  • Over a year ago, I cut 11 inches off my Thermarest NeoAir XTherm Max reducing the weight of my air mattress by 6 ounces. The mattress now packs up smaller and takes much less room in my panniers. My mattress was originally 25x77 inches filling up my tent floorspace from head to toe. It is nice to now have more room to put things in the tent.
    This video, by Steve Evans, is what I used as a 'how to': • How to Cut and Reseal ...

    I have a queen airbed I haven't used in ages and an SUV that will ALMOST fit a full. I'm going to try this.

      Practice with the iron on the piece that you cut off to make sure the iron is the right temperature. It's easy after that. Good luck!

      Jeff - Wondering if it worked on your air mattress? Those are usually 8-10 inches in height and sometimes have flocking that might get in the way of a seal?

      @@sharonm7039 hopefully Jeff will chime in with his experience. I had to cut away some of the flocking to get a good seal.

      Thanks for watching! Isn't it amazing how easy this is? I've been using the pad I shortened for years with no issues.

    I have the same problem as you, wanted a wide matt but I'm short.
    about to do the same with my xtherm (rounded version) ... any idea if the process would work the same? any issues with your shortened matt since the modification?

      I think this process will work the same for your xtherm mat as well. Take your time. Measure twice, cut once. Be sure to use the piece you cut off to practice and to get the temperature right. I'm still using the pad I modified 2 years later with no problems. Best of luck!!

    Hi, do you think that this would work on an REI Flash Sleeping pad?

    • @TravelsByTrike
      @TravelsByTrike  6 лет назад

      PocketNomad, yes, it is a risk but I do think this technique would work with any air filled sleeping pad.

      Sorry for the late reply. I only just saw this comment. Yes, I think it will work for any sleeping pad. Be sure to use the piece you cut off to get the right temperature before ironing the pad for real. Take your time and it should work.

    Why not just fold or roll the end, and use it like a pillow instead of cutting it.

      You can't roll the end when it is pumped up. Cutting the mattress saved me lots of room in my panniers.
