- The Land Rover Discovery has demonstrated its market leading towing capability by taking on a 110 tonne ‘road train’ convoy in the Australian Outback.
The Discovery SUV successfully pulled the 100m long 7 trailer & Tractor road train for 16km at an average speed of 44km/h (27.3mph) .

-Maximum permissible towing weight for Discovery Td6 is 3,500kg (up to 3,720kg in NAS (Si6) specification).
-Five-seat variant (222g/km for seven seat models)
-This challenge was conducted under controlled conditions, including closed roads and having towing/engineering specialists supervising throughout.

i think it may be more capable than discovery because discovery has 237 bhp power but defender has 297 bhp power which is more than discovery.

Not as far as you might imagine Нестор Несторов, but we did utilise the brakes on the lead truck in the 'road train' convoy to aid in the process in order to maximise the safety of everyone involved in the challenge.
Land Rover what was the max speed you guys achieved because it looks faster than what a low range gearing would allow?

Always got respect for the discovery. A gen1 managed to get our horse box out of a grass park where it had beached completely. Even though the land rover was in the dirt too, it found enough traction to pull it out in 1 attempt. Astounded to this day
not really. got one as part of a payment, drove it for 13 kilometers, sold it, engine seized and was written off by new owner within 200 miles. was a whole ordeal that lasted 2 years and cost everyone a lot of money. might have been a mix of a shitty design (which it is) and misuse by the owner, because later he bought another one and the same thing happened again.
I'm wondering of the mileage I would be offered.

As somebody who’s never been a fan of 4x4s and SUVs this makes me want a Discovery.
It would have been interesting to see if it can break all that load on its own now or it depends on the truck Driver for breaking

Whilst we don't recommend anyone try this themselves in their own Discovery, the mechanics might be disappointed if they did - as the vehicle and equipment used in the challenge received absolutely no damage in the process and went immediately back into active service in the Land Rover Australia fleet afterwards. We're glad you enjoyed watching!

Go to 01:11 in the clip when the tow hitch is in shot. I reckon they broke a couple of these.
One end of the tow rod is a standard 50mm towing eye, the other is a trailer hitch rated at 3500kg.
Love to see the "behind the scenes" video.
It may seem unlikely, but there was in fact no damage to the hitch or vehicle during the challenge - they were ready to go back into active service elsewhere directly afterwards!

No need for that. Try push normal car. One person can push car which is about 1.5 or 1.8 tons heavy. One person. And here is very strong car, and it was in low range, which gives even more pulling power. With low range in first gear it could give a lots of torque on road. It does not carry weight, it only pulls it. Mind you, it is not easy, don't think you will do it with just any car. I hope someone from Land Rover could do the Math, and calculate how many Nm of Torque it gives on wheels in low range.

The Fortuner can pull 10 lorries in total, which translates to 170 tons, since 2 from 10 of the trucks weigh 34 tons. And it pulled with smoothly. Even so, the Fortuner used a 4-cylinder turbodiesel engine, whereas the Land Rover used a V6.
So, yeah. The Fortuner is still better in this kind of scenario, in contrast with the Land Rover.

Sure it may be a Hilux on video, but keep in mind that the Fortuner is based from the Hilux. They both share the same engine, transmission, and 4WD System. So if the Hilux can pull this stunt, the Fortuner should perform the same as well.

I don't understand. It said right in this video that the Land Rover's towing capability is max 3.5KG. How on earth can it tow a 110 Tonne cargo?
Good question - there's a difference between a towing capability that we know the vehicle can sustain perfectly throughout it's lifetime across a variety of circumstances and terrain, and a one-off challenge to show the real capability of the vehicle. A good comparison would be a professional weight lifter - capable of moving huge weights when the situation calls for it, but they wouldn't attempt a record every single day for safety reasons.

There are many reason why its rated low towing ...
1st- saftey ...i am sure land rover use some kind of assistance in order to stop...may be brakes from truck itself..
2- it service life...if you tow this much weight your vehicle will die soon.
This was stunt to show highest possible limit of engine and discovery engineering.

This is crazily amazing. But didn't it need some help to stop? And how long did it take to stop? It must've been great to see this and/or to be in the SUV cockpit while it towed the 'road train.'
In the interests of safety we utilised the lead truck in the road train convoy to aid in the braking process. This wouldn't normally be necessary when towing objects in the Land Rover Discovery, but the road train weighed slightly more than the Discovery's usual maximum recommended towing capability (as you might imagine)!

Using disco 3 and 4 for towing minidigers. Comfortable and powerful. They are not free from problems ( disco 3 have some problems with tourqe conventer and disco 4 switches to restricted performance mode from time to time) but still great trucks to tow.
This is purely amazing 😍 i first saw discovery in my school as my principal owned one i was instantly in love with that car now knowing its true power i am amazed hope i can buy a discovery one day ❣️
