Two intelligent women from different backgrounds, each talking about their own experience so honestly and listening to each other so attentively. No talking over one another, no dismissal. Nice to see. This is how it's done.
Kay Dot I love it 2 strong women i love both these women
Thats normal life.?! Media fucks up the pre-perceived stereotype. Which stifles important Conversations amongst women of different backgrounds you coming to the conversation assuming that a black or Latin person would be angry about your question then stuff doesn’t get talked about why black or latin person comes into a conversation assuming that a white person won’t empathize because that’s what we seen on TV. this should be a regular conversation. No pre-perceived standards every conversation should be brand new. I don’t think this should HAVE TO BE SAID... so sad smh
Unlike some
And even when Ellen talked over Taraji she apologised. Love them
Two different backgrounds??? Why??? Because one woman is Black and yhe other White???
I'm nodding my head like I'm apart of the conversation 😂😂😂

As far as Grey's goes.... I find it so honest that Taraji is talking about her value in salary terms. It’s so refreshing. No one ever talks about that.
black people are real about this struggle. hellen makes 50 times more than miss hanson
Lechiffresix six Yes she does but Greys Anatomy makes buckets of money so. I personally love the fact that Shonda Rhimes is behind it all and she seem to be pretty fab person! Surely earning more than both of these ladies.
What's funny is they give so many dudes big films without showing their worth. I see what Taraji is saying but big picture they do not value people the way she is stating. It would be nice if they did but it's simply not true.
@@PHlophe You mean Henson.
I love how she names numbers. Yes!
Ellen is not afraid to have the uncomfortable conversations😍🥰❤️ I love her
er... ellen has half black kids. she had to get on board
@@PHlophe NO she didn't. There is evidence of plenty of people who have kids with a black person coming out of their mouth with crazy stuff or being in big time denial. I think they are running from those conversations or something.
Also both these ladies look STUNNING. Hair, makeup, outfits. So beautiful
They're both angels, get Taraji a franchise!! Also the idea that Ellen couldn't carry Grey's Anatomy is the stupidest thing I'd ever heard of. That show has always been about women and the struggles that everyone faces as individuals, Derek was a supporting character, Meredith is the star! If anything Cristina was a bigger loss to the show although Merder was pivotal. #Winners
I agree, Cristina was a bigger loss
That need to bring Cristina back. Even if it’s just for an episode I need more then just them talking on the phone
I soooooo agree...im still trying to get iver losing cristina! I wish she would agree to come back..even for just a guesr role. It would give the fans some closure
tbh, i stopped watching after yang left.. but I told myself grey is still there. It didnt affect me that much when Derek left the show. Up until now, I still hold onto my twisted sisters moment.
Watching recent episodes of Grey's, I have realized that Meredith has outgrown Derek and his death wasn't the worst thing to happen to her. At all

They are having a real conversation! This is #dope
Heartbreaking to hear that such a distinguished actress has had to prove her worth after soooo many years in the industry, but so happy this conversation is being had about inequality and wage gaps between women. Amazing discussion!
I’m genuinely confused- isn’t Shonda Rhimes a woman of color who runs Greys Anatomy and many other shows? Why was there ever a wage gap or sexism if she was in charge?
@@ashleyquartararo2336 Shonda Rhimes isn't in control of how much actors are paid. She is a writer and a producer, yes, but there are so many people above her (like ABC studio executives) that are actually "in charge" and have more control than any of us realize
It’s sad to know it was toxic, because those were the best seasons ,my POV.

Great interview when Ellen made that comment about white actresses not getting the struggle if someone was working more than them it took me back to the soap actress tweeting that when Viola Davis gave her speech when she won her oscar. They really don't get a woc struggle but it's nice to see they can learn. I love TPH and watched Person of Interest for her but she really was not used in that show.
This was a really good conversation

the hollywood reporter has an actress roundtable from 2015 that they're both on, its great
The show (Grey’s anatomy) did not need Darrick, the character was just nice hair. Watching Ellen’s character grow with and without her characters husband was an amazing rollercoaster. The show was incredible and believe me I don’t see it going well without Ellen and the characters lost in the 15th season.
Kayleigh Sky no Derek added a lot to the show. I stopped watching the show after he died but not because I believe a male lead is necessary to keep the shoe running. The show started going downhill after season 8 imo, it was the most fun the first 6 seasons. When amazing female characters like Cristina, Izzie, Addison, Lexie, and Callie started leaving the show it lost a lot of the humor and when amazing make characters like Derek and Mark left the show it lost a lot of humor and romance. It’s unfair for Patrick to be paid more than Ellen since her character is the focus of the serie but that doesn’t mean he has to be objectified as ‘just nice hair’ because that’s not fair and his character was amazing and added a lot to the show
I agree. There's no greys without Ellen Pompeo. Derek was overrated imo.
@@anikarahman193 For me Mark & Callie , Cristina & Meredith added the excitement with their friendship and chemistry. I stopped watching once Cristina left.

That was an amazing conversation. Very inspiring. Both women are beautiful. But that was honest to openly discuss gender and race inequality in terms of pay...love how Ellen made the point of self education. Very refreshing dialogue
I feel like this is very common. Great work for discount price. These are 2 amazing actresses and even they have to deal with this. I love both shows so much.
Honestly Tarajii was probably talking about Person of Interest. I believe she was alluding to that show about being miserable and rightly so because the show is amazing but I could always tell in interviews she wasn't fully there for it. But I really loved her character on the show, it just sucked that she and the behind the scenes creators were not getting along.
sundawg911 I’m glad you brought up Person Of Interest! Love the show, and loved her in it too. I didn’t know that she didn’t along with the producers.... or the “behind the scenes” staff. But I’ve never heard her say ANYTHING about POI.....hmm!
Oh yeah. good one. She was great on that show. My husband was so mad when they finally moved where he wanted the story to move and then *poof* she was gone.
T C Yes! They finally wrapped up that HR mess, and she was gone! It took me a while to watch the series after that, but I watched most of it..... eventually! I was getting sick of Dominic, though. Do you remember that storyline?

They pay higher taxes brackets, managers, lawyers, agents and publicists take a cut, you need security and a glam team. It's an expensive life.
Think of it like this, someone complaining about making $25an hour instead of $30 an hour. If they are worth the $30 then they should get the $30 point blank period. It doesn’t matter that they can survive with the $25 an hour
I’m living for those outfits and Taraji and Ellen are both GORGEOUSSSS ❤️
Yes, Lord. The stylist was on fire. I don't know that I would have done such a thin shoulder on that blue dress on Taraji for this interview, but Beautiful nonetheless.
They have great chemistry. They should definitely do something together.
It’s CRAZY to me that Taraji isn’t even reaching 3-4 mill for her movies...... DAKOTA FANNING AS A KID had a quota of 4 million a movie minimum....... that’s fucking crazy.... and that someone like Brad Pitt wouldn’t demand for her to get higher pay ain’t he an ally???? Gosh damn. And she’s absolutely right it takes white actors to say something. I’ll wait ☕️
I don't know much about Grey's Anatomy but I've never thought for a second Patrick Dempsey was THE lead. SS M yes, she does ❤️
I don't disagree. That said, I am a disabled actress / wheelchair user from birth. Disability doesn't discriminate. Yet we can't even begin to have a discussion about race, disability, & representation, in this context. We are the largest most diverse minority, but are only represented in the media an average of about 2 percent. Ninety percent of which is not an authentic representation. Crippin Up or Crip Face, is not only the accepted norm. Those roles are coveted, & rewarded. To say nothing of how, we are represented, or rather misrepresented. That"s more conversation than I have space for. I can't even get seen, for roles where disability isn't the focus. Ancillary character roles that flesh out the world of the lead.Teacher, neighbor, secretary, boss. producers / directors fail to understand the power of simply existing in that space. It is not necessary to overtly mention disability at all. I am now 51 by the way. Another enormous hurtle in this industry. ( yes thumbnail is me )
Ellen and Taraji definitely had one of the best conversations I've watched.

How I feel as a black woman with a college degree overworking underpaid.... Race sadly is still a factor even if you are a hard-working woman.
I read a snippet of the interview online via Variety. Ellen said she, “hasn’t been challenged creatively at all, every once in a while we do an amazing storyline.” She means in recent years of the show. The last time Ellen probably was challenged as Meredith was during her grief after Derek. Since then, regardless of patients, love stories, whatever, Ellen hasn’t been challenged. Proving that Grey’s Anatomy has to come to its end. It’s the same. It’s not growing. It’s moving on without growth. I sincerely hope season 16 is the last season. Season 15 was the first season I didn’t watch live after season 14 was too predictable. I’ve been with the show since the beginning. I believe that since Rhimes left, perhaps a little before then, it’s become too comfortable and not surprising. As for Empire, I got bored before season 3 ended. To me it was also predictable, though TpH is brilliant and deserves her due.
I really believe that season 1-12 is very good (1-5 iconic, to 8 : excellent, to 10, really solid and the drama of 11-12 was amazing). But i agree even if 14 was nice ( i didn't care for April/Ari leavin) i wanted the show ending for 16... However i've learnt they renewed for 17... and i'm afraid it's a bad idea. The show will lose people... but i'm happy in a way it's still continue because once it-ll be gone an era of tv will be gone.
sw9618 exactly.s15 was the first season that I still have not watched and I used to watch it religiously.
It was season 14 for me that I was good with watching it on Hulu. I was done with Empire at the start of season 2. I however adore Taraji and will watch anything she does except for Empire. Lol.
@@AirPlaine70 I hear you. The I truly believe now 17 will be the last.
Omg Ellen just hit the nail on the head when she mentioned how producers lure actors with a great role ... it’s the same in any industry... I’ve recently had a major change in my work place and new people have been hired at the same position as I being paid way more than I do, despite me proving that I can do the role better and then not performing at all.
Nice pivot Taraji "Equal Pay" plant da seed of truth then next question
2 of my favorite actresses!! I absolutely love that Ellen is so open minded and stands up for people of color too... and doesn’t try to act like she knows what they’ve been through she genuinely tries to understand... and tarji is just REMARKABLE in all she does! Just love them!
These two and this conversation...PHENOMENAL 🙌🏿🙌🏿 First time seeing one of these Actor on Actor videos and I love the concept
I liked the conversation that Taraji had with Ryan Reynolds for this same series. They were both great too.
She must be talking about person of interest...I love that show and when she left I stopped watching
Part of understanding other people’s (esp people of color if you are white) is understanding the privilege of being chosen to be the lead of a show because it wouldn’t have been as successful with a lead black woman. But kudos to Ellen. Love her
Lyra M thank you for explaining-it’s sad that’s the reality. surely one day it won’t be so.
and yes-i adore Tyler Perry however i don’t like that it’s mostly his movies casting the women of color as lead. gets old is all i’m saying-ALL producers should consider a woman of color for lead not about their race-but because of their talent.
lillinsey100 you do realize that Tyler perry casting black women as leads has more to do with lack of exposure for black women in Hollywood? If everyone was starting on the same foot then Tyler perry would also cast other ethnicities in his work 🤷🏾♀️
Lyra M i do realize that, i wasn’t downing Perry at all - i wish it was more than just him that cast these men and women as big roles.
I’m so weak when Ellen shades Patrick about his tv quote 😂😂
Thank you for this Variety!!!
Ugh I don’t want Greys to end after season 16, but I understand what Ellen is saying about not being challenged creatively. The storyline for her is boring, now it’s just about her love life & I feel like they just gotta do something else with Meredith!
we have until season 17 to find out if its going to end.
Yeah the something else they gotta do is END it. It’s so boring and over dramatic now
m e i mean its a drama tv series, it is supposed to be dramatic. i hope it goes on
This was a great convo, but I feel like every actress’ new favourite thing to say about their role is that “it’s never been seen before”. Like, not just here, but in almost every interview these days. Sometimes it’s true, but a lot of the time I just don’t buy it.
David Sinnott when they are talking about complex roles for women - I buy it. Especially WOC.
meredith grey annoys me so much lol (i’m only on season 7 although she’s the least annoying in season 7 out of all the prior seasons) i dunno why, but ellen pompeo seems like an amazing woman🙌🏾
