  • Da P8NTRMAN is painting aluminum along the roof ridge after the gutters were removed due to ice dams. In this particular application, Sherwin Williams Duration exterior paint was used with Emulsa-Bond added for proper adhesion. This is a must for all aluminum painting applications.
    Thank you for viewing.

I look to empower you and everyone who views it with information necessary so you at least know how to do what I do for a living as good as how I do it. We are never too old to learn. The information will help everyone understand our trade and value what we do. It also separates those who have no experience with those who do. View my videos and you will know what questions to ask if you are in the market for a paint job and/or looking to entertain bids with contractors.
      If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. I usually respond as soon as I can.

      @Turner Bond-jn5yv Thank You so much for your comment. As you might see in my videos, I only dip my brush about an inch to an inch and a half into the paint. I don't wipe my brush on the sides of the bucket. I always use a pot liner, and I only hit the side of the bucket in one specific section. I am also a left handed Painter. The odds are against me at all angles. We live in a righty world but I managed to work with it and got good at it now for 30 years painting. A lot of discipline. I was also the cleanest Painter in my crew. Everyone else wiped paint all over their clothes. I always carried two rags with me. That is why I was always clean. Most of my Painting was all high end.
      Regarding Duration paint. It is still my go to paint for any exterior painting. I like Super Paints as well for all the trim. I'm not fond of Emerald. I think it's over priced and over rated. My first choice of paint is always Sherwin Williams. Second is Benjamin Moore and third is ICI Paints. Sherwin Williams is worldwide and so is ICI Paints.
      I hope that I've inspired you some way somehow. Painting is something I love to do. Happy Painting! God Bless You in abundance. Again, Thank You for stopping by.

    • @JonathanLaSalle
      @JonathanLaSalle  7 лет назад +2

      Charla Schuman , Thank you for your comment. Good luck with your bid as well. Follow my instructions specifically and you will provide a great service. Heads up, when using the Emulsabonder, the ratio is one gallon of binder to 5 gals of Sherwin Williams Duration. I also added one gallon of water making 6 gallons of product. The water minimizes the viscosity or thickness of the product so you can spray. I also used a 208 Graco Rack X fine finish tip to spray. I covered all of the windows on the side sprayed. Stay out of the sun. Work in shaded areas. Aluminum siding is smooth so your tip must be a fine tip. Spray Gun filter at medium. Use a filtering bag in your paint feed bucket. If leaving the gun idle in paint because of break pour water into the feed bucket to cover the paint to prevent it from drying. The emulsabonder dries quick. Ehen preparing your surface be generous and TSP the cheap out of the house. Do Not use bleach on aluminum, only TSP to etch the surface. very important. If you need advice let me know. This job cost around 6 grand to complete. It must be a two coat system. once you spray do not touch up. Satin finish cannot be touched up. Don't use flat paint. Use Satin finish so that it repels water and moisture. Feel free to contact JHONNY Da P8NTRMAN at jlpaintdesigns@gmail.com

      surveyguyor , I need to rnlighten you about the use of Latex Paint for Aluminum Siding and/or roofs. If you live in the South you can get away with oil base paint. BUT, if you live in an area where the temperature goes to extremes then you will have to use a latex product with the additive of a bonding agent like Emulsa-Bonder. Cold weather surfaces do not, I repeat, do not resist expantion and contraction so a Latex prodict is necessary. I higjly recommend Duration from Sherwin Williams for this specific application. View my video and you will see what I mean. Any questions just ask me here or email me at jlpaintdesigns@gmail.com and I will be glad to walk you through products in the market. Great leadup and descriptions of everything!! Really nice with the actual demonstrations too. I like also how You say what not to do and even more important WHY not to do it, The personal info/comments are appreciated too.
    I have these questions: As You rolled the corner, there is a ever so slight edge of the corner that touches the siding however that was not covered (did You spray the siding first?)
    Another question: I have aluminum vented soffit (not plastic) what would be the best way to paint it?

    • @JonathanLaSalle
      @JonathanLaSalle  4 года назад +1

      @ThomasZawalich, Thank You so much for viewing my video and Thank You for your questions. The video is long winded and personal, I know. It is my style of speaking. Most people rush through an explanation. I took my time with it because there is a lot of information to learn in such little time. Also, my style of speaking is as if you were having a conversation with me and was there with me. It is a way to embrace the audience.
      Now to your questions. Yes, I did spray the siding first. And then I painted the trim pieces with a combination of brush and a 4" quarter inch nap roller. I wanted to mimmick the spray stipple type look even though I didnt spray it.
      When painting a soffit with venting holes I would suggest to you to purchase a Krylon spray can and spray the soffit. Dont roll it nor brush it. The paint will build up in the holes abd plug the holes or you may also have drips. If you can use masking paper along with green Frog tape, cover the siding so you dont get the overspray on the body of the house. In many cases I do that first.
      I hope I answered your questions. If you have any more questions feel free to ask. Have a blessed day!

    • @JonathanLaSalle
      @JonathanLaSalle  2 года назад

      @Just Me2, Thank You for your comment. No there is no sanding involved when painting Aluminum. Just Power Wash with TSP generously at all surfaces to be painted. The TSP will prepare the surface for painting, this process is called "Etching". The additive that I menrion in one of my videos is called "Emulsa-Bonder". This product is what gives the paint its strength to bond and the elasticity to hug the surface painted therefore giving you long lasting coverage. I hope that works.

    Thanks for the helpful painting videos. There is so much to learn in this trade and it deserves to be recognized as such (a trade). What is your opinion on brushing and rolling aluminum siding? In other words, do you think one can get away with painting an entire aluminum sided house without using a sprayer?

    • @JonathanLaSalle
      @JonathanLaSalle  3 года назад +1

      @Jamey Slick, Thank You first and foremost for your encouragement. Painting is an Art and a dedication that can only be done with experience, Love and appreciation to serve others.
      Aluminum siding can certainly be brushed n rolled. I would suggest to stay out of the Sun for starters, secondly use a short nap roller, preferably 1/4 inch nap. Paint the siding from seam to seam to prevent overlaps and only paint between two to three sections across at a time. You want uniformity. I recommend using a Satin finish but you can certainly paint it in a flat. I akso recommend wether spraying or brushing and rolling. Use the Emulsa-Bonder to get the best adhesion possible for a better quality professional finish.
      Cover areas where you might drip paint to minimize clean up.
      Have a wonderful time Painting your project. Be safe always.

      Thank you for your response! The aluminum siding on the house I'm about to paint, after washing, (low pressure) has quite a bit of oxidation and there is some bare aluminum showing here and there. Should I prime the whole thing? or would adding emulsa bond to the paint be sufficient.? Also, if I do prime, should I still add the emulsa bond to the paint?

    • @JonathanLaSalle
      @JonathanLaSalle  3 года назад +1

      @@jameyslick8483 , Hello there. I wouldn't prime. I know that the tendency is to consider a Primer becaude we are all taught that. Let me explain, if it was bare wood, I would definitely prime it, in most cases if there is bare metal, use we usually use an oil base primer, however because of the fact that Aluminum oxidizes versus rusting it has to be approached diferently because of the oxidation process that it goes through. Also as I mentioned in my videos, the cold and the heat will cause that metal to expand and contract stressing that coating by streching. Aah'haaah! So that is why I uswd the Emulsabonder because it causes the coating to hug the surface as it dries and adding it to the Duration exterior layex paint which by the way, it has high viscosity, it then dries and as it cures it stays pliable, similar to a rubber coating. It stays flexible even though its dry. This is why I advice everyone to use this method. You must use Duration, dont allow Sherwin Williams to entice you in purchasing the Emerald Paint. I dont like it at all.
      Please, please follow my measurements to the T and add water for flexibility but not so much that it becomes runny. Follow the instructions.
      Secondly, dont go buy Behr paint and expect this formula to work. It wont.
      Also, make sure you wash that structure thoroughly with TSP by Savogram to Etch the aluminum. This opens the pores of the aluminum for better adhesion.
      Thirdly, you must apply two coats. And to answer your question. Yes, you can brush, roll or spray this coating. Wait a day between first to second coat. A quick tip, if you store your paint for more than a day, pour about a quarter to half an inch of water on top of your paint to prevent it from drying and crating a skin on rhe surface. The water delays the evaporating process. Store the paint in a cool spot away from the heat of dirwct sunlight.
      Orher than that, you are ready to paint. This paint job should last between 6 to 8 years. Ive seen it go 10 years. 10 years of being beat by elements, Sun, Rain, Hail or Snow and still staying together is a great investment.
      Good Luck Jamey and Happy Painting. Please be safe, hydrate, take your time and do it right. You will love the curb appeal. Beware, the insurance company may raise your premium. But your house will look like new. I guarantee it.
      Thank You for viewing my videos. God Bless You! Please let me know how it turned out.

    I understand your instructions for prep and painting Aluminum Siding. If it's sprayed or if using a brush and a roller. I figure you would prime new aluminum rain gutters. What primer would you use? I have used Kilz before. What if the rain gutters have been painted with a brush before. Their just faded and the paint and paint work wasn't very good. THIS IS UTAH, EXTREME HOT Summer's AND Winter is COLD, SNOW. Thanks, Sam

    • @JonathanLaSalle
      @JonathanLaSalle  3 года назад +1

      @Sam Martinez, great question Sam. I will explain a few scenarios.
      (1) If the gutter and downspouts have been previously painted but you have a bare metal spot yes you can use kill 2, its a latex based interior or exterior primer. Dont use oil. This is the misconception that most people think. Home Depot paint department guys will also try to push the Kilz products. I would advice you to use a Latex waterbase product. Latex is more resistant to heat and cold combos.
      (2) If your gutter is newer and came in a white which by the way its powder coated from factory. Piwder Coated means that the aluminum is electrically charged and it goes in a conveyor spray booth where the spray particles automatically adhere or stick to the surface, then it goes to an oven where it will bake and cure in a heated environment. Prior to painting you must de-gloss te surface with alcohol by using rags and wiping it. After de-glossing you then can paint it in a satin finish DTM(Direct to Metal) paint by Sherwin Williams or Benjamin Moore, whichever you prefer and coat it twice.
      (3)If you want to paint it in a different cheaper product then you must prime it all. There is a fairly new product in the market that is called STIX by Insl-x. This is a bonding primer with outstanding grip. Then you can top coat it later.
      Keep in mind, if you paint you gutters abd or downspouts in a darker tone of green, blue, grey, orange, burgundy, red then you must use a grey primer or you can tint the primer half strength to the color you are using.
      Make sure you power wash with TSP and a little bleach to kill any mold or mildew the gutter and or downspout may have. Before painting gutters and after power washing n cleaning your gutters look out for leaks. It there are leaks make sure you seal the seams with a gutter sealer sold in the gutter department. Apply the sealer to the inside of the gutter. Sometimes the sealer is silicone based and paint cannot stick to silicone. Also watch out for wasp nests when removing the downspouts. Talking anout down spouts some gutter companies like using pop rivets. I despise them. I'd rather use screws to re install the downspout to the gutter.
      I may have given you more information than you need but you akready know me. I explain details that not everyone feels like sharing. Dont forget to get yoursrlf extra downspout straps. Some people like using roofing nails to nail the straps to the house. I like using exterior deck screws that are coated w paint. Dont use drywall screws. They rust out too easy.
      Well Bro, if there is something I didnt mention hit me up for more information. Do a good job. Be safe, plant your latters securely into the ground. Dont give your ladder too much belly as we call it when its angled away from the house to far. Always watch out for overhead tree branches of power lines coming into the house. Keep 10 feet distance. I know a Painter who was painting around wires and he got shocked. Electricity came in through his hand via the brush and it went through his body blowing out one of his big toes, his sneaker disintegrated around his toes. So be careful. The Painter lived to tell about it.
      Happy Painting Sam! God Bless You in abundance.

    Have aluminum mobile home porch awning white & sellers left huge black marks on underside when moved out. Asked handy man to air gun spray it. If use your recommended products, will the paint eventually come off say in a year or two? Neighbor who does handyman work said if paint, will just come off

    • @JonathanLaSalle
      @JonathanLaSalle  3 года назад

      @Brenda Kenney, Hello Brenda, a very valid question. Not only can you use my products recommended but most importantly the cleaning procedure as well. Use TSP on top as well as the underside. I also recommend that you spray it instead of brushing and rolling. Also, use either a Satin finish or a Semi Gloss. These surfaces are much easier to clean. Everything will virtually fall off. Make sure that since you are only painting the awning you won't need to purchase 5 gallons of paint. For an awning I would only purchase one gallon of paint. Add about a half gallon of Emulsa-Bond plus a cup of water. Mix it thoroughly. Aluminum doesn't need a primer. The EmulsaBond is your adhesion agent. Show your handyman my video. Power Wash the awning thoroughly with TSP. Allow it to dry for a day at least. When dry then spry your first coat. Allow it to dry for a day and then spray the second coat. You should be fine for at least 5 years. Of course, it all depends on the elements. Paint the awning in a light color. Deep dark tones will minimize the longevity of the coating because of the heat factor. The whole reason people have awnings is to shelter the area from rain and sun.
      Thank You for asking questions. Happy Painting.👍

      @Victordepatto, Thank You for reaching out with your question. Semi-Gloss is a good sheen to use. Purchase a DTM, "Direct to Metal" Latex product or you can use a Sherwin Williams Pro-Industrial Latex DTM to paint it. If you use a DTM you don't necessarily need to prime it. Aluminum oxidizes with time and the paint will separate but you can re paint it with the DTM. It will last longer.

    Have you ever dealt with aluminum trim where the paint has partially pealed off. Trying to decide whether to paint or replace. I have not come up with a good way to remove what’s left of the paint. Enjoyed your video, best of luck on getting a sponsor.

    • @JonathanLaSalle
      @JonathanLaSalle  2 года назад +2

      @Douglas Best, Thank You so much for your comment and your question. I am not there to see what you are seeing but based on what you are describing I will suggest that you peel all of the loose paint. After peeling you should power wash all exposed aluminum with TSP. Use this product generously. It will etch the metal getting it ready for painting.
      It is a possibility that it was painted without being etched. The oxidizing of the aluminum created the separation and lack of bonding. In one of my videos I described using Emulsa-Bond. A product that I use to increase the bonding to Aluminum surfaces. I mix this product with Duration exterior paint. When mixed it creates a very durable and resistant covering that will both resist elements and bond to aluminum surfaces without the need to prime. The home in the video has not had any paint failure in 7 years. The life expectancy could very well last for 10 years and more. This combination has been a true success. It resists expansion and contraction due to temperature changes during winter and summer. This is why I made these videos about painting Aluminum. Many Painters think that a Rust Oleum primer is the best. Sadly an oil base primer will bond for a short time until temperature changes and it fails when it gets cold then it peels badly.
      I wish you luck with your project. If you have any other questions feel free to ask. In the meantime be safe, be healthy and Happy Painting.

      Jhonny Da P8NTRMAN

    Great video! what ratio of Emulsa-Bond is proportioned with the S.W. Duration?

    • @JonathanLaSalle
      @JonathanLaSalle  2 года назад

      @Gerald Golen, Thank You for viewing my video. I have another great video also relating to the Painting of Aluminum siding where I explain in great detail and speak at great length regarding the Paint used(Sherwin Williams Exterior Duration), the Ratios, the type of sprayer, spray tip and most importantly the cleaning/etching with TSP.
      Thank You for your great question.
      You will need 2 five gallon bucket to start. Mix 5 gallons of Exterior Duration + One gallon of Emulsa-Bonder + Half a gallon of water. Mix thoroughly. Cover the paint after mixing. Something I do when spraying, I add a cup or so of water to just let sit on top of the mixed paint to prevent the paint from drying. Any unused paint, I also add water to the top and seal it. If left unattended in the sun it will create a skin at the very top. To prevent that I add a cup of water to the top of the paint.
      Before spraying I would recommend removing the manifold filter to the sprayer but add a 5 gallon straining bag to the suction tube. You don't want dust particles falling into the paint. By removing the filter out of the manifold the sprayer won't gasp and pressurize quicker when spraying. If using a 600 series sprayer or greater it won't be necessary to remove the manifold filter. Smaller sprayers like my little Graco 495 Ultimate MX has a hard time sucking and pushing the product because of heavy viscosity of the paint. Emulsa-Bonder tends to thicken the paint and turns the paint into an Elastomeric. In order to neutralize that I add water.
      I hope this works. There is a lot of details to keep in mind but once you get going it flows. Emulsa-Bonder is the steroid and ensures the life extension of the coating. It is flexible for many years and it resists the expansion and contraction of the cold and hot weather. It also resists water. It's a formula that works. In my opinion it's better than Emerald. Big price difference.
      Again Thank You for viewing my videos. Happy Painting and God Bless wherever you are.

      Good Morning from New England Francheska. Thank You for your comment. It thrills me to know that people are learning, paying attention and interested to know more about Painting.
      In your question you inquired about Water Base Paint but did not say if it was for inside or outside. Please be aware and consider that you are my eyes. I cannot see what you are seeing. It is not fair to just assume and that is why I am shy to advice you.
      I am going to advice something to you first. Empower yourself with information and here is how. Research 3 local Painters in your area. Check their Star rating(very important). You can check on Angie's List. Look for 3 Painting Companies and schedule all three to come over, look at the work, walk with you to point out problems, listen to what they advice and take notes. Based on each individuals experience they will explain their approach and advice at fixing the problems. Ask as many questions as you can. These are Nuggets of information.
      After you get all three estimates and pricing then you can reach out to me with information and ask me what they mean.
      You can feel free to reach out to me via email at jlpaintdesigns@gmail.com
      Please identify and introduce yourself, make reference that you found me on youtube.
      Allow me some time to respond and then we will proceed. Painting is NOT just painting. Each home has specific problems and each problem a different approach. The Weather is always the enemy. Moisture and humidity the biggest cause. Not every primer is the right primer and not every paint the right paint. Some paints are formulated to be applied on bare metal where others are not resistant. Some Paints work well with an oil base primer and others do not. Kilz is not the best primer. If you live near a Lake or an Ocean you may very well be purchasing marine paint for exterior metal.
      Do you follow me? I have worked and Painted at all 4 Market settings. Residential, Commercial, Industrial and Institutional. Google all four and you will know what I mean. 3 markets out of the four have Protocol Environments. Every Coating specific to the environment.
      Exterior Paint Substrates or surfaces go through expansion and contraction because of heat or cold subjecting that surface to expand and contract. A low end paint is NOT formulated to resist such drastic changes. Home Depot Behr products are NOT something to consider. The same applies to Lowe's.
      Consider SherwinWilliam's, California, Ici and or Benjamin Moore.
      This concludes my comment. Thank You for viewing my videos. Blessings in abundance and Happy Painting.
      BTW, I just had knee replacement surgery on my right knee and I am recovering still. Cannot drive. Laying down and resting a lot. That is why I haven't made many videos from the field lately. I haven't worked in over 10 months. I'm going crazy doing nothing.
      Take care Ms Castro. All the best.

    • @JonathanLaSalle
      @JonathanLaSalle  10 месяцев назад +1

      @groundup421, Thank You for reaching out with your question. To neutralize the oxidation on the aluminum siding of this house I used TSP by Savogran. It is a product still accessible at Ace Hardware or a Ma and PA hardware neighborhood store. I haven't seen it at Home Depot or Lowe's but they might have it. It is a powder added to water and if need be bleach to remove mold and mildew from exterior surfaces. This product is also excellent in cleaning grease, grime, smoke, oil, soot and stains from concrete, brick, wood and it also works as an etcher neutralizing oxidation. The house on this picture has no issues with the paint job up to date. The owner is my best friend and he claims that the home doesn't have any paint failure to date. The formula I put together worked perfectly. We're hoping to get at least 10 years out of it. He paid a bit over 6 thousand dollars to paint it about 7 years ago. I hope this information helps. When power washing its not necessary to scrub down the metal to paint, only the areas where there might be moss growing.
      As always wear safety glasses and stay away from electrical wires. Be Safe and make sure your ladders are level and planted safely to avoid sliding.
      Happy Painting and God Bless
      Da P8NTRMAN 🎨

      @@MHS_ART Local lanai cage painters use Pro Industrial WBU - Water Based Urethane. Epoxy will fade in the sun. I just sprayed mine white here in Sarasota, FL, and I'll never paint another cage again. What a pain. Flashing and overspray is a big problem. If I were to do it again, I'd brush and roll and live with the stippling. Add a little Floetrol to the paint to give yourself more open time and allow longer areas to roll to help make the finish even out. The Floetrol will also help the paint settle out. Don't be too concerned with the stippling when you are working because much of that will go away as the paint dries. I stepped up and used Emerald WBU and didn't have to use the Floetrol. After painting the cage, I sprayed the soffits and fascia. They turned out way better than I'd expected. The houses in our sub-division are about 12 years old and the soffits on many of the houses are black/grey and white. I hand scrubbed them for the past 3-4 years and now I don't expect to ever have to do it again. The soffits and fascia look better than new. We laid a 4 x 15 drop cloth down on the roof up to the very edge to keep overspray off the roof and it worked perfectly. IMHO Epoxy of any kind is not the product to use in the harsh sun down here. Check with your local Sherwin Williams store and ask if they'd recommend Epoxy or Pro Industrial WBU.
