It honestly depends on the paper you're using. I've tried a lot and sometimes waiting gets you weird blurry streaks like the ink is competing with itself. Usually just cheap paper though lol
Same here! I use Ohuhu markers and I like getting a solid colour instead of some darker tones and shades mixed in. Its pretty annoying when you try and get one thing a certain colour and then the markers layer and get darker.
I agree. It’s annoying when I just want a solid color, but accidentally layer it and make it darker. If I wanted it darker I would just use a darker marker lol
Just thought I’d drop some extra info about the Ohuhu markers: 1. the brush tip markers are currently only available in 72 colors 2. The brush tip markers cost closer to $1 per marker (the 72 set is $69.99, the 48 set is $39.99) EDIT: Ohuhu is set to release a 24-color Skin Tone set in the coming days; No word on price yet, but I imagine it'll be in the $20-$25 range. Five of the colors are duplicates from the 72 set, but the rest are new, making a total of 91 colors + the colorless blender. 3. They now have a colorless blender marker (at least in the brush tip markers; I don’t know about the non-brush tip ones) EDIT: I have been informed that the non-brush tip markers do also have a colorless blender! 4. The non-brush tip markers now come in 160 or 200 color sets EDIT: 5. I forgot to mention before that Ohuhu's brush nibs can also be taken out and flipped over to give you a fresh one when the original starts to wear out, which adds a bit of longevity to the markers. And a couple of general alcohol marker things, as someone that uses them a lot (EDIT: For context, I have experience with Copic, Prismacolor, Winsor & Newton, Chameleon, Ohuhu, Spectrum Noir, Artist's Loft, Azure, and the Crayola Blending Markers): 1. You can usually see the varying tones in one marker better if you let each layer dry for about 30 seconds to a minute before applying another. 2. All markers typically blend better when you have more transition shades between the colors you want to blend; this is why the greens and blues tended to blend better in your tests (alternatively, with most brands you can touch two marker tips together to get a natural gradient from one color to the other without transition shades) 3. Ink smudging is very hit or miss. Some brands smudge a lot even with dry ink that’s made to work with alcohol markers (like the Copic Multiliners or Microns) and some don’t appear to smudge at all ever. And sometimes they smudge or don’t smudge just because they feel like it. Depends on the markers, depends on the ink. Sometimes depends on the paper, too. 4. Generally speaking alcohol markers with brush nibs are meant to be used with a lighter touch as to prevent damage to the nib, hence why most of them are very soft and flexible; it’s easier to get variation in lines without applying much pressure. 5. Pretty much all alcohol markers bleed through the paper at some point if you layer them enough. Typically though thicker paper takes more layers before the bleeding becomes a problem. (Like transferring onto the next page)
I have been looking at Ohuhu brush markers for Christmas so thanks for this comment, it was very useful. I want to start cheaper and see if I like alcohol markers, and a lot of people recommend them. You seem knowledgeable and I have some questions, it's okay if you can't answer any or all of them but here they are in case someone can. 1) What suggestion do you have for lineart for these markers? I have some Microns that dried out and I was wondering if it'd be worth it to get more if I use Ohuhu markers. 2) Is there a certain way that you do your lineart that prevents smudging? Because it looks like all/most of these markers smudge with lineart. 3) What paper do you think works best with Ohuhu markers? I have heard mixed media is good, but I don't have enough experience to know if that is true. 4) Do the sets generally have a large variety of colors? I'm just concerned because I have heard that they're randomly selected and I don't want to get stuck with only mid-tones. (I could be wrong or maybe they have a certain system to ensure this doesn't happen, but I remember hearing this before). Sorry if some of these questions are stupid, but I have looked things up and I can't really find these exact questions and the only "experience" I have with these markers is watching videos. Anyway, if you want to answer and have answers then that'd be really helpful, but of course, you don't have to reply if you'd rather not :3
@@iridescentgaming4827 I’m glad you found my original comment useful! Let me see if I can answer your questions :) (This might be kind of long :P) 1. So far, I’ve found that Microns or the Copic Multiliners can be used with alcohol markers (including Ohuhu) with minimal or no smudging by following two rules; Firstly, I usually do my line work at least a few hours if not a day or so in advance, that way the ink has plenty of time to fully dry and settle into the paper, and secondly if you’re careful around the ink lines when you get near them. For example, if you color in the pupil of an eye to be black with the pen, you’re far less likely to get a smudge if you color around the ink instead of just coloring right over it. Alternatively, if your lines are usually pretty thick, you can try just starting with very thin lines and thickening them after you’re done coloring (thicker lines are more likely to smear), or you can do your lines lightly in pencil, color, and then ink the lines. Other than that, in the words of Baylee Jae, “they don’t smudge until they do,” and there isn’t much getting around that, short of using something like colored pencils for your lines instead. (Which I have done and that can be an interesting look to try!) 2. See above :) 3. For all my alcohol markers, yeah, I generally like Mixed Media paper best. The three main ones I’ve used are the Canson XL mixed media paper (98 lb.), Denik mixed media sketchbook (120 lb.), and the Strathmore 400 series mixed media paper (184 lb. and really good if you plan on using a lot of layers). The only thing about mixed media paper is that the colors aren’t as vibrant as they could be, but it’s never been enough of a difference to bother me personally. I also like using mixed media paper as it has enough texture that if I want to I can add extra shading/details with colored pencils if the markers just don’t cut it, but not everyone may need or want that option. Baylee Jae, who I mentioned earlier, has a really good video about paper types for markers over on her channel that goes into far more detail! (She also has a video using the 48 set of Ohuhus if that interests you!) 4. I wouldn’t say the colors are completely random. For the most part, I think the two Ohuhu sets have a good variety, though the 48 set doesn’t have a ton of super pastel colors (they added some for the 72 set) and both the 48 and 72 sets don’t have a ton of options for lighter skin tones or dark skin tones that are on the cooler side. (They’ve got a few nice warmer browns though.) However, as Ohuhu has up to 200 colors in their non-brush tip markers, I’d say it’s likely they’ll continue making more brush tip colors in the future, so that problem might solve itself if given enough time. In the meantime, you could get the Ohuhus to start and build up a choice of skin tones from another brand if those are colors you really want/need. I don’t think these questions are stupid at all; a lot of this is stuff I was asking a couple of years ago when I was first getting into alcohol markers, so I completely understand where you’re coming from. And for the record, I’d be happy to answer any other questions you might have, too. Hope this helps!
@@MysticSparkleWings Thank you so much for the answers, they are really useful. I watched Baylee Jae's video when it first came out and then again a couple of weeks ago (that's where I heard mixed media paper), but it's good to hear other people having the same point of view. Have a good day/night and thanks again for your help!! 😊
I just hear Waffles in the distant: "CAN YOU PUT THE CAP ON THE OTHER SIDE!?" I like Prisma, Ohuhu, and Copic Copic is my top fav for what they offer and how well I am to use them Ohuhu isn't bad but they blend a lot more than others and you have to be careful with blending Prisma holds a special place in my heart as they were my first alchohol marker and they have seemed to up their game and added brush nibs as well I've tried a few other brands but not enough to really say yea or nah on
The thing that I’ve found about layering (this is mainly for what she was talking about with Ohuhu) is that letting one layer dry and *then* adding the next layer, and then waiting for that to dry, and so forth. Doing this will usually improve the tone. It’s a bit of a hassle though, and one of the reasons I don’t use Ohuhus🤷♀️
I was just about to say this. With the layering the only ones I havent had to wait with really was copic and that is because copic seems to have the highest alcohol content so it dries fast already.
@@lakecake8248 it depends on preference. some people like to do ink first and some people like to do color first. there are also some pens for the line work that will smudge with markers, so in those cases it's better to do color first.
ikr i have some and tried and didn’t really go like green and purple they didn’t blend well so i tried red to orange and dark purple to medium purple to light purple so u have a point
yeah, I bought a bunch over the past two years because I had no information about them and if you even leave them alone for a month the ink will eat away at the nib and gunk it up and if you don't do that they run out of ink pretty fast :(
💯 that is my huge issue with Spectrum Noir. Unless they've changed in recent years. IN fact, mine are in in a black case and only have bullet and chisel nibs (BTW, was having serious brush nib envy watching this vid), so it's possible. Their light colors are waaaay darker than the cap. I have to rely on swatches to know what I'm going to get.
Artist loft was my first alcohol marker, and I can say with confidence that they do indeed suck. After a couple months the brush nib was completely destroyed, please never buy these markers.
I know this comment is a bit old but I relate. They were my first alcohol markers and I only got 3 to try out markers. Almost immediately the nib started to fray. I only used them like 4 or 5 times and stop using them and when I came back to the three markers I bought one of the brush nibs was absolutely destroyed and frayed so I couldn't even color. And the chiseled tip wasn't far off. That experience just made me strongly dislike artist loft markers. They are not worth the price with their quality.
The layering test would've been if you let them dry a bit in between layers. When you layer them so fast like that, it ends up being closer to a wet-on-wet technique in watercolors where they're blending with themselves. To get more tones they need to dry first so it's an actual new layer.
Having been to the marker aisle recently in Michael's and then having just watched this video, I now know why the individual Artists Loft markers are NOT locked up like the Copics and Prismacolors are. 😂
@@ianl4394 Our Posca paint markers used to not be locked up at least six months ago, but they are now. Obviously, we have a problem with shoplifters. 😑
Tip from a marker artist: if you want to blend and get a nice gradient I would recomened moving the marker in small circular motions. I would recomened streaks up and down if you want to make a hair texturer. This was a really good video, definitly the best comparison I've seen.
Also, laying down the lighter first color and really saturating the paper will help blend in the darker color. I even color in all of the area where I want the gradient in the lighter color and add the darker colors as long as the paint is still wet. This way I get seamless blends even with chisel nibs and very different colors
I feel that the blending tests should include the colors closest to magenta, yellow, and cyan (“blue”). Due to green being in the middle of the spectrum of blue and yellow, you should experience a more reliable blending of the colors. Including one “secondary color” with the three “main” colors, was missing the orange and violet. Ya know? Color theory type stuff.
Me thinking about buying the 72-Piece Copic Sketch Markers: y’all are over exaggerating they’re just alcohol mark- Sees that they cost 500+ dollars: 😯oop- Goes to target: CRAYOOOLLLAAAA🙈❤️
Ohuhu: This video was made quite a while ago but now Ohuhu markers now have a colorless blender and from a 45-120 pack in brush nib markers! Arrtx: I found a 168 pack on Arrtx markers and it comes with a colorless blender so ya Iillo hue: they now have a brush nib but it kinda looks like a combination in between a bullet and brush nib so ya Spectrum noir: I could not find the markers ANYWHERE online and in not gonna go to a store for a RUclips comment srry XD Artists loft: idk 😐 I got nothing :P Spectra AD: I only could find an 80 set Prismacolor: I could only find a 156 set for 600 dollars (big oof) Edit: I found a 200 set for *700* dollars! I’m only saying it cuz it’s super expensive at least for me so ya Masters touch: I could not find them on hobby lobby’s website Promarker: I could find them under an amazon website Winsor & Newton soo ya Copic: I could only find a 24 set on amazon and I don’t think they have a website so yea Personally I think that Ohuhu are the best (IN MY OPINION) cuz they’re really cheap and seem to always be improving! Also the brand Ohuhu has a 102 pound sketchbook specifically for the markers and it doesn’t bleed through to the next page Also if you don’t want any of theese and just want a really cheap alternative sharpie work very well and that’s how I started so ya you can find them at the dollar store for a dollar and they have a 45 set at Walmart with 25 original markers and 20 thinner markers so yea :3 I’m really not trying to nitpick the video I was just updating it for people who are looking currently and needed a little update so yea :3 Bye have a good day you Bootaful peoplez :3
I strongly agree and believe Ohuhu markers are the best considering the price. If people pay more, they get good quality markers such as comic markers, but Ohuhu stands incredibly strong bc of the good quality it has and the price. Tbh I love all markers and thank you for the updates 👌
Just watching at the moment and so far this test is really interesting! I think maybe for the layering test, you should have waited for the colour to dry before you layered. That's why you didn't get much difference :)
christian marin um what? No need to be rude. She was simply sharing her experience. I’ve had it a happen to me as well the brush nib breaks apart and is all stiff it weird.
Ohuhu, the cheaper but the better alcohol. Thank the all spark they recently went in and added refills because that was getting hella annoying replacing markers all the time. Fun fact, they do have a colorless blender, it just sucks. XD
Nice review! From experience, I’ve used markers for my job for 40 yrs. I’m a landscape designer and I’ve used predominantly Prisma color markers because they out last the others by far before drying up. It’s a night and day difference they really run away with it. Copic has the absolute best color choices but what good are they when they dry up after just 2-3 designs and you have to either buy the refill ink or a new marker and they cost the most. I’ve had Prisma color markers that last a year after extremely heavy use and I can still use them when I want a lighter version of the ink. Just thought I’d share that hope it helps others who depend on a good marker for their work.
Can i ask what exactly package you use? I have never used markers in my life(only some cheap ones when was a kid). Maybe what amount is the best? I just want to make illustrated novel for my senior project.
Alison Pozo yes it might be an old video but when they first came out they already came with a colorless blender I got them the day after they came out and they came with a colorless blender
Yikes I was waiting for the Artist loft. A part of my family got me Artist loft markers for Christmas. I drew something I was really proud of. I hadn't learned of Artist loft's evil yet. The blending as you can see in the video is HORRIBLE. if you're coloring a large ish area with one color (or for my example the character was primarily one color) avoid Artist loft at all costs. You see the strokes so clearly it's painfull. It ruined it!!! I was drawing the characters from my friend's cartoon!!! I wanted to gift it to them as a friend and promo art because im proud of 'em but the devil's brand Artist Loft killed it.
Matass artezas are totally worth it! I love everything from that brand, including the markers, BUT my opinion may not be valid because ive never tried ohuhu lol
For you Copics V.S Ohuhu people out there, copics tend to come in more pastel and light colors, so you can get some pretty light drawings with them, while Ohuhu makes their markers really saturated and bright.
Everybody: bashing on artist’s loft.. Me:... I think they’re fine honestly, it depends on how u use them... Also everybody: ThEy aRe ExPEnSivE!?!? Also me:... got mine for around a dollar or so..
info from masters touch worshiper: these markers are AMAZING they layer nicely if you let them dry and blend nicely if you use circular motions. they do not match their caps very well but they do included loads of pastels. where i live they go on sale 50% every other week. the nib is as good as copic GET THEM 🤗
Yes most blending is taught in circular motion. To be fair she said she didn’t know how to blend alcohol markers. I believe she was guessing. Which to be honest she shouldn’t even be testing alcohol markers because she clearly doesn’t know how to use them. So this entire video is pretty much wasted. I can gather some information from watching it as anyone else who actually does use alcohol markers regularly could but this is most definitely not a video that precisely tells anyone who the best maker of alcohol markers actually is. Sorry but sometimes the truth hurts.
i never have problems layering my ohuhu markers. they dont layer when still wet, which helps when getting a consistent color in a larger space, but after you let the color dry it layers just fine. edit: my set also came with a blending marker idk why yours didnt? im also pretty sure the brush nibs come in larger packs than that? i did my pfp in my ohuhu markers cause im happy with them, theyre my go to when it comes to coloring
Also the amount of pressure you put on them helps with the layering, Kasey you're putting so much pressure on it i can hear the poor marker squeak. lol
With Ohuhu's, you can turn the nib around to get a brand "new" nib that way. Is now available in 216 colors. Colorless blender comes with every set. To layer Ohuhu's WAIT for the ink to dry some before you go in with the next layer. This is typically a good technique to use with most markers if you want a more contrasted shade difference. For softer, almost seamless shade build up, don't wait until the ink has dried some. Work when it is still wet. Lighter tones tend to be able to build up in more shades than darker tones (their pastel set is pretty darn good in this regard). It can vary quite a bit from color to color, so it isn't a given just because the tone is light. Ohuhu do send you a new pen if you run out of a specific color. They probably won't be sending you new pens indefinitely though. Blending with them, well, that varies a lot but using the nib to nib technique tends to be required to get decent transitions.
Kasey, try circular motions when doing your blends instead of up/down strokes. It makes a difference! This was very informative. Next time someone asks how different brands stack up against each other I’ll direct them to this video.
The way she writes online is really interesting. I like how "I" the only letter that has a rule that makes it capitalized but its the only letter that she lowercases
Honestly, I live in a VERY small town with a Michael's so supplies are crazy limited. We only have Copic Ciao and Artist's Loft available. I've had an awful experience with Artist's Loft in general, but the alcohol markers aren't necessarily bad- at least for me. My markers layer perfectly fine but I've had one marker crystallize! I opened the cap to find salt crystals on both ends... Waste of 4 dollars, but they gladly replaced it. The biggest downfall is that batches differ in terms of pigment. No single color comes out the same it seems, I've had E6 (Hazelnut) come in 3 slightly different colors.

(Which I have done and that can be an interesting look to try!)
2. See above :)
3. (She also has a video using the 48 set of Ohuhus if that interests you!)
I’ve tried them in Michaels and I like them a lot xd
I feel like red to yellow is also really hard to blend it seems like just spending an extra 50 cents for an orange isn't so bad
Least 3 I definitely agree. Kasey even said this herself, but the colors she chose aren’t gonna magically blend. You need transition shades
I was just about to say this. With the layering the only ones I havent had to wait with really was copic and that is because copic seems to have the highest alcohol content so it dries fast already.
Katina M. Yeah that’s happened to some of my friends. I personally use copics because they’re cheaper in the long run.

@@noreasart oh yeah I've never heard of them, rip
Yep. Same here! Those were my first. After a while they also became crusty, hard, and had dry globs of ink at the end :/
Same! They were my first alcohol markers and they dry out a a lot and the brush nib after a while is worst than a messed up paint brush.
Cant relate I’ve had mine for over a year and I can still use them while the copics nibs are destroyed despite me using them lightly owo
What a weird timing
Ohuhu said that They will be including a Colorless blender in every set for now on
The layering test would've been if you let them dry a bit in between layers. When you layer them so fast like that, it ends up being closer to a wet-on-wet technique in watercolors where they're blending with themselves. To get more tones they need to dry first so it's an actual new layer.
She said she had no experience... N truly she don't

@@annaolegovna1910 If I can, I try to pick an intermediary color. Light first, then blend it into the dark, and then fill it with the middle.

You should've used the blenders for the brands that have them available.
I get what you mean but, if she did it would make it an unfair test of the markers that didn't have a colorless blender.
Tru dat
Colorless blenders don’t actually help with blending two colors that much, they’re better for thinning out colors and blending them into white
I feel that the blending tests should include the colors closest to magenta, yellow, and cyan (“blue”). Due to green being in the middle of the spectrum of blue and yellow, you should experience a more reliable blending of the colors. Including one “secondary color” with the three “main” colors, was
missing the orange and violet. Ya know? Color theory type stuff.
And real color theory, not Tumblr's fetish for bloodstained hospitals.

Markers
Thank you for posting this! I was worried that my Prismacolor Premier markers aren't that great for using designing projects.

The only thing I take into account when I buy markers is if the cap fits on the other end.
Kasey, try circular motions when doing your blends instead of up/down strokes. It makes a difference! This was very informative. Next time someone asks how different brands stack up against each other I’ll direct them to this video.
