Dueling Banjos: How I play it on 5-string Bluegrass Banjo

  • No banjo tune is "set in stone." Every banjo tune (or tune on any other instrument) can be improvised upon. But you need your own "bag of tricks" to draw from to make that happen. Here I found the opportunity to pass along some of my favorite banjo licks to you, within the framework of "Dueling Banjos", put together in a way that (hopefully) makes musical sense, set to a simple chord pattern. In my version I start off slow (like the movie version), with guitar and banjo swapping licks, then gradually build up speed into the "fast part," then go back to the swapping part, then into another fast part, then finish with an ending similar to the movie ending.
I feel like I do this in the same spirit as the original 1954 version from Arthur "Guitar Boogie" Smith and Don Reno. They used it as an opportunity to show off their hot licks on the 5-string and plectrum banjos (so it really was "Feuding Banjos"). I don't really know many hot licks, but I hope you'll find this a useful tool for building your improvisational bag of tricks.
Tab and play-along tracks at faster speeds are available at my site, littlerockbanjo.com.
I have posted this video for instructional (teaching) purposes only and, in my opinion, it constitutes fair use:
"The fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies or phonorecords or by any other means specified by that section, for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching (including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarship, or research, is not an infringement of copyright."
    Hope you enjoy.

You've no idea how you've helped me to develop my playing. These are truly excellent tutorials - I live in England where there are relatively few banjo players so I've never had a proper teacher. Thank you so much!

Hey Willie, your 110% right anything is fair game when playing the banjo as long as it makes sense. Your version of dueling banjo is by far the best I've heard especially for a beginner. I know everyone should have there own opinion but the 105 dislikes are just plain ignorant. You deserve so much better than that for tring to teach someone how to play a tune like Dueling Banjos. I'm a beginning Banjo player myself, just been at it for 3 weeks and already can play that tune. Not well, but can play it. At 67 and never playing a string instrument before I'm not doing to bad. Please keep putting out your version of any song you like. I promise I'll watch and listen and learn.
    Thanks again Phil

this is the first time i've ever read tabs. always dismissed them before as some crazy foreign language and had to learn by memorization. i'm at a decent enough baseline now and it just made sense to me. could read along as i played. thank you man, it's feels like a crazy breakthrough.

hey, bill. I've had a banjo for only about 3 days (since Christmas morning), but I've been interested in learning the instrument for a little over half a year. dueling banjos always seemed really hard to me, even the beginning part. I'm 21 and my dad has been pushing me to learn guitar since I can remember, but it never really stuck. as I'm typing this I just got comfortable with the first little lick and am about to move on to the second one, but just being able to play that blows my mind. as someone who has never been able to play an instrument being able to play anything other than the simple E string smoke on the water really blows my mind. I've been browsing lessons on youtube for a couple of days but you're the first one that stuck and actually helped me play something that sounds good and I can be proud of. It really helps take away the fear of "I'm never going to figure this out it's too hard" so thank you so much for helping me get past that. i cant wait for my journey with this amazing instrument and ill be checking out your channel after I practice a bit more.

Hi I am from Macau China. 59 years old. always loved the sound of the Banjo but never learned it. I do play guitar and mandolin. Had a 4 string banjo when I was a kid (my grandfathers) but never figured out how to play it. My kids bought me a 5 string banjo for fathers day this year. So I have been working at learning for about 4 months now. I love your teaching videos. Like others have said, you do the best teaching on the web. I do play guitar semi professionally, and I play a Chinese instrument called the PiPa, but your teaching is some of the best anywhere out there. Thank you.

Hi Bill, I really want to thank you for your excellent course material. I try learning banjo since may this year. I suddenly got addicted to the banjo. I also used the Janet David book which is a good start to me. But now I am a little further I am using more of your vids and tabs . So now I also go start using you accompany mid files which are great having them at different speeds as well. Very handy now I am trying to learn dueling Banjo's. and also here your version is the best to learn from. You just are the most complete web teacher, and very relaxed as a person it seems. I agree with other comments, you are the best (for me right now anyway). So thank you, muchas gracias, merci, danke schon, spasiba, khop khun kap.So the news struck me that you been in the courthouse (with a clark family). I hope nothing bad happens and you will get out safely. If not give me a call and I send you a cake with a file.

Dueling Banjos was created and arranged by Harry S. Turner (Florence SC), my Uncle, back when he was playing with Authur Smith in the early 30s.. Authur Wrote the music down. Harry couldn't read or write, as he was completely illiterate, but was a master musician. Mandolin, Banjo, Guitar, Fiddle, Piano, Trumpet, and 12 Pedal Steel Guitar master. He could play anything. Harry didn't care if anyone played his music. He also wrote and arranged most of the music used on the soundtracks for the old "Preacherman" cult classics. He received no credit, got no money and died piss pot poor. Harry gave me my first guitar lesson. G C & D.. "Now go listen, practice and learn, you'll get it or you won't".
