Can You Beat Fallout 3 With Your Eyes? (in text form)
To play Fallout 3 with nothing but my eyes, I spent $230 on an infrared eye tracker, the Tobii Eye Tracker 5 and mounted it to my iMac with my own proprietary adhesive strip. The trash it came with didn’t stick and I got lucky that I couldn’t find my superglue. I used it to secure a thumbtack in my wall and haven’t seen it since. The Tobii company has software that lets the eye tracker work in a handful of games but none of them are Fallout and it’s not full fledged control. it’s looking around by turning your head, not complete PC control with only your eyesight. Windows 10 has some eye control accessibility options too but those don’t work in-game. For that I downloaded Project Iris. This program turns your entire monitor into a touchscreen for your vision. It’s wild. Iris lets you map any key on the keyboard to a box on-screen. The eye trackers 4 sensors track your pupils at all times using infrared light and when they’ve sense you looking at the box, the key is pressed virtually. That allowed me to map most of the useful keys to the boxes. The controls I had on-screen and their layout changed over time as I learned which keys were more useful than the others. The starter set should be fairly self explanatory: WASD for movement, Tab for the Pip-Boy, space to jump, the arrow keys to move through dialog, escape to pause. Run is Q, that’s the auto run button. Look Up is a lie, don’t believe what it says. You won’t be seeing that vision circle on-screen during the gameplay, it wasn’t centered properly and I found it distracting. And with that, you’re ready to witness the most mentally exhausting challenge I’ve ever done.
To prove that I was, in fact, playing with my eyes and not a controller or a keyboard and mouse, I turned on the webcam. But it’s been a while since you’ve seen me. The last time was in December and that was before my drinking got way out of control. I’m a changed individual and I wanted to prove that by doing the worst thing I could think of. I bought a sexy french maid outfit and I gotta say I make a woman’s medium look [better than than those whores on Amazon do] pretty good. Now, in my final form, the real game can begin and I can begin to explain what a f*cking nightmare this challenge was. Those blink grenades are not what you think, they’re not used in this video, that mod should’ve been disabled. What I didn’t realize before starting was how difficult it is to maintain complete and total control over your eyes for hours on end. They’re constantly subconsciously darting around taking in the surroundings. You don’t really think when you look from one side of the screen to the other, you just do it and it happens. But here, I can’t look over to the left side of the screen, or the right side or the top or the bottom without running the risk of accidentally pressing a button.
Luckily, the toddler room is a free for all where nothing matters. I had all the time in the world to acclimate myself to the controls and realize I had no way to look down, bringing us to the first major bump in the road. Speed bumps come in pairs, trust me I will get f*cked again. Moving the mouse is not as simple as remapping a key on the keyboard. This is a mouse we’re talking about, a living breathing organism, there are complex mechanisms at play. The solution? Can you say “trackpad for your eyeball”? That’s exactly what I got, though at this juncture I was woefully unaware of what I’d just done. I spent minutes sitting there trying to fill out my Special stats with that little b****d, unable to tell what was really happening. It had to be bigger. Mickey hit the medieval stretch machine, my playing field was substantially larger, I could now look freely around the world, solving all of my 1 year old problems.

The combination of how hard this challenge was, how happy Paul looked when he finished, and hearing how long he's been alcohol free made this one of the most feel good Mitten Squad videos ever. The maid costume was the icing on the cake

On a serious note, two of my cousins have lived with muscular dystrophy, they may not live another year, and this kind of thing could really make their, and people in situations like theirs(or worse), time left more enjoyable. Im so glad you’ve shown me, and hopefully others, this kind of accessibility can be used on probably most pc games. I cant wait to show them!(they have trouble working the keyboard as of late)
It truly is wonderful how technology has progressed like this.
Imagine becoming paralyzed and unable to play your favorite videogames anymore. Then you learn that you can play them like this.

Honestly his whole plight making this work seems like it could be really significant for developers making software for people who can't use their hands.
It looks difficult as hell to learn as Paul said. With most body parts one has to make a conscious effort to move them, with eyes that principle is completely reversed. They move whenever you're not thinking about their movement, and that's because that's how they evolved to work. It's like trying to play life with the controls inverted, but if you have no other options for doing something you enjoy, at least it's better than nothing.
I sincerely wish your cousins the best. I hope they can live their lives the happiest that they can. You're a great cousin to care for them, I pray they can have the best and happiest of times.
This mans needs to be put into the Guinness World Records book for: "Most Unique Completions of Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas" I dont think that record would be beat for a very long time.

One of the first videos I saw and truly learned how insane this man was. He revolutionized this corner of the internet with his humor and bonkers ideas, his impact will never be forgotten. I'm physically disabled and have an incredibly difficult time playing games like these no matter how badly I want to. Thank you for making this video, it goes to show just how great technology is getting while it also shows the things that need to improve.
i dont know your disability obviously, but as a one handed gamer ive found using a 12 button mouse with keys mapped to them strategically is the most comfortable choice. ben heck hacks on yt makes some good one handed console controllers too. and there are some options for using your feet too. trackball types and button stompers. hope that helps u friend.
@@cmaco7583 thank you for this but sadly I have a type of Muscular Dystrophy. It's a genetic condition called Spinal Muscular Atrophy. It's a progressive disease and I was diagnosed when I was 1. I'm 19 now and treatments only came out for it about 5 years ago. I have severe muscle atrophy and the treatments can only do so much. I can only push on feather touch devices and I can't move my arms.

I game using Tobii eye tracking and before used various head switches, sip and puff too til I had to be vented. The worry of losing gaming was a big deal to me, so I'd love to gift you all the equipment you need so you can enjoy that hobby again like I can! A charity helped me initially, so I'd consider it paying thayr gift forward to help you :)

I'm just having such a hard time getting caretakers for any significant amount of time. I live in Colorado, USA. There's an extreme shortage of nursing and caretakers nationwide I believe but it's definitely bad here. My disease process is extremely slow and with these treatments it's almost non-existent. What can be so irritating though is too much damage has already occurred and without a cure and 50 stimpacks 🤣 I probably won't recover. With the nursing shortage it's incredibly difficult to get the help I need to set it up (let alone get the care I need) while it would also take multiple days to exactly figure out the positioning. I hope someday I can get the nursing I used to have.
Future must be manga-style VR with headgear that intercepts brainwave signalling and translates it to instead move an avatar around in a virtual world.... rather than said brainwave signals trying to move the real world body.
I sincerely hope I'm still alive by the time those kinds of things become a reality.

To be fair this is an amazing example of being able to play this and potentially way more games for the disabled community. He put in the time to show off optimal placements of commands and went through the hell of getting there so others don't have to. Bravo.

I use Tobii Eye tracking to play games! It existed for the disabled before it was developed for gamers (I think for streamers to see where their eyes often go for extra data?). The disabled gaming community is small so having progress sped up by development for a larger demographic helps us disabled too! I'm so happy that playing with your eyes due to disability or not is getting visibility as often people don't think it's possible when I tell them that's how I play! You do get a lot better with practice and I can type pretty fast too now, close to how fast I could with my hands :)

This is all because he couldn't beat every wii sport at once. Now he must evolve. Hone every ounce of his body to be optimized for gaming. Every thing from the skin on the bottom of his feet to the hair on his head must be polished for peak gaming. You can tell this is his goal, since it's scientificially proven that both a Santa hat, and a maid outfit too seductive for youtube, are both the only thing you should wear, and also that they are the best at enhancing strategic thinking and reaction times to the maximum. Paul is both an inspiration and an idol, of which we cannot hope to surpass

ok but the fact that you capture the moments when you have breakthroughs is something that makes this whole thing like 10x better, like, when you do challenges that come with intensely restrictive and frustrating mechanics, seeing your sorrow, anger, joy, etc is a real treasure
It's not about finishing the challenge. It's about the little challenges along the path to that finish.

It's interesting that such compatibility options exist to interface with games. Maybe it's not a big help for fast action games in the vein of Odin Sphere Leifthrasir, but the fact that slower RPGs like this are possible at *all* without touching a thing is pretty amazing.

I wouldn't say it's "hard" to stay sober, but I will acknowledge that people develop problems like this for various reasons & they can often be very difficult to resolve satisfactorily. I second your congratulations on a job well done

Overcoming an addiction to anything is a serious accomplishment, not the least of which because it generally involves overcoming the reason you became addicted in the first place

@@justinmoss9488 to be fair, that's a very common thing with addicts, and it's usually not a good thing. But, granted he enjoys this enough and doesn't run out of ideas, the negative and positive feelings he gets doing these challenges might just be a much healthier addiction for him
