  • What is displaced caster and mechanical trail? Well, we talk all about it and the cool features that it has, as well as the roll that it plays in your front suspension. After this episode, we have come to the end of our series about front suspension geometry. We are taking a break from the series and getting ready to get into double wishbone. In the mean time we will be posting shop videos, drifting content and much more. So make sure to subscribe and don't miss out!

    Please continue with this format. Real information for people that actually want to learn. I knew most of what you covered in this series, but you did an excellent job compiling the information and presenting it in an intelligent, complete and logical manner.
    Thank you!!

    Great video series! Only thing I wish was covered a bit more was bump steer, and how moving anything around tends to cause or worsen it. On the VW GTI chassis, people sell roll center correcting ball joints, but there is no easy way to move the tie rod down an appropriate amount.

    I thought I knew something about suspension setting..after this video, I’m leaving my s2k alignment specs to factory recommendations and getting used to it first before I start making changes. Mindblown!!

    id love to see a video about your actual macpherson kit and explain how you like to set it up and explain why you guys chose the adjustment limitations it has. i see a lot of guys buy wisefab kits and then complain about the low caster it has and the non existent self steer. not that its a bad thing, i just see people buy things they dont understand.

    Scrub radius can be affected by wheel offset and size. Lots of guys running a lot of neg offsets I’m sure would have tracking issues and generally just a shit ride. It’s effects on steering input and return to centre are effected As well. Good work I’m still watching 👍

    would it be absurd to ask you to make a video of you going through your billet mantis kits adjustments, and recommendation for where good starting points would be, I will be buying your s14 kit no doubt. But it’s hard to imagine these settings being adjusted on your kit having never seen one in person yet. Your model is really impressive, but I assume pretty different than the real kit. Thank you in advance,

    Ha, very interesting. Wonder why 1st mod for all E30/E36 guys is offset front control arm bushing for more caster than 🤔 . Personally I'm one of them and I like it. So far I know only one guy who run stock caster on his E36 and he doesn't want to change it.

    • @FDFraceshop
      @FDFraceshop  3 года назад +2

      Makes perfect sense. The e36 knuckle has negative displaced caster, and for drifting we want positive displaced caster to increase our mechanical trail. So in order for you to increase mechanical trail on a bmw, you would need to increase caster, or change the displaced caster of the knuckle, which an angle kit usually does correct.

    Can you tell me what happens if the tension rod body mount moves up/down? Or the rear wishbone mount on a front rack car. I don’t understand this but keen to find out please

    In short max put displacement caster and avoid abuse angle caster to keep self aligning torque and that contact patch from lock to lock. I drove two cars : one had almost no force feed back at all and a very slow self steering response. Another one was slightly better but still slow and weak Force feedback (the wheel is light when I turn almost resistance or self aligning torque.) I found those cars very dangerous to handle as you need spin by hands to make transition. No feeling, no self aligning fast enough to avoid spin as you try to go a little harder...

    Could you talk about why a kit would not move the balljoint? SLR purposely does not add mech trail. Chelsea is pretty openly opinionated about this and seems to think that removing a little front grip at big angle isn't a problem that needs solving while the wisefab school of thought (just for example) is the opposite. Really just curious what you think about this since the FDF kits seem to sit more on the displaced caster side. I have SLR on my car and love it but I don't have enough experience with displaced-caster-heavy setups to have an opinion about it myself

    • @FDFraceshop
      @FDFraceshop  3 года назад +4

      There is definitly a happy medium that we have placed ourselves in. Typical wf suspension setups are designed for super low caster like 4 degrees where ours are around 6. And my opinion on it is that a perfect mechanical suspension setup for drifting would actually be un drivable for a person, and we are playing with pros and cons in both directions to get the advantage. It could be argued that slr, although feels the best, has a disadvantage mechanically as its reducing the grip available in the tire and at a certain level of competition, that grip is needed (also many other variables from high caster and kpi). This may be a performance advantage of 5%. Where Chelsea may accept the 5% mechanical disadvantage because he has a 20% driver skill advantage and likes the feed back of the no displaced caster. This is perfectly fine, it really only matter when looking at the top 10 drivers and top 10 cars. I always recommend to setup what you like best but everyone needs to understand what does what and that is the purpose of these videos
