it doesn't count as it as facts but still, Its a new P2.

    14:14 is that your only loco with sound? Do any of your other locos have DCC but no sound?
    16:09 the Prince of Wales new build P2 now has a completed smokebox, and they're doing work on the drive wheels.
    17:23 do you have a model Mallard in LNER blue?
    22:32 you said 4471, when it's actually 4771!
