I was a fire truck mechanic in the US Airforce. 1500 gallons of water had to be kept liquid with small heaters like this. Mounted in a small box in the back of the vehicle with water tubes attached. Not my favorite thing to do. Hands on is the only way to learn how your home works.😁 Great job!
My fuel filter cracked after about 6 months installed without being physically damaged or stressed. I had to replace all the woodwork round it as it got soaked. I even cut a square from the floor. IMHO the OEM filter (slightly expensive at £30) is a good investment. Mel, if you will be exploring the subject of filters anytime, finding a cheaper reliable alternative might be beneficial for the community.
Ha Ha....Well done with the filing. Great that you filmed the kind of mistake we all make all the time. Was thinking they make thousands of those, how do they manage to get the plug in each time. I wonder how many of those plugs have been broken by people trying to change them.
You do make me laugh and I find myself talking to the screen when you didn't have to file a bigger opening but I do the same as you take things to pieces to see how they work when bust. Please keep it up.
What's it like to be a heater guru Mel? Seriously I enjoyed that video I'm also glad you got the heater working, entertaining and enlightening as always 👍
Still got to instal mine, it’s one of those jobs you put off and off, excuse after excuse..once this weather has finally decided what it’s doing and can give me hours of decent conditions then I will get it done. Mines an Erbaspacher D2 that I bought from a Welsh chap who revamps them for resale..I’ve not tested it as the wiring hardly matches and it’s taken ages to find anything regarding the set up (I know, should of asked the nice chap) but think I’ve got it. You’ve made it look not such a daunting task, so that will be my next job, I will keep all files hidden and won’t poke it too much and hope it works…watch this space, hope it’s doesn’t become a pile of ash.
Mel! You remind me of a mate from back in the day ..... he used to mend his motobikes with a lump-hammer and a screw-driver .... they always ran after his undivided attention .... He went on to become a Diesel-Fitter at a local Plant-Hire Company 🙂
Hi Mel good insight on the heater there doesn't seem to be that much to them when you take it apart glad it worked again always good when you can fix something that was fit for the bin 👍
Thanks Mel, just had this error code pop up on mine last night, thankfully I was on my parents drive at the time. Have ordered a replacement heater but have get the ignition plugs u linked and see if that will recover the old one so I can have a spare
My first glow plug lasted about 8 months and was cracked. The control unit did give me the appropriate error code to tell me though. I took the old one out before I bought a new one, as there was a couple of different connector designs. The slotted tool is a very good tip though. It was easier than the videos I watched of cheap sockets and angle grinders!
Great job Mel, that's better information than an Haynes manual, we've had issues with ours with a temp sensor failure and voltage errors but the information gained from your vlog will be useful for any future problems. Thanks 👍
excellent video Mel! your the only person ive ever seen take one apart and show a few ideas of repairing and fault finding. the glow plug seal is interesting and does show the importance of a carbon monoxide detector, as its always been said they cant leak apart from the exhaust outlet. you certainly didnt look a wally filing the hole bigger and i think you were thrown off trail by being sold a special spanner... i guess most people would have the same issue unless they split it first, but would still try the spanner if it came with it. Great job
I'm not so sure, firstly I didn't see a burn chamber gasket which is present on other models and must be replaced after a strip down plus I noticed small remnants of the outer casing gasket (the green one) still present on the casing after it was separated, I didn't see Mel remove these remnants before reassembly. The fact that the glow plug socket doesn't fit properly because the heaters components don't line up rang alarm bells for me. Sorry to be a pain but I always ere on the side of caution in these situations. John McK 47 has a channel that goes into more detail. I urge you to check it out!!!! It looks to me like the manufacturers of this unit have put more emphasis on the outer casing gasket and the glow plug gasket as a last line of defence from leaking fumes and both of these now look compromised. Still enjoyed watching it though.

Just an advisory: Some of us have Webasto and Webasto knockoff heaters and those look similar from the outside but have different parts on the inside. They don't use the slotted socket to remove the glow plug, for instance, because the glow plug is not threaded but is held in with a set screw.

Hi, did you unplug the glow plug at the motherboard before attempting to use the socket ? If not that would cause it to snap the wires. The socket is such a poor fit it would work at an angle to remove the plug as it was , off set or not. Always entertaining Mel and always my first watch of the RUclips day. Cheers Richie.
On the 12/24v it’s the controller that can be changed not the unit itself, & the controller if in 24v will think there’s not enough power & will not start giving a error code. Stopping the glow plug & pump to stop any damage to the unit, every controller is made multi volt save money for all vehicles 12/24v

I have a question My diesel heater stopped taking fuel in. The pump works and push it through but u can see leak at the heater inlet. So not sure what that could be.. could it be it runs for few minutes, doesn’t heat up and then stops/ goes into shut down mode Anyone knows :(
@@BigVanSmallWorld oh no… I have ordered glow plug as the heater blows cold air but it doesn’t use any fuel so that’s why it leaks when the pump push it through Heaters went up 100% now :( used to cost £80/90
My heater worked fine for months but stopped recently with E01 error. The next day it worked fine. The next, E01 again. I replaced solar-fed battery since it was getting on in years and is the usual suspect for E01, but problem persists intermittently. Is E01 the "appropriate error code" for glow plug failure, and could this indeed lead to salvation? See commenter reference below. I assume some component is dying slowly and have ordered a whole new unit -- 92 USD Cyber Monday -- rather than risk another Rocky Mt night without heat while waiting (and paying) for parts and fumbling for solutions, but if problem persists, what next? Could the fuel pump somehow trigger E01? I've read checking controller for 24V, but if it always worked 12V, how could controller have changed? I'll check for due diligence next chance I get; it's too cold to go outside, I'll be at the bar.
@@BigVanSmallWorld do you have a screen for a pin code to be entered? If so try 1688 this code take you in to advanced settings you can change fan speed max an min also pump but be careful as you can mess it up (just not the values in case) anyway in here is the setting for voltage change
By filing that away you will lose your seal to the glowplug..it's to stop fumes.....and You're undoing the glow plug from inside you need to file a spanner down to fit inside

I can strip mine down in 10 minutes with my eyes closed ive done it so many times, we all end up experts trying to keep these running lol
I’m no expert but I’d be up for the challenge 👍🤓👍
at least your brush worked lol
That’s about rite 😂👍
yay
Mine is doing the same thing too now 🙃
Consensus is voltage drop due to thin power wire. I'll replace it after replacing my entire unit. Sorry to give you the malocchio.
What are the chances that I am literally replacing the glow plug today!
Good luck 🤞
Is it just me or was it unplugged when u started?
Wanna sell it on Mel, I'm after a 2kw one
I’m sorry I’m planning on installing it in my van when I do a re fit soon 👍
All are 24v and 12v
It is a truck heater after all
Yes I know you would think rite but I’ve tried and looked but I can’t find a way to change it so I’m thinking it’s 12v only
@@BigVanSmallWorld do you have a screen for a pin code to be entered? If so try 1688 this code take you in to advanced settings you can change fan speed max an min also pump but be careful as you can mess it up (just not the values in case) anyway in here is the setting for voltage change

Surely you shouldn't have to do your own repairs after buying it
It’s ok I don’t mind tinkering and learning how stuff works
I’m over it Mel. Just saying.
Over what ??
@@BigVanSmallWorld Cheap diesel heaters and their weird ways. Invest in a hottie …any sort you like hehe
Spanner, lol.
You sound really 'Pi..sed off Buddy,..😪.
Really I’m ok all good thanks anyway 👍🤓👍
They are cheap for a reason.
By filing that away you will lose your seal to the glowplug..it's to stop fumes.....and You're undoing the glow plug from inside you need to file a spanner down to fit inside
