For the 10th anniversary of Over the Garden Wall, I got an idea for a story last fall that pays tribute to Patrick McHale, The Blasting Company, and the team that brought us this endearing, one-of-a-kind miniseries. With the help of some amazing friends, many of whom are Over the Garden Wall fans, I produced this low-budget passion project over the last 6 months.
This is my own imagined story about Wirt; I put myself in his (mismatched) shoes to bring this fan interpretation. I don't think anyone but Patrick McHale could ever create a definitive sequel to Over the Garden Wall, which is why I present Return to the Unknown as an homage and not an attempt at a "canonical" sequel.
This is also the final short in our “Tele-Vision Trilogy,” a series of fan shorts inspired by TV shows we all love-Better Call Saul, Twin Peaks, & Over the Garden Wall. If you watch them all in order, you'll notice a thread of subtle themes they all share in common.

I really enjoyed this! Over The Garden Wall has become such a treasured part of so many people's lives. This tribute proves that the show's legacy has a life of its own - ten years after OTGW was first aired, its appeal has only grown and flourished. All the art and creativity that it has inspired will keep that sense of magic and wonder alive for a long, long time to come. Great job to all involved with this film and thanks for sharing it with us all!

Thank you! It was shot at a few locations in South Carolina and Georgia, including the North Augusta Living History Park.
Almost everything was shot during spring and summer. I achieved the fall color palette with color grading!

The film production was great and all but I felt like the voice acting for Wirt was a little stiff, unless that was on purpose, because it's Wirt.

Is this based on your undying spring poem?
If you mean the story, yeah sort of, I’ve always loved the metaphor of fall turning into spring!
And when it comes to the Unknown, it just feels right. Much like the curse of winter in Narnia, it’s the idea of the Unknown being under the Beast’s “autumnal” spell of death.
@@NovelWonder Yeah it's a super cool concept and the idea that the beast still had a small control over the unknown but wirt inevitably comes back and finishes him off
