This is a strong reel designed to stop big fish in their tracks. Or wakes I guess. The Redington GRANDE is a fantastic product. It's great for Bluewater fishing for species like Tuna, Marlin, Sailfish, Dorado, Roosterfish, and of course the inshore species like Tarpon, Permit, Bonefish, etc.

With respect, I must say that the conclusion of this review makes a wonderful reel that will literally catch any fish that 99.9% of us would target sound like it should be a backup, or just good enough reel. I call BS. Redington made big game fishing accessible with this. Hope other brands follow their lead.

It's a fine reel. You make all valid points, but I think an angler would be money ahead buying something like a Tibor once. I'm not betting on this reel to last 20 years. 5 years sure, several trips absolutely. Saltwater is murder unless every screw, fitting, bushing, is absolutely 100% corrosion resistant and built to last.

What do you get by going with a more expensive reel over this? Sealed drag, machined, high torque...what do the more expensive reels offer in comparison?

Longevity, tighter tolerances, less glitching under torque. While this is fine reel for $300, I'm personally going to use the best possible reel I can get my hands on, Tibor or Hatch, for big species that I get on an airplane to pursue. The alloys in high end reels are tougher, more consistent, and you are less likely to have issues over the long haul. Reels tend to make funny noises and get glitchy over time. It's a fine reel for $300, but it ain't a Tibor.

Can you compare to the Behemoth?

Yes, the Behemoth will have the same torque but not as smooth. It also isn't machined to nearly the tolerances. (because it's a cast reel not a machined aluminum). The GRANDE is much smoother, tougher, and better all the way around. Of course it's twice the price. Pure torque though. Not much diff.

I had never considered that, if my line catches anything its usually around the fighting butt for some reason. I did cast quite a bit with this reel on a rod out here on the lawn and never found it to be a problem, but that's definitely something to consider.
