William het geweldig wat jij doet. 40 jaar terug ben ik ook met bluegrass banjo bezig geweest. Ben nu 73 jaar en weer opnieuw begonnen met de banjo. Jouw filmpjes zijn geweldig!! Hartelijk dank hiervoor. Blijf spelen. Groeten uit Nederland. Leo.
You've no idea how you've helped me to develop my playing. These are truly excellent tutorials - I live in England where there are relatively few banjo players so I've never had a proper teacher. Thank you so much!
Hey Willie, your 110% right anything is fair game when playing the banjo as long as it makes sense. Your version of dueling banjo is by far the best I've heard especially for a beginner. I know everyone should have there own opinion but the 105 dislikes are just plain ignorant. You deserve so much better than that for tring to teach someone how to play a tune like Dueling Banjos. I'm a beginning Banjo player myself, just been at it for 3 weeks and already can play that tune. Not well, but can play it. At 67 and never playing a string instrument before I'm not doing to bad. Please keep putting out your version of any song you like. I promise I'll watch and listen and learn. Thanks again Phil
love the way you teach. im 50+ only been pickin 2yrs. your vids have helped me more than all the others ive watched combined. straight & simple here's how u do it. thats what i need. thank you!
Hi I am from Macau China. 59 years old. always loved the sound of the Banjo but never learned it. I do play guitar and mandolin. Had a 4 string banjo when I was a kid (my grandfathers) but never figured out how to play it. My kids bought me a 5 string banjo for fathers day this year. So I have been working at learning for about 4 months now. I love your teaching videos. Like others have said, you do the best teaching on the web. I do play guitar semi professionally, and I play a Chinese instrument called the PiPa, but your teaching is some of the best anywhere out there. Thank you.
Been playing guitar for over 40 yrs.. from rock to progressive to jazz. I’d like to think that I’m maturing as a musician, I hope. Started to learn banjo about a year ago. Your teaching is awesome. Thank you.
this is the first time i've ever read tabs. always dismissed them before as some crazy foreign language and had to learn by memorization. i'm at a decent enough baseline now and it just made sense to me. could read along as i played. thank you man, it's feels like a crazy breakthrough.
hey, bill. I've had a banjo for only about 3 days (since Christmas morning), but I've been interested in learning the instrument for a little over half a year. dueling banjos always seemed really hard to me, even the beginning part. I'm 21 and my dad has been pushing me to learn guitar since I can remember, but it never really stuck. as I'm typing this I just got comfortable with the first little lick and am about to move on to the second one, but just being able to play that blows my mind. as someone who has never been able to play an instrument being able to play anything other than the simple E string smoke on the water really blows my mind. I've been browsing lessons on youtube for a couple of days but you're the first one that stuck and actually helped me play something that sounds good and I can be proud of. It really helps take away the fear of "I'm never going to figure this out it's too hard" so thank you so much for helping me get past that. i cant wait for my journey with this amazing instrument and ill be checking out your channel after I practice a bit more.
By far the best and most complete lesson that I found on that tune! Awesome job explaining and having the tabs right there synced as one learn the licks. Thank-you so much!
This is an amazing video! I love that you don't charge for the videos or the tabs. You're obviously just doing this for fun and trying to help other people. This video was very easy to follow and well worth the watch. And you sound like you should be narrating a movie like oh brother where art thou or something like that. 👍🏼 keep the videos coming!
Actually I use these videos so I can point my students to a link rather than trying to email them a 20 or 30 MB movie. So I'm not all sweetness and light... just mostly.
you give the best lessons of any musical instrument on RUclips. you ought to win a RUclips award if that is a thing. you've changed my life and many others by giving us the gift of banjo this is for real!
Thanks for putting this up! It's very easy to follow along, and I appreciate you going step by step slowly. The tabs on screen while you play really helped me figure it out. I'm brand new to the banjo, and this was by far the easiest instructional video to follow I've found. Thank you again!
Thanks for teaching. I recntly bought a banjo and learned how to hold tune and read tablature from another video I really wanted to play this song I've only gotten 8 minutes but reading tab and watching has helped
Thank you William. Loved this tune since a kid, but always thought it was way out of my league. But with your excellent guidance and lots of practice. I can for the first time say I am slowly on my way to cracking this great tune.
Excellent, I'm not a beginner but like to re visit this tune now and again for some refreshing new takes on the licks, and its helped me to simplify my version and make it less 'clunky';.....cheers and thanks for this Will.
Thank you for this. By far best explainer video on this song so far. Gonna tackle it as a fun surprise for my in laws when they come visit from Florida in July.... my brother in law plays steel string guitar... should be fun!
Hi Bill. Your teaching has brought my playing on so much. I've always wanted to play this song. Is there any chance you could upload a video playing it at full speed? The full speed versions as in your other videos help me put it all together. Thank you so much for your lessons.
Hi BIll. You are an amazing instructor. Your instructions are very thorough and calm and your voice is almost soothing. I am actually getting somewhere following your instructions, where I was ready to give up previously. You are the best. Thank you
Hi William - Thanks for sharing this VERY detailed instruction for how to play the banjo on this song. I have only been playing the banjo for a month and I am half way through this song. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and your time! Really appreciate it!
Merlyn Schutterle because they can’t play it and Bill makes it look easy and sound good .. and it is .. perhaps those ones should know the the thumbs up . If you can’t say a thumbs up good . Perhaps one shouldn’t say a nothing thumbs atall ... those ones most likely play a banjo like a dog a walkin on its hind legs... It ain’t pretty , and just as ugly ..
Dueling Banjos was created and arranged by Harry S. Turner (Florence SC), my Uncle, back when he was playing with Authur Smith in the early 30s.. Authur Wrote the music down. Harry couldn't read or write, as he was completely illiterate, but was a master musician. Mandolin, Banjo, Guitar, Fiddle, Piano, Trumpet, and 12 Pedal Steel Guitar master. He could play anything. Harry didn't care if anyone played his music. He also wrote and arranged most of the music used on the soundtracks for the old "Preacherman" cult classics. He received no credit, got no money and died piss pot poor. Harry gave me my first guitar lesson. G C & D.. "Now go listen, practice and learn, you'll get it or you won't".
Hi Bill, I really want to thank you for your excellent course material. I try learning banjo since may this year. I suddenly got addicted to the banjo. I also used the Janet David book which is a good start to me. But now I am a little further I am using more of your vids and tabs . So now I also go start using you accompany mid files which are great having them at different speeds as well. Very handy now I am trying to learn dueling Banjo's. and also here your version is the best to learn from. You just are the most complete web teacher, and very relaxed as a person it seems. I agree with other comments, you are the best (for me right now anyway). So thank you, muchas gracias, merci, danke schon, spasiba, khop khun kap.So the news struck me that you been in the courthouse (with a clark family). I hope nothing bad happens and you will get out safely. If not give me a call and I send you a cake with a file.
I waited for years for an explained guide to this classic....I love this...thanks bill your version branches out more in the bluegrass style....!paul from Scotland..
Dang! This is the perfect song to learn when getting the hang of licks. I just "completed" your Foggy Mountain Breakdown tutorial and am ready to find a new project. I love playing Foggy mountain, now! I was thinking about trying to tackle Rocky Top, but would love to have a "bag of tricks".
Started plaything the banjo today (first instrument i've ever tried to learn). Obviously started here like a fool. i've surprised myself with what i'm playing actually sounds like what its meant too. which has give me a smug face all day. Thanks alot for the detailed video and tabs.
Thanks Bill, I love this! Picked it as my first learning banjo tune and it is quite "do-able", except for the G-lick at 17:40 which I cannot stretch my fingers around. Must master that, since it is in Foggy Mountain Breakdown, which is high on my list.
This vid is awesome. I have no exprience w any instrument and just got a banjo at a yardsale. Im already playn up to the fast part! Unbelievable!! I love this so much, thank u thank u thank u!
Way cool. Thank you master. I’ve been waiting to start this one, but now that I’ve learned Cripple Creek and I’ve started The Ballad of Jed and Foggy Mountain Breakdown, it’s starting to come together. I need to book a private lesson soon. Thanks again for a beautifully organized and presented lesson.
absolutely love this tutorial. Very easy to follow and have learnt quite a lot of it so far. Just a bit of practice now !!! Is there any chance that you have just an mp3 with the guitar playing so that I can play along with the banjo. Had a look on your website but didn't see it. Thanks
Thanks again William another great video have been working on Foggy Mountain breakdown and will now try this , your videos are a great help thanks again Mark
I'm stuck at 6:05. I have small hands and can't seem to stretch too easily to the 7th fret. I will keep trying! Super newbie here. Great lesson! I just wish I had slightly longer fingers!
Dear Bill Nesbitt, this is just to say Thank you for all your videos and tabs. It‘s just amazing and so much fun! I learnt many of the cool tunes from you, the ones every amateur banjo picker dreams of being able to play: Dueling banjos, Foggy MBD, Pike County BD, Lonesome Road Blues, and many more. How can I show my appreciation? Best regards from Switzerland, Jochen
Just found your video, I just got myself a 5 string and this is great, tried your web page but it keeps freezing, but at least I get your video, cheers

Great version. Doesn't show off. Slow enough to pick up quickly. Don't need TABs. Perfect!
You make this so easy to understand with your split screen!
