  • I explain several aspects of aviation on this IFR (instrument flight rules) flight from Cherokee County Airport, Georgia to Chicago Aurora Airport, Illinois. I departed VFR (visual flight rules) and picked up my IFR flight plan from Atlanta Center. I explain altitude selection based on winds, instrument flight challenges, pilot logbooks, center ATC vs TRACON (terminal approach control) air traffic control, how I set up for transitioning to night flight, and approach selection.

    • @310Pilot

@William, if you are referencing the squarish area that has a bunch of things that look like buttons and switches on the top row, that is the circuit breaker panel. They all pop out if the circuit trips and the switches at the top control the exterior lighting, de-ice controls and a couple other minor things.

I always enjoy conversations about IFR flight. About 20 years ago I put in about 25 hours of instrument training, including IMC, and I have boot marks on my butt because I didn't finish (life, ex-wife, kids, etc). The plan is to get back to it but the aircraft and instructor are both hard to come by where I fly.

Plus I never get tired of glancing Port & starboard glimpsing prop spinners & the coolest looking tip tanks. At night the red hot glowing exhaust manifold of the Chieftain was also as comforting as an old log fire.

Really enjoyed this. My grandfather was a pilot from age 17 (WWII instructor) to age 71. He took me with him many times and this reminded me of those trips. He later flew Barons and last had a candy-apple red v-tail Bonanza (hot!) He could do it all in his sleep, but never swayed from the meticulous checks and process. You picking out the clouds that you like reminded me of him too. He would always say "Joel, look at these clouds. No one else will ever see what we are seeing right now." I loved that. Thanks again, beer(s) on me if you're ever in the Portland OR area.

Kevin, Another great video. I have always loved the views of the tip tanks. When I had my 310 that was the best view from the inside. I thought it was funny when you were talking about spatial disorientation (vertigo) and keeping the shiny side up (very important) but with your aircraft which side isn't shiny? LOL. Definitely a very important subject as many accidents have resulted from this. Nicely done. :). Great trip and, even with the throttle friction mentioned, good night landing (they are definitely more difficult than day time). I love how the Tennessee river looks from the air, I’m blessed to call Tennessee home but I’m currently getting my private pilot’s license so I can adventure out in style. Maybe I’ll be in the right place at the right time to see 310 pilot in the sky:)

Way to log that .001 hrs of actual, Kevin. Working getting more actual on my way to the IFR rating, for the reasons you mentioned. Good flight and great video. I didn’t know that Jaime is J.J. at the center. Lastly, I’m still envious of that panel! Hoping to get there some day!

Your comment about flying never gets old..... I've only experienced two things in my life that once I did, I knew each would be a part of my life forever.... one was my first plane ride at 7 years old and the other was the first time I ever kissed a pretty girl. Yep.... something about that! :-)

-- The nerdishness you profess is a simple reflection of the depth of understanding and love for the art of aviation. It's a pleasure to hear you report that you _never_ tire of what you so lovingly do.

Nice round trip 2nd leg. One request: Takeoffs, approaches and landings are often the most interesting parts of the flight so feel free not to speed them up... Viewers can do that if they are bored. Thanks, Kevin! Keep them coming!
