Red Cross handed out cases of MREs after hurricane Gustav hit Louisiana about 10 years ago. People picked up several for me and others who had bunches of them and didn`t like them gave me more. I thought they were delicious and I couldn`t always eat the entire thing. I ate them for months. There were a lot of extras like matches, toilet paper and even dental floss. A Vietnam Vet gave me one he saved from back then. It had cigarettes included. My region got hit twice by hurricanes in 2020 with no power for nearly 3 weeks.

I searched for cookers that work with my small and medium sized solar power stations. I got 350w Dash griddles, 100w DC 12v rice cookers, and a regular 300w rice cooker. Plus I got some 12v and AC immersion water heaters but settled on using AC ones for now. I use my 600w one for heating bathing water in a 5 gallon bucket and a 300w plug in for heating water for instant coffee, ramen noodles, oatmeal, etc. The 12v stuff can be wired directly to solar panels.

I usually make them by adding some water, some salt, and butter (or butter seasoning powder). Once its all mixed up, then i worry about warming it. I really like to put some in a bowl with some canned beef stew, chili, or about anything along those lines. We are happy to have found this chanel. A few of your videos convinced me that you are "on a roll" with great ideas. There are few food options available in sachets here in the Philippines. We most often have use canned meat as the main source of protein. Filipinos generally cook from scratch so local supermarkets stock few "instant" items. We experiment with side dishes such as Knorr instant mashed potatoes available only in a commercial size box. We learned that a single serving of the dry, instant mashed potatoes fit nicely in a 190ml coca cola plastic bottle that my Mother-in-law saves for us. There is room for some powdered chicken stock and dried herbs to take things up a notch. These kinds of items may also be repackaged with a vacuum heat sealing unit if you desire. We will be testing CO2 and nitrogen gases as part of our packaging to learn if this will help extend storage life. If you can boil water, you can enjoy some decent mashed potatoes with whatever canned good you choose. We did find small sachets of Hunt's baked beans in two flavours, They are not always in stock at the market so we purchase what we can when we can. The current project we are working on is a dorm survival kit for Beautiful Daughter who will soon be a college student. We plan a tote box with supplies to get her past any likely emergency until parents find a means to extract her from campus. A good supply of drinking water, food she likes and will eat and a safe means to heat that food in a dorm should do nicely. Ok, diatribe finished, now it is time to hit the subscribe button. We are watching from our "secret retirement location" in Bulacan Province, on Luzon Island, in the Republic of the Philippine Islands. Thank you big time for all you do to create these great videos.

About 3 months ago, the closest Wal-Mart to I stopped in just to check the clearance aisle. They had 12 of the small butane and propane cans on sell for $2.50 each. I bought all of then. I picked up 2 of the stoves the fit on the and wind screens for them. 2 weeks later I stopped and four 2 of the full size 2 burner propane stove tops marked down to $35 each. I got both of them and the propane to power them. You just never know what you will find. A great video, keep them coming.

I had a video posted a couple years back about shopping clearance at Walmart. I found a Mr. Heater Buddy marked down to $37 and when I got to the register it rang up at $6.
Lately, however, my local stores have lost touch with what “Clearance” means.

Great Value and Equate brand Naysayers need to remember that Walmart doesn’t “make” anything but money! lol
They do set guidelines and parameters with many manufacturers as far as portions and packaging.

Hi DBA. I'm really enjoying these MRE videos. Another possibility for heating would be to use Esbit or Coghlan's solid fuel tablets. They make a mini stove for those, but the tablets might work with your Sterno stove. You can also get alcohol/spirit burners that can go in the same stoves, and that burn isopropyl alcohol or HEET (use the yellow one). Or you could make an alcohol burning "penny stove" out of a couple of soda cans (I've made more than my share of them).
BTW I vote YES on the "Booster" item. If people don't want it, it can easily be left out. But if we DO want it, I for one appreciate your suggestions.

Nice little find. Rich coffee, yea, bitter coffee, no. I am not sure that I have ever noticed the Kerr's brand. I will have to keep an eye open for them. You peaked my interest and quickly went to the WalMart site and was surprised to see that Starkist now have some interesting tuna pouch flavors, such as, BBQ, bacon ranch, hickory smoked, jalapeno, and hot buffalo, thai chili and others. I will definitely check some of those out. Great video. I subbed.

Great video. I feel the same as you - a lot of the 'plant based' or 'vegetarian/vegan' stuff seems pretentious. Some just sounds downright nasty, too. I am also an avowed carnivore and vegetarian things almost always taste like they are 'missing something' - and that something is meat 😊. Heck, if I have one of those Cup of Noodles type soups or similar I usually add a can or pouch of chicken.
At many/most (maybe all) of the Walmart locations in my area, in the Hispanic section (which is usually right across the aisle from where they keep that pulled pork) they stock pouch meats of a brand called 'Chata'. They have a few, different options but IMO the best is called 'Chilorio'. It is shredded, seasoned pork. The package shows it in soft tortillas as tacos. There is also a variety called 'Pibil' which is more of a ground/minced pork and on the package they show that one in a torta (Mexican style sandwich). I don't like it nearly as well as the Chilorio. There is also a variation that is pretty much the same as the Chilorio except it is made with turkey. It is okay but, again, the pork version is better and I have only seen the turkey version on the shelf on one occasion, anyway. When I put together some home-made MREs a few years back the Chilorio figured in a few of them.
In the same section they often have pouches of different varieties of refried beans.
If you get some burrito sized flour tortillas (properly prepared they would probably keep for a while) and make burritos with the Chilorio and refried beans (heated - but you could eat it cold if you had to) it is actually enough for a pretty filling meal for two people - two, decent sized burritos each.
If you want cheese on it Velveeta has those pouches of cheese sauce and they have a jalapeno cheese variety although those pouches are not my favorite. Alternately, there are usually individual serving cups of nacho cheese that is sold in four packs and is often with the salsa.
Sour cream elevated the burritos to another level but that would be difficult to keep in a situation where you might need a homemade MRE. However, I have seen shelf-stable packets of ranch dressing that MIGHT work as a substitute but it isn't really necessary. A couple of packets of Texas Pete, Tobasco or even some packets of hot sauce from Taco Bell and you are in business.
I have tried the Chilorio in a rice bowl and it was okay. Unfortunately I have yet to find a Spanish rice/Mexican rice,/southwest rice in a pouch that could be eaten cold that tastes very good, to me, even when heated and the rice was definitely the reason the bowl wasn't great.
I have to say that Karr's Trail Mix is possibly the best brand I have tried and not just the one you have (although I think that is the best one). I also think that Kind is the best brand of 'fruit and nut' type bars I have had.

    • @dadbudgetadventures

Chata offers all of their varieties (also Chicken Chilorio) on Amazon, at _much_ better prices for multiples, and also has large and small cans of pork Chilorio (a 5oz can as opposed to 8oz pouch which is way too much for one meal). I also recommend their Pork Pastor.

Black Rifle Coffee, and Taster’s Choice has coffee pouches. Basically a flat tea bag filled with coffee that steeps instead of being instant. I like them for camping. Today my coffee maker broke, so I was using them to get my coffee… unfortunately the vanilla bomb instant was one that didn’t really work on its own. It needed to be cut with something else. I made the Vanilla Bomb instant with a pouch of Tater’s choice, and it was good.

Thanks for this video. When truck camping for hunting/fishing etc, I've often tried these types of items. My main goal is to minimize prep/cook/cleanup. I've tried the Walmart pulled pork and agree that it's OK. The serving size in the pouch is tiny so a decent meal would need (at least) two + the side. That stuff is cheap so buying a couple of 'em is fine. I'm not a total keto guy but I do try to minimize carbs so that "side" pouch would probably get a soft pass from me. TBH, I haven't found anything similar that is at least low(er) carb than that. Going from scratch, it's easy enough but for the potentially MRE, I've struck out so for.

    • @dadbudgetadventures
      @dadbudgetadventures  7 дней назад

The best thing about doing your own is getting to build it the way that best fits your needs. When it comes to keto or low carb you have to work harder because most of these type foods are full of sugar but some of them are perfect for it.

The Southwest Bowl plus BBQ pork looks good. I will use that idea. The trail mix is a good add in. I wouldn't go with the coffee. If water is in short supply. The water used to heat up the 2 packages would make hot tea after boiling ( or a different coffee).
