- October 28, 2011 - The White Salmon River in Washington state is flowing again as the nearly 100-year-old Condit Dam was disabled with explosives Wednesday. The reservoir draining took about 2 hours. Further demolition is scheduled in 2012. The event is a significant milestone for river restoration and dam removal nationwide.

@@abejunkies nice one

Thank you! No annoying music, no narration. Just a good video of exactly whats on the tin! 👍
Blame modern editors and designers for why every youtube video feels like a 'checklist' these days.
I'm glad the 'old' stuff still exists to show us what quality is like.
What's a tin?
I love it either way

Bet there were a ton of fish going "WTF???!?!?!?"
pulverized
Fish that used to live in that river probably died because of the dam either drying up the latter part of the river or the river not flowing anymore for the upper part

That's EXACTLY what I said. Lol
Pepijn Borremans so you think the lake was dead of all fish? 🤣🤣
mullaperiyar should do this
Very difficult

I would like to see what the river looks like today, five years later.
+Sterling Crawford wow, great know, beautiful place, thanks for the links
We rafted it with Wet Planet. Whole day trip on the White Salmon. Great day and the best rafting company I have rafted with.
Ty!.
@@sterlingsylvir I would have thought trees and other plants would have been placed along the river banks to cover all that exposed soil. At the very least, some grass seed.
@robert coates NG just released a video, look it up!
Wow, that was intense. As always, National Geographic never fails to impress with 🌎 class documentaries. Thank you.
Realmente a força da natureza é fantástica!!!
could be fun to see the same place 10 years later :)
Was kinda hoping the whole dam was gonna go, great video non the less
thats why it's "removal" and not just removal
bruh wot
MrcabooseVG i think they wanted to clean up the mud
There is another video out there where you can see the removal itself
Me too.
I would love to see a time lapse of the habitat recovery on the old reservoir bed. I imagine that it will take a while for the forest to get down to the river bank.
That is very silty, probably any trees that tried to grow there would not get very tall.

considering the flood crisis dam water level will rise to 142 feet
You need to petition your government, not random people on RUclips.
@@jshepard152 central government is considering all the dams that has to be demolished
The case against the Kerala government will not go because so many cases are against them and it is put off and the case does not appear in court
We rafted down the White Salmon River past this dam site in July 2014. There is virtually no sign the dam was ever there and could have easily missed it if not for the guides pointing out a few small remnants downstream.
I Imagine there isn't much now
About 50 million insects died during this event.
RIP
And fish and water mammals and probably water side birds etc etc
David Secondname Not to mention about 100yrs worth of accumulated deoxygenated sludge that went downstream to pollute & settle in otherwise clean aquatic habitat. All washed down with a slug of very, very cold water. Such is the engineers solution for a quick cheap outcome. Slow is better but requires care & forethought.
bigglesOz Really? You worry about a little bit of silt... It's natural, It is everywhere, It will get washed away and eventualy in to the ocean to be filtered.
Don't think 50 million could fit in that area dumbass.
I think a lot more than 50 million could fit there.
I can smell the dust and the soil. The smell of the dry ground getting water

Wow that really beautifyed the landscape
Wow, those massive melting mountains of silt are mesmerizing.
wow, no wonder they demolished it, it was filled to the brim of silt.
That silt makes excellent fertilizer for growing crops.
@@Wildstar40 what is silt?
@@lemonboy9yearsago760 Basically any dirt you would find at the bottom of a river. The individual grains are very small, and because it's spent so long underwater, with a bunch of dead creatures piling up and getting ground into it, it's full of nutrients.
@@lemonboy9yearsago760 what are you; an alien human hybrid? Look it up fool.
Now that silt covers everything downstream. What a mess. That wasn't even a dam removal.
"time lapse draining" it should of been called. came here thinking the dam was being demolished.
You didn't see it demolished?
@@another90daystochangethis34 dam is still there isn't t? therefore not demolished.
@Vyrus01AP1 Well its purpose was demolished.
They probably removed the dam some time later, or if not, left it to crumble.
Well it does have "removal" in quotes in the title.
The dam is indeed completely gone. and visiting the site location today you would never know it was here.
Watching it in 2020 makes so much sense
Uau! Incrível!

How did you know?
Like did you recognize the river in the video then check the description, or did you already know of the video before going in?
Just curious.
Beautiful to see this happening! Let's bring them all down!

love the internet, we are all thousands of miles apart scattered across our planet and yet can read each other's thoughts on a music we all can listen to.
Seeing this gigantic activity I think I would like to have been present during the upheaval that went on during the formation of the mountain range. Nature is wonderful and its engineering is fascinating to say the least. Big projects are so breathtaking. Let us hope that the salmon thrive as climbing a dam to find the breeding grounds was not simple. I cannot imagine humans mating after such a climb!
It looks like effects! It’s crazy that this is real!
"dam" that was quick!
Seriously underrated comment lol
I wonder how the river looks like now, 8 years later.
Everything about that is wonderful, explosive’s especially.

I actually like that sound. Find it calming. That's if you mean the water.
For some reason the explosion looked so cgi. Hah.
ikr
It didn't look real at all
Same feels haha
What explosion? AFAIK they just opened the gates. There was no "removal" here, just emptying the dam.

I worked on this removal process for over ten years before the day this was filmed. The river looks truly amazing today. You would honestly never be able to tell where the dam was. And the salmon population has moved back in. From a river restoration perspective the project is a complete success.
It looks absolutely beautiful. Only way you would be able to know where the dam was today would be with a guide or if you had knowledge of its location.
"So, you remembered to warn the communities down stream, right?"
"Huh?"

Great job with this video.
That was in fact pretty spectacular.
