Funnily enough, Benny apparently shoots you in the face twice.
So he double tapped you in the brain and you just show up in his casino like a month later.
No wonder he panics the moment he sees you breathing.

You can be a spy. You just can't be a spy with Boone. Boone is essentially a broken man.
He no longer has the emotional capacity for such games. And he tells you that upfront. When you're going to the legion camp to meet with Caesar he tells you. If you want to go in guns blazing, bring him. If you want a more subtle approach, don't. He would rather die guns blazing than to pretend to be friends with the people that made him choose to kill his wife and unborn child.
Other companions such as Arcade Gannon are a little more malleable on this.
The factions are also fairly malleable. They'll tell you when you're clearly crossing a line and will be making an enemy out of them.
All in all, everyone has boundaries. And being a spy is within the confines of the game world. Though the information you'd get as a spy isn't that amazing.

    • @CaptainSpanky96

Yeah, except the point where you can get close enough to Caesar to botch his surgery and kill him, the spy-iest spy thing you dreamed of in spy school, is past the point of no return for all the factions.

Yeah, another curious thing is that the NCR doesn't require you to interact with the Legion at all. You could go the Fort, kill Ceasar and everyone else, and Cassandra Moore would be like "cool, now go deal with the Khans, they are a real threat".
The NCR aren't aware at all of the existence of the Platinum Chip, so for their quest you don't need to meet Benny, Yes Man or Ceasar, nor get the chip. You just meet House once and can immediately kill him, and then go deal with the other factions.

Pretty much everyone has this experince at the start first time round because for the story to unfold properly you need to turn right and the game strong arms you into this, which is fine as a design choice, but the method isn't exactly subtle and leads almost every player to a frustrating death and reload early on their first playthrough.

Definitely worth getting the baseline mods just for stability and QoL alone to make it much less frustrating. I know there are vanilla purists that honestly think they’re taking away from the intended experience just from using something like NVSE or community bug fixes, but to hell with that bullshit. Yet another reason why the Goodsprings opening is awesome is that the whole quest - walking into a conflict between two factions with one about to invade the other, learning about each side and the context of the conflict, choosing a side, and gathering allies in preparation for the ultimate battle - is the _entire main quest_ in microcosm! Not only does it serve as an effective tutorial for the faction reputation system and the way your skills impact dialogue options, but it's a preview of how the entire rest of the game is structured. That's some really clever design, there!
Also, shoutout to New Vegas's awesome companion characters. My favorite part of the later stages of New Vegas is how no matter which faction you start doing quests for, it makes sure to put a bad side of that faction at the forefront, posing the question of if it's really the horse you want to back.
-The main appeal of the NCR tends to be wanting to not see the Mohave be led with the brutality and oppression of the Legion. Having seen the Legion slaughter towns makes the NCR choice feel like a given, if just to avoid such violence. However, once you get deeply involved, The NCR quests all feel impersonal, coming down from a chain of command that sees very little nuance in how to handle their enemies. Nearly all they tell you to do is kill: They want you to dispatch the Khans, Mr. House, and the Brotherhood of Steel, and are recalcitrant to try to ally with them instead even if you insist. It's frustrating to see their leadership be so close-minded, and it makes you question their ability.
-As said in the video, part of the Legion's appeal is how they take a strict stance on trying to curb decadence and not retrace the mistakes of the past. However, to fulfill Caesar's ambitions you see the White Hand Society returned to cannibalism, and Caesar seems to not care in the slightest about this development so long as they are useful to him. The truly damning event that occurs in this chain of quests, of course, is when Caesar becomes bedridden due to a brain tumor. It is something that could be cured with ease using technology, or even just through having anyone learned around him, and despite this there is not a single soul in the fort who could help. It highlights the negative side of the Legion's no-tolerance policy on tech as well as showing the effects of their anti-intellectualism. I always felt that the reason why the option to intentionally kill Caesar during that sequence is because it would be at this point when many players were the most uncertain about siding with the Legion.
-For Mr. House, his veneer of rationality is dropped not only when you refuse to give him the chip, as you showed, but also if you wish to deal with the Brotherhood of Steel peacefully. A proper alliance with them is impossible, and he berates you for even suggesting such a thing. He initially seems like an option that may let you not pick a side between the Legion and NCR and work towards something better, but in the end all his route offers is the wholesale slaughter of both sides.
I feel like the story actively tries to show you that no faction is without flaw, and emphasizes this when you choose a side to help rather than letting it be ignored.

My favorite thing about New Vegas's world building is the writers' attention to actual historical detail. Little things like Caesar being pronounced kai-zar by his followers because in ancient latin ae always sounds like "I" and then everyone else pronounces it see-zer like we do in English now. You can hear on the radio Mr. New Vegas talk about how Lanius "ordered a tenth of his own force be killed by the other nine tenths." This was an actual practice in Ancient Rome and is where the term "Decimation" comes from and why it starts with the prefix deci- for 10 even though we use it now to mean destroy completely. Or even how at the end of Mr. House's route he mentions wanting "to get the monorail to run on time" as a reference to the common fascist dog whistle "at least he got the trains to run on time*." There are a million other details I could gush about, but it really is the small things like that which show how much the writers cared about making the world feel real and fleshed out.

@@thatonebritishidiot3037 yeah, tho I think more specifically it is being meticulous and planned about the things that directly benefit him and the flow of caps into New Vegas. He knows the monorail can help drive business to Vegas. It bothered him that it was not doing that as effectively as possible, so of course it will be one of the first things fixed, even in the wake of a huge battle that has probably created a million other issues that would be more humane to address than the freaking monorail, yet that is what he is focused on. We hear some Followers talk about how if Mr House would just share some of his medical data, not even any of his physical property, they could improve medical practices all across the Mojave and beyond. Does that lack of quality bother him like the monorail's tho? Nope, of course not because those people who'd need medical attention were never anything more than maybe customers to him. He's got the classic billionaire god complex where he thinks he and his city should be the center of things so that the benefits can trickle down to the rest of humanity because only he can truly know how to best use those resources. Anyway yeah TLDR IMO House only cares about being meticulous when he gets to directly benefit, otherwise he is happy ignoring the problems of others

As a kid, Fallout 3 was one of my favourite games of all time and when New Vegas came out, I remember being put off by its different approach to a Fallout story as well as the bugs and glitches that plagued the game on launch; but there was something about it that kept me coming back. When I got to Nipton and saw the Legion for the first time, that's when everything started to come together for me, and the game just clicked. I remember being kinda shocked that I could meet this villainous, evil character like Vulpes and just put a bullet in his head immediately instead of him going unconscious because he's a major antagonist that's too important to die. I went away from that encounter thinking 'well, that was kind of an anticlimax' - then all of a sudden I had Legion Assassins hunting my ass down to the ends of the Earth, and I realised just what kind of game this was. It was the kind of game where you truly shape the story, with no arbitrary limitations, no plot armour for any characters, tangible consequences for your actions that make sense, and I immediately fell in love with it.
Imagine a Fallout 3 where you could just blow your Dad's head off with a Combat Shotgun and have the story adapt to it instead of saying 'hey, buddy, uh... no!" and reviving him. New Vegas is that kind of game. I haven't put it down since. Truly the GOAT of RPG video games.

Most of them are boring skill or perk checks that allow you to bypass a section of a mission, get a reward, new line of dialogue, etc. There are only a handful of options that actually do something interesting, like the Hard Luck Blues mission, where you can choose to kill or save the trapped vault dwellers. But even that is still pretty boring. If you save the vault dwellers, you can find them and collect some vault trinkets every few days. Save the crops, and you get a cool ending slide, great.

    - House disregards democracy because of the nuclear event, but he as a billionaire kinda contributed to it, and he wants to bring back highly advanced technologies. He might have survived the last 200 years but he is a dying man. He should have died long ago and could die any second from a slight brease. House isn’t concerned with what will happen after his death, which is the largest question, what happens when powerful cyber soldiers lock down the Hoover Dam, and the only one who can control them dies from Alzheimer’s at the age of 250? House is the best option if he had plans for death, but he doesn’t and won’t ever do that. Choosing House is the best choice but ultimately it’s a non-choice, since you are just kicking the decision down road 30-50 years.
    - Ceasar is the biggest hypocrite. He forbids high technology and guns because it artificial/unnatural yet he uses an autodoc to artificially extend his life/reign. He gives every legionnaire ‘healing powder’ but forbids chems, despite the fact that healing powder is a chem. He claims that his rule is necessary to end barbarism but he is the cause of the most barbaric acts of all. He says that a victory must mean that the best of each side should survive, yet also claims that everything that isn’t the legion must be erased and replaced by their ‘mono-culture’. He constantly shit-talks the NCR for catering to the rich, while he literally enslaves people.
Ceasar isn’t sympathetic, he is just an evil man, who is highly intelligent. He is good at making up excuses for why his evil is justified, and charismatic enough to have people thank him for torturing, raping, enslaving and killing their families.

I like how in goodsprings, after the tutorial quest, when you meet trudy and joe cobb you can actually choose to side with the powder gangers
I also like how even though its the same as in fallout 3 with megaton's explosion, there is some benefits to siding with the powder gangers. That being the ability to go the the prison and get their quest and a more peaceful walk towards the south until you get to the outpost
Unlike fallout 3 where nuking megaton is just not all that rewarding compared to what you lose upon choosing the nuclear option

It's really not fair how every UpIsNotJump video can be long, but somehow the longer the video length is the faster it seems to go. From the excellent production values, to the snappy, well-timed, editing of cuts, and punchlines, is seems that not only does time fly when you are having fun, but the perception of time is inversely correlated to the amount of fun one has. What I mean to say is excellent work Matt. If your show never gets any better than this then at least you've already become great.

One of the best examples of visual storytelling is with Mr House and New Vegas itself. One of his most iconic lines is "if you wish to see the fate of democracies, look out the window". But we have looked out the window. To get to the strip, we had to go through Freeside, a place so stark in contrast to the strip that it feels so jarring. The strip is clean, has electricity, has clean food and water and medical care. But it also requires a 2000 cap credit check to get in. Freeside has none of those things, its so dangerous that you'll often get attacked by random people on the off chance they might get something off you. The people there constantly lament that they don't have enough food or water and the groups trying to help like the Followers of the Apocalypse and The Kings can never get enough supplies to properly help. And the you want to know the best part? New Vegas is under the control of Robert House. This is his city, this is his ideal world. The rich and powerful get to live in luxury while the poor and destitute get nothing. I've looked out the window, Mr House, and i don't see the fate of democracies, i see your city and the kind of world you want if you get more power.

I think the biggest problem New Vegas has is that, because it had a relatively linear gameplay for an open world sandbox, there were some areas of the map that were basically useless except to just explore for your own curiosity. I've done numerous playthroughs but found areas like the entire south east and north west pretty pointless to adventure into if it was for one of the few quests that has you visit those areas.
I think because they worked so hard on the primary narrative, they couldn't write out enough smaller sub-plots to utilize their space.

This is kinda the interesting thing about F3 and FNV, they're opposites in that aspect where F3 side content is generally better(probably because the lead story writer isn't making them), but FNV has a great main narrative but because of the rushed development its kinda rigid as a result.

    • @marciamakesmusic

      @Spiffyo 10 месяцев назад +5

@@marciamakesmusic Eh, side quests can be argued as better, but the setpieces themselves vary as things like Vault 22 are great, while the field of Ghoul Reapers and that one farm south of the entrance to the Honest Hearts DLC is very dismal, and even the Viper and Jackal gangs are just hastily added. FNV has a great mainline quest comparatively, but F3 has more consistently good side content to explore and enjoy.

That has nothing to do with “linear gameplay” whatever that means. A tons of areas just straight up weren’t finished. Jacobstown was supposed to be a lot more involved than it ended up being. That’s the problem with being given 18 months to work on someone else’s shit engine. New Vegas with 4 years of development would have been a sight to see.

The thing I loved about New Vegas was the many, MANY references to the first two games, Fallout and Fallout 2, because it was all on the west coast. And the reason we barely got references to Fallout 3 was because the events of that game were only 4 or 5 years before New Vegas and that it happened on the opposite side of America.

And it makes plenty of sense when you realise that Ike's IHS possibly never even happened in the Fallout universe (it wasn't finished until the 90s and the divergence is early 60s) so you were looking at months (69 days for the Army Engineers to get across the country during a survey which Eisenhower was involved in said crossing) to cross the USA BEFORE it got nuked.
We take a lot of things for granted today, but none moreso than how the major highway projects globally came with improved communication connections and logistics.

What I absolutely love about the start of the game is the tutorial is optional. If you've just picked it up for the first time you can ask Sunny Smiles to show you the ropes, but if you're more familiar with the layout of the strip than you are with the layout of your own home then you can just peace on out of there. You decide how much time you want to spend learning the game.

If New Vegas is this good, just wonder what would've been if it was actually finished, or even better, imagine what Van Buren would've been like if it was allowed to exist in the first place, just take a look to Van Buren's design documents and you will see that while New Vegas is good, there was so much more potential behind an actual Fallout 3 made by the people who made the first games instead of the Skyrim with guns fanfic slop that Bethesda produces.

I love that Goodsprings was down to earth, gives you reasonable challenges to approach as a wasteland noob and also very realistic in terms of what a tiny village might look like 200 years after an apocalypse. Of course they'd be either building their own nice buildings to live in or very successfully renovating old run down ones and have a way to get food, communicate somewhat with other settlements and kind of defend themselves. Everything that I needed to believe Goodsprings was a real place was put front and center.

One of my favourite examples of writing in Fallout New Vegas is the fact that there are encounters and lines you will only ever hear when you fulfill very specific requirements; Such as NCR Troopers attempting to politically assassinate you when you have a Wild Child reputation and attempt to pivot to the NCR questline without ever interacting with them first.
When attempting to meet with the ambassador of the NCR (at his invitation) located in the NCR Embassy in The Strip, when approaching the secretary to get directions to Crocker's office for your appointment, she will give you directions to go down an enter the room at the end of a Hallway, it turns out to be an ambush by troopers who wish to bash your brains in for the crimes against the NCR they don't approve of despite higher ranks, or the brass so to speak, have overlooked or forgiven.

It's a crying shame it was rushed.

One of the things I love about this game is that the main story hook doesn't lose all sense if the player chooses to ignore or delay in pursuing it. Like in FO3 and FO4, "I need to find my dad!" and "I need to find my kid!", both of those it makes no sense to ever go faffing about with side quests because hello, you need to find your family member!!
But in NV it's like "I just was shot in the head, do I want to track down the guy and get revenge or just move on with my life grateful for a second chance", both options are valid and make perfect sense in the story. Even if you are the wanting revenge type, getting distracted from that for a side quest still doesn't feel as silly as it does in FO3 and FO4.

All throughout the game we hear tales about Lanius and his savage brutality, and we are witness to it once we face off against him, but if you’re charismatic enough to “fight with words” as he put it, we see he is more than that. He is practical, strategic, cunning and overall a good leader when it comes to war as opposed to Oliver who’s too prideful to admit when he’s defeated. He also is one of the only characters in the game to acknowledge how far you’ve come with one of the most bone chilling lines in the game: “Violence gave you that strength, awakened you. I can see it upon your face *_WHERE TWO BULLETS LEFT THEIR MARK_* “

Armored Warfare had me hooked the entire time Obsidian were the creatives behind the game. As soon as they were removed from the game, it just turned into a World of Tanks clone with more modern vehicles. When Obsidian is allowed to do their thing, they can make some amazing things.
