    The first two eves course are on at the wrong gauge hence that you are nail two eternits together then why not bring the valley laths closer to each other so you can dress the lead over them to make an upstand, it would be a lot more water tight and the best way when slating a valley in. Use blanks for verges to.

    I used to roof this way. Then I discovered slate hooks, no need for nails or copper tags. brilliant. Only nail the verges. Rubber slates and hooks is the future. No broken slates. There is now a gas fired device for fixing the slate hooks. Never though I would see that.! No need for 3/4 under eave slates neither. Use continuous under eaves. 3m long. A good looking secure roof.

    The only issue I have is how the lead sheet valley was installed ,why didn't you leave the lead another 3 inches longer on both sides so you could have formed the lead up and over your firing strips on the outside of the valley ?
    On tile roofs when you install chimney pans and valley metal you always turn up the outer edges of your metal work to prevent heavy rains from being wind driven under the tile ,I fully understand the true waterproofing system here isn't the slate tiles ,it's the underlayment system ,however it's good roofing pratice to prevent water from entering the tiles any chance you get ,you guys did a good looking job that should meet all warenty requirements easily but think about what I said about " rolling " your valley lead up and on top your strips ,in an area with heavy snow & ice loads having your leads turned up may be what prevents an ice dam from forming underneath your slate and pulling a valley apart ,investment seen it happen .

    • @SocialistChampagne
      @SocialistChampagne 7 лет назад +4

      The valley batten (firing strips?) can't be covered in lead, as that's where the valley slates need to be nailed - lead valleys should only be nailed (with copper or stainless steel) at the top and not on the sides or bottom. There should also be a welt (roll). These guys have done a sub-standard installation by doing the bare minimum.
      A battened roofing system would be nearly impossible to have ice dams, as there would be no ice restricting the flow of water on the underlay to the eaves/gutter.

    • @Sitdown570
      @Sitdown570 6 лет назад +3

      They cut the lead into 1 half metre lengths and then nailed them all together 😂😂😂 welt the lead on the edges all the way up the valley, wear gloves and use a dresser at all times, other than that it’s great 👍👍

    • @gaza19661310
      @gaza19661310 4 года назад

      @@SocialistChampagne the best way is to have upstand over the laths in a valley, just put the lead half bonded onto the valley laths to give you the other half to nail and while not effecting the lead so it can still contract and expand, but like you say they haven’t even bothered to put a welt on and this is a very poor job and will certainly leak.

If you don't do that area right there can be leaking which would be horrible for the homeowner and costly for the homeowner. So it sounds like there are things other people would do that might make it works better.

    Nailing them to tight that’s why you have to beat the crap out of the top of them. And that’s what Leeds to the white residue that runs down the roof when things settle.

    Using a bit of batten as a dresser and no welt on the lead... definitely not roofers, just builders having a go at roofing.

    Since when did we start slating with a joiners hammer ?, plus that felt should be on top of the lead otherwise water will just run under the valley boards and straight into the house

    Eternits are actually one of my favourites to slate in and in my opinion are probably harder to learn and more easy to fuck up big style compared to natural slate if you haven’t a clue what your doing, and will be honest the roof in this demo is at a poor standard, not the worst though as have seen some that have not been riveted or gauged properly.

  • @keithdechief1

    Why are there nails on the exposed lower edges of the tile?
    Surely that leaves them open for water ingress and nail rusting. Normally on slate roofs, you only nail under the area covered by the next tier of slates.

    • @anthonyashton4524
      @anthonyashton4524 2 года назад

      its a copper rivet, to hold the slate in place. it sits between each slate and there is no nail hole there. These are cement fibre slate, not real slate and thats how this system works.

    That first course is WAY too tight, these thin man made slates will eventually fail if they are hammered into a bend like that.

    • @michaelledford4751
      @michaelledford4751 7 лет назад +2

      Mike F are you serious about " Paper " , they could have installed those slate directly over the firing strips and the building wouldn't leak due to the corrugated roof decking by itself ,then they installed a self sealing adhesive backed Ice & water shield membrane over the entire roof deck before installing their firing strips ,then a lead sheet valley ,this job doesn't have any paper .

      I believe you, its obvious a journeyman roofer could easily pick this ridiculous roof apart.. I'm not a roofer and I could see a windy day would blow thos roof right off, hopefully cindy and Bobby aren't playing near it those tiles are like flying razor blades

    What is the nail in bottom of slate for

    • @musicbyhamby
      @musicbyhamby 5 лет назад

      Jeff Brosky they’re called copper disc rivets. They prevent the slates from bowing and stop the wind from getting under and moving the slate ect.

    • @jeffbrosky4558
      @jeffbrosky4558 5 лет назад

      So not real slate if your using copper rights to keep slate from bowing I have installed hundreds of squares of real slate from government buildings to church's and barns
