What is Lime?
Lime is a soil amendment made by grinding limestone, a naturally occurring type of rock that is very high in calcium. Two types of lime are commonly used in gardens , agricultural lime and dolomitic lime. Agricultural lime, also sold as garden lime, is made from calcium carbonate. This type of limestone can be found in you local garden center. so does your garden need it?

I made the same mistake years ago John. I kept seeing folks add lime to the soil so I followed suit. I soon learned about testing the soil.

Glad I found this.. in the process of putting in multiple raised beds this year and I would have added lime from the get go.. now I'll wait and get a meter!

Great info John! We use lime in the yard, but never used it much in the gardens. I can't even say we tested the soil at our old place. Hope to be better prepared next year. I have tilled it for the last 2 years adding compost and garden soil but my plants NEVER produce like the should. My brother suggested to use lime and so I found your video and all I can say is THANK YOU for explaining it to where I can understand EXACTLY how to make my garden as beautiful as yours!!! Great explanation of PH in the soil John. So many people do not have any idea about it. You gave folks a better understanding. Just like salt you can always add more but its hard to take it out.

Very Interesting and helpful info you share with us John, before I'd begin asking dumb questions I rewatched the video and now all clear Acidic is 1 to 7 and Alkaline is 7 to 14, veggies prefer 6.5 to 7.0 so the conclusion here is if the soil ph is 5.5 you add the correct amount of sweet lime to get it up to 6.5. I had heard Blueberries love acidic soil, but just a few hours ago Jason Avers chatted in his 'stream, not necessarily so, they do well at 6.5 ph. Thank you as always Portugues Man O'War, liked and thank you for sharing the amazon link for getting the ph tester. Oh and btw, that TALL corn you had there, is that the Azorean Corn? Whew, coupla months ago I watched a video of a Hopi man with his corn and his is midget sized, only 3 ft. tall, but I guess its because Ankhima's in northern AZ and the Azores and back east get more than ample rainfall.Oops sorry for the long comment John, take care and greetings to Miss Dani and you. :)

Great info John. I love my PH / moisture tester. One thing a soil test from your local cooperative or ag fertilizer supplier
will tell you is potassium, sulphur, nitrogen levels as well. Well worth the small fee.

I throw a handful in the hole with the plant and fertizer when I plant to mask the odor. Otherwide my plants get dug up. The ph is 5.5 though. Hope I'm not screwing up!

I just received the identical pH tester today and tried it in my raised beds. I get a higher pH within the top 4 inches of soil and more acidic the deeper I go. At what depth do I need to insert the probe for an accurate reading?

Hi man, I’ve got a question. I have a bag of dolomite like. It says on the label that 1gr/liter of soil (in pots) raise soil ph by 1 point. So 10 liter pots need 10 gr of dolomite to move ph from 6 to 7.
I’d like to understand if DL can raise ph over 7 or no metter how much you mix in the soil, max ph will always be 7 (neutral).
I want to provide calmag but I fear to mix too much and fuck up soil ph that is already a good 6.2

andrew if your soil at this point is at 6.2 i would not mess with it much.i would add very little lime at this point and test ph again in 3 months.little at a time.hope this helps.if you have not subscribed to the channel please do.thank you.
@@WILLITGROW soil is 6.2 out of the bag (biobizz) and I wanted to add calmag at the start so I added 1gr/l dolomite lime fine powder mixed in the soil. After 2 months my runoff was 7,4 ph with an input of 6,4 water. So my doubt is that dolomite raised ph to a 7.5 maybe...is it possible go over 7? What is DL ph?
Helo there . I got clay like soil which is well over 7 on the scale in sum cases is over 8 . Drainage is totally not good . But will the lime work in my case ?
if your soil is that high you should not add lime i would add sulfur to bring it down..wood ashes is a great sulfur source
Supposed to get about an inch of rain on Sunday. Front yard needs 20lb every 1,000sqft. Should I apply before rainfall?
hello net m. if your yard is flat with no run off it's ok to apply.it will actually help it establish..but if you have down hill yard then i would wait..

@@netm203 I try to put it down on my mother-in-law's lawn before a good rainfall. It definitely helps when you have a flat yard. The lime makes a huge difference. Good luck with yours!

The PH level of my soil is 5.3 and slightly acidic, so do i need to add a large quantity to my soil?
jose at 5.3 i would not add any at this point.
@@WILLITGROW I want to grow tomato, Capsicum and habanero pepper on that soil. We had blossom end rot in the tomato we grew few months ago, and some places did show PH 4.97, 5.1, 5.3
ok with that being said.add some lime to your growing area now. for your BER rot problem when you plant your tomatoes add some calsium to the hole that will stop it.i do have a video on that.good luck@@josephponda909

you may add sulpher a little at a time till you get there i use wood ashes

hello jun if that's the case you need to add some kind of sulfur to bring it back down..wood ashes is great for that.

Another youtuber made a hole and wet it before use PH meter. I wonder...
If you add gypsum and dolomite lime to your soil, it will act as a buffer for your soil. Especially if you’re growing organically in living soil, you will not need to ph your water, your soil will do it for you. If you want to PH your water, don’t wait until it’s in your soil, get a water tester, not a soil meter like this guy has. They are much much more accurate as long as you calibrate it regularly.
Does this work on grapefruit tree that are super sour? I'm looking to find something to help make the tree bear sweeter grapefruits.
hi nina lime is just a soil sweetener it will not change the flavor of your fruits.
