- Tony nominee Andy Karl, Barrett Doss, and company performed "Seeing You" from Groundhog Day The Musical at the 2017 Tony Awards.
Karl stars in the musical adaptation of the beloved 1993 movie, which starred Bill Murray as a Phil Connors, a misanthropic weatherman who gets caught in a time loop, replaying the same day over and over until he softens his cynical demeanor and gets closer to Rita, an associate TV producer played by Barrett Doss.
The Broadway show reunites much of the key creative team from Matilda: director Matthew Warchus, composer-lyricist Tim Minchin, choreographer Peter Darling and designer Rob Howell. The book is by Danny Rubin, who co-wrote the Columbia Pictures film's screenplay with its director Harold Ramis, based on Rubin's story.
The musical received 7 Tony nominations including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical: Danny Rubin, Best Original Score: Tim Minchin, Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical: Andy Karl, Best Scenic Design of a Musical: Rob Howell, Best Direction of a Musical: Matthew Warchus and Best Choreography: Peter Darling and Ellen Kane.
Groundhog Day was an absolutely magical show and it deserved so much better. So glad I got to see it during its tragically short run.
Agreed. This needed more of a chance. Love this song. Wish I could've seen the show.
Love this song. Wish it was longer.
And then it got announced to be returning!
Just saw it in London. It's stunningly beautiful and funny
Saw it in London and it got extended and exetended until they ran out of dates they could run at the theatre. Love it’s now in Australia and hoping the next news is a uk tour. The show was so amazing and I really wish I could see it again.
Gosh… this was the best musical that year. This and Come From Away. And both shows really worked best as a journey from start to finish that a Tony performance couldn’t really capture. But Groundhog Day was just a masterpiece in writing and lyrics and Andy Karl’s performance was understated, sarcastic, and by the end of the journey genuinely moving. No gimmicks of “look how high he can sing while snot it coming out his nose” just a honest portrayal of a shitty human who is transformed over the course of the evening.
Although lots of people didn't like this song as the Tony performance, I think it was a beautiful choice and I will never stop loving it #longliveGHD
I love the song. I did think it was odd to show the grand finale song on the Tony Awards, but it’s not as if everyone didn’t already know the way the story ended.
I think I they would've performed philanthropy alot more people would have given Ghd a chance
This performance feels so genuine and sincere that it’s actually sweating my eyessss
They should've done 'One Day'. 🥰 This is like... their FINAL number from the show.
It's a shame Dear Evan Hansen over shadowed literally every other show this season. The fact that its taken me YEARS to finally appreciate all the other original shows from this year really says a lot. (Then again, i was 14 and new intp musical theater, its no surprise i didnt care about much else.) The 2017 Tony's were a tragedy indeed.
I'm a huge fan of DEH but I think Groundhog Day blows it out of the water in almost every aspect
omG THIS IS THE CLOSEST THING ILL EVER GET TO WATCHING THE REAL SHOW

Andy Carl: "I spent a lifetime seeking signs reading lines... Ah Fuck! I've fucked it! I fucked up the lyrics! I can't go on with that coz it doesn't mean what it needs to mean to me to sing it. They wouldn't notice it, but I can't bear it. I'm going to have to start the whole song again!"
True Tim Minchin fans will understand.
Come From Away sang their first song and Groundhog Day sang their last song. Wow. I can see a pattern
Dear Evan Hansen sung their Second
Great Comet sung their showstopper.
And Bandstand sung the last.
I heard this show is coming back to London where it began and this news makes me happy. I saw it once in London and once on Broadway and enjoyed it. Also, Barrett's a babe. I love her on Station 19.
Best musical I've seen- was lucky enough to see it at the Old Vic on London...hope it comes back soon
Coming back to old vic this summer. Just bought my ticket
@@k8bond me too!
- I saw it in London last summer, and it was absolutely magical 🫶🏼🥰😍❣️❣️❣️
That's like a spoiler alert for the entire musical
So is watching the movie. Honestly when it's based on something as popular as groundhog Day you don't worry about spoilers
Everyone and their mothers have seen the movie by now, everyone knows the plot, it's too popular.
It's a spoiler that the love interests get together in a musical... He literally only has one option and it's a MUSICAL
I miss this show so much. It's about time someone uploaded this! It's so heartwarming to see everyone on stage altogether. I miss this cast so much.
At 4:35 you can see Jeff introduce his (supposed) boyfriend to his dad :)

1:50 to skip to performance
Thank u
i miss this musical so much
So so so sweet
1:47 actual performance
THANK YOU FOR UPLOADING ALL OF THESE BLESS UR SOUL
Oh wow there he is
see that woman at the end crying? That’s me
Thank you for uploading! I saw this show the night before the Tony's and it was really great!
way too much Kevin Spacey at the beginning of this vom
That is ultra clear in 2021
Even though he's a horrible person that beginning was pretty funny tho
It’s weird seeing barret doss like this and not like acting in station 19
Is it just me or do Andy Karl and Hugh Jackman sound really alike?
Andy Karl has so much more power in his voice and doesn't have an intolerable vibrato
This is such a tonal departure from one of the greatest movies of all time.
It works in the context of the show - the show nails the spirit of the movie
This show was robbed.
this is such a good performance in general, but it kinda annoys me how andy karl overperforms and tries to outshine barrett and company, like bro we get it, you're performing at the tony's and you wanna make a good impression but this isnt the way to do it by standing on top of others. You can kinda see it in barrett's face like dude what are you doing and she was performing it as intended so she was really good and solid but compared to him trying to rise above and doing outlandish runs, he unfortunately, pushed her into the shadows, my ears always gravitate towards barrett's voice, but he stood in the way of that this performance :(
I think he deserves to go all out on the Tony's, after all the shit he had to go through during the show and then not winning a tony he can do whatever tf he wants
bro let the man have fun at the tonys
I don’t think he was trying to overpower them. I think his mic was turned way up.
Yeah. Terrible mixing job, as is unfortunately pretty common for the Tonys. Andy just happens to have a louder voice, and the audio engineer isn't doing their job and matching them.
Its a pleasure to see Kevin Spacey again. Yeah sure, controversial issues aside, he is still one of my favorite actors. This impression was very good.
