I've taken a lot of ribbing about my shortcuts, but I'm 67 and have been fixing everything laid in front of me since making slot car frames at about 11-12 years old. I've learned the limits of what can and can't be done,so no,I don't hardly ever spend if I can repair something myself. My hat is off to these guys!
Man, those vintage slot cars were cool. I inherited a large collection of my father's from the late 50s/early 60s. Bunch of different designs. Loved the horizontal "pancake" motors with the 3 poles, the brass gears, the thin spring clip that held them together from the top. Fiddling with those tiny disc brushes. Seemed like each of the motors, chassis, and bodies had their own personalities and you could have all kinds of fun mixing and matching. Those things would fishtail all over the track. I share the same fix everything spend no money ethos; it has served me well. Not as many folks my age (32) with that philosophy, interest, or know-how. But the maker movement in recent years is certainly helping reverse the decline.
I really got alot of respect for these guys, the quality work they can do with the absolute minimum of tools and equipment, doing the most with the least.

Nice work guys. No fancy dial indicators or micrometers but you get it done. The intermediate welds looked a little sketchy but the last pass looks good. Excellent repair work.
Intermediate welds always look sketchy. That is why you use a die grinder to smooth the weld before filling the rest. That is how we weld nuclear reactor pipe.
an oxy- acetaline torch would be nice also. liquid wrench was what we used to call it, would break any bolt loose. lol sorry former junk yard worker here, had access to any parts i wanted.
I'm with you on that. Some of the dirtiest welding ive ever seen. But the proof Is in the pudding. A bunch if those repaired housings on the road out there.
Never expected they could actually align the shaft to tolerances by simple hammering and stick welding. Also they machined and prep the bevel n backing plate for a full pen weld. Absolutely amazing
Yeah it was amazing what they did but Why is what I can't understand. You can't just eyeball machined tolerances! They just needed to put the bent end in the big, 4-jaw chuck, heat it and straighten it. Then heat treat it with the torch, carbon And oil. Invest $20 on a dial indicator. Not just Europe! Problem is, it's more cost effective to buy new then to remanufacture. It is amazing what you can do with simple tools and some know how.
You would have to pay three or four engineers for certifications before a vehicle would ever be allowed on the road. Even then there would have to be declarations to insurance companies and possible loadings. New fitted axle would probably be cheaper in the longterm.
The axle was bent due to overloading, it was repaired through weldind, It wonnt last long, It will snap at the point of welding if it is overloaded again.
I don't see anything wrong with this repair just because its not in a fancy state of the art computerized shop doesn't mean its a bodge job this is old school and a good weld an inch wide can hold a tonne in weight, looking at his welds its got plenty of penetration
I agree - in fact the repair is at least as strong as the rest of the axle tube - probably stronger with the repair piece shouldered inside the tube. These men are true craftsmen, this is how so much was done in the U.S. in the early to middle 1900s, back when a man's skills got it done - long before we had the "it's junk, throw it away, get new one" mentality. The kind of craftsmen that built the industrial revolution here. Thanks for calling it what it is.
There is indeed nothing wrong with this repair all being that the final welds (called "capping") should be done in overlapping beads from the ouside to the center with the last cap in the center. There is a limit to swaying like he does, say 12- 15 mm is max. and officially he is well beyond that limit by the looks of it. And for an even better result they should've prepped the axle side too, that was untouched. I've seen them putting entire axles in a lathe in different movies so that should'nt have been a big deal to them.
Desperation makes people do everything. In a country of around 3-5 dollars for a day's work, the purchase price is very high. instead of purchasing this material, he has to repair it. If you say to put on a new horse, 3-5 years of earnings will be wasted.
Going by the style of the weld capping in the first few seconds of the vid, this wasn't this axle's first visit to this shop ? Bit concerned that he was pushing flux into the weld pool as they rotated the axle towards the welder and didn't change the direction of rotation until the capping pass. I think it will be making a return visit back to the shop again in the future ?
Out of necessity, parts are much more expensive than repairs. Expense aside, I agree with you they are great mechanics and and can fix most of the issues they encounter. Great job thanks for posting.
