+starkingbiker I've still seen most of the films on his top 10 list but I've just seen more on his worst list due to the larger release that the films get.
9 of the 10 worst are Hollywood films, and most of the top 10 best are smaller hollywood flicks and foreign films. That says a lot about the poor state of big and more mainstream Hollywood productions.
Hollywood, for all the good it's done and all the great films it's given, has become a place where it's profitable and safe to churn out the same mediocre, samey films over and over, and where creativity and variation are optional and seen as dangerous. We can be very very grateful for the non-Hollywood film industry.
Connor McCartney Yes. Terrible, awful, no-good, very bad things. Still not as bad as watching Mark Strong being hit repeatedly in the face by a prosthetic elephant penis.
That happened in Grimsby, did it? Christ, Cohen really has become the British Adam Sandler: once genuinely funny, now producing nothing but crude and disgusting anti-comedy.
I actually enjoyed Olympus Has Fallen, seeing it as a throwback to the more violent action films of the 80s. But London was utter garbage in every single way
I'll say this about Dirty Grandpa: at least it raised De Niro's energy levels above the bored, semi comatose, in-it-for-the-paycheck, whispery stupor he's used in every film since the noughties.
Forgive me, Doctor, for I have sinned... but the clip of Shutup Buttwad in London Has Fallen makes it look so laughably bad that I might just scour the bargain bins for a cheap copy on DVD.
Khalid Rafi I felt the same way about both movies, but I give Dirty Grandpa the slight edge because of the scene with Zac Efron on the beach wearing the fuzzy bee.
I kind of feel bad for Alex Proyas. He really did get screwed over by the film industry with Dark City, which was legitimately great, so I don't blame him for being a little bitter.
TheHitherto Among other things, they made him recut the theatrical release of the film with an introductory voice-over that completely spoiled all the twists, because they thought audience would be too dumb to understand it otherwise.
I don't feel bad for Alex Proyas, because what he did was so unprofessional that I won't be surprised if he never makes a film ever again due to studios refusing to hire him.
Thankfully, from this list, I've only seen Suicide Squad - but I'd never felt like a movie was actively trying to pick a fight with me until I saw it. Aggressively awful and stupid in every way.
Out of all the films I saw this year: I loved Warcraft, Doctor Strange. Rogue One, 10 Cloverfield Lane, Deadpool, Kubo and the Two Strings, Kung Fu Panda 3 and The Jungle Book. I hated Nerve, Ghostbusters remake, Independence Day: Resurgence, Dad's Army, Now You See Me 2 and Why Him?. And I tolerated The Magnificent Seven, Zootopia, The Accountant and Sing.
I can take a good guess of what Kermode's worst film of 2017 will be before it's even been released -Transformers : The Last Knight if the past form of Michael Bay according to Mark is anything to go by . Anticipate a rant for that one.
Office Christmas Party - Jason Bateman is neither funny nor cute. T.J Miller dries up with too much screen time and Kate McKinnon is funny enough to save her own skin but the film itself is in rigor mortis.
Suicide Squad should of been higher due to the fact that it had a ridiculous amount of brilliant source material that it completely disregarded for a cheap unoriginal money grab
I quite liked Dirty Grandpa, only film I bothered going to see twice in the cinema. I found it odd that Dr Niro was pretty much playing a version of 'rude' Trump yet six months later wanted to punch the guy in the face. it does have some very funny moments, as well as some that go 'too far' and some that really don't work. It is an odd and uneven movie, but I did enjoy it over all. The worst movie has to be Inferno, that was just really bad. I uite enjoyed Angels and Demons, etc, but Inferno was SO bad, unwatchable really. I only stayed to the end as I thought Felicity Jones was very pretty.
I thought it at the halfway point and I think the same now: Dirty Grandpa was no better or worse than any other gross-out nonsense that comes out every year. Too forgettable to be worth hating.
Dishonorable Mentions: Morgan, The Fundamentals Of Caring, The Boy, Trolls, Alice Through The Looking Glass, Free State Of Jones, Demolition, I Saw The Light, The Forest, Rules Don’t Apply, The Secret Life Of Pets, Now You See Me 2, London Has Fallen, When The Bough Breaks, Office Christmas Party Top 15 Worst Films Of 2016: 1. Dirty Grandpa 2. The Brothers Grimsby 3. The Boss 4. Masterminds 5. Gods Of Egypt 6. Why Him? 7. Ride Along 2 8. The Darkness 9. Mike And Dave Need Wedding Dates 10. How To Be Single 11. God’s Not Dead 2 12. Ben-Hur 13. The Angry Birds Movie 14. The Choice 15. Keeping Up With The Joneses
Gods of Egypt got everything a film could get wrong, beyond wrong. The fact it is number 4 on this list is shocking and I would not touch the top 3 films with a 29 and a half foot pole
While I agree with many of these worst entries, I'm surprised Mr. Kermode did not include YOGA HOSERS, one of the year's most egregious pieces of film.
I agree with your #1 worst film of 2016! Dirty Grandpa is one of the worst films I've seen in my life! Martin Scorsese, please save Robert De Niro!!!!! :(
Jayfive276 but you have to admit it was a really shameful display of how hollywood can act when its money is threatened. To tarnish reviewers/critics/viewers as sexists for any negative criticism especially given the film was an attempt at a poorly made cash cow thats biggest PR was the Ghostbusters branding.
As with most people (excluding the angry men demographic and the easily impressed young woman demographic), he thought it was ok but not great and not as good as the originL
Yes, there are, for ex: Hot Shots 2, Addams Family Values, A Shot in the Dark, Christmas Vacation, Wayne's World 2, Rush Hour 2, Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey, Ghostbusters 2, Shanghai Knights,....
Whilst every year I do look forward to the good Doctor's Best and Worst Films lists each year, an interesting article on Flickering Myth happened to catch my eye. Writer and critic Henry Bevan discusses his own dislike of "Worst Film" lists and sets out a rather well-argued case for why they should be abolished. What does Dr. Kermode think of this? www.flickeringmyth.com/2016/12/three-reasons-why-worst-films-of-the-year-lists-are-terrible-and-no-one-should-read-them/
A Council of Elders is a fantastic idea! 😁 I think the article I linked to offers a fair argument to the negatives of putting a "Worst Films" list together and it would be interesting to hear the Doctor's thoughts on this. Let's put it to the Council...
I probably would've respected Robert DeNiro and took him seriously a lot more when he released that Trump rant video if it weren't for the fact he chooses to do utter bullshit like "Dirty Grandpa".
Nice to see Gerard Butler keeping up his record as the "bargain bucket action hero of hollywood". Still, his name on a film poster acts as a good deterrent from watching the film. #Manoftoday I don't think so mate.
Passengers, with its message that you can pretty much murder someone and they will forgive you, because pop love, isn't the worst? And there was nothing wrong with Gods of Egypt. And you should watch some television. And...
I thought Warcraft was pretty terrible. I've never played the game so maybe I was missing something when watching the film. Can we pencil the new Transformers and Pirates of the Caribbean movies into Kermode's worst list for 2017?
I'm not sure how someone can hate The Devil's Rejects as long as they know what it's aiming to be. I can understand not being excited about it but I think it does what it says on the tin, as Mark likes to say.
Best film I saw was probably Bone Tomahawk (though 10 Cloverfield Lane ran it close). Worst film, beyond a shadow of a doubt was...BLOODY GOD AWFUL GHOSTBUSTERS!!!
Dirty Grandpa is bad but it's not the worst comedy of the year. That would be The Brothers Grimsby. How is that not on his worst list?!! London Has Fallen wasn't very good but I rather liked Olympus Has Fallen.
G Spell Seriously? That scene was so messed up. And not in a good way. You know what it reminded me of? Freddy Got Fingered. Making you recall that movie is never a good thing.
I can't be the only one that looks forward to the bottom 10 more than the top 10 right?!
timanji timanji yep that's me too!
timanji timanji that's why he does best films first. The worst films are the ones we want to see
everybody do the same, we all waiting for the top 10 worst of the year
Yeah but mostly because I've actually heard of the movies in the worst of list.
You know it's a bad year when there are six films worse than a Da Vinci code sequel.
'I love Zac Efron and whenever he lets me down a little piece of me dies' Same Mark, same.
Kermode was a High School Musical fanboy. Efron has a lot going for him but yeah, recent movie choices have not been home runs...
That awful feeling when you've seen more of the films on his worst list than his best list...
Most of the films on his best list got pretty limited releases; as in many things, it's frequently not the best films that get the most exposure.
lol who cares what the dude watches
+starkingbiker I've still seen most of the films on his top 10 list but I've just seen more on his worst list due to the larger release that the films get.
"Objectively"
I don't think you know what that word means.
Happy to say I haven't seen a single one.
We can be very very grateful for the non-Hollywood film industry.
or maybe just about marks taste in movies
no foreign films have all the same stinkers but they never see the light of day here.
I find your lack of Grimsby disturbing...
Richard Bradley Naaah it wasn't that bad
Connor McCartney in the year of Brexit and Trump I think Grimsby is still the absolute worst thing that happened in 2016
Yeah...cause those were bad things
Connor McCartney Yes. Terrible, awful, no-good, very bad things. Still not as bad as watching Mark Strong being hit repeatedly in the face by a prosthetic elephant penis.
That happened in Grimsby, did it? Christ, Cohen really has become the British Adam Sandler: once genuinely funny, now producing nothing but crude and disgusting anti-comedy.
Gerard Butler had a good year I see.
The only tolerable films he has released in the last decade is How To Train Your Dragon 1 & 2 lol
Ghostbusters and Independence day Resurgence for me personally
I liked Ghostbusters
Forgive me, Doctor, for I have sinned... but the clip of Shutup Buttwad in London Has Fallen makes it look so laughably bad that I might just scour the bargain bins for a cheap copy on DVD.
Wow, what a year for Gerard Butler. And his agent.
Hearing Kermode say "I love Zac Efron" makes my day
Mark is totally correct about 'Dirty Grandpa'.....an utter monstrosity of a movie. Truly AWFUL !!!!
The worst film I saw in 2016 and this whole decade.
The Brothers Grimsby was utterly horrendous. Though Dirty Grandpa is a close second.
Dirty Grandpa is my #1 and The Brothers Grimsby is my #2.
Alex Meyer Very little to put the two dumpster-fires apart. But Grimsby just made me feel genuinely unclean and sick.
Khalid Rafi I felt the same way about both movies, but I give Dirty Grandpa the slight edge because of the scene with Zac Efron on the beach wearing the fuzzy bee.
I would add: _Alice Through the Looking Glass_, _Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows_, and _Independence Day: Resurgence_. 🤢
I kind of feel bad for Alex Proyas. He really did get screwed over by the film industry with Dark City, which was legitimately great, so I don't blame him for being a little bitter.
Dare I ask exactly how they screwed him over?
Dark City is one of my favorites so I think it's sad to see what he's been doing ever since then.
TheHitherto
Among other things, they made him recut the theatrical release of the film with an introductory voice-over that completely spoiled all the twists, because they thought audience would be too dumb to understand it otherwise.
I see. I always found that part painfully redundant so it's not surprising studio interference was to blame.

And I tolerated The Magnificent Seven, Zootopia, The Accountant and Sing.
"sorry mark, imma let you finish, but NINE LIVES IS THE WORST MOVIE OF ALL TIME."
- kanye 31/12/16
😅
Bad Santa is a masterpiece.
I can take a good guess of what Kermode's worst film of 2017 will be before it's even been released -Transformers : The Last Knight if the past form of Michael Bay according to Mark is anything to go by . Anticipate a rant for that one.

I wonder if Mark has seen Milk Money.

Is it wrong that a kinda want to see dirty grandpa? It's wrong isn't it.
Yes Scruffy it is.
While I agree with many of these worst entries, I'm surprised Mr. Kermode did not include YOGA HOSERS, one of the year's most egregious pieces of film.
I thought Arrival should have got a mention on the top 10 list, a totally unique and remarkable science fiction film
0:43 Britain didn't vote to leave Europe. It voted to leave the EU.
I agree with your #1 worst film of 2016! Dirty Grandpa is one of the worst films I've seen in my life! Martin Scorsese, please save Robert De Niro!!!!! :(
Plus, he has an HBO movie coming out this spring called The Wizard Of Lies, where he plays Bernie Madoff.
I loved London Has Fallen and Bad Santa 2 and I'm actually watching Dirty Grandpa for the 3rd time right now.
Oh dear.
No Ghostbusters?
Jayfive276 but you have to admit it was a really shameful display of how hollywood can act when its money is threatened. To tarnish reviewers/critics/viewers as sexists for any negative criticism especially given the film was an attempt at a poorly made cash cow thats biggest PR was the Ghostbusters branding.
He liked it, for the most part
As with most people (excluding the angry men demographic and the easily impressed young woman demographic), he thought it was ok but not great and not as good as the originL
The rotten remake of Ghostbusters
High-Rise I hated
Nerve I hated
Warcraft I detested
Kermodes Top Ten Bottoms ?
ChubbyChecker182 Heh heh. Bottoms.
No 'Sausages Party'??
BvS and Suicide Squad are terrible, but honestly i really enjoyed 31. I'm just a sucker for trashy horror films honestly.
Kermode even whinges about the EU and Trump on these blogs ffs.
The worst part is I'm going to have to watch Dirty Grandpa now just to see what it's like.
3.32 Mark turns into a Member Berry.
Which of these movies would be considered to have average cinematography and which of these movies had bad cinematography?
Glad I avoided Bad Santa 2. 22 Jump Street apart, are there ever any good comedy sequels?
22 Jump Street was pretty funny actually, if you liked the first one.
That's what he said, he asked if apart from 22 Jump Street there are good comedy sequels.
Yes, there are, for ex: Hot Shots 2, Addams Family Values, A Shot in the Dark, Christmas Vacation, Wayne's World 2, Rush Hour 2, Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey, Ghostbusters 2, Shanghai Knights,....
I missed the operative word 'apart' there. And yeah, Wayne's World 2 is as fun as the first.
Whilst every year I do look forward to the good Doctor's Best and Worst Films lists each year, an interesting article on Flickering Myth happened to catch my eye.

A Council of Elders is a fantastic idea! 😁
I think the article I linked to offers a fair argument to the negatives of putting a "Worst Films" list together and it would be interesting to hear the Doctor's thoughts on this.
Let's put it to the Council...
Glad Kermode left Dog Eat Dog off this list. It wasn't that bad.
I probably would've respected Robert DeNiro and took him seriously a lot more when he released that Trump rant video if it weren't for the fact he chooses to do utter bullshit like "Dirty Grandpa".
Dirty Granpa sound like its copying the Jackass granpa movie which was really funny.
Really? Dirty Grandpa is worse than 50 shades of black
I'm guessing it was because his expectations for 50 shades of black were lower...
London Has Fallen too me was so bad it was actually a fun watch!
There's a whole generation of people who only know De Niro since Analyze This. You mention his glory days and they won't believe you.
I liked 31!!! Does that make me a bad person?!!
Phil Weitzen I liked it too ! great fun.
Phil Weitzen not at all
Nice to see Gerard Butler keeping up his record as the "bargain bucket action hero of hollywood".
Still, his name on a film poster acts as a good deterrent from watching the film. #Manoftoday I don't think so mate.
Yoga Hosers and Cell are easily among the worst of 2016
I think Mark is just being petty placing Gods of Egypt at No.4. It's not a great film, but it is a fun film and far from terrible.
Agreed. It's alright for the younger audiences.
I think even kids would hate it.
Independence Day worst for me.
Pam was the only remotely funny thing about Dirty Grandpa
WHAT?!?!?!?! HE WAS THE WORST CHARACTER IN THAT MOVIE!!!! HE WAS THE WORST CHARACTER OF THE ENTIRE YEAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm not sure how someone can hate The Devil's Rejects as long as they know what it's aiming to be. I can understand not being excited about it but I think it does what it says on the tin, as Mark likes to say.
Was The Last Witch Hunter last year?
Yes.
Dirty Grandpa was trash, but it was watchable. 31 and Bad Santa 2 were unbearable imo
No, it was unwatchable trash.
I loved Bad Santa...shame about the sequel.
Max Steel is 'worthy' of the top worse movies of the year. I had to watch it with my nephew, and he, who is a fan was bored halfway through...
Wait. Kermode preferred White House Down to Olympus Has Fallen? That is just crazytalk...
Was Collateral Beauty released late in December so it could dodge a bullet?!??!
I didn't mind Dirty Grandpa, not great but I've seen worse films. Perhaps people that don't revere De Niro see it for what it is.
So Mark, a "former" communist, is butthurt about Brexit and Trump's victory? Imagine me shock...-__-
A manchild butthurt about a musical and some TV show? call me shocked.
Steven Campbell Not sure if you're referring to Kermode or someone else...
+Juangabriel Fumero I'm referring to an orange guy he wrote some book in the 80s
Steven Campbell You from the UK?
+Juangabriel Fumero Yeah.
Best film I saw was probably Bone Tomahawk (though 10 Cloverfield Lane ran it close). Worst film, beyond a shadow of a doubt was...BLOODY GOD AWFUL GHOSTBUSTERS!!!
The worst movie i saw all year was Term Life and i think i must have been the only one who watched it because i don't see it mentioned anywhere else.
You really want a sequel to White House Down? That movie was awful!!!!
My least favorite film was The Invitation. It had almost no redeemable qualities for me. Just an atrocious film imo.
The Worst Films Of One Of The Worst Years
I've seen none of these films although I have heard of 9 of them....on his best list I have heard of 1 of those films and seen...well none of them.
I like Rob Zombie but I haven't seen 31 yet. Is it worse than Halloween 2?
L Blair it's a bit boring to be honest. Not scary at all
Nothing's worse than Halloween 2.. I hate that film more than anything. 😡
L Blair it's quite a funny film, saw mixed with running man but low budget and nasty.
Was Halloween 2 the one with visions of horses?
You put London has Fallen in the wrong video. It should be in top 10 films of the year!
why?
Joe Brennan I thought it was really good. Maybe it's just me.
A sense of proportion please; Dirty Grandpa is a film I didn't have to see - and didn't... Its not going to ruin our economy
Although I thought Dirty Grandpa was awful, I enjoyed it.
So what was wrong with London has Fallen?
It was extremely predictable.
No Collateral Beauty? Ha
Alex Proyas made Dark City. Even The Crow is pretty good... What happened?
Where's Dog Eat Dog??
"not now"
damn...
Why should 2017 be better?
Uh oh, a man who has made a career of voicing his opinion suddenly starts to.....(gasp) VOICE HIS OPINION? Here come the triggered right wingers....
Haha. It's political correctness gawwwn maaad! We've come full circle.
I mean, I could understand them taking issue if he let his politics influence his movie critique, but I've seen no evidence of him doing that.
stompybeardo
Put Kermode up to what? Having opinions? That's kind of a thing most people do on their own.
+theawecabinet #triggeredrightwinger
theawecabinet "What claims have I made that are unfounded?"
What claims have you made that are founded?
Not a single Danny Dyer movie?
PS: Mark sounded like a memberberry during the Bad Grandpa bit! (or was that just me?)
He didn't do a film this year, too busy with EastEnders
Dirty Grandpa is bad but it's not the worst comedy of the year. That would be The Brothers Grimsby. How is that not on his worst list?!!
London Has Fallen wasn't very good but I rather liked Olympus Has Fallen.
movieman82us elephant scene saved it from the list.
G Spell Seriously? That scene was so messed up. And not in a good way. You know what it reminded me of? Freddy Got Fingered. Making you recall that movie is never a good thing.
no indie movies of foreign countries.. except may be French etc.
Love you Mark.
Chris Wright Love you for loving Mark
Dirty Grandpa is quite funny
I wanna see Dirty Grandpa
Trust me, you don't.
Rob Zombie is a terrible terrible director. He should stick to music.
Grimsby, Jason Bourne.
What about tarzan
Never saw anyone of these, guess I have good tastes?
Gods of Egypt looks good.....😃
White House Down was a far better movie.
GERRARD BUTTLLER!!
luckily I haven't seen any of these
my favorite film of 2016 was dbzrof
