Angelo’s uses cooper sharp and their homemade bread is great. The cooper gives a unique tang. Woodrow’s is also unique with their cheese blend and cherry pepper mayo. A very good encompassing cheesesteak review of Philly.
I went to Philly last weekend and picked up Woodrows and Angelo's. Woodrows was by far the best cheesesteak ive ever eaten... until i had Angelo's. Goddamn that was a fucking good cheesesteak.
Delassandro's has great rolls. Outside of that I was not super impressed with their cheesesteak. But I loved that they had a cheesesteak+beer combo for $17
@@nancybasile6230 😂😂😂😂😂😂LITERALLY THE WORST CHEESESTEAK I’VE EVER HAD…..I’ve honestly had better steaks in hospitals, high school cafeterias, and even down south…..And I gave them quite a few chances before I came to this conclusion. Everytime they got worse. Ya, the locals grew up on it cause there was nothing else around. Roxbourough might as well not even be in Philly. But wasn’t nobody from other ends of the city going out of their way for a DalASSandro’s steak, except tourists. Nasty ass meat chopped to oblivion sitting on top of the grill all day getting sprayed with water on an Amoroso roll that gets soggy as fuck by the time you get to your car. And my Uncle Leonard and Aunt Marie owned Amoroso, now my cousin Lenny does. Great roll for sandwiches but terrible for steaks. Their onions are way too big, they don’t cook them. It’s like they take the steak and dump it in toilet water before they serve it. I feel bad for anyone that grew up there and was subjected to that slop. Even Chubby’s right across the street is better……
Everything look so good. But I was look for Jim’s steaks down south street. Which is also good. But now I think I’m try some of the places you went to.
I live in Philly and applaud you for your excellent selections. I find Dalassandro’s a bit salty and the meat overly chopped to the point of minced meat paste but to each his own. Other good spots in Roxborough are Chubby’s and Barry’s and you won’t wait 45 minutes. Mama’s in Bala Cynwood. I have never been to Donkeys in Camden but I hear good things. Try Jim’s on South Street when it’s rebuilt from a very unfortunate fire.
you need to go to maxes broad and erie also alot of these places give packets of ketchup and mayo on the side thats not how you serve a cheesesteak but you out of town people do what you want
I work at maxs. PLEASE DONT RECOMEND ANYBODY TO COME HERE!!!! the food is so good, i keep having to deal with the line going all the way the fuck around the corner and damn near into the parking lot. Its crazy. People from canada just came here for a fucking cheesesteak. *THEY CAME FROM CANADA JUST FOR A MAX'S CHEESESTEAK" And they was deep. Not to mention floridians... Or people from jersey
I enjoyed seeing the 4th Street Deli and akk of your cheese steak review. Do you think you could do a comparison of varius Philly/Jersey Hoagies? Gotta get the "real" hoagie with the Gabbagol and the goodagine.
If you're gonna allow Rowhome in this list, you should hit Gaul and Co for their "Wit or Witowski" - a kielbasa cheesesteak. Angelo's is the reigning champ for sure. I prefer JRP over Woodrow's because it is more 'traditional' - matter of preference. Also highly recommend Jim's (now that they reopened) and Max's. And New Jersey has enough Philly transplants to manage their own good food - Donkey's, Boaggio's, several others.
John's and Angelos are neck and neck. It's all about the bread and they both use a quality, crusty sesame seeded roll. Personal experience will vary mostly on how quickly that sandwich is freed from its wrappings before the bread starts to turn soft. In south jersey there is a spot that rivals both Johns and Angelos called Lillo's and is in the same vein, using a high quality sesame roll. Bafflingly, they put the cheesesteak in this box when you order it to go, however, which is just a sauna for the cheesesteak. By the time it gets to its destination the whole thing is mush so you simply can't order Lillos to go.
I’m more of a roast pork guy. Angelo’s and John’s would be an easy one two, though Angelo’s pushes Cooper Sharp, I gotta have sharp provolone. I tried Ishkabibble’s, in October, I liked the atmosphere of the original place, but the cheesesteak was bland, no sharp provolone. Woodrow’s I’m aware of, but it’s been off my radar, need to try it.
Why does everyone use a seeded roll now? I’m certain Dallasandros didn’t use a seeded roll years ago. I always thought seeded rolls were for hoagies and unseeded for steaks.
I can't believe you went all the way down to John's Roast Pork (in south philly, not exactly the middle of nowhere LOL) and didn't hit Gooey Looeys. It's right around the corner! As for the fru fru "steaks"....... ick. Just no.
I actually cook my cheese steaks in the oven I developed a secret technique all I need to do is find the best role I can possibly find I use Cooper sharp and mozzarella
One of the things that your captured nd hinted at: There really is no BEST Philly cheese steak. We have a ton of neighborhood places that do a variation that many people prize as the best, but there is nothing consistent, especially with the food boom that has been happening in this area for 40 years. One of the places featured, Dalasandro's was "my" cheese steak place growing up and well into adulthood. I hate to say it, but in my eyes, you have never had the real deal Dalesandro's that I knew for nearly 20. They changed things ... the way they were made, the meat to cheese ratio .... that place was a place we all went after a night out with friends or, before a movie and the steaks had a taste that the last few times I had them, just wasn't there any more. Not worth that long wait before they even exploded in popularity. One more thing. pretty much if you order whiz on a steak in Philly, we know you are a transplant or a tourist. American (Cooper sharp is the standard) is what most of us mean locally. There are some that do provolone, but when I was a kid it was a special request.
Angelo’s is king. John’s top 5. The rest not even close with dalASSandro’s being the worst steak in the city, maybe worst ever. That’s where we send tourists. They chop their meat to death and leave it in a huge pile on the grill all day and spray it with water. My family owns the company that makes the rolls dalASSandro’s used and I can tell you it’s one of the worst rolls for a cheesesteak. It doesn’t hold grease well and is made for hoagies and deli sandwiches. That’s why their steaks are always soggy and disgusting. Next time try Stoli’s, Joe’s, and Curly’s……
Who are you talking to/looking at when eating? You rarely look into the camera and are always looking off center to the left when talking. It's distracting
Cooper Sharp American cheese is the best cheese for cheesesteaks. Give it a try! It’s originally from Philly and is creamy when melted in a cheesesteak. That’s what John’s roast pork uses.
I was waiting to see if you went to Angelo’s and you did not disappoint! 🧀🥩🥖🙏🏼🙌🏼
🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Even though the idiot put it as angel pizza on the play bar. Cowboys suck.
Bread makes such a difference. This is why i chose Tony and Nick's (original Tony Lukes), but i NEED to go try Angelo's!
You clearly have no cheesesteak taste. They suck just like the cowboys.

@TheSleeds had johns roast pork, I liked it a tiny bit less, it's my 2nd favorite. I thought their roast pork was better than dinics.
I was waiting for Dalessandro's. All of my Philly friends love it

No they don’t. It’s a tourist trap. One of the worst steaks I ever had in my life.
Gino’s and Pat’s are the tourist traps…Dalessandro’s is a neighborhood staple that locals grew up on. The BEST !!!

I'm from Philadelphia and my spots are John's roast pork cheesesteaks. Dallasandros. Carmen's. Max's. Woodrows. Cleavers. Larry's.

Tony & Nick’s (formerly Tony Luke’s) has really good cheesesteaks. Same with Philip’s on Passyunk.

Delassandro's doesn't use seeded. Seeded roll & cooper sharp cheese on cheesesteaks has been trending for couple years now.
Flavor of seed all involved.
No one ever mentions Del Rossi's Cheesesteak Co, N 4th Street and Spring Garden. The Best!
Mouth watering
Thanks a lot
Dont sleep on Larrys 54th st, cityline avenue on st. joes campus🔥🔥 which was kobe longtime go 2 spot!!
Tony Luke's is the best, and if you want another sandwich to rival, go to the reading station at dinics. Ask for the roast pork with broccoli rob.
Love original Ishkabbibs as I call it the nest
You should’ve went to Curlys right outside of Philadelphia in Levittown. It trumps all of those places
Smart man I agree. Wish they had unseeded rooms only complaint but it's great

John's and Angelo's are my top 2 but you need to try Jim's when they open back up in a couple months. Best late night wiz cheesesteak in the city.
