    They presented evidence that the island was once connected to the mainland, but I think that should also have prompted them to consider that the peninsula could have been significantly larger in the past. The aerial photos and geophys results showed buildings or walls right at the cliff edge, but I think that the cliff edge might have been several meters further away a few thousand years ago. The island would have been more accessible and less cramped during the iron age, making it a less unlikely place for a settlement. A peninsula with natural defences, then a bay or natural port, and a man-made fort on the other side, a pretty cool combination.

    • @Skinflaps_Meatslapper
      @Skinflaps_Meatslapper Год назад +8

      For sure, the entire island has lost a lot of land in the past few thousand years. Those sheer vertical cliffs have very little to no talus, meaning they're actively being worn down even today, and the site on the mainland is the same way. One can only imagine what it used to look like or how much more land there was back in the bronze or iron age, perhaps they made stairs going down to the ocean or into a bay where they moored their little fleet. Also, what sort of disasters and hardships did the inhabitants repeatedly endure over the years when part of their peninsula sheared off and took entire buildings with it, or cut them off from the mainland? When the land bridge collapsed is likely to also be when this island was abandoned, which would've been somewhere between the Roman era and the 19th century. Either way, I bet it wouldn't be all that difficult to gather finds from the talus of the island where entire sections of earth fell to the water, though they'd probably be battered up pretty good.

    • @riverlady982
      @riverlady982 Год назад +2

      I think between the winds, landing area problems, possibly disturbing open archeological trenches, and the daily cost of a qualified pilot with gas probably not as good an option as it might seem. If you mean to shuttle back and forth to the sight. I love watching the American Coast Gaurd helicopter rescue too and you learn quickly that even there amazing pilots don't like getting near sea cliffs at all for many reasons, not that they never have to save people off such cliff sides.

      @@riverlady982 Landing a heli with the kind of mechanical turbulence an area like that produces would make that zipline feel like a great option. I suppose it would be possible to designate a good landing site away from active digs, it's not a terribly bad surface to land on, but safety considerations and cost were likely the biggest factors. Big enough factors that just one of them would probably shut down that idea. They had the budget to hire a heli on several occasions, but that's all part of making it a good show and providing perspective to the viewers. One hour of flight time is relatively cheap at $1-2K depending on the heli, but constantly ferrying back and forth for three days would be quite costly, not to mention the crew being stuck out there if the heli couldn't fly due to weather.

    • @Skinflaps_Meatslapper
      @Skinflaps_Meatslapper Год назад +1

      One hour of filming an active dig and the surrounding area at $1-2K/hr isn't that much to cover, three days of constantly ferrying people back and forth to the island would take a big chunk out of their budget though. Plus, that's a terrible place to fly a heli, the constant wind coming in from the ocean hits those cliffs and you get what's called mechanical turbulence, which can be a serious flight risk. Adding to that, the crew would be stuck out there on the island if the heli was grounded for whatever reason. Between the wild ride you'd get from the heli and the amount of money you'd pay, that zipline looks a lot more feasible.
