    In this video we look at the issue of the steering rack bolts failing on the Range Rover Evoque and Land Rover Discovery Sport. The issue relates to the steering rack motor bolts failing as they are made from aluminium and corrode.

    Hi Simon I was part of the UK group to force JLR into this recall. Brilliant to see you address this issue with your followers however you tackled the wrong bolts! There are 3 bolts holding the motor to the rack but they are impossible to access without dropping the subframe down a few inches. There are also similar alu bolts holding the end of the steering arm into the rack itself which is what your tackling in this video. Look at your pic at the start of the video it shows the 3 bolts with the rack off the car. You need to do a follow up now with the subframe lowered and show the actual motor!
    Also to report if one or more bolts are found to be snapped, there is a high chance the motor is twisting which will break the o ring seal allowing water ingress into the motor body which throws up a fault warning on the dash. JLR are not covering this in the recall!!!
    Love your videos especially on the FL2 and Evoque (which we have).

    Dear Simon,
    THANK YOU for making this video!
    I was forced to search the problem AFTER the whole steering rack failed as we pulled up outside the house!
    The bolts failed catastrophically and could have been life altering or worse, had they gone when my Dad was driving on the motorway.
    There is about 87,000 on our Land Rover Discovery Sport 2015 and Land Rover have confirmed that it was a catastrophic failure due to the recalled bolts/screws.
    It was frightening when it went, but I thank God every day that no one was hurt at the time.
    We hadn’t even received a letter to tell us about the recall, so your video told us everything we needed to know.
    Many Thanks
    The Murray Family.

    The bolts on my 2016 Disco Sport failed 2 weeks ago just before the general recall. JLR were excellent though - they booked my car into my local dealership for repair 3 days after I phoned them. When I picked it up after repair, they told me they had fitted a complete new steering rack. It only took them 3 hours to do the work.

  • @freelander_adventures
    @freelander_adventures Год назад +3

    Those aren't the right bolts Simon. The subframe needs dropping to reveal the correct ones.
    If the bolts come out without snapping then they just get replaced with the coated steel ones. If any snap then they replace the whole steering rack. Just one snapped bolt causes the motor to move with the possibility the belt will then jam causing total loss of steering.

    That explains why I now have to wait nearly 2 months to get my failed rear parking sensors repaired under warranty! When I booked the car in last month for its first service, I could have had an almost immediate appointment. But when I collected the car yesterday, they apologised saying they couldn't rectify the problem and needed the car back for a full day, but not until 20th April, nearly 2 months away! 🤨 My understanding was that JLR were dealing with this issue on a 'Fix on Fail' basis and not by a recall. But it now would seem they are being more pro-active about this, hence the sudden high workloads in the workshops.

    Aluminium does not rust, so you don't have bolts rusting and siezing up like a steel bolt - BUT - they forgot that aluminium can corrode and get weaker due to road salt. The steel bolds have to be coated and protected against rust (which I noted was included in the recall sheet).

    • @L663
      @L663  Год назад

      There are of course 2 problems with aluminium
      1 - it does corrode
      2 - it is much softer than steel with a lower tensile strength
      Good point about the coating on the steel bolts.

  • @jester-lester
    @jester-lester Год назад

    @simon They used aluminium bolts because they thread into aluminium, dissimilar metals can cause galvanic corrosion so they didn't risk using steel bolts for that purpose. The NEW bolts have a 'special' coating to prevent galvanic corrosion ...not sure if those Britpart bolts have that coating do they?

    • @L663

      My father in law has a contact at Land Rover , he looked up my car & said it should be fixed for free under the recall.
      He also said to mention the “goodwill campaign” when speaking to Land Rover ,
      So I rang the service department , explained the problem, gave them my registration number , & mentioned the goodwill campaign, & they said it’s a free repair, but it will be assessed to make sure that the problem is the steering recall , I was also warned that if it’s not the problem then I could be charged £278 an hour for any works carried out.
      But I’m confident that the problem is the recalled items failing .
      So I should be fine.
      Also it’s a 2 week wait to get booked in.
      My father inlaw said he’s contact said
      “ it could be driven , it’ll be extremely noisey , & they’ll be no power steering but if i wanted to drive it to Land Rover that I’ll be fine”
      Anyways that’s it
      Thanks for your help 👍

    I called up my local JLR dealer and they said my 2015 Discovery Sport isn't in the recall list so they won't book me in to have the bolts changed... does anyone know if it's just a matter of waiting until I get the letter etc. or do I need to speak to JLR directly to push them to get it done for me?

      There is no need to wait - if it needs the recall it will get booked in

    My bought from new MY17 hasn't received a letter yet - when did these arrive? To be fair I think they've been repairing broken ones for free, if you were one of the unlucky ones, for the last couple of years rather than charging the enormous fee.

      Only because our fb recall group pushed the issue with the DVSA who finally pushed JLR to start a fix on fail policy. Further work has finally resulted in this recall. It’s taken over 2 years of hard work by to two Ladies (Samantha & Dawn) to get to this stage.

    Bet LR Aus won't recall these cars..they seldom follow the US or UK/EU on such issues. Example: my LR4 fuel filler grommet is recalled in the US but not in Aus. Same car correct VIN no and same failing grommet that can cause fire but no recall here. Pathetic really.

    Here comes a video on how to change the bolts, might be helpful: ruclips.net/video/51mmsmPlRDM/видео.html

    Steel bolts in alloy equals sacrificial anode in the presence of salty water. Or it did when I was at primary school. You never know in this day and age where it is dangerous to assume even pronouns though.

      Hi Huw - I did actually think about this when editing the video... different metals etc but we have had alloy heads with steel bolts for years without a problem.

    • @themightywyn
      @themightywyn Год назад +1

      This is why the steel bolts have to be coated to avoid this. But also they should be sealed which I doubt JLR are doing.

      It has been a perennial problem on old Defenders and the lack of isolation between metals is why some door mirror arms, door skins, seat bases and various alloy subject to an electrolyte corrodes badly. Later models have a putty type compound applied between door skins and the steel frame but it wasn’t always applied thoroughly.
      There must be a reason why high tensile head bolts are acceptable. Lack of presence of electrolytes perhaps? Alloy engines and components subject to road salt do corrode of course and it is the alloy that is sacrificed.
