Over the Garden Wall is just perfect in every way! There's a great balance between humor and dark elements, the art style is beautiful, the music is great, it deserves all the roses!
So some insight about the show: It's likely heavily inspired by the Divine Comedy, with the various places of the Great Unknown being allegories for purgatory and the nine circles of hell, and the Beast being the devil. TREY the Explainer has a great analysis/theory video on this called 'Over the Garden Wall is Dante's Inferno (Symbolism Analysis)'.
It goes without saying that OTGW is an absolute classic series! And it's always the perfect show to watch during both the Halloween and Thanksgiving seasons! And I especially loved the 10th anniversary stop motion short! It really shows that this series is now and always will be timeless!!!
The creators of the show really went beyond and above to incorporate the various cultural elements surrounding autumnal practices and festivals, along with the communities they originated from. In the 'Hard Times at the Huskin' Bee' they used the Sacred Harp Style of singing for the 'Pottsfield Song' and it really added a much more rich depth to the setting, even if we only got a short summary of the town.
Ever since I first watched this show, whenever I see a horse, my mind immediately hears Fred's deadpan delivery of "I want to steal." As if this series couldn't be any greater, that cements it as even more of a timeless classic in my book.
*Attempt #23* Would you consider reviewing the Redwall animated series?❤️ The show revolves around various woodland animals defending their home, Redwall Abby, from several evil factions who seek to control it. Its a childhood favorite of mine, but its a show with dark and depressing elements sprinkled in...that was broadcasted on PBS (being one of the few animated series to focus on story, rather than education).
Dear Steve Reviews can you look at this old cartoon show called Capitol Critters it has everything you want in the first episode a female a rat who smokes and a rat who loses his family and is dealing with grief🐀
Minor day inaccuracy aside, I remember watching this when it first premiered and falling completely in love with it. The twist ending still gets me to this day.
One thing I like in the beginning you see wort and Greg in these costumes but because it the first time seeing them you don't question why are they wearing those and then in episode 8 it shows their backstory explaining it was Halloween so why they were in costumes and greg being ask what he was and saying he was a elephant you can see it before I just thought he was just being random but no there is a reason he was wearing a kettle on his head. And things like that just makes you want to watch again to point out every secrets
I listen to the soundtrack every year around autumn, it gave inspiration to make autumn theme paintings and other artwork, I even made some characters inspired by it along with a character that share the voice of the opening credits song
I'll give my 2 cents on the turtles. They are a natural by product of the trees in the forest. The trees are all lost souls, as we saw when Greg almost turns into one, but the beast isn't the cause. They just happen naturally in The Unknown when some lost souls give up and take root. The trees produce black sap that for some reason, have now become a part of the turtles. Maybe it's an infection amongst their species or they coexist as part of the sap, it doesn't matter. What does, is that anything else that eats the turtles turns into a monster. Or better put a beast. The beast is probably an intelligent being who consumed a turtle, but more likely the sap itself. Which is why he knows he needs sap to fuel his soul. The deal with the woodsman was likely a way he could have someone else continually processing the trees for the sap. The soul in the lantern still seems like a silly choice on the beast's part though, so that is a hole in my theory.
This is what we need today, a unique, creative, well written, character driven and beautiful animated and composed show that brings something new Learn from this show it's a 9.5/10 show
Often a substitute for honey, brown sugar or maple syrup in cooking/baking. It can also be fermented for use in alcohol production. You've probably seen it in old warner Bros cartoons. They usually had a character like Daddy ask Bugs as a neighbor for a cup of molasses. Bugs would come up only for the cup to immediately get shot by Elmer Fudd and the molasses to drip out. Rather than freak out at being shot, Bugs would comment a bit perplexed on how he did not think molasses ran in January (referred to the cold keeping it too thick and solid) and also setting up the month for what hunting season it really was. It's usually made from sugar beats or sugar cane. As comical as it may initially sound, there was historically a great molasses disaster in Boston. It was in January of 1919 (possibly lending Bugs Bunny's joke to be a bit of a dark one) when a vat of over 2 million gallons in a storage container burst and rushed into the streets creating a 25 ft, 35 MPH wave. Apparently it was shipped in the day before and heated to make it run more easily to pour into the vat. The temperature went up abnormally that day and the belief is that the contents expanded so much it pushed on the walls of the elevated vat and just burst it at the welded seams. It apparently rocked some buildings off there foundation and killed 21 people. It was thick, sticky and suffocating. Supposedly, the incident haunted the city for some time in summers as the smell would still return in the summer heat for years when hitting the streets. It was impossible to fully clean up so the aroma would linger at these points. It likely has nothing to do with this scene in the show but since you seemed unaware about it. This story also had some similar themes of a dark and tragic occurs surrounding seemingly harmless or even joyful elements, so I felt it was fitting. No body thinking about a sweet food additive often associates an accidental man made tar pit of death.
I find interesting how the frog seems to come from real world despite being revealed to be sentient He's also the only one who took something back from the Unknown
In defense of the third episode, I think it really emphasizes the dream-like qualities of the setting. Everything in that episode feels distinctly unreal, though still governed by a very strange logic. To me, it seems very much to flow like a dream would. It's time for bed? It doesn't matter that it's the middle of the day, the setting changes to reflect what's happening in the story, not the other way around, and yet its accepted unquestioningly, like it's a perfectly normal way for reality to behave. All that made it feel very familiar in a strange way. I liked it a lot! ^-^
I remember watching someone else cover the show. They said the show was an adaptation of Dante’s Inferno with each episode reflecting Dante’s journey through the circles of hell. If you’re curious about that. I’d recommend Trey the Explainer’s video on the show.
Samuel Ramey was perfectly cast as the beast. In the opera world he is known for playing the devil Mephistopheles on stage. Check out him singing “Son lo spirito che nega” and you’d swear he played the Beast before those show existed. Also, I love that Tim Curry was in this. It was right after his stroke, but he still gave his usual 100%
Oh my goodness. This is the legend of the goat man. People jump over a fence onto a railroad and people tend to die. The legend is that the demon controls people to their doom, the beast looks like a pig kinda. The connections are there
This reminds me of a girl in high school, I really liked her, although this came out exactly when we disconnected as friends, I knew this was the kind of show she would love.
I absolutely LOVED “Over The Garden Wall”! I don’t see why People Magazine referred to it as a “must avoid”, it’s perfect! If you actually merge all the episodes together in order, and cut each credits and openings in between, you kinda get a movie with an average 110 minute runtime.
I actually dressed as Gregory for Halloween last year. Teapot on my head and all. I packed around my rock fact rock and had taffy in my pockets. This is my favorite Halloween series.
So with that ending of the commentary, I started thinking about the song Djevelens Orkester by Kaizers Orchestra It is in Norwegian, but the translation of the first part Now that you're drifting between life and death Wipe away that smirk 'Cause you don't know what it'll be like Then you can regret you lied And you'll get used to breathing smoke 'Cause down here you have to face the blows
Over The Garden Wall is definitely one of my favourite Cartoon Network shows and maybe even one of my favourite shows of all time. I’m still surprised that Cartoon Network approved this series during the 2010s, especially since this was during a time where Cartoon Network was (and to be honest still is) making a lot of random, upbeat and wacky shows catered to a very young demographic. There was no other Cartoon Network series like this pretty much ever since Courage The Cowardly Dog, another one of my favourite Cartoon Network shows. Not to mention it’s great animation, amazing all star voice cast and phenomenal soundtrack, I could not recommend this series enough.
Episode 7 was great, with an awesome twist to it! How the aunt is believed to be a witch controlling her niece, only to be revealed that she was using chores in order to ward off a demon that had possessed the girl. And the two continue living together as a loving family afyer Wirt banishes the demon. Aside from the first part of episode 3, the other filler episodes are there for a reason. An excellently passed show, if ever there was!
I thought it was fine, but hearing everyone say how amazing and great this show was, kinda had me going into it with big expectations which never got met. Opening song is an absolute banger though
You also said you would review the first Transformers movie in your face reveal/q&a and ive been waiting ever since. Please Steve I beg of you, I crave Transformers content.

18:50 Well, in some cultures are symbols of protection and longevity which could represent the two still being alive in The Unknown, and witch eating them could be a way to explain how she still around. As for the dog? Eh, I’m guessing coughing it out was supposed to mean the boys were ok. I could be stretching that one. EDIT: it also represent enlightenment which Wirt definitely was by the end, and some of the other characters.
My girlfriend showed this to me for the first time this year and I've never empathized so much for one of these animated mini series before in my life (also she said I'd probably empathize with Wart lol).
@9:45 I have to say, to be fair about the misunderstanding trope, and I hate that trope just as much. I think it's a tad more forgiving in Over the Garden Wall. Because let's face it, for her to right then and there to say "No she tricked me, I'll help you out!" and does the action, it would still cause the rift of distrust she was afraid to deal the later half of their journey together. That's probably why every time she wants to say the truth she doesn't. Also, Wirt would not, and should not trust her right then and there with that line. yeah they can talk it out, but how _does_ he know she wont do it again to save her family? Its _her family_ Wirt most likely, instinctively knew, if not will eventually know, that one would do _anything_ for their family. The only thing they boys could do is RUN from the lady who's barking nonsense about the Beast, who they KNOW they should run from. Misunderstandings are so dang frustrating, but I think this one was executed quite well.
Dear Steve, Hello! Its good to see you posting again. Over the garden wall was one of my favorites. If you are doing over the garden wall, will you do gravity falls? It's good to hear from you again! -Rosemary
Also for the train, it actively was a train to the afterlife. And the main antagonist was going to be the train conducter trying to get them back on the train where in the end it's revealed they are trying to bring the boys back to the world of the living because they weren't supposed to die yet
I think the only reason Over the Garden Wall was made was so they could have a character say “we’re here to burgle your turds”. So that is the significance of the turtles.
It's been a while since I've begged you to review Rock and Rule, so Mr. Reviews, would you consider it pretty please??? It's so zany and weird, it has some epic music, the animation is unique, seems like it'd be right up your alley!

“so with it just been Halloween” Steve says a day before thanksgiving
Could swear he's british so he wouldn't celebrate it anyway
I don't think anyone in the UK would know what date Thanksgiving is. I only know what date it is because of the Turkey Day event in Animal Crossing
He’s English
Shit it's not even a bad Thanksgiving watch it's fall show
It's still a few days way from it though
The shadow requiring the flame's light is a neat story touch.
"Oh, this! This is beautiful!"
-The words of wise Grunkle that perfectly sum up how most people view Over the Garden Wall
Ever since I first watched this show, whenever I see a horse, my mind immediately hears Fred's deadpan delivery of
"I want to steal."
As if this series couldn't be any greater, that cements it as even more of a timeless classic in my book.
Its been a while when there was a comment where they ask about you to review over the garden walls and gladly you did.
Over the garden Wall is truly a Halloween classic 💞
Yes
A true autumn classic in general.
This is my 2nd favourite cartoon network show.
This show made me develop a crush on Elijah Wood
Just when I thought I’d have to wait another month +, he’s back, my absolute fav
Love the 10-year-anniversary short. It's as beautiful and charming as the original series as if watching it for the 1st time again.

Would you consider reviewing the Redwall animated series?❤️
The show revolves around various woodland animals defending their home, Redwall Abby, from several evil factions who seek to control it.
Its a childhood favorite of mine, but its a show with dark and depressing elements sprinkled in...that was broadcasted on PBS (being one of the few animated series to focus on story, rather than education).
rewatched it just a few days ago, still an amazing series! i wish i could watch it for the first time again
Loved OTGW, had The Beast as a profile picture for years now.
Just unlocked so many childhood memories with that thumbnail
I've always brushed off this show but after seeing the reviews and explanations I'm so astonished of the story and atmosphere
I just watch over the garden wall recently and it was pretty great I enjoyed it a lot.
BABE GRAB ME A ICE COLD DR PEPPER CAUSE STEVE REVIEWS JUST UPLOADED!!!

It is a classic. I love this show. So memorable and also has a good message.
Great series! And agreed

Hey Steve could you review midori it is a really dark and disgusting anime movie
I actually dressed as Gregory for Halloween last year. Teapot on my head and all. I packed around my rock fact rock and had taffy in my pockets.
This is my favorite Halloween series.
I saw the Garden Wall with my twin sister and our older brother 9 years ago. It was funny and amazing.
Steve, Please Review Hoodwinked next it's little red riding hood mixed with a Crime Scene Please Review it
It would be awsome if you reviewed Invader ZiM someday.
Of course, It's your choice. :)
So with that ending of the commentary, I started thinking about the song Djevelens Orkester by Kaizers Orchestra
It is in Norwegian, but the translation of the first part
Now that you're drifting between life and death
Wipe away that smirk
'Cause you don't know what it'll be like
Then you can regret you lied
And you'll get used to breathing smoke
'Cause down here you have to face the blows
Over The Garden Wall is definitely one of my favourite Cartoon Network shows and maybe even one of my favourite shows of all time. 🎉 Back welcome man 🎉 we miss you so much
I should watch this cartoon one day.
I like dark stuff
I hope to see more dark cartoons shows on this channel.
I thought it was fine, but hearing everyone say how amazing and great this show was, kinda had me going into it with big expectations which never got met. Opening song is an absolute banger though
Please check out another Ralph Bakshi movie!
Love to see you do a video review on Infinity Train which is another Cartoon Network masterpiece!
There's a video from Trey the Explainer I always liked that went over how the show follows Dante's Inferno.
You also said you would review the first Transformers movie in your face reveal/q&a and ive been waiting ever since. Please Steve I beg of you, I crave Transformers content.

I introduced my girlfriend to Gravity Falls a couple years ago, so naturally she introduced me to this show this past October. Boy am I glad she did!
9:26 Adelaide was voiced by British actor and comedian John Cleese
My girlfriend showed this to me for the first time this year and I've never empathized so much for one of these animated mini series before in my life (also she said I'd probably empathize with Wart lol).
Idk why but this reminds me of centaur world. Might be a good one to review. It’s got these light colors but has a kinda dark but beautiful message.
Can you do breadwinner!?
Molasses is apparently called "treacle" in the UK. US calls it molasses.
Over the garden wall is the best autumn show
@9:45 I have to say, to be fair about the misunderstanding trope, and I hate that trope just as much.
Just wait until Steve finds out about the molasses disaster
Dear Steve,
Hello! Its good to see you posting again.
Over the garden wall was one of my favorites.
If you are doing over the garden wall, will you do gravity falls?
It's good to hear from you again!

Ngl, the little kid killed any enjoyment for me. He's a flanderized Mabel for the entire run.
I actually feel like both dubs between Arabic and English are fit very well ❤
The song when greg is getting ripped from the adelwood is potatoes and molasses but in latin
A classic
Love this!!!!
I love over the garden wall
Fun fact, pots field is based on a potter field aka a mass grave
Also for the train, it actively was a train to the afterlife. And the main antagonist was going to be the train conducter trying to get them back on the train where in the end it's revealed they are trying to bring the boys back to the world of the living because they weren't supposed to die yet
I would like Steve to review the 2009 Astro Boy next pls as that film is 15 years old and it deserves to be shown again.
This is the best show ❤
I think the only reason Over the Garden Wall was made was so they could have a character say “we’re here to burgle your turds”. So that is the significance of the turtles.
Review Meet The FEEBLES, please
Yes that film is really dark
Would anyone like to see the anime Code Geass or Gate on here?
Episode 3 being the weak point in the series is also what I thought... 10 years ago. The episode is fun.
Well I honestly enjoyed Over The Garden Wall myself, and since you mentioned some of the other Cartoon Network shows, could you do Regular Show if so
I think the Beast in this show is the best adaptation of Sauron despite not even being Sauron.
Just watched the video. It's amazing.
yooo,it's been a minute,where have you been?
It's been a while since I've begged you to review Rock and Rule, so Mr. Reviews, would you consider it pretty please??? It's so zany and weird, it has some epic music, the animation is unique, seems like it'd be right up your alley!
The scariest part of this whole video is the fact that Steve didn’t know what molasses was.
16:45 also voiced by John Cleese
Here’s a fun fact: the creator said he took inspiration from Dante’s Inferno.
