- High Ercall Hall, in Shropshire, is the very picture of rural tranquillity today, but 355 years ago, at the height of the English Civil War, more than 200 Royalist troops were crammed inside the walls fighting for their lives.
They'd already survived two bloody sieges but the final attack was to prove too much. The strategic fortress fell into Parliamentary hands.
Time Team was invited by the owner of High Ercall Hall to unravel the mystery of this fascinating, if confusing, site - and as usual, there were just three days in which to do it.

Right, as others have mentioned, this is *not* series 9 episode 8; it is in fact season 5 episode 6, Aston Eyre. As of Sept 2024, I am unable to find s9e8 available anywhere on YT. This includes the official TT channels, as well as the HistoryHit/Odyssey/Chronicle family of channels that run TT content with their own branding slapped on top. If anybody finds a working copy n the future, feel free to reply to this comment with the link.
And as a side note, Reijer, if you’d like anybody to methodically go through your videos and check they’re all labeled/ordered correctly, lmk, I’d be happy to do it, I love projects like that. And bless you for having all these in the first place (especially without having five or six ad breaks in).
This is actually season 5, episode 6 Aston Eyre. The season 5 listings seem to be mysteriously intertwined with later episodes and mislabelled.
You can definitely tell that by the length and color of Tony's hair.

Them talking about black death reminded me again of the hardships our ancestors endured. They definitely deserve to be remembered and respected.
As someone from the states who very much enjoys this and is VERY interested in it I'm bummed that y'all only took 3 days to do this. I'd love to watch an extended video on this say 5 -7 days long. I'm to old to dive into something like this but dream about being there to help discover the greatness of history.
I'd like to see this same thing here in the states.
Granted the history doesn't go back that far but I'm convinced that there's a lot of buried history here in the USA.

Every time they go to Shropshire, I always think of the old Daffy Duck and Porky Pig cartoon, "Deduce, You Say", in which Holmes and Watkins track The Shropshire Slasher. Elementary, my dear Watkins, elementary.

This show is a celebration Britains truly greatest archiaological treasure and that is boffins.
It is hilarious that the red bricks are infuriating to the team as they date as "newer" and not the mid-evil they are looking for. As a remodeling contractor I work on hundred year old homes and the brick is considered wonderful as it means "old" here in America. Ha! Old there is older than my entire country.
Lol there are plenty of people older than 100 let alone buildings
I was waiting for them to be chucking them into the bin, but they stacked them neat and tidy. And I remembered those are still 200 year old brick. They have a value. Just too "new" for what they wanted to find. :)

At 14:38 where Corenza is talking about the maker's marks, the last one she points to has 1912 in the brick about the mark and then they say it is between the 14th and 15th century.
I took a look, I think that was engraved by some inspector in 1912, there was more in front of it, eroded almost totally away, probably month and day and maybe inspectors name so later inspectors can look up his report if needed.
Anyone know if the "new owner" finished renovating the buildings, and turned them into a residence of any type?
I googled a bit but couldn't get a clear answer

Well, this explains my confusion, i'm watching an old episode. I wasn't paying attention the whole time, look up and see long hair on Tony and thought maybe this was the first episode to be filmed and he grew out his hair again. I was wrong. lol
Just love the History they find each and every episode, wish you could of visited Canada before you traveled to the USA, my family arrived in 1664, Quebec has had its own History from all sides, shame BBc did not care to discover.

This is the wrong episode, it is actually a mis-labelled re-post of S05-E06, where they build a lime kiln- instead of the S09-E08 "Siege House in Shropshire" episode.

This is not the High Ercall episode. I am from High Ercall originally and had never seen the episode of Time Team from my own village can't find it anywhere so I'm a lil bit bummed out :(

Depressing to see it is going to be turned into a modern house
This episode has a very different opening segment than the others in the series, it actually shows the time team members. I noticed that this episode was from Discovery Civilization rather than the usual Discovery channel. Tony's hair seems a bit fuller and longer too... could this episode be from an earlier series?

I don’t think this is the correct video for S09E08, it’s supposed to be about the English civil war and it’s not. Even the name of the house stated at top of the video is incorrect.

I thought something had happened to tonys hair...
that guest archeologist may have his Piled high and deep ... but has no smarts at all ... he literally wasted the dig with his education ... they would have done better without him around at all ... and actually answered the questions they set out to do instead of wasting their time listening to him

Anybody else yell to the TV "Oh shut the fuck up Tony" while watching Time Team? I do it about once every episode. Sometimes two or three times..
I try to turn the sound off whenever Tony opens his mouth. Does he really think he is amusing? Or adding to the intelligent discussion? No, and again, no.
Sometimes Tony reminds me of a little ankle biting rat terrier yapping at everyone's heels. Kinda makes me want to smack him across the muzzle with a rolled up newspaper.
