Hello my dear friends. It's great to see you here again.
This story of mine is about a wooden hand plane, one of the main hand tools of carpentry and traditional woodworking.
This hand plane and its blade were in very poor condition. I achieved a result with my aesthetic perception and beauty philosophy, by prioritizing functionality as in my usual works.
As you know, I love the combination of wood and brass metal. This work of mine is a clear example of this. We will watch together many craft works such as woodworking, lathe work, metal work, carbon steel and sharpening, coloring the wood , wood finishing, french polishing.
I do not record how-to videos. If you have any questions, please ask, I am always happy to answer. Also share your thoughts and different approaches, I would love to listen.
There is another important issue that I want to mention; Sometimes faster work and faster productions are requested from me. My world does not and will not flow at that speed. I want to leave this trace here, just as this craftsman spent his few days in the workshop.
I hope this work will be a good accompaniment to your time while drinking your coffee or a glass of whiskey.
I am happy to share with you this work in which I have lived the four seasons of my life, and I dedicate this work to my beloved nature and animals.
Deepest greetings to all of you.

Because machine threads in wood, superglue + dust + hopes and dreams , a peened pin that only went in about an inch, and epoxy, equal old school craftsmanship. The only good thing in the video was the cats, and with the kind of dust kicked up in a shop, I wouldn't put mine anywhere near my workplace.

My husband thought this was an interesting restoration but would have preferred a tradional horn at the front of the plane. The strike button at the back is very nice. He also hopes you did not destroy a shallow compass plane. Thank you, Veronique.

I don’t know where to begin. This so fine on all levels-a beautifully worked restoration with thoughtful, tasteful, and perfectly executed embellishments, and every frame composed, lit, and shot with painstaking attention to detail then edited with great care so as to maintain an atmosphere of tranquility and unhurried, focussed devotion to excellence. The only possible improvement that could be made to your videos would be the magical inclusion of the aromas of the coffee, the wood, and the finishes you use. Your love of what you do fills every second of these episodes, and I salute you.

I ddidnt know you could turn wood on a metal lathe! (but I would have tried it if noone was looking.Hmm! Thats what you must have thought). Mr. Chickadee is my favorite channel; now yours is looking good. I have a hand crosscut that Ive had since 1969; I can still cut 1/4" plywood cleanly with it. I'd like to see that video of yours on restoration; the blade looks dull brown. Hmm! I thought that was a finger hole to stabilize your stroke when planing. Hope this work of love is performed on some other tools. The more I watch this work, the more I am reminded of what Jesus is doing with me--daily. Keep up the good work!

What an inspiring restoration. I myself am a tool restorer of sorts and I’m a big believer in preservation and bringing back tools to a usable condition.
It all starts with a kind of affinity for a once cherished hand tool now forgotten or dicarded to rust or rot in amongst a box of old rusty files at a flea market.
Can I ask what finish you used on the plane? Thank you

My father was a metal working toolmaker & her never wore rings, bracelets, necklace or wore long sleeves when working this type of equipment & he's made it to 87 intact with all digits still attached).

I was given an old Ogontz Tool Co no. 13 wooden jack plane. I think many would’ve thrown it out because it’s a mess: One of the ears is broken off the wedge, the mouth area and inside the plane looks like it was on fire (😯🔥??), there are cracks in the sole, the iron has pitting and rust, a corner of the chip breaker’s curved part is eaten away by rust. It is a pitiful sight.
But, I’m going to restore it. Why not? If I crap up the restoration, the plane is already a junker. But if I do a good job, well, that’s an accomplishment, a piece of history salvaged.
I found the exact size chip breaker on ebay for $11. I am going to have to graft in some repairs but Ohio white beech is not available here in Florida. I decided to go with an abandoned offcut of dusty birch at my local family-owned lumber yard; they almost donated the piece to me. Birch: Little grain, hardwood, light color, and easy to work with; I think it’ll be a close match.
Thank you for this rescue video. It was immensely enjoyable and helpful. I will refer to it often. My tools are not as fine and precise as yours, but I will derive the same pleasure as you surely did.

I have a very similar plane but in better shape than this at the beginnning. Yours probably started as a scrub plane, as its quite slim and has no chip breaker. Just the blade shouldve been curved at the front but that was probably ground away at some point when it wasnt needed as a scrub plane anymore. Same thing happend to mine but i also got a newer ECE scrub plane thats still curved and these narrow planes really are perfect to remove thick shavings very fast.

Yet another masterclass in how to do things properly. All the work done is at a nice, slow, even pace and yet seems to reach it's gaol just as rapidly as those using power tools. The finished product is beautiful and works better than I would have thought. But, and this is only my opinion, to my tired old eyes the brass dome at the rear jsut does not seem right somehow. The front one is possibly OK but again I'm not so sure. Maybe the video exaggerates the dimensions but they just don't seem right. Who am I to disagree with the master?
